You said it, Purdy's quick and accurate processing of what he sees makes him so special. For me, that's one of the things that makes him so fun to watch. His success isn't simply coming from having the world's strongest arm, or the world's quickest feet, or some other measurable (I certainly don't mean he's lacking in those areas, I just mean those things alone aren't what makes him special). Above all else, Purdy is winning with his mind - with his ability to quickly recognize defensive schemes, understand how his receivers' routes will interact with those defenses, and anticipate where the open windows will be. Purdy is a thinking man's QB - we've seen this since he first came off the bench last year, and heard murmurs about it even before then. That's what makes him such a great fit for Shanahan's offense, but also makes him a good QB independent of the system he's in.
Thanks for the double video this week, JD. :)

I really love how everyone has multiple roles and how they execute them well. Aiyuk is the receiver that Purdy will throw a large gain to with also his exceptional blocking skills. Deebo is a wide receiver running back and a YAC king ( by the way im glad how they used him this game, his presence presents a threat to Cardinals but we kept him from furthering injure himself). Kittle another great blocker he always convert those 4th downs especially on the out routes. CMC is a hybrid weapon on receiving and rushing. The O line has also developed very well. Lastly, Purdy like you said stays so poised in the pocket with awareness of his surroundings and his field vision and accuracy is amazing. Side note, I know the defense didn't play their best game but I know they'll improve and only get better from here.

Good stuff as always, and as much as I like seeing how well the 49ers did, I am already looking toward Sunday. I have a feeling the Cowboy game will be the George Kittle show. The Boys love to Blitz and they love Cover 1, especially on 3rd down and in the Red Zone (speed and numbers have been their winning formula here). But now that Diggs is out, the 49ers have an advantage. With Posse personnel they can run a Double China route. Think of a 7 cut with the W and Z running underneath outs, and guess what, Kittle is 1 on 1 with the weakest "Strong" Safety in the league. Kearse is 6'4" like Kittle but Kittle has 30 pounds of muscle on Kearse and he also has split speed Kearse just doesn't have. You could also run the old Bears Dino Double Post route. Either way, Aiyuk, Deebo, Jennings and CMC will be getting most of the attention from the rest of the secondary. The Cards blew up the Cowboys cover 1 defense all day long with huge chunk plays using similar personnel and schemes. Add to that the fact that the Boys are penalty prone (sloppy play), playing on grass, and have a tendency to over rely on outside speed to rattle QBs (not happening with Purdy), and you have a recipe for a great day at the races!

Great video (as expected). Amazing to see Purdy going through his reads and making good choices. Accuracy is vital, of course, but you need to know where to be accurate to. Didn't seem to be (as) much of him seeing off the defense with his eyes in this particular video, but his knowledge of how a play is progressing on both sides of the ball is incredible.
(Hope we're going to get a of love for Juszczyk in the next video - other than not quite getting a touchdown I thought he had a great game, and seems to quietly go about his business of being another 'positionless' player in the Shanahan offense)

I love the play breakdown and overall knowledge (I subscribe). What I find interesting and frustrating is the reason most people struggle to understand this most complicated sport in the world (I was a D coordinator for 26 years). Many sets, coverages and patterns are called different things based on the verbiage one comes from, but it's all the same thing, just called something different. You labeled the defender dropping down to the middle as an "inverted safety", I've also heard that called a "Bandit" or "Robber".("Invert" is what he does and "Bandit" is his role, I get it)...But it's the same thing and it's confusing to people. Offensively what you called a "4/1", Iv'e heard called a "Pro Trips rt" or "Bunch rt" (a set or formation, not a play)...it's the same thing. Certain routes described as "Texas", "Miami" or "China" are called something else, either by number or letters depending on the team and offense one comes from, but are the same routes and concepts. The casual fan cannot tell you what the "46 Defense" is or why it worked (for 2 years). This esoteric byproduct contributes to why so many don't understand and see the genius of this game I call "Violent Chess". For the average person, it"s like seeing the same great movie dubbed into several different languages and trying to understand it.
    Something to consider.

    • @jonnydel
      @jonnydel  8 месяцев назад +1

Oh I totally understand. I first came up in a digit system and then when I really got into it went toward the WCO and then have been in Kyle's playbook the last couple years. Most routes I'll refer to our using Shanahan's verbiage out of his playbook unless the route name could be confusing.
For example, he calls a short curl inside an "over" route. Most people think of an over route as a 10 yard route traveling through the middle.
Most of the time, when it comes to formations I try and stick with simpler terms, 4x1 for example, for easier digestion.
When it came to the 48 invert I hadn't seen that one out of C-4 very often and so I reached out to a coach who had worked with Gannon who filled me in on some of ins and outs of it and what Gannon calls it. He said it was actually a "tandem" check they run vs tight splits in C-4 in how they matched those routes.
But I totally get what you're saying. Thanks for chiming in and big thanks for subscribing. That's incredible that you were a DC for 26 years!

I've been a niners fan since I was a little girl because Joe Montana was handsome 🤣 But looks aside it's like Montana and Young had a baby together and out popped Brock Purdy, _and he's handsome_ too! 🤭 I feel like we've just been missing that _great_ quarterback. There's been decent qb's in the past (my heart still flutters for Jimmy, but so do his passes over the middle) but Purdy could be what Montana and Young brought to the team all those years ago... multiple Super Bowls!! *Let's Go Niners!!* 🏈🏆
As always I enjoy your breakdowns! There's way too much information for me to absorb but sometimes things stick and I've been seeing it on the field! It's been fun too, I'll say something about the safety or coverage during a game with my friends and they look at me like 👀 So thanks for helping a girl keep up with the boys 🤗

The deep post to Aiyuk was placed in the perfect spot at the perfect time a GREAT anticipation throw that very few QB's can make. JT O'Sullivan called it such a bad throw and it should have been an easy fair catch INT. Last week JT called the back shoulder TD pass to Deebo way underthrown and thay Purdy was probably aiming at the back corner pylon instead of the goal line pylon where Deebo caught it. Lol Even the analysts who are giving Purdy some credit are still in denial that he is making great plays like this, essentially calling them lucky accidents😂 Even the texas route TD to McCaffrey was basically downplayed as a simple checkdown to let CMC do all the work for the TD lol. If Purdy hadnt hit him in stride after his progressions it wouldn't have scored.

There was a few times where Purdy should’ve hit Kittle like on the outside throw to CMC when Kittle was open in the end zone. And the cross over in the middle because Kittle was open. Purdy does a lot of check downs to cmc. Nothing wrong with that but would like to see him spread the ball around a little more. This is me just being picky since Purdy is balling out and looks very good.

So was Deebo just out there to run routes, stay loose, and be a decoy? I know he was a bit hurt, and maybe they wanted to keep him fresh but no bangs and bruises? 20:35 This play has Deebo TD written all over it, but I think his progressions went Aiyuk and then "oh CMC is there too" which I don't fault because CMC was open and while he didn't get the TD it's hard to fault Purdy in thinking he couldn't get it.

49ers look like the team that's going to win the super bowl, but if some defense figures out how to stop McCaffrey out of the backfield on passing routes then they might be in trouble. After watching this, 85% of the targets, we go to McCaffrey. Purdy is doing a great job but on some of those plays, if he actually faked throwing it to McCaffrey and then actually threw it to kittle they would have got more yards and a touchdown on one of them. I'm sure they'll see this in the film room. Not trying to be negative, just pointing out things because they should win the super bowl but they should be aware of these things also
