8:08 it’s funny you say this bc something that happens in the book is that Katniss finds out District 13 captured and was actually torturing her old prep team and when she found them in their cell they were starved and covered in their own filth and she was horrified but Gale defended it and thought it was justified 🤢

The thing that burns me most about this is, from the very beginning (or basically from the end of Catching Fire), Snow was doing the math of his own defeat.
You mentioned his crazy eyes…well, yeah, that’s one way of describing them. To me, it’s the eyes of someone who has long, LONG since recognized the writing on the wall. And the most infuriating part? HE’S AN OLD MAN!
OK OK OK, it’s more complicated than that, but it started with Songbirds and Snakes. His first true defeat was not handed to him by his government, his classmates, or his superiors, it was given to him by his own heart. He loved a woman who was, at first, fascinated by him, then appreciative of him and eventually enamored with…only for her to eventually see the sociopath Snow was, driving her to not only abandon him, but possibly even attempt to kill him. From that moment on, he ceased to permit any loss of control. His rise to the top would be slow but unstoppable; manipulation, political maneuvering, scandals, murder, whatever it took to attain his throne and maintain it forever. Three decades after establishing his dictatorship, he is challenged by a woman not unlike the one who dashed his heart to pieces. As he had done dozens or perhaps hundreds of times before, he tried to control this ‘unstable element’ using fear, coercion and the threat of genocide. It may have worked for a while…but from the moment Katniss fried the inside of the arena in Catching Fire, Snow KNEW the approaching war was unwinnable.
It became a war of attrition. Recapturing the victors, torturing them, brainwashing Peeta, broadcasting his mental anguish throughout Panem…not to mention the stranglehold he tried to maintain by increasing quotas and publicly slaughtering people…it was all meant to harm his enemies (and burn Rome) when he knew he couldn’t win. Having Peeta almost kill Katniss would have been the cherry on top, sure…but it would have been a short victory. NOTHING would have stopped the war with the capital at that point, whether Katniss was dead or alive. It was going to happen.
But he didn’t stop there. In the next film, he turns the capital into a horror show of traps, mutts and killing machines…all to make the eventual fall of the capital into a parade of death. His defeat and capture were assured, yet he made sure to take as many lives as he could.
Why? BECAUSE HE’S AN OLD F*CKING MAN.
That’s why he taunts Katniss about Coin “taking his place”. That’s why he smiles his way through his defeat, instead of begging for mercy or leniency. That’s why he delights in jabbing Katniss over and over again until revealing the truth about Prim to her. That’s why he laughs his way through his execution, even as he is being torn apart…he knew, or at least felt, that his time was over. So what does he have left to lose?
He’s in his 80s at the time of his death. Realistically, he enjoyed more than 40 years of power, control, influence and decadence the likes of which has not been duplicated since Caligula. Bathed in riches, an entire country under his heal, all the intrigue and scandal and opulence he could squeeze out of his subjects…and he isn’t brought to justice until he’s practically scratching on Hell’s back door? Sh*t, I’d have some fun, too! A nice long life with no consequences for my actions and a young, healthy family to carry on my name? I’m surprised he didn’t duct-tape 20 grenades to his balls and pull the pins simultaneously when he was captured; deny the rebels his execution and look like an absolute maniac as he goes out.
That’s what ticks me off. He didn’t actually lose. He won.
In every meaningful sense of the word, he was victorious. Snow lived a long, privileged life, witnessed the death of the woman who swore to kill him and his family (Coin), shredded his enemies up until the DAY before he was captured and left a legacy as brutal as any historical monster. He was never going to win the war, but I don’t think that was the point.
Even in death, Snow lands on top.
Great vid. Pity we need to watch this chuckle-f*ck rip people apart for a little while longer. I wish I could say the end of this series is cathartic, but it mostly just…draining. It’s more fun when seeing you watch it, but still…just a nice, protracted kick in the teeth for all our heroes. >_>
Watching the hunger games movies is so eerie now. Especially with the genocide happening in Palestine. Like 30,000 plus (mostly minors under 18) have died and 1.5 MILLION ppl have been displaced. THERE IS NO JUSTICATION FOR THAT MANY PEOPLE TO DIE. EVER. the Capital and Isreal say the same type of things.
Yeah it is so scary :/ the cycles of violence really continue

Having read the books, Mockingjay - Part 1 is probably my favourite of the movies because it shows the start of the rebellion. I thought it was pretty clear how they would adapt the other three movies, but Part 1 totally surprised me (in a good way!). For the same reason, Part 2 disappointed me because it cut out a lot (Katniss' recovery process, Johanna's PTSD, etc.)
Gale is suffering from PTSD and Survirvor's Guilt. And the fandom give him shit because of a ship. It kind of goes against Suzanne's whole message...
Mockingjay part 1 deserves more love. It shows a different side of the horrors of war. And it is a good movie

I remember when I saw this movie in theaters, the audience all murmured in shock when the screen cut to black after Peeta nearly strangled Katniss to death. It was WILD.
The scene where Finnick and Annie reunite is so emotional, the line from the book always sticks in my mind: “No one seeing them could doubt their love.” 💗
I watched all of em before seeing Songbirds n Snakes and gurl… these films are just so incredible. They took me back. The best part is that I still have physical copies, they don’t make bonus features like they used to! The tribute diaries are everything we’d find on their personal social media nowadays but seeing them on set and goofing off is just as satisfying as their performances. The soundtrack, sets, costuming, everything so immaculate. I wish more series tried to be as authentic to the source material

I love all the movies in the series and I will agree it is the weakest and it also feels slow because there is no hunger games actually taking place but it does build out the world and the revolution a lot and it did give us the iconic song AND the line "It's the thing we love most that destroy us" which was used on the new hunger games movie, when I heard it then it gave me chills! Can't wait for you to watch part 2 ☺
Another parallel between the two films, the track that plays over this film's final scene ("Victory") is reprised in the final scene of Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes ("Snow Lands on Top")

I really do need to read the books I love the action but I miss out on so much lore. I didn't even remember there was a guy who got his tongue cut out until I watched this. Then they just drop it so casually like yhea we got a made up name for it and everything. What?!

FACTS
Reducing oxygen levels to 14% isn’t as drastic as it sounds, especially if u not doing extensive activity. In normal atmosphere oxygen is around 21%. I used to work on a submarine and we typical kept the oxygen at 17% and u couldn’t really tell a difference. And a lot of people would still workout as well.

I feel like I need to give this film another go, I remember not really liking this one when i first saw it a few years ago, but watching your reaction (and also Internet Mom Ash's reaction from a few months back), it's started to convince me that maybe this film cooked a lot more than I previously thought. I'm reminded of the stuff I thought was really awesome when I last watched it, and the political commentary that went over my head last time, and has arguably gained even more relevance in the last few months with what's been happening in Palestine. Maybe I was a little hasty in writing this one off as the "boring" "filler" entry, and I really need to watch this film, and by extension the entire series again

I think it’s way more likely that Maude Ivory is Katniss grandmother though; and the director of the movies as well as Rachel thinks that as well. It makes way more sense.

I never really felt much chemistry between Katniss and Peta..
I can understand that, they’re one of my favourite ships ever but I do think they’re significantly better in the books. Especially since they cut out most of the moments of them properly bonding and also… a lot of Peeta’s personality. So it doesn’t feel the same movie wise
