Just wanted to say a few things: 1. All photos showed for comparisons are straight out of camera with NO editing or retouching (6:47 and 8:59 notably). Any photos that are retouched are shown on their own, and are written that they are edited and retouched. Personally I like to see edited photos when I watch reviews so I wanted to include them. 2. These are my own thoughts and opinions based on MY experience using both mirrorless and DSLR in photoshoot situations. Are they "straight out of camera" as in 1. you are showing JPEGs, or 2. you are showing how they look in a RAW converter without adjustments? In either case, the comparison is not useful for evaluating cameras. When comparing JPEGs, you are comparing the JPEG processing in camera and most of all the default settings. Some manufacturers like to not have the OOC images to be too saturated or sharpened so that there is a bit more leeway in editing them. If you compare default appearances in a RAW converter (hopefully it was the same, if you used one), then you are comparing the default profiles and settings for the respective cameras. Some manufacturers request certain standard processing, some profiles may be newer than others, etc., making this a tricky subject. I don't doubt that you meant to give us a good basis for comparison, but unless a lot of effort is put in regarding the normalisation of processing, such comparisons do not tell one much about the cameras.
I know these are your thoughts, but honestly, it's your TALENT that I wish I could just purchase and then have for myself. I mostly do video, and talk about that on my channel. I've done video fo over 20 years, and for the life of me, I've taken photos just as long too. Practicing like a madman. I know camera settings like the back of my hand, I understand the concept of appropriate composition and storytelling when taking photos, and heck, I' even freelance for a photo studio to take event photography for money for a long time now. And....I still don't believe I can take one photo on my best day, that's as good as your worst photo on your worst day.... In other words...I appreciate you as a photographer, more than the equipment you use. :-)
I think the reason mirrorless cameras are sharper and 'super crisp' is because most of them use newly released, clinically sharp lenses, which isn't the case with DSLRs. In my opinion, if one wanted to upgrade to mirrorless, while also wanting to maintain a 'softer' look, they can use older lenses with an adapter for portraits while taking advantage of fast autofocus and live view that mirrorless cameras offer.
I literally just upgraded to Mirrorless myself. The sharpness was a big factor for me, because I find it a lot easier to soften photos than to sharpen photos in post, and I need sharp photos more often than soft photos. I also do video sometimes, and mirrorless has been way better for quickly and easily toggling back and forth between photo & video. I agree about the battery life issue, but I’m already used to carrying a bunch extra of batteries with me anyways because of my anxiety even with my old DSLR lol, so no big difference for me 😂 I’m happy so far! Oh, and I also switched from Canon to Sony. Great video!
For portraits I prefer DSLR ! It gives a nice soft look. Mirrorless gives very sharp images, so perfect for street photography. You can quickly snap photos on the go and get sharp images. I own a mirrorless camera now, but I really miss my DSLR camera for portraits. Mirrorless is easier to use - sharp, fast, eye tracking. However mirrorless SUCK the life out of the battery, lol.
everyone keeps mentioning eye tracking. y’all know dslrs also have eye tracking ? my canon eos SL3 shoots 4k, has a flip around touch screen, eye tracking ... if anyone reading this wants a good camera get the one i have. no need to spend $2500! if you know how to shoot your images will be sharp regardless

Reason why I recommend Mirrorless cameras over DSLR is because of the technology. DSLR are inferior to Mirrorless in every way no matter how many times people have tried to prove me wrong that DSLR are still better than Mirrorless, they always get shot down. Mirrorless has so many more features that makes it a great camera overall. Features such as Eye-autofocus, face detection, LIVE view, silent shooting, Electronic View Finder, 5-axis stabilization, 500+ focus points, and so much more. I dont recommend anyone to invest in DSLR cameras anymore since they are outdated and are still overpriced. The future of cameras is mirrorless and I'm glad that Sony invested so much into mirrorless back in 2013 or else we would still be stuck with DSLR to this day. In the next 5-8 years, we will see a shutterless camera when Global shutters or stacked C-MOS sensors becomes more affordable and better.
Jessica, you need to get onto Canon about letting you trial an R5 or an R6 (or even an R3) you can use all of your EF lenses with an adapter whilst you build up a collection of R mount lenses
I would love to but unfortunately Canon is not in contact with me. The only reason I was able to get the Sony mirrorless is because Sony sent me it (I can't keep it though) - which was super nice of them to let me try it before it's even released!

@@JessicaKobeissi I upgraded from the 5D Mark IV (owned it since it launched in 2016) to the Canon R5. The upgrade was seemless, and the issues you mentioned with the EVF just don't exist with that camera! I let a semi-newbie photographer, and let her use the 5D for 2 months. She loved it. Then when I gave her the R5 to use, she refused to ever use the 5D again. Sony in particular does not have the best LCD screen for those bright days either. Just some thoughts! But watching your video was very intriguing, because your opinions didn't seem influenced, or just matching what everyone else says, so thank you for that!
I agree. If you are used to Canon images, look, handling, menus and files workflow, I would also recommend the R system. I found Sony to be to extreme in IQ and the handling and menus are something to REALLY get used to... and they just don't feel like a proper Camera in my hands, but then again for new shooters who have no reference, that is no issue.
If you shoot weddings and editorial type of photography there's no question that mirrorless is the way to go. You'll never miss a shot because wrong exposure or have to look behind the camera again which is way more artistic plus, the low light performance is out of this world. For studio, architectural and landscape etc., DSLR still relevant cause is cheaper and now you can get a pro level camera for less than $2k. Cell phones are getting super good cameras need to get better software to keep up w HDR on phones and realistic looking imaging. Cheers!
I currently own and use a DSLR but have been seeing all over social media that people use mirrorless now. but i love this video because i feel like i have a better understanding of the two. I would love a mirrorless for travel.
The hype is real!! This is coming from a long time Canon 5D Mark IV user. I love my Canon R6 so much.❤️ But I loooove that crispness and the eye tracking, that’s what sold me on it. Super surprised you had issues with battery life. When my best friend who seconds shoots weddings for me who uses a canon 5D Mark IV (I use a Sony A7Riii) she has to change her batteries multiple times and I never have to change my batteries during the wedding day. Also I can see so much better in direct like with the EVF over the OVF. I think it just takes a week or so to get used to.
Yes! I recently had to start changing my battery on my Canon 5Dmk4 more often too! I had a micro wedding and i had to change batteries after the ceremony!!
Generally a good discussion, but two major issues: 1. IQ: DSLRs do not produce softer images. What you are seeing are differences in lenses and at most different choices regarding Bayer-AA filters. Some DSLRs and MILCs use them, some don't. Also, due to the need to perform AF on the sensor, a number of (in particular Sony) mirrorless cameras can produce striping or banding artefacts. DSLRs that focus on still photography do not have these issues. 2. EVF. You should have made a bigger point about the lag the EVFs produce. For anything that moves, one is always a bit behind the action. The standard refresh rate also is anything but pleasant when panning. Some models offer higher refresh rates as an option but these eat into the battery even more so than the standard EVF usage already does. I find some of the stuttering that can occur with EVFs very off-putting as well. For instance, if one engages AF on a Fuji or Panasonic, the EVF stutters. Many EVFs reduce the resolution during AF. For someone who wants a WYSIWYG experience, EVFs can be great (except when you use flash), but for anyone who is easily irritated by lag, stuttering, temporary loss of resolution, artificial looking white balance, etc. an OVF is far better.
The striping banding in mirrorless/Sony cameras is probably because of the electric shutter not the mechanical one. If you switch to mechanical shutter it should be the same as DSLR.
Pretty good job explaining the differences between the camera types. I have 2 DSLRs and 2 Mirrorless cameras and prefer the mirrorless because of their size and because I can see that my exposure and settings are where I want them. It's made me shoot in Manual way more than I used to. Actually, I believe that Canon's mirrorless cameras have more lens options because of the EF-EOS R Mount adapter. You can use RF, EF, and EF-S lenses on Canon's R cameras. Sony also has a lot of E-mount lenses to choose from for their mirrorless cameras.

Not sure if it was changed, but by default the screens on Sony cameras aren't super bright, but the settings can be changed to make them much brighter. Definitely needed shooting on sunny days
Great video, but a couple things 1. You can get that soft look based on the lens you use or use pro mist filters. I don’t get sticking with a dslr for soft images. Using a tamron 24-70 ART and a 1/4 pro mist I get that soft dreamy look while still nailing focus every time. 2. Nor have I ever had lag on any three of my mirrorless. And I was a DIE HARD DSLR person when mirrorless was becoming more popular. 3. I also don’t understand the battery thing. My a7iii and siii are phenomenal I’ve hard worse battery on my old nikon DSLRs. Plus you can always hook up phantom power with an external battery with just a usbc cable.
Good video Jessica. You make some very good points in this video. Before you switch to Sony. I like to recommend to you that you try the Canon Mirrorless system like the Canon EOS R5, and R6 cameras. One benefit that you will get by going mirrorless with Canon is that you can still use your EF lenses on the R5, and R6 with the EF TO RF adapter. The tech in the R5, and R6 is really good. It's up there with Sony. The final choice is yours's , but i strongly recommend you give the Canon mirrorless system a try before you make your final decision.
Great Vs. video! I started off with a DSLR: Canon EOS Rebel T3i since 2013 and i now use a Mirrorless: Canon EOS RP. To me i love my RP wayyy better mostly because of how sharp my images are now. I feel as if i'll get use to the digital screen details as well! Also my T3i is soo old and i needed an upgrade.. 😉

I think you will step your game up when you switch to mirrorless. It makes portrait sessions so much easier if you know what you are doing. Fast, reliable eye-AF and live-view are game changers for me.
* I never had issues viewing my EVF shooting back-lit subjects. It comes down to how the camera is ergonomically designed to "cup" your eye. Composing thru the LCD in that situation, Forget about it. * The sharpness differences comes down to native lens qualities. DSLRs generally focuses off the mirror metering overlay and calibration differences of Mirror point focus to Sensor focus can be slightly off a bit. What the OVF is seeing in focusing might not exactly coincide when the shot is exposed on the sensor, which is mostly why mirrorless is generally sharper on top of modern optical designs; the sensor is the primer point of focusing and native mirrorless system lenses are calibrated and designed For that sensor. * I have to agree with the super sharpness of mirrorless which is why I like to adapt my DSLR/SLR lenses to my mirrorless from time to time. * Getting into DSLRs long term is a risk being that DSLRs are currently being phased out as Mirrorless tech improves, but are still fun tho. * Until Very recently, I was long into the camp as a sports journalist who shoots fast action, DSLRs with OVFs are unbeatable to capture that decisive instant moment when you see it with OVFs not having lag obviously [except the time it takes for the mirror and shutter to open], However, Nikon just announced their flagship Pro mirrorless camera that changed my opinion on that. It has no shutter and zero blackout, instant refresh rate in the EVF due to a separate processing power for that reason and tests have show it to be as fast as shooting with an OVF. But that is for extreme fast shooting with new AF tracking to match Sony's AF... oh and battery life on that camera is monstrous due to the Huge pro battery it has, rated as all day and more on one charge. Like you said, research, research and research... and get what fits your shooting style. I use both systems and lately I've been more invested in mirrorless going forward.
dslr cameras have the live view mode too which is looking at the screen on the back of the camera just like the mirrorless but drains the battery more quickly
I do like the mirrorless camera, although I am more used to the DSLR. It does always amaze me how crisp the mirrorless pictures are. I think that a mirrorless camera is a little more complicated with all the filter settings an stuff. It's just what you're used to... I love my DSLR a lot!
You might like Fujifilm… X-Pro line has both EVF and OVF, amazing Fuji colours, some lenses have the softness you like and some have the Sony style crispness. Just buy extra batteries… haha

Guilia, i recommend to just go straight for the Sony a7iii. Do not get any of the 2nd generation Sony cameras like the a7ii, a7Rii and a7Sii as their focus points are too slow. Since you are wanting to make a career out of photography, a7iii will be the better choice as its price at $2,000 u.s. dollars right now
Darling in this case the hype is real. When I bought that EOSR, All my problems just went away. Actually my 5D3 is just gathering dust right more. It’s like shooting with a brick. Mirrorless is definately the future. Once we have a way of using it with flash. That’s the end of dslr. Like finito.
I switched to mirrorless back in June. It was a major adjustment with the body and re-doing my settings, but over all I enjoy using it. I still shoot my mirrorless like my DSLR bcuz I'm so use to looking through the view finder. A lot of my co workers shoot mirrorless and they don't bother looking into the structure of their camera body or learning how to use it manually. They'll tell me to have my ISO and apeture set to auto and I look at them like they're crazy 😳
I've played with mirrorless from all three big brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony) and I've tried so hard to like them but no matter what I do, I just plain don't like them. But I'd damn near sell my car for a Canon EOS-1D X Mark III after trying one out for the first time (finally) yesterday! If you're looking for a piece of kit, the best thing you can do is actually TRY IT. The experience you have using a camera can make or break everything because in the end, it doesn't matter if it's the best model a company has released if you hate using it.
Yes and it's so great, especially the hybrid viewfinder with the small zoomed in screen which helps a ton with manual focusing while keeping the optical viewfinder

Get the r6. Between the R5 , the R6 has Better low light capabilities. The R5 just has more mega pixels. I have the canon r6 I have two of them to be exact and i do all kinds of photography
Love your shots as always. I also used to have the Canon 50mm 1.2 on a 5D and now have R5 and RF 50mm 1.2. Some of that increased sharpness is due to autofocus calibration which you need to do on a DSLR (but it's never perfect as it uses the mirror as you so eloquently explained). Whereas the mirrorless focus is directly on the sensor so no calibration needed. Also the new mirrorless 1.2's are HUGE due to new lens elements but much sharper than the previous 1.2s
I left my concern about sharpness for more liberty in practice more creative and quick images. Not always sharp is more important, I prefer a soft skin and be more careful how the image talk to the peoples, the story she tells.
On the viewfinder, funny thing is. an SLR was originally designed so you could see exactly what your camera sees with aperatures and filters applied rather than using a viewfinder on the side. Now with digital filters possible the EVF is the only way to get everything. Would be interested to know if mirrorless cameras ever display photos taken via the EVF instead of the back so you can view in sunlight.
Typically, mirrorless have better low light performance which can be better for video. The DSLR is still king for organic image quality, but that is becoming very negligible these days. Everything else, you already said.

Regarding the OVF vs EVF in low light: I understand where you are coming from but to be honest i find it to be completely opposite. When it's completely dark, on OVF you do not see anything. At all. On EVF you can see it bright, even if it preview may seem grainy and noisy. When i shoot at home studio and i kill all the light except for the flashes, it makes huge difference for me, since i am able to focus at all. Also i was quite surprised when you mentioned that you could not see anything on EVF in backlight situations. That never happened to me, even on such grandpa mirrorless like my A7II or Olympus E-M10 i had before that. Do you mean that the EVF seems to get confused about how bright is it supposed to be and for example darkens it too much when it should not? I'm pretty sure you can change that in settings.
This video is great for beginners but I think it would’ve been better if you were make another video doing a comparison between a DSLR Canon and a mirrorless Canon.
Well for me I would have to disagree on the part that it is hard to see when in harsh light with the evf. I have my canon R6. And I can see clearly everything and even on my screen. I live in miami where there is harsh light everyday. And I can see perfectly clear. Before my R6 I use to show with the 5D mark 4 and man what a difference. So much better 🤷♀️🤷♀️

It was nice to get a more current comparison about the two as I am FINALLY considering investing in new equipment. It’s kinda wild because I started with mirrorless and now am considering DSLR when for most others it is the opposite.
It is understood that a mirrorless produce crisper images than a DSLR. This is not only because of accurate focusing of the mirrorless but mainly due to superior optics of the newly developed lenses for the mirrorless.
awesome review!! I just added bought an R6 after I tried it. I also tried the sony a7 but the R6 was such a nice experience. and the price is very interesting. so now I feel like I have the best duo cameras: 5DmarkIV and canon R6 ! been using them on a few weddings together its amazing! I love the 5D too much to leave it ! you explained beautifully the optic viewer experience especially when we have that shooting in raw mindset ! its actually the video capabilities of the R6 that made me do the switch : they have an integrated stabilizer and slightly less bulky with a gimbal XD (but the 5D also has 4K recording so no stress !)
I shoot nikon mirroless and often in direct light and although the back screen can be hard to view in direct light but I never had any problems with delays, glitches or having an image too dim to see. Also the battery is good for a solid 3 hours of constant shooting. Last 7 hour wedding I went through 1.5 batteries. I do agree that DSLR gives a softer portraits look, but there is a “dream” filter in Nikon that gives same softness. High ISO handling is amazing on my mirrorless if an image is exposed properly in camera. Exposure adjustments in postproduction can give grain which is expected. That’s my experience but I have never shot other mirrorless brands. I do love the look that canon r6 gives. My second shooter uses that model and I love her images SOOC as well.
You are wrong about lens options, at least with Canon. All of Canon's dslr lenes will work on Canon's Mirrorless cameras with an adaptor. From what I hear, they work perfectly. It is impossible to use mirrorless lenses on dslr so Canon's Mirrorless have way more options.
Mirrorless is my choice because I can see exactly what my sensor sees. But if battery life is your main concern, then mirrorless is not a good choice (unless you pack a bunch of batteries). One thing true of all cameras: there are always tradeoffs.
My mirrorless is amazing for not needing to do test shots but I find that i have missed candids at weddings because the mirrorless takes longer to wake back up and focus if you’ve not used it for a couple of minutes.
Some of the differences depend on brand and model, not DSLR vs mirrorless. Eg @6:45, which depends on the jpeg setting (my DSLR has ~10 choices); you can adjust in post-processing anyway. Many DSLRs have touch screens and silent shutters, and all have an electronic live view screen. There is also no reason in principle for the M-Less pictures to be sharper, they use the same sensors and lens designs.
i have a sony, and sony lenses are usually more expensive than nikon or canon, so i bought an adapter and i can buy canon lenses which are very good, and they work very well, I recommend it if your budget is tight or if you already have canon or nikon lenses and you only want to change to mirroless body and use your other lenses
You cane get a canon m50 aps-c and buy a speed buster it just makes it a super investment considering you cane use a M42 and a M32 adaptor ring on it and use old vintage lenses wich are very chipe and gives them new life
I’ve seen hella beat up a7iiis sell for like 1400 and it debuted at 2k. It gives me hope because mine is chipped on the corners but is functionally still superb.
I have a 5DMK3 and it struggles in low light is it worth upgrading just for that reason. I’m using a 85mm 1.4L and at IS0 3200 the camera is always hunting to find focus.

I agree about the battery life issue, but I’m already used to carrying a bunch extra of batteries with me anyways because of my anxiety even with my old DSLR lol, so no big difference for me 😂 I’m happy so far!

For portraits I prefer DSLR ! It gives a nice soft look. Mirrorless gives very sharp images, so perfect for street photography. You can quickly snap photos on the go and get sharp images. I own a mirrorless camera now, but I really miss my DSLR camera for portraits. Mirrorless is easier to use - sharp, fast, eye tracking. However mirrorless SUCK the life out of the battery, lol.
everyone keeps mentioning eye tracking. y’all know dslrs also have eye tracking ? my canon eos SL3 shoots 4k, has a flip around touch screen, eye tracking ... if anyone reading this wants a good camera get the one i have. no need to spend $2500! if you know how to shoot your images will be sharp regardless

This is a very well done video that clearly explains the difference between the two types of cameras.
Reason why I recommend Mirrorless cameras over DSLR is because of the technology. DSLR are inferior to Mirrorless in every way no matter how many times people have tried to prove me wrong that DSLR are still better than Mirrorless, they always get shot down. Mirrorless has so many more features that makes it a great camera overall. Features such as Eye-autofocus, face detection, LIVE view, silent shooting, Electronic View Finder, 5-axis stabilization, 500+ focus points, and so much more. I dont recommend anyone to invest in DSLR cameras anymore since they are outdated and are still overpriced. The future of cameras is mirrorless and I'm glad that Sony invested so much into mirrorless back in 2013 or else we would still be stuck with DSLR to this day. In the next 5-8 years, we will see a shutterless camera when Global shutters or stacked C-MOS sensors becomes more affordable and better.

Jessica, you need to get onto Canon about letting you trial an R5 or an R6 (or even an R3) you can use all of your EF lenses with an adapter whilst you build up a collection of R mount lenses
Agree, the comparison should have been with a Canon mirrorless. And as you say, with the adapter you don't need to spend a fortune on new lenses.
I would love to but unfortunately Canon is not in contact with me. The only reason I was able to get the Sony mirrorless is because Sony sent me it (I can't keep it though) - which was super nice of them to let me try it before it's even released!

@@JessicaKobeissi I upgraded from the 5D Mark IV (owned it since it launched in 2016) to the Canon R5. The upgrade was seemless, and the issues you mentioned with the EVF just don't exist with that camera! I let a semi-newbie photographer, and let her use the 5D for 2 months. She loved it. Then when I gave her the R5 to use, she refused to ever use the 5D again. Sony in particular does not have the best LCD screen for those bright days either. Just some thoughts! But watching your video was very intriguing, because your opinions didn't seem influenced, or just matching what everyone else says, so thank you for that!
I agree. If you are used to Canon images, look, handling, menus and files workflow, I would also recommend the R system. I found Sony to be to extreme in IQ and the handling and menus are something to REALLY get used to... and they just don't feel like a proper Camera in my hands, but then again for new shooters who have no reference, that is no issue.
If you shoot weddings and editorial type of photography there's no question that mirrorless is the way to go. You'll never miss a shot because wrong exposure or have to look behind the camera again which is way more artistic plus, the low light performance is out of this world. For studio, architectural and landscape etc., DSLR still relevant cause is cheaper and now you can get a pro level camera for less than $2k. Cell phones are getting super good cameras need to get better software to keep up w HDR on phones and realistic looking imaging. Cheers!

The hype is real!! This is coming from a long time Canon 5D Mark IV user. I love my Canon R6 so much.❤️ But I loooove that crispness and the eye tracking, that’s what sold me on it. I think you can add softness in editing if that’s a main concern. Definitely gotta try out Canon’s mirrorless options Jessica!!👏🏼
Super surprised you had issues with battery life. When my best friend who seconds shoots weddings for me who uses a canon 5D Mark IV (I use a Sony A7Riii) she has to change her batteries multiple times and I never have to change my batteries during the wedding day.
Also I can see so much better in direct like with the EVF over the OVF. I think it just takes a week or so to get used to.
Yes! I recently had to start changing my battery on my Canon 5Dmk4 more often too! I had a micro wedding and i had to change batteries after the ceremony!!
Generally a good discussion, but two major issues: 1. IQ: DSLRs do not produce softer images. What you are seeing are differences in lenses and at most different choices regarding Bayer-AA filters. Some DSLRs and MILCs use them, some don't. Also, due to the need to perform AF on the sensor, a number of (in particular Sony) mirrorless cameras can produce striping or banding artefacts. DSLRs that focus on still photography do not have these issues. 2. EVF. You should have made a bigger point about the lag the EVFs produce. For anything that moves, one is always a bit behind the action. The standard refresh rate also is anything but pleasant when panning. Some models offer higher refresh rates as an option but these eat into the battery even more so than the standard EVF usage already does. I find some of the stuttering that can occur with EVFs very off-putting as well. For instance, if one engages AF on a Fuji or Panasonic, the EVF stutters. Many EVFs reduce the resolution during AF. For someone who wants a WYSIWYG experience, EVFs can be great (except when you use flash), but for anyone who is easily irritated by lag, stuttering, temporary loss of resolution, artificial looking white balance, etc. an OVF is far better.
The striping banding in mirrorless/Sony cameras is probably because of the electric shutter not the mechanical one. If you switch to mechanical shutter it should be the same as DSLR.

Pretty good job explaining the differences between the camera types. I have 2 DSLRs and 2 Mirrorless cameras and prefer the mirrorless because of their size and because I can see that my exposure and settings are where I want them. It's made me shoot in Manual way more than I used to.
Actually, I believe that Canon's mirrorless cameras have more lens options because of the EF-EOS R Mount adapter. You can use RF, EF, and EF-S lenses on Canon's R cameras. Sony also has a lot of E-mount lenses to choose from for their mirrorless cameras.
You can use all Canon lenses with Sony as well, you just need an adapter :)

Not sure if it was changed, but by default the screens on Sony cameras aren't super bright, but the settings can be changed to make them much brighter. Definitely needed shooting on sunny days
Great video, but a couple things
1. You can get that soft look based on the lens you use or use pro mist filters. I don’t get sticking with a dslr for soft images. Using a tamron 24-70 ART and a 1/4 pro mist I get that soft dreamy look while still nailing focus every time.
2. Nor have I ever had lag on any three of my mirrorless. And I was a DIE HARD DSLR person when mirrorless was becoming more popular.
3. I also don’t understand the battery thing. My a7iii and siii are phenomenal I’ve hard worse battery on my old nikon DSLRs. Plus you can always hook up phantom power with an external battery with just a usbc cable.
Good video Jessica. You make some very good points in this video. Before you switch to Sony. I like to recommend to you that you try the Canon Mirrorless system like the Canon EOS R5, and R6 cameras. One benefit that you will get by going mirrorless with Canon is that you can still use your EF lenses on the R5, and R6 with the EF TO RF adapter. The tech in the R5, and R6 is really good. It's up there with Sony. The final choice is yours's , but i strongly recommend you give the Canon mirrorless system a try before you make your final decision.
Great Vs. video! I started off with a DSLR: Canon EOS Rebel T3i since 2013 and i now use a Mirrorless: Canon EOS RP. To me i love my RP wayyy better mostly because of how sharp my images are now. I feel as if i'll get use to the digital screen details as well! Also my T3i is soo old and i needed an upgrade.. 😉

I think you will step your game up when you switch to mirrorless. It makes portrait sessions so much easier if you know what you are doing. Fast, reliable eye-AF and live-view are game changers for me.

* I never had issues viewing my EVF shooting back-lit subjects. It comes down to how the camera is ergonomically designed to "cup" your eye. Composing thru the LCD in that situation, Forget about it.
* The sharpness differences comes down to native lens qualities. DSLRs generally focuses off the mirror metering overlay and calibration differences of Mirror point focus to Sensor focus can be slightly off a bit. What the OVF is seeing in focusing might not exactly coincide when the shot is exposed on the sensor, which is mostly why mirrorless is generally sharper on top of modern optical designs; the sensor is the primer point of focusing and native mirrorless system lenses are calibrated and designed For that sensor.
* I have to agree with the super sharpness of mirrorless which is why I like to adapt my DSLR/SLR lenses to my mirrorless from time to time.
* Getting into DSLRs long term is a risk being that DSLRs are currently being phased out as Mirrorless tech improves, but are still fun tho.
* Until Very recently, I was long into the camp as a sports journalist who shoots fast action, DSLRs with OVFs are unbeatable to capture that decisive instant moment when you see it with OVFs not having lag obviously [except the time it takes for the mirror and shutter to open], However, Nikon just announced their flagship Pro mirrorless camera that changed my opinion on that. It has no shutter and zero blackout, instant refresh rate in the EVF due to a separate processing power for that reason and tests have show it to be as fast as shooting with an OVF. But that is for extreme fast shooting with new AF tracking to match Sony's AF... oh and battery life on that camera is monstrous due to the Huge pro battery it has, rated as all day and more on one charge.
Like you said, research, research and research... and get what fits your shooting style.
I use both systems and lately I've been more invested in mirrorless going forward.

dslr cameras have the live view mode too which is looking at the screen on the back of the camera just like the mirrorless but drains the battery more quickly
I do like the mirrorless camera, although I am more used to the DSLR. It does always amaze me how crisp the mirrorless pictures are. I think that a mirrorless camera is a little more complicated with all the filter settings an stuff. It's just what you're used to... I love my DSLR a lot!
You might like Fujifilm… X-Pro line has both EVF and OVF, amazing Fuji colours, some lenses have the softness you like and some have the Sony style crispness. Just buy extra batteries… haha
Nice video as always. There is no problem with exposing the mirror. It's the sensor that should be protected from dust n scratches.

Guilia, i recommend to just go straight for the Sony a7iii. Do not get any of the 2nd generation Sony cameras like the a7ii, a7Rii and a7Sii as their focus points are too slow. Since you are wanting to make a career out of photography, a7iii will be the better choice as its price at $2,000 u.s. dollars right now

I noticed on your mirrorless and dslr pictures the DSLR captured more details and lines especially on the clothes.
Darling in this case the hype is real. When I bought that EOSR, All my problems just went away. Actually my 5D3 is just gathering dust right more. It’s like shooting with a brick.
Mirrorless is definately the future. Once we have a way of using it with flash. That’s the end of dslr. Like finito.
I switched to mirrorless back in June. It was a major adjustment with the body and re-doing my settings, but over all I enjoy using it. I still shoot my mirrorless like my DSLR bcuz I'm so use to looking through the view finder. A lot of my co workers shoot mirrorless and they don't bother looking into the structure of their camera body or learning how to use it manually. They'll tell me to have my ISO and apeture set to auto and I look at them like they're crazy 😳
I've played with mirrorless from all three big brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony) and I've tried so hard to like them but no matter what I do, I just plain don't like them. But I'd damn near sell my car for a Canon EOS-1D X Mark III after trying one out for the first time (finally) yesterday! If you're looking for a piece of kit, the best thing you can do is actually TRY IT. The experience you have using a camera can make or break everything because in the end, it doesn't matter if it's the best model a company has released if you hate using it.

Yes and it's so great, especially the hybrid viewfinder with the small zoomed in screen which helps a ton with manual focusing while keeping the optical viewfinder

Get the r6. Between the R5 , the R6 has Better low light capabilities. The R5 just has more mega pixels. I have the canon r6 I have two of them to be exact and i do all kinds of photography
Do you use back button focus?
Love your shots as always. I also used to have the Canon 50mm 1.2 on a 5D and now have R5 and RF 50mm 1.2. Some of that increased sharpness is due to autofocus calibration which you need to do on a DSLR (but it's never perfect as it uses the mirror as you so eloquently explained). Whereas the mirrorless focus is directly on the sensor so no calibration needed. Also the new mirrorless 1.2's are HUGE due to new lens elements but much sharper than the previous 1.2s

I left my concern about sharpness for more liberty in practice more creative and quick images. Not always sharp is more important, I prefer a soft skin and be more careful how the image talk to the peoples, the story she tells.
On the viewfinder, funny thing is. an SLR was originally designed so you could see exactly what your camera sees with aperatures and filters applied rather than using a viewfinder on the side. Now with digital filters possible the EVF is the only way to get everything.
Would be interested to know if mirrorless cameras ever display photos taken via the EVF instead of the back so you can view in sunlight.
Typically, mirrorless have better low light performance which can be better for video. The DSLR is still king for organic image quality, but that is becoming very negligible these days. Everything else, you already said.

Regarding the OVF vs EVF in low light: I understand where you are coming from but to be honest i find it to be completely opposite. When it's completely dark, on OVF you do not see anything. At all. On EVF you can see it bright, even if it preview may seem grainy and noisy.
When i shoot at home studio and i kill all the light except for the flashes, it makes huge difference for me, since i am able to focus at all.
Also i was quite surprised when you mentioned that you could not see anything on EVF in backlight situations. That never happened to me, even on such grandpa mirrorless like my A7II or Olympus E-M10 i had before that. Do you mean that the EVF seems to get confused about how bright is it supposed to be and for example darkens it too much when it should not?
I'm pretty sure you can change that in settings.
I was thinking the same things. Mirrorless are definitely easier to use in low light situations.

Well for me I would have to disagree on the part that it is hard to see when in harsh light with the evf. I have my canon R6. And I can see clearly everything and even on my screen. I live in miami where there is harsh light everyday. And I can see perfectly clear. Before my R6 I use to show with the 5D mark 4 and man what a difference. So much better 🤷♀️🤷♀️

It was nice to get a more current comparison about the two as I am FINALLY considering investing in new equipment. It’s kinda wild because I started with mirrorless and now am considering DSLR when for most others it is the opposite.
It is understood that a mirrorless produce crisper images than a DSLR. This is not only because of accurate focusing of the mirrorless but mainly due to superior optics of the newly developed lenses for the mirrorless.
awesome review!! I just added bought an R6 after I tried it. I also tried the sony a7 but the R6 was such a nice experience. and the price is very interesting. so now I feel like I have the best duo cameras: 5DmarkIV and canon R6 ! been using them on a few weddings together its amazing! I love the 5D too much to leave it ! you explained beautifully the optic viewer experience especially when we have that shooting in raw mindset !
its actually the video capabilities of the R6 that made me do the switch : they have an integrated stabilizer and slightly less bulky with a gimbal XD (but the 5D also has 4K recording so no stress !)

I shoot nikon mirroless and often in direct light and although the back screen can be hard to view in direct light but I never had any problems with delays, glitches or having an image too dim to see.
Also the battery is good for a solid 3 hours of constant shooting.
Last 7 hour wedding I went through 1.5 batteries.
I do agree that DSLR gives a softer portraits look, but there is a “dream” filter in Nikon that gives same softness.
High ISO handling is amazing on my mirrorless if an image is exposed properly in camera. Exposure adjustments in postproduction can give grain which is expected.
That’s my experience but I have never shot other mirrorless brands. I do love the look that canon r6 gives. My second shooter uses that model and I love her images SOOC as well.

You are wrong about lens options, at least with Canon. All of Canon's dslr lenes will work on Canon's Mirrorless cameras with an adaptor. From what I hear, they work perfectly. It is impossible to use mirrorless lenses on dslr so Canon's Mirrorless have way more options.
They work more than great I have a few RF but I still pick up EF lenses when I’m shooting. And I have the canon R6.
Mirrorless is my choice because I can see exactly what my sensor sees. But if battery life is your main concern, then mirrorless is not a good choice (unless you pack a bunch of batteries). One thing true of all cameras: there are always tradeoffs.
My canon r6 lasts me forever. Sometimes I be shooting for 6 hours. Never had an issue. But I always clear extra batteries with me just in case
My mirrorless is amazing for not needing to do test shots but I find that i have missed candids at weddings because the mirrorless takes longer to wake back up and focus if you’ve not used it for a couple of minutes.

Some of the differences depend on brand and model, not DSLR vs mirrorless. Eg @6:45, which depends on the jpeg setting (my DSLR has ~10 choices); you can adjust in post-processing anyway. Many DSLRs have touch screens and silent shutters, and all have an electronic live view screen. There is also no reason in principle for the M-Less pictures to be sharper, they use the same sensors and lens designs.
i have a sony, and sony lenses are usually more expensive than nikon or canon, so i bought an adapter and i can buy canon lenses which are very good, and they work very well, I recommend it if your budget is tight or if you already have canon or nikon lenses and you only want to change to mirroless body and use your other lenses
You cane get a canon m50 aps-c and buy a speed buster it just makes it a super investment considering you cane use a M42 and a M32 adaptor ring on it and use old vintage lenses wich are very chipe and gives them new life

I have a 5DMK3 and it struggles in low light is it worth upgrading just for that reason. I’m using a 85mm 1.4L and at IS0 3200 the camera is always hunting to find focus.
Dslr's have mostly their proprietary lenses to use while mirrorless cameras can use even old vintage lenses that's one reason I chose mirrorless.
But those lens are still manual focus.
