Steve Young keeping it real. Brock is only 23(!) and he's already an ELITE processor. THAT'S the most important thing to being a QB in the NFL. Dan makes a great point that Brock had to spend 4 years in college throwing guys open when lots of these guys got to spend college throwing to future all pros. It taught him to throw with anticipation and accuracy because he doesn't have that cannon, that gun like the bigger guys have where they can rip it out even if it's a little late. What Brock has been able to do at such a young age is SPECIAL! This is not normal, I don't care how much talent is around you. At some point, people are gonna have to acknowledge that Brock Purdy is a top tier NFL quarterback

I don't mean to do this comparison, I really dont, but it just fits what you're saying so well, and that is that couldn't you say this about Joe Montana as well... Joe was 6'2", 180 pounds, skinny, very small frame, and yet he was so smart and quick to process that his lack of an elite arm (which I always though was underrated, much like Brock's arm strength), and the elite athletic abilities (although he had excellent escapability and quick feet, again, remind you of anyone.. that's Brock!), all those things are at such a high level already that it allows Brock to be great, just as they did for Joe.
Again, I'm not putting Brock in the HOF already, but just talking about his physical traits, what he has and doesnt have, and how the league and media view him is very reminiscent of how they viewed Montana back in the day. Brock is also forcing these evaluators and analysts to rethink the position yet AGAIN, much like Joe did back in his day

    • @DudeTastic13

Great post. Think back to the Jimmy G days. Jimmy & Brock were both fearless in throwing to the middle of the field where the LBs lurk under, and Safeties lurk over. Jimmy's much bigger, taller, better arm, but think of how many INTs from tips? How many INTs from inaccuracies? With Brock it's different. He's able to look a lot of people off, "manipulate the defense", and gets the ball on time and in stride to the cutting receiver. Therefore, size is not everything. Processing is everything. Anticipation, accuracy is everything. Height, Arm strength, or even scramble-ability are all over rated (which, surprisingly, these aesthetic things make up to a lot of draft criteria).

    • @terrythegnome2408
      @terrythegnome2408 6 месяцев назад +8

I agree except for the fact that Brock has an extremely underrated arm and athleticisim. Brock has the best deep game in football. The highest accuracy in passes over 20 yds. He also has elite short area quickness. His 10 yard burst is just under Lamar Jackson's, the main difference is after ten yards Lamar keepse going faster and Brock stays the same. Brock will never outrun guys downt he field but he can escape the pocket and throw on the move as well as anyone in football.

Almost without exception, Steve would look downfield and then break out of the pocket and run. I used to tell my wife, "Young is going to run on this play." Sure enough. It seemed getting hit calmed him down and then he would display his incredible passing ability. A great player and a legendary SF 49er - Steve Young.

A lot of times you don't really know until you look around and all of a sudden you realize, yes, this is the guy. Great college players don't always translate to great pro players and sometimes, average college players turn out to be great pro players. Let's not forget, the guy who's generally considered the best wide receiver of all time came from a small Mississippi school and was not highly recruited. Of course I'm talking about the great Jerry Rice. Also, to Dan's point about Purdy "throwing receivers open", I would contest that this is a characteristic of a quarterback that understand the route tree of a receiver. He played quite a lot of college ball at Iowa State (a passing team) where he started 46 games so he's got quite a lot of experience at the position in a passing offense. Sometimes we throw the term "great" around a little too much, but one thing is for sure, he's Purdy darn good. Is he a product of a "system", yea maybe, but isn't every teams success a product of a "system"? Just sayin'

Kyle Shanahan just needs to keep his cool and lose the attitude when things go wrong, otherwise, he will just ruin the confidence of his players. John Lynch has been doing an amazing job with all these crazy trades he has been making, so as long as they keep Purdy protected with a strong OL, everything should only get better and better.

He played head to head with Hurts and had the better game head to head. Sometimes just watching them actually play means more than measurements. As an ISU fan I would not have traded him for anybody those years, felt the same about RB Breece Hall. That's a great point but I think it's because they're looking for the atypical prototype, as Young said, for quarterback. Gone are the daya where you have a poised pocket passer that's accurate at the short-mid range. Instead, the template is now having a QB that has that canon for an arm and who is a part-time running back.

Few -- if any -- ever called him an elite quarterback. Some offered the possibility that he might develop into one, but tempered that with the reminder that he wasn't there yet. What's important is that he's played better (and is more reliable) as a starter than Jimmy G or anyone else during the Shanahan Era.

Seems to be a "national narrative" when attacking Brock's level of play to leave these stat off the table? FYI he leads the league in all three!

I always said pros and college are different. Elite qbs in college hardly become elite in the nfl. The pressure is so much greater and diva receivers and fans put so much pressure on qbs to make the perfect pass. This is why arm strength hardly ever translates to nfl star qbs. It’s all about processing power and the ability to block out the pressure and confidence to let the ball fly. Mahomes has it, and I have to say purdy seems like he does too. The niners have always been my nfc team so I’m glad they found their qb.

    • @stephenmartin6430

I believe most elite college qb's could at the very least be effective pros. We call these young men "busts" when they don't make it. I would contend that there are few organizations in the NFL that can develop qb talent. Most of these promising young qbs end up playing for this perennial "bust" organizations. Take the Patriots for example, switch Mac Jones and Brock Purdy. Mac would be flourishing under the Shanahan system and it would be said of Brock "well we only spent a seventh on him. Football is the ultimate team sport and the qb is reliant on so many things outside of his control. A bad football team will have a bad quarterback. A great qb can elevate an average team to good, but a bad football team/organization is just bad and the qb can't do much about this.

I played in a golf tournament with John Brodie once and he mentioned there were times when he saw a play happen as he walked up to the line of scrimmage….not imagining it, actually seeing it. He also said he had talked to other QBs about it. Although they agreed they knew what he was talking about they hadn’t want to broadcast it, because it might sound too bizarre. I’ve heard fighter pilots refer to knowing the next move without thinking. Time/space as a continuum, is an open question in quantum physics. Could it be that it can be condensed in a small coterie of elite athletes. Sounds like Steve Young has peaked over the fence.

Like Young says, there’s some people that just get a complete calm clearheadedness in scenarios where other people’s adrenaline would be off the charts. Yes, practice and reps help this immensely, but even then, there’s just those in that other group that have it from the start.

To mention the losses Brock pretty head this season without mentioning the concussion is a bit Reckless I think. I know it sounds like an excuse but if you have a concussion you shouldn't be cleared in one week. I'm also a professional athlete and in my profession if I get a concussion in a fight I cannot step foot in the gym four 30 to 60 days or I can lose my fight license and be fined. To clear someone for a concussion in one week is absolutely ridiculous and has to do with millions of dollars on the line. The concussion he suffered is obviously the main reason why he made some mistakes.. God bless you bro hope you're doing well steve.

Reasons to me, that he was drafted last, or like an elite talent of Brady, going so late, is you cant teach or scout, access and accuracy. We didnt know of Bradys abilities till he had the chance. Same as Purdy. That A&A sets the best from the rest. Man, watch out, cuz for Purdy to show he has those assets already, hes going to be a beast. Arm strength can be trained. And he'll be even better once he gets stronger. But that A&A.....you have it (and know how to use it), or you dont and you get by on arm strength and reciever abilities, and become less than the best.

To do be in that position with this team would be a fundamental failure in this Shanahan system. when this team is right it's unlikely they will be in a position of being down 2 scores late in the 4th were the QB has to make up for the failures in the system of this team. this happened in that 3 game skid. but the team itself was not functioning as shannah team on defence.

Jimmy had literally the quickest release in pro football, and the fastest measured since Tony Romo. You are simply objectively wrong. The 49ers' sack numbers went way down after Jimmy took over in 2017. Jimmy would frequently throw into heavy traffic, and sometimes get burned by it. He almost never threw the ball away. That's the literal opposite of a game manager, and the very definition of a gun slinger. You clueless newbs seem to think that "gun slinger" means throwing deep balls or something. Or that it means racking up a ton of garbage time yards like Vinny Testaverde or Drew Bledsoe because you get behind a lot in games. Alex Smith was a game manager. So was Jeff Garcia in his Eagles and Bucs days. Jimmy was a gun slinger playing in a balanced offense.
