    Canon has spent the last four years focused on full-frame cameras, R3, R5, R6, RP, R. And now they turn their attention to cropped-sensor RF mount bodies. This video is to help you decide which NEW Canon EOS Mirrorless Camera might be the right one for you in 2022 2023. I've put the Canon R7, R10 and RP specs up against each other to help you decide. We chose the include the RP as it's priced really well for a full-frame body and might be a nice option for some.

    "Invest in glass" is the advice given by photographers with the best cameras money can buy.

    • @timothyrat
      @timothyrat Год назад +72

      Disagree. They say "invest in glass" because they are professionals and have used both high-end bodies AND lenses. And they truly feel if you are going to invest money into upgrading gear, it's more important to focus on good glass. You can have an R3 but if you are using a cheap lens, you will get crap pics. Plus good glass holds its value.

    • @alansach8437

      If you spend $5,000.00 today on a good pro lens, in eight years you will be able to sell it for $4,500.00. Maybe more than you paid for it if inflation has driven up the price of a new one.
      If you spend $5,000.00 today on a pro camera, in eight years it will be obsolete and you will be lucky to get $1,500.00. And that's assuming normal times, not when they do something funky, like come out with mirrorless! Then your camera REALLY takes a hit! That's language anyone can understand. So, if you need both and have a limited budget, buy a used camera (you can get a heck of a deal on used DSLRS right now, because everyone is trading them in for mirrorless), and spend your real money on glass. Note: In this "unusual" time DSLR glass also took a hit, but not nearly like cameras. Glass is glass, for a long time. I can still use twenty year old DSLR glass on a modern mirrorless camera with an adapter. It's still great glass. But a twenty year old camera is worthless. No one wants a Canon 1d today!! But a first generation Canon 600 f4L?? Heavy beast, but still takes great shots and will work with your R3!

      After 6 years doing photography starting with canon sl2 I must say glass matters not the body. Now using a7riii with GM lenses and I’ll say it again I wish I invested in good lenses.

      I’m using the glass from my first slr rebel 35mm film camera. These R series are very compelling compared to my dslr, rebel t3i i’m looking at a 16-35mm lens or the 11-24mm of my current camera ,similar price. That is why i am watching these comparisons.

    I love my RP. Great little full frame camera which really encourages you to take photos. I’m not sure there is ever a ‘best’ choice, we all like different things. For me the RP is just a great camera which is under appreciated.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox Год назад +17

      The RP is a brilliant little camera and far better than Jared realises. It has very accurate and competent autofocus, great low light performance and has more customisable buttons than the R6 (where the R6 has a rear dial, the RP has 4 customisable buttons which also act as a joypad).

    • @energieinfo21
      @energieinfo21 Год назад +3

      @Paul Phillipson
      Yes, RP is a very good camera in terms of image quality and usability but in my opinion it is a bit on the slower side. But that doesn't matter in lots of situations like landscape, portrait, macro, ... And it is light and compact (like maybe Canon AE-1 or similar cameras). If it had cropped 4k with DPAF maybe it has been enough for me but ...:
      I need a 4k compatible camera to collect video samples (I am dreaming of a documetary movie!) so I stumbled over the R7 and I must say: A very capable package if you need speed, stability of freehand recordings, reliable movie AF + more reach with telephoto lenses.
      Finally I like both cameras very much and are glad to have access to both tools!

      I think when you are testing high-end gear, to tend to be biased in terms of performance and quality. But when I show what I shot with my RP, my friends tend to be impressed because they almost see only smartphone photography nowadays.
      It's like buying an expensive microphone. You think you can tell the difference because you paid 2000€, but your audience may not.

      Definately the better pick.
      I had and enjoyed the RP since release, but the R7 made me switch to APS-C back completely again, just a much better value as a hybrid camera.
      The thing is..... if i would not mind the better AF features for animals and 4k or slowmo video, i would still prefer the RP (better photography camera for less money)

    You’ve helped me with my decision to stick with the RP despite the temptation to move to the R10. I photograph mostly stationary subjects; no need for faster FPS. The nice bokeh with the FF sensor is appreciated, too. Thanks for making your choice relevant to you and encouraging us to make our choices based on our needs and purposes. Mostly, though, thanks for promoting investing in good glass. I’ve added an EF 70-300 and an RF 50 with very satisfying results each.

    Perfect video for me. When I started watching, I had three tabs open at B&H: R10, R7, and RP. They're all kinda sorta doable on my budget, but I wasn't sure which would be the best investment. This video nicely explains the differences, and it's helped me settle on the R7 as the current leader in my camera search.

    I’ve gotten the R7 a while back and I’ve loved it since then. Coming from a T7 it’s nothing but a complete upgrade packed with features like the higher 32mp count compared to the 24 (which is still capable imo) and 4K up to 60fps. Even the R10 would have been a great choice to step up to but I am very happy with my R7 and recommend it for those with the budget

    Great video! I have an R5 and 6dm2 with great EF an RF lenses, all of which I love. However, it all gets pretty heavy on long trips trudging through airports, bus terminals, etc. I bought an R10 just for travelling. It was on sale in December for under $800, and it works great with all my old EF-S lenses. It was just too good a deal to pass up. My load has been lightened significantly and I still hope to bring home some great shots.

    It is a good comparison, but the camera itself serve its purpose to the user. RP is very good when taking portraits to be honest, but if you're taking sports or fast action photos, better to grab faster cameras. It really depends on the user. Coming from a very old 40D, the EOS RP was a huge step up for me. Finally, I could fulfill my dream of stepping up to a fullframe sensor. I really love that image quality, especially for stills or landscapes and low light conditions. I also started taking pictures of some birds in a nearby park - works just fine. But remember, I stepped up from a 14 years old camera :D
    Why did I upgrade: The autofocus system of my 40D was a little bit "special", it didn't hit that well. Now with those in-sensor dual pixels, the very most shots are now perfectly sharp, even with older lenses!
    And I got that RP body for less than 800€/US$, which was a awesome deal! But I understand, that if you want to shoot fast moving objects, you may consider buying another camera.
    Maybe there will be something like an EOS RP II - but that will probably be not be that cheaply available.
    I would be very happy if the animal eye tracking was being added to the RP - but I think this won't happen.
    Overall price/perfomance I give that RP a very good 4,5/5*. Just a notch to slow, but the other characteristics are amazing fot its price.

    I have an RP and have been buying decent RF glass. I'm looking at moving up to the R6 and keeping the RP as a backup or hopefully having he wife become more interested and using it as a full frame introduction. The RP still takes good photos for what I have used it for and to be fair it will still hold its own against the R10 and R7 in many instances. In my opinion, a natural jump from the RP would be an R6, or even an R5 or R3, if you have the bucks. Great review. Keep them coming.

      For all the benefits of the newer tech in the R7/R10, the fact remains that the RP is a full frame camera. The better dynamic range and Image Quality is definitely better in the long run. Besides if you intend to upgrade to the R6 in the future, the RP is the better choice as they can share the lenses.

  • @thetoyota86perspective54

    I'd prefer the R10 because one thing to take into account is the high megapixel of the R7 means you need high resolving lenses. Not all EF lenses work well with it. The R10 doesnt have this issue and you dont have to worry about the lens "focus hunting" or getting shots that are not that sharp.
    The only thing I wish it had was weather sealing.
    I currently use and love an M50 I and II and have all the EF-M lenses and a bunch of EF lenses so no need to "upgrade" yet but id wait out for Canon to release an R10 with weather sealing. If not the R10 will eventually be my next step especially as a sports photographer

Of those I think the Z5 has the best image quality esp. in low light, the Fuji has the best lenses available, and the R7 has the best autofocus. So it's a pretty tough call.

And at $900 for the body (what I spent), no camera in that price bracket can come close. the images are gorgeous and you can definitely use it in a studio environment. Add some lights and some quality lenses and you can produce professional results. It's not my primary camera (the r5 does that for me) but I enjoy using it more than my Sony a7r3. The a7r3 is better but in a studio environment I don't need high framrerate and I have lights so I don't need low light performance.

      You mustn't know how to get the most out of it, the RP is fantastic in low light. You have to overexpose (keeping an eye on the histogram to not blow out highlights). In fact you should always be doing this with the RP, even in daylight, to get the cleanest possible shadows and reducing the need to recover shadows. With Highlight Tone Priority turned on, the highlight recovery is very good.

      @@BrettCulverVlogs I hear this claim from R6 users all the time. There's very little difference in ISO noise between all of the R series cameras if you shrink the images down to the 20MP of the R6. The biggest difference between the R6 and say R/RP images shrunk to 20MP is the sharpness of the image. There's relatively little difference in terms of ISO noise, but there's a lot more fine detail in the R6 images which have been softened in the other 2 cameras.

I purchased R10 it suits me as I mainly take photos when out on country rambles and at 72 I don’t want to lug heavy weights around on top of carrying a rucksack full of essentials. I also bought the 100-400 RF zoom to go with it which is my main lens. The kit lens originally was the shorter zoom but I have changed it to the 18-150. I have not used this much however it is noticeable with poorer light the quality or ability to take photos with both lens is lessened compared to previous camera lens’.

      The difference is like day and night, the EF 1.4 has just one single positive: a better bokeh and also at smaller apertures it "looks" better since it got more aperture blades.
      In anything else the RF 1.8 (as well as the EF 1.8 STMs!) is SUPERIOR.... MUCH sharper, barely CA, supports smooth aperture changes for video use....
      And especially the RF version feels higher quality than any of canons autofocus 50mm 1.4/1.8 lenses on EF mount before.

    The 3 way toggle from Off to On to Video is on the Canon 77D and the 80D that I have. So, not a new feature on a DSLR, maybe it is a new one on a mirrorless from Canon.
    After watching several reviews, I am very impressed with R7 as I was considering the original Canon R (priced similar to R7). However, video in 4K is highly cropped on R to 1.8 crop, and no IBIS, so on video solely, most people are much better off with an R7 with its many features than doing video on R or RP. (The FF R6 and R5 may do video better but those bodies are expensive).

    I think Jared, as a sports photographer, puts way more emphasis on shutter speed and how many frames a camera can shoot per second. If you are shooting things like portraits, landscapes, products and still photography, this really is a non issue, yet he almost belabors the fact that the RP doesn't do that well. Also, you have to take into account all of the drawbacks that come with a crop sensor that you don't have to deal with with a full frame lke crop factor. There's no free lunch.

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams Год назад +8

      All of the drawbacks including the *one* thing? Most of the historic drawbacks eg. low light and dynamic range don't apply to this conversation as the APS-C sensors are a generation newer.
      As for shutter speed - most of my photos are taken at 5-6 fps. My M6II can do 14 but only if I have a hummingbird outside my window do I kick it up into a faster mode. The RP however, can't even get out of it's own way. My old M6 Mk I could do 9 fps. Hell, my old M10 with contrast detect AF could do 4.6 fps. The RP is mostly unusable unless the subject isn't moving at all. With tracking AF it's FPS is from the early 2000's. I don't know the technical reason why it's so incredibly slow but I hope it wasn't intentional, it really crippled the camera.

    Great video, but a bit late for me. I had to figure it out by myself :) Anyways, for me, I was set to buy the RP because I don't shoot a lot of sports (occasional MTB races, but they are quite predictable, I could do those with my 5Dc) and I like FF. But then the R7 was announced and I had troubles finding an RP for sale for quite a while. But I want to re-use my EF glass, so then I though about the R7 with Viltrox EF-R mount speed booster adapter. You gain 1 stop light and the crop goes from 1.6 to 1.15. But that adds 250 euro to the price of the R7. So now you get into the R6 territory. So when I saw an R6 in an outlet store for 2200 euro, I got that. 20Mpix is more than enough for me, I was used to 12 from the 5Dc or 18 from the EOS-M (yes, I've got old gear). Very happy with my decision, the extra money I spent is already forgotten.

    I’m not flush with money, and have to make a lot of decisions based on that. So I’ve spent a long time making do with less. But I have been doing this as a profession and as a hobby for closing in on four decades. I shoot mostly in full manual, and always in raw. So at the very least I have to take umbrage with your assertion that the R10 doesn’t leave any room to move upwards, or is only for someone who isn’t looking to improve their photography as a whole. One of the things that is most attractive about it is the level of customization that you can add to it, and the amount of control you can exert over it. The RP has been a great camera for me, with the ability to be very thoughtful in the way that I approach photos and the way that the camera handles. I plan to add an R10 soon, mainly because I like the difference in features for different uses, and I appreciate the similarities between the two cameras in terms of placement of controls and levels of customizability. I’d love an R5 and R7 as my one-two punch. But the RP and R10 will undoubtedly generate very good results for me. As both are marketed as entry level cameras, I feel safe saying that they both leave a lot of room for upward movement, experimentation, and opportunity to gain experience and skill.

The R6 is amazing, dynamic range is great. The RP seemed so slow compared to all of them and the evf would hurt my eyes focusing after a while.

    I enjoyed Your videos, I’m in the process of purchasing a camera for astrophotography. I’m interested in the Full Frame “RP”. But after your video would it be worth my while to purchase the R7. I will also be using it for wildlife photography. What’s your suggestion. Or are there any other cameras you would suggest under $2000.

    FYI, if you use an EF-S lens (on the adapter) with an "R" body the camera will recognize it and automatically adjust so it is in "crop mode" and there is no vignetting due to that. I presume that the same is true if you use an RF-S lens on a full frame "R" body. Of course, if the lens itself is known for vignette (especially zoom lenses at the widest focal length) that will still happen.

      Crop mode on the R6 is a measly 7MPix, so be aware. People are already complaining that 20 MPix is not enough :)
