Yeah but he wanted us to draft Zach Wilson. Maybe being a great QB doesn't mean you're good at judging rookies. I do agree that Lance needs time to play but I don't think the 49ers can afford to let him learn on the job. Which makes you wonder why they drafted a green guy like Trey if they didn't have time to let him learn on the job? Then they add an experienced journeyman for him to compete for the #2 job. As a Niners fan since 81, I was spoiled early and often by Joe Cool and then Steve Young. Two different styles but the same results. It's been a hard 25 or so years since the late 90s!

Geno Smith is a perfect example of what Steve is talking about. Geno Smith figured it out and we all hope Trey can do the same wither as a niner or somewhere else. Good Luck to you Trey!
Actually, the jury is still out on Smith. The narrative was strong with that one last season, but a huge part of that was built on the shoulders of only three or four games. The rest of the time he was basically the Geno Smith we'd always known.
NOBODY dealt with more pressure or was put in a tougher spot than Steve Young, the man picked to succeed GOAT Joe and keep the dynasty going. I really wish Trey would lean on Steve a little bit to gain some perspective on his situation. Steve is so smart and no one is gonna understand what Trey’s dealing with better than Steve.
The age/generation gap is too great at this point. Players can look for mentoring from someone maybe 10-15 years older, or at least still active in the league. The game has changed significantly since Young last played. It would be the same for Joe Montana. Lance working with Mahomes this off season was good, but unfortunately Pat doesn't play for the Niners.

This is damn near exactly what I told my dad at the game on Sunday. I’m a perfectionist with anxiety and my first thought at halftime was that he seemed nervous. He clearly wasn’t comfortable until the second quarter, and I can relate in that, it takes me a while to get the nerves to go away when I have to perform in any way. I can’t imagine how much pressure he’s facing with people immediately ready to say he sucks or even personally attack him the second he has a bad quarter in a preseason game
Lance reminds me of our local college QB at Boise State, Taylen Green. Early in the game, Green looks not to great, and appears to be thinking about what the coach said, going through the play in his head, or whatever. He is THINKING about what to do (Green is only going to be a sophomore so he is very young still). As the game goes on, he just starts playing football and not thinking about it so much, and THEN he starts throwing great. Kyle SAYS that he wants Trey to go out there and sling the ball, but we all know Kyle and what Kyle wants is for his QB's to follow his directions EXACTLY. Trey plays better when he stops thinking about all of the directions and just starts playing football. What Shanahan says he wants and what he actually demands are two different things. Lance needs to go to a team where the HC knows how to groom QB's and also has an interest in doing so. Kyle Shanahan isn't that guy.
As did Peyton Manning. But no one ever doubted that they belonged in the league. It was known from the start that Lance was going to be a huge project, and even then he might never work out.
Steve is so qualified to talk on this subject because he definitely lived it back in the day. Lance’s TD throw in the preseason Raiders game was spectacular. Not even Mahomes could ricochet a football from player to player before finally being caught by the TE for a TD.
The one thing he needs is what he can't get in SF: the freedom to not be perfect. Purdy and Darnold are ready now, he has no room to learn to relax. He has the tools, when he lands somewhere he knows his constant improvement will give him the chance to take a breath he will blossom.
Spot on from the Hall of Famer. The organization has really bungled up Trey’s development. He has all the tools. It’s frustrating to see. I believe in the kid and wish him the best. I know if we trade him he will flourish elsewhere. Keep your head up Trey!
You really want to keep throwing good money after bad? We already have a keeper in Brock. Just build up Trey's value this preseason so we can get something back in trades. The team is in position to win now and has no business risking games to develop talent. If he's not ready, just cut bait and move on.
@@MrPhilbautistai agree, I don't necessarily think his development has been bungled, its just that his injury meant that it gave Purdy a shot, and he took full advantage of it. I think Trey is just feeling the pressure of being the no.3 pick and living up to that, with Brock Mr Irrelevant doing way more than that.
@@BulldogSportsCards508 I don't think Purdy is gonna be the same player... dude has how may pick-6's so far in training camp? I lost count. He's gonna throw more INT's than TD's this season. Trey will get his shot.

At some point it's going to click for Trey.. and when it doe's. I hope he's still in a Niner uniform...Nobody knows better what Trey Lance is struggling with ..than Steve Young
A lot of players in all leagues struggle with what Steve Young is describing. It's normal, some people overcome it and play, and some don't and get cut.
That “emotional “ block created by expectations of perfection… the “every throw being a memorandum”…. That has existed on this franchise for decades. It was their with Montana , Young, Jeff García, Alex Smith , Kaep, and then the whole thing with Jimmy.
Makes so much sense. Purdy plays free and can throw 10 picks in practice because he has Kyle’s support. Trey walking on eggshells thus can’t let it rip in practice or in pre-season games. Hope he gets a fair shot.
Spoken from a true QB who has gone through the wringer himself. Remember, Steve played difficult, underachieving years at Tampa until someone (Bill Walsh) saw something in him.& gave him a chance. So he is speaking with experience and empathy. The kid needs a chance. Unfortunately, The Niners situation is not ideal for Trey right now.
Bro, he hasn't played much to begin with. Hes still learning what open is, what he can get away with, etc. He processes well, Steve is right, he needs a little room to relax and be able to play free so he can learn. I thought everyone understood he needs to develop.
The same way Zach Wilson is sitting and learning Trey needs the same time until his number is called. With the 49ers track record for injured quarterbacks everybody needs to chill.
Thank You, Thank You Steve!!! We need to focus on our entire team and our Superbowl Run. Trey should not be the spotlight, he will be fine. We have 3 excellent quarterbacks on our team. Maybe we should focus on improving our offensive line, so all our quarterbacks can thrive. If we did that last year, we might have been holding the Lombardi Trophy.😎
Steve Young once again is spot on. His objective is to feel the offense, not think it step by step. Having everyone second guessing every play is counterproductive. It makes him second guess, and double clutch. Al Davis picked up a bewildered Jim Plunkett and let him slowly settle in. Steve himself was positive enough to get better sitting behind Montana. There’s still a good chance Lance will reach his ceiling. It’s just not likely on the 49ers Super Bowl schedule.
He needs to be in Seattle! Coach Carroll's style would be perfect for him! Coach's interview with Richard Sherman the other day was very enlightening in this respect.
Steve Young sounds spot on about Trey Lance. All the fans and media bashing on Trey are just exacerbating the problem. I can't imagine any fan wants to make things worse for the team. I doubt most media wants to make it harder for a team but they need those clicks. I don't understand why Trey is so polarizing for some people. He just needs to play more before we have a real idea of what he can and can't do. Fortunately, 49ers carry 3 QBs on the roster and with the new rules about having 3 QBs dressing for games Trey should be out there every week helping Brock.
Over intellectualizing the position is something Steve knows very well. He came through it, won his SB. I hope the same for Trey no matter where that ends up being, which I hope is here if it all works out.
I'm glad there's people out there that still believe in Lance. I'm one of them. Lance never had a shot. They should let him play the way he wants. Plus our offensive line sucks major.
If he has not done so, Steve Young should give Lance a call to offer him some words of encouragement. I am sure it will go a long way with Lance especially with all the negative press on him after the loss to the Raiders.
Steve is right. Trey needs to play in all the preseason games to refine his skills. They need to let him know it's ok to make mistakes refining his skillset in preseason games because that and to look at rookies is what they are used for. And tell him to just go out and have some fun.
Someone said that Lance was doomed when the niners sold the farm to pick him at 3 bc the niners put him in a pressure situation right away, considering he didn't have much playing experience. I remember hearing this comment when the niners lost to Chicago but forget who said it. Trey was put in a very difficult spot from the moment they drafted him.
"He needs to prove the improvable." Great quote from Steve Young. The problem with Trey is that it was always known that he's a development project, but his injuries prevented and delayed that development for essentially 2 years. And now the 49ers simply don't have development time to afford him. They are a mature team that has to make their SB run NOW. And so they have to give the majority of 1st team snaps to Brock and mere scraps to those in the QB2 hunt. It was Trey's injuries that derailed his development window. It's ironic that the reason they went out to get him was their primary concern with JimmyG being injury-prone. And then they end up with someone even more injury-prone, with regard to games played per injury. That said, Trey is not a bust. For him to be a bust he would need to fail after a legitimate chance at development, which he just hasn't had due to his injuries. He still MAY develop into a great QB, but he'll have to do that more and more on his own time. The 49ers are in win-now mode and simply can no longer afford to give him the focus that will accelerate his development. But Trey is young enough that he still could make it after his continuing development. I think the overnight-sensation of Trey ain't happening, but the future sensation of Trey might still happen.
Brock' s annual salary is $800k with 4 yr contract. He saved the team by leading to the nfc final and got seriously injured. I think, Trey (whose salary is $17m) should be the qb1 from now on. He is paid big. He must play big and lead the team (yes, with many more reps he need)..
I totally agree with Steve Young and I’ll be consistent with what I’ve said since beginning of training camp. Trey Lance would need to really shine and obliterate the competition during preseason in order to be considered for the starting job. Steve Young is absolutely right, Trey Lance has to be damn near perfect because of what Brock Purdy accomplished while he was the starter last season. It’s really unfortunate for Trey Lance that he sat out a year in college because of Covid, sat out a year behind Jimmy his rookie season then obtained a season ending injury the following season. Regardless of how much “bad luck” Trey Lance has ben threw, the fact of the matter is he lost his job due to unavailability, then watched his backup outshine him. Its cruel, but fair. I agree with Steve Young also on the point that because of that series of unfortunate circumstances, Trey Lance’s confidence may be shot a bit. Trey Lance must really get it together on Saturday.

Lance’s TD throw in the preseason Raiders game was spectacular. Not even Mahomes could ricochet a football from player to player before finally being caught by the TE for a TD.
better analysis than this sugar coated summary for the base.
Would be dumb to trade him cuz he has more upside than Brock.
Brock Purdy is not our answer. He hit his ceiling last year I promise.
@@BulldogSportsCards508 I don't think Purdy is gonna be the same player... dude has how may pick-6's so far in training camp? I lost count. He's gonna throw more INT's than TD's this season. Trey will get his shot.
Bars! Facts! Love the fact that a guy who ACTUALLY PLAYED QB in the NFL gives out a great assessment, REPS REPS REPS
Steve Young told trey Lance that he could call on him anytime, and I wish he would’ve done that.
Steve Young was ahead of his time, Every team today is looking for Steve Young. If he had played today he would be the Face of the NFL. I'm not a Niner fan either
Steve give excellent analysis of Trey's situation.
The voice of reason
Makes so much sense. Purdy plays free and can throw 10 picks in practice because he has Kyle’s support. Trey walking on eggshells thus can’t let it rip in practice or in pre-season games. Hope he gets a fair shot.
He got his fair shot and he just isn’t that good.
Thank you Steve for the Truth everything he does is under the microscope it's not fair to that young man
I Love Steve Young my Favorite Qb much respect!!!
i feel like the play calling and the players in that offense didnt help him..not many guys got open and the o-line was atrocious.
Great assessment! The nfl has never seemed like a sport that develops talent, you get a small window to perform or your out.
Wisdom from a man who has been there and done it.
Is this Tom Tolbert on the interview with Steve? He deserves an award for working with Ralph. I miss KNBR and the talent they had.
THIS IS WHY STEVE YOUNG IS THE BEST 49ERS OF ALL TIME!!
Steve is a very smart man and understands human behavior and the underlying layers. Kudos Steve!
He needs to be in Seattle! Coach Carroll's style would be perfect for him! Coach's interview with Richard Sherman the other day was very enlightening in this respect.
Thank you Steve for breaking it down for those that purposely or unaware on how over complicated they paint narratives
It's almost time!!! ✅💯💪🏾
This the first person i respect talking about the same job
Over intellectualizing the position is something Steve knows very well. He came through it, won his SB. I hope the same for Trey no matter where that ends up being, which I hope is here if it all works out.
I'm glad there's people out there that still believe in Lance. I'm one of them. Lance never had a shot. They should let him play the way he wants. Plus our offensive line sucks major.
Wow. That's some amazing analysis right there. Definitely food for thought for the Niners.
How could anyone fire Steve Young? I could listen to him all day.
Steve is on the money. Trey really needs a shot with a different team.
So true.. Steve has been there. Montana did everything right . Where Steve had to press on every play. He should be Trey's QB coach.
"You gonna go in for Joe Montana, the ball BETTER move!" 😂
Someone said that Lance was doomed when the niners sold the farm to pick him at 3 bc the niners put him in a pressure situation right away, considering he didn't have much playing experience. I remember hearing this comment when the niners lost to Chicago but forget who said it. Trey was put in a very difficult spot from the moment they drafted him.
Love and respect Steve
Love this assessment
That’s my qbs! Go trey shoutout the legend Steve young
Love that from Steve Young he had to sit behind Joe Montana I would love to see Trey to get 5 games with the #1s
Thank you Steve young!!!
Love what steve and kurt have said about trey this week. Give trey reps, let him cook
Love how Steve put these fools in their place
So, the opinion of former mvp turned out to be a psychoanalysis instead of a football analysis, great job, Young.
Brock' s annual salary is $800k with 4 yr contract. He saved the team by leading to the nfc final and got seriously injured. I think, Trey (whose salary is $17m) should be the qb1 from now on. He is paid big. He must play big and lead the team (yes, with many more reps he need)..
My biggest issue w this is competition seems to solve these issues. And in this instance, Trey is just being outplayed.
Steve Young knows, Trey needs confidence and the 49ers can't give it to him. If he gets with the right team he can develop.
Steve Young is ABSOLUTELY correct
Joe didn't have to try to be perfect. He was just cool and calm and did it.
Yes and welcome to the NFL. Waaaas too much pressure
Excellent analysis
I can't take it no more 💔 this QB situation is tearing me apart....I want a star QB!
He has to learn to play relaxed and let it fly and trust his instincts.
Young is such a stud #goat#8
If he’s letting all that noise into his head maybe he isn’t cut out for the NFL. Mental toughness is vital.
So Steve wasn't NFL material? He LITERALLY is explaining what happened to him!
