@@bozmundarts2614 I think I heard somewhere they’re trying to enforce mirror less cameras for journalists at White House press events. Or something like that but they have a few years for the deadline.

I'm about to go through my 5th camera in little over 20 years, last 2 being DSLRs. Now I like to move up to a full frame mirrorless camera. The information in this video was fantastic but just saw it now in Jan of 2023. I'm sure things on both DSLRs and mirrorless have changed. If money wasn't a factor I have one or each with a selection of lenses. I reality even my tried and true lenses are pretty much shot. Very well done JP. I saw an immediate advantage when the industry changed from film to digital because now I was in charge of post-production instead of the lab and I could see that I had a correct exposure immediately after releasing the shutter, but so far I see no advantage for me in mirrorless. l still use DSLR's because of the availability of inexpensive lenses available. Especially with Nikon F and Canon EOS. You can find just about any kind of lens at any price point for those.
I shoot Canon and just bought a new mirrorless EOS M50. I also bought a $40 third-party adapter that will let me use all my Canon glass. The nice thing is that it works with both EF and EF-S lenses (I have both). Someday I'll save up my loose change and get a full-frame camera, but for now... this is going to allow me to do everything I want to do as a "pro-sumer" for less than $700. Yeah, that occurred to me too. However, what's going to happen is that a lot of people are going to be selling some great used equipment over the next couple of years, equipment that will let me get my job done just fine, and I'll be picking it up for a song. By the time I've worn out the last of that equipment the mirrorless world should be sorted out to a greater extent and I'll be able to switch then. And then I'll have "vintage" equipment and will be able to sell it to collectors in 2030. No joke, I just picked up a (very lightly) used 5D Mark III yesterday, and it's an amazing camera! Sure it's only 22MP, but even the 1DX Mark II is only 20. If my luck holds out this way I'll be good for a while.
In defense of Jared using the A9 in so many examples: The A9 is quite expensive, but it is clearly where the mirrorless world is going. Wait a year or two and a mid price mirrorless will have those features. I’ll admit that I have an A9. I had in an order for an AIII but kept having delivery schedule delays. It's funny the size issue thing. Before SLR's became DSLR's they were tiny. They only became bigger to fit in the digital technology. Now mirrorless are heading back to the size of SLR's and people say they are to small. I wonder if everyone complained about DSLR's being to big when they first came out.
They can be lighter and occupy less space, but they have to feel consistent and have a certain presence and shape, imo. It's a spiritual thing, a feeling: it can't be an insignificant squared box with plasticky buttons on it.
Eclectic Jon 101 SLRs actually became bigger and more ergonomic in the late 80s. They started having bigger grips and more electronic controls. Size being an advantage is about ergonomics and handling. There's nothing comfortable or enjoyable about holding a small camera with an inadequate grip and a finger floating in the air. The best size is the one that fits your hand and so will vary from one person to the next. I loved it when Canon's EOS cameras came out in the 80s as they felt so much better in the hand than the older flatter bodies with almost no grips on some other brands. My first SLR camera was a Zenit.
This is something that bugs me as well, loved my Nikon FE2, my first serious camera back in 1985, so compact, simple clear dials, tough body with small (albeit heavy) lenses. When digital happened DSLRS became behemoths in size and cost, they weren't for me. Got back into photography big time with the Sony NEX5n and followed by the Sony A7 mk1, a camera that I think is the closest spiritual successor to my old Nikon and on which I still use all my old AIS nikkor glass. Basically small and compact is still where it's at for me.
Eclectic Jon 101 There is a reason for that. Professional dlsrs had far more controls on the body than a film camera. They had to be large. Pros weren’t going to stop and go into the menu to change everything. Those controls are still needed on a mirrorless. The controls all jammed together on a tiny body are a problem for a lot of men. Very small bodies are great for petit women with small hands. That’s why that make different types of cameras. This isn’t one size fits all.
Too big, and too heavy. Thing is, there's only so small you can get before it becomes impractical. You end up holding the lens, rather than the camera.
Great video summary! I don't agree about the shutter covering the sensor when the camera is off though. The shutter is far more fragile and susceptible to damage than the sensor is. Don't forget that the sensor has 3 layers of filters on and often a glass layer too. The sensor is robust, the shutter will explode if a fly farts in it's general direction.
It takes nothing to get a A7III sensor full of tiny dust particles. Doesn't matter how carefully I switch lenses. I never had this trouble with my DSLR canon and I find it a big pain in the ass.
Jared mentions that the shutter protects the sensor from dropping things inside. If you do this to the shutter blades they will almost certainly break. The sensor is scratch resistant and covered in layers of filters and thus is much more robust. I had worse dust on my DSLR. The Sony is super easy to clean. 99% of the time it's perfect with a rocket blower.
Edward Noble The shutter closes to keep out dust, not to protect the sensor from damage. If you go poking things inside your camera you'll damage your sensor regardless. It's a great idea to keep the dust off the sensor while changing lenses.
Edward Noble I think you made that up! I've had SLRs and DSLRs for over 30 yrs. I've never had dust on a sensor (or on my film). I've had dust on my mirror a couple of times and that dust would have been on the sensor had there not been a mirror. Being a charged component the sensor can actually attract dust.
I like how he touched on educating consumers on the small size being just as good or better, i wouldnt have thought many reviewers would think about that
Love it! Right after I invest $5000+ in a DSLR + lenses I find out they are obsolete. I always do this. Bought a PS3 right before the PS4 came out. Bought a Mavic Pro right before the Mavic Pro 2 came out. Bought a Boosted Board right before the new ones came out. I just suck at being a consumer.
'Closing the shutter, while changing the lens' feature in Canon EOS-R -- is Game changing in Mirror less Technology.Hope other camera-manufuctures to follow.
I blow the sensor with a lens blower on my DMC-G7 mirrorless. I have never had a problem with dirt and have never needed to touch the sensor. I have had it 2 years and shot 15k pics. and recorded 100's of hours of UHD 4k. I would think the FF versions would be the same.
New full frame mirrorless need to feel like DSLRs in the hands, for they will need large lenses anyway: it's not like you're gonna casually carry them in your daily handbag. That is my main criticism. Regarding the mechanical sound: I'm sure I can live without it. That's just an iconic sound. I'm sure enthusiasm will fill the void left by it, just like it did with all those sounds you could hear as part of a film camera's experience. I've no experience with EVF, so I can't comment on that.
I have watch a ton of youtube vids to learn the basics of photography before I go out and spend a lot of money on gear. I totally appreciate the efforts Jared and all the other youtube channels put in to their videos because it takes talent, knowledge, and a lot of time. It always amazes me that there are people that would go to the trouble of pressing the thumbs down button no matter if the video was great or not. They are always there pressing that little button and I am sure that they have never produced anything near to the quality of what they just watched. It's like the old adage everyone should be waiter/waitress at one point in their lives, hopefully early on, so they know how to treat them for the job they do. Thank you Jared, you and all the other creators for educating me and saving me thousands of dollars and making me a better photographer more quickly than I could ever do through trial and error. Nice Job!
I was looking for a video to compare specific cameras, but finding this was even better because now I understand what I really need to be looking for. Great video!
While you may have intended to point out the "pros and cons" of each system, I only heard perhaps three "pros" regarding DSLR and everything else was pro-mirrorless. Don't misunderstand, the material was well presented, but not at all objective. Perhaps the video would be better named "The Advantages of Mirrorless Cameras" which would more accurately reflect the content. I was searching RUclips for a more "balanced" evaluation of the two systems.
This is such an informative and well executed video, everything from the animations to the structured way he gives us information is absolute top quality!💯
You explain it very well! Thank you very much for that. Plus you do talk very fast and remind me of myself when talking about something I'm very passionate about
All Cars United so how does Olympus fit in there then? Or Fuji? How someone can forget the makers of the gh1-gh5... Also Panasonic announced the LUMIX S1 so they’ll have FF next year or 2020.
Thank you so much Jared! I have really been playing with the idea of a new camera and thinking of going mirrorless. Your videos save me so much time and headache from trying to research and comprehend all of the options and contrast
02:47 Size has Nothing to do with robustness. it is actually harder for an DSLR to be robust as you Need to make sure that ther alignment of the Mirror - a moving part - does not get disadjuststed for a single bit, because then the AF (and even MF) would completely be unusable.
The G9 from Panasonic is basically everything you're talking about except it's a mft sensor and no shutter protection on its lens when changing lenses. You're biased against Panasonic
I'm not sure if it's because I'm English, and you're American, or what whether it's just a personality thing, but I feel like you're shouting at me in this video, and I'm struggling to watch it! I know you're pretty well known in the photography field, and I'm sure you're a really nice guy but I'm still struggling to watch. What I have been able to watch, however has been very informative.
For me mirrorless is like taking a scenic drive in Hawaii, and watching everything on a computer screen on the dash of the car instead of looking out the windshield. A friend borrowed me his Sony mirrorless for the past week, but at least for now I have decided I like the feel of my DSLR better. The mirrorless feels a little cramped, and I don't care for the EVF.
Pretty crazy, this is the second awesome video that Jared has done that matches an article on my site! I am for sure going to embed this one. You answer it perfectly Jared!
Jared, do you feel with the advancement of technology in regards to mirrorless cameras that the role or definition of a professional photographer is changing?
now that there are 4 ff mirrorless brands coming out, i'm probably gonna wait a generation or two to see whats what brand suits my needs. ill stick to what i have now.
Steven Argyris: EVF will bigly affect the eye, after shooting 10 photo's by looking through the EVF people already started seeing less (by a big margin!). No Joke!
i like to compare the dslr cameras to xbox controllers vs early mirrorless dslr being like a playstation 3 controller lol, at least that was the back then. I'm totally in need of updating and gathering what information I can with new models and revisiting the pros n cons of the two. Thanks Jared
Lofote, many would agree that EVFs are superior in low light. They are much better for long exposures to generate motion blur, such as with a waterfall. My Sonys work fine with a 10-stop ND filter. Every Sony owner should find out what the “Setting Effect” menu item does.
James Brace don’t dismiss DSLRs. Canon and Nikon have some very good cameras and more importantly the lenses. If you are shooting wildlife, it may be more about the lenses. Not just long ones but even a good but inexpensive macro lens will allow you to shoot small things you cannot with an ordinary lens.
Here I am resubscribing for some strange reason ... RUclips whatcha doinggg.. love your videos dude, used to watch these w bunch and finally took the step to go from shooting SD videos (I shoot skateboarding and the Sony vx10000 is very prominent still!) finally taking the step to mirrorless cameras and gotta learn all me stuff again 🙌🏼
oh my god, please someone help me decide.... I just love the grip, the hold and the look of the DSLR but like , the image quality from a mirrorless camera is way better. I am trying to decide between 80D and a A6300. The minor minus in the Sony A6300 is that the lenses are soo stupidly expensive.
Mirrorless camera marketing team : "Hey, lets take the mirror off from DSLR, take out some (or many) feature, then we market it as 'mirrorless camera' as the name of modern version of DSLR, and make DSLR outdated because of its size" Then 4 years later mirrorless camera become bigger, the lens also bigger (usually bigger than DSLR because the need distance between mirror and lens) much more like DSLR, and have feature like DSLR. while still dont have OVF. Good job for their marketing team
You might want to get out more. In no way is ANY mirrorless camera body or lens larger than a DSLR. I've tried them all -- Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji, etc. Every single one is smaller, lighter and more compact -- bar none. In other words, you're spouting nonsense.
McScott76 for the body, if you compare the same sensor size then its gonna be almost the same. I own 5D, fuji xt1 and olympus pen... of course fuji is smaller than 5D and olympus is even smaller than fuji. Thats also the reason why i bought small mirrorless for travelling and still use 5D for work. If you compare the lens size, then its gonna be tricky, because you dont compare the same focal length and aperture but also the bokeh quantity (result). For example you cannot compare canon 70-200 f2.8 with fuji 50-150 f2.8 (almost 70-200 equivalent) even if they have almost the same focal lenght and same aperture, the result if different because different sensor give different bokeh, you should compare with canon 70-200 f4 instead. Also look at sony G-master lens. They are even bigger and bulkier than canon L series. And every sony full frame lens need flank distance between sensor and back of the lens, thats why sony FF lens have their shape like that. You can't defy physics, unless there are breakthrough in lens manufacturing.
@@yedijaluhur, The new Canon EOS RP is a full-frame camera that weighs 17 ounces. The 5D Mark II (which is the closest Canon DSLR equivalent in price/capability) weighs 27 ounces. The RP dimensions are also significantly smaller at 5.22 x 3.35 x 2.76" (48.3 cubic inches) vs. the Canon 5D Mark II, which is 5.67 x 4.35 x 2.94" (72.5 cubic inches). The numbers don't lie. mirrorless is indisputably smaller and lighter than DSLR when you compare apples to apples.
That thing about the shutter protecting the sensor while changing lenses can be fixed by a freaking firmware update, why the heck Sony hasn’t done it yet, are they stupid? What’s the deal?
Angel Luciano oh, I'm sorry! I thought you meant the possibility of having the shutter close down for protection. I'll read stuff better next time! Peace! 😁

Edward, when did this happen ? Plenty of people have 800k shutter counts on their DSLRS.
Learned lots from your video. Very detailed... thank you
Greatly done! Thanks!! Cool sense of humor.. as always!
Thanks, might hold off for a full frame and wait to see what more developments await us.
Wow thank you soo so much for this breakdown!! Fantastic detail 👍 and love the hair too ✌️
I like how he touched on educating consumers on the small size being just as good or better, i wouldnt have thought many reviewers would think about that
Great work on this video, Jared. Very enlightening and entertaining. Good job! Much appreciated!
Your DSLR and lenses are not obsolete.
DSLRs are better, I just got into photography and bought a $200 Canon 550D DSLR.
Like your funny show
Wow ... I do not say this often about your videos - this was a beast of a post. Nicely done.
I still prefer DSLR's over mirrorless cameras. I just love the OVF, the sound of the mechanical shutter and the sturdiness in my hands.
Old fat dinosaur
Jeric Tamayo That's a bit immature. He said he preferred something, so what? He didn't say it was better like a fanboy would.
Same for me I steel prefer DSLR and OVF over EVF
Gabriele Scalise agreed! I love mirrorless but they do need to make them feel like dslrs
Just got Pentax k-x camera from my aunt. Im excited to try that DSLR camera.
Ok I guess I need to take the mirrorless train before I look like a dad with my DSLR.
Still using a Nikon D90 over here 😌
I have watch a ton of youtube vids to learn the basics of photography before I go out and spend a lot of money on gear. Nice Job!
What camera did u use for this video
I was looking for a video to compare specific cameras, but finding this was even better because now I understand what I really need to be looking for. Great video!
GREAT - Exactly what needed - I'm M3/4 ( micro ) moving to next format
What do you think of Nikon d5600?
While you may have intended to point out the "pros and cons" of each system, I only heard perhaps three "pros" regarding DSLR and everything else was pro-mirrorless. Don't misunderstand, the material was well presented, but not at all objective. Perhaps the video would be better named "The Advantages of Mirrorless Cameras" which would more accurately reflect the content. I was searching RUclips for a more "balanced" evaluation of the two systems.
exactly what I thought, all sony users are very biased and it unfortunately shows
Excellent video. Lots of information from Jared. Thank you...
This is such an informative and well executed video, everything from the animations to the structured way he gives us information is absolute top quality!💯
You explain it very well! Thank you very much for that. Plus you do talk very fast and remind me of myself when talking about something I'm very passionate about
2:00 Only forgetting Panasonic...
didn't exist when we filmed this.
Aaaah, I c.. you're only talking Full Frame.
Now my GH5 card is not going to work.
GH5 is not mirrorless?
@@peterferry1646 nope. M4/3 don't count
All Cars United so how does Olympus fit in there then? Or Fuji? How someone can forget the makers of the gh1-gh5...
Also Panasonic announced the LUMIX S1 so they’ll have FF next year or 2020.
Jared is Best guide for cameras
Don't forget the mirrorless cameras doesn't need AF microadjustment.
You're always a big help... another GREAT video!!! Keep doing you!!!
There's one thing I've learned in this video.
BUY A MIRRORLESS CAMERA IN THE FUTURE.😁😂
Thank you so much Jared! I have really been playing with the idea of a new camera and thinking of going mirrorless. Your videos save me so much time and headache from trying to research and comprehend all of the options and contrast
02:47 Size has Nothing to do with robustness. it is actually harder for an DSLR to be robust as you Need to make sure that ther alignment of the Mirror - a moving part - does not get disadjuststed for a single bit, because then the AF (and even MF) would completely be unusable.
size matters i'm told.
The G9 from Panasonic is basically everything you're talking about except it's a mft sensor and no shutter protection on its lens when changing lenses. You're biased against Panasonic
Whats a shutter protection?
Lofote A condom for your shutter. 😜
:-D But seriously, @Jeric, what shutter has protection?
Excellent job! Answered many of my questions!
It's because your volume is too loud.
How precious snowflake
I'm american and trust me, I felt like he was shouting at me too
Aussie Deplorable How’s your rugby team doing these days? 😂
I think you just wanted to talk about yourself.
Thanks Jared ! I've now all the answers I need to know about these cams. You're awesome, thanks and cheers !
For me mirrorless is like taking a scenic drive in Hawaii, and watching everything on a computer screen on the dash of the car instead of looking out the windshield. A friend borrowed me his Sony mirrorless for the past week, but at least for now I have decided I like the feel of my DSLR better. The mirrorless feels a little cramped, and I don't care for the EVF.
mirrorless really appeals to the gadgetheads.
Appreciate all the information and knowledge you dropped on this video Jared. Fro definitely Knows Photo
Thanks man! Great video and it helped me learn something I was trying to figure out. Keep up the great work.
Great Explanation, in particular for beginners, Thank You!
Pretty crazy, this is the second awesome video that Jared has done that matches an article on my site! I am for sure going to embed this one. You answer it perfectly Jared!
Amazing super clear video. Thank you!!
So this is what Redfoo does now. I like the energy
Great review! Thanks for explaining the differences. This was a big help in determining what type of camera I will purchase.
Still trying to understand how there is this much to cameras, and why a Pixel 3 takes such good photos without all the tech as my Canon EOS 80D.
I'm good light its easy to take comparative photos. Push them to the limits and see which really shines.
Man you explained it in the best way. Great. Loved it.
Canon just gotta release the 1dx ii without a mirror and use that extra space for more and newer tech 🤔
Great Video mate, heaps of information. Cheers
Jared, do you feel with the advancement of technology in regards to mirrorless cameras that the role or definition of a professional photographer is changing?
the FrO KnOws pHoToooo.... never gets old 🤣🤣
now that there are 4 ff mirrorless brands coming out, i'm probably gonna wait a generation or two to see whats what brand suits my needs. ill stick to what i have now.
I am sticking with DSLR until scientific proof comes along that the EVF does not damage your eyes in long term use
Steven Argyris Nice bro, what type of tin foil hat are you rockin?
Fuji X-Pro2 has a hybrid EVF/OVF so you can turn the EVF off and shoot OVF full time
Steven Argyris: EVF will bigly affect the eye, after shooting 10 photo's by looking through the EVF people already started seeing less (by a big margin!). No Joke!
how is this different than looking at computer screens for hours and cell phones?
You're amazing! Lot's of work went into this video. Thanks!
Exposing eyes to LED light has recently been linked to Glaucoma, so maybe putting your eye up to an EVF could be harmful.
Love the video, great knowledge, well presented
I could not avoid running my hand through my monitor to clean the dust specks several times during this video
Tons of helpful info, thank you!
When is the real world review coming😂
i like to compare the dslr cameras to xbox controllers vs early mirrorless dslr being like a playstation 3 controller lol, at least that was the back then. I'm totally in need of updating and gathering what information I can with new models and revisiting the pros n cons of the two. Thanks Jared
10:20: Note that EVFs are usually much larger than OVFs especially on crop bodies. And for low light some EVFs are actually better than OVFs.
Lofote, many would agree that EVFs are superior in low light. They are much better for long exposures to generate motion blur, such as with a waterfall. My Sonys work fine with a 10-stop ND filter. Every Sony owner should find out what the “Setting Effect” menu item does.
Thank you. Very educational comparison for a beginner like me.
Am I the only one that freaks out when I see dust and crap on the mirrors and sensors -- I'm not a true OCD, but that gets me pretty close.
Camera Education at its finest!
I'm even more confused.
I just wan a camera I can take wildlife & landscape photos.
@@gutenbird thank you!👍😊
Get DSLR, optical viewfinder is same as what ur eyes see.
buy a good smartphone
@@lokingloking Phone wont work well with wildlife cuz it doesn't have optical zoom.
M A D L I F E same I prefer the look and the feel of dslr but I feel like mirror less would be better quality
This is one of your best videos. Thanks.
Can't you rename the video as "picking on DSLR?"
Mirrorless camera marketing team :
"Hey, lets take the mirror off from DSLR, take out some (or many) feature, then we market it as 'mirrorless camera' as the name of modern version of DSLR, and make DSLR outdated because of its size"
Then 4 years later mirrorless camera become bigger, the lens also bigger (usually bigger than DSLR because the need distance between mirror and lens) much more like DSLR, and have feature like DSLR. while still dont have OVF.
Keep up the great work!
That thing about the shutter protecting the sensor while changing lenses can be fixed by a freaking firmware update, why the heck Sony hasn’t done it yet, are they stupid? What’s the deal?
Do you think it's possible?
Because they don’t want to change the size of the body
Angel Luciano canon's done it with the eos R. So Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Panny, and other brands should be able to catch up with this concept.
I was asking following Yavor Kapitanov's comment saying that it could be done with a firmware update...
Angel Luciano oh, I'm sorry! I thought you meant the possibility of having the shutter close down for protection. I'll read stuff better next time! Peace! 😁
