    Fun fact:
    Lucy Punch, aka Hattie, also played the stepsister in 2000's Cinderella, Into the Woods, and the Cinderella episode of Fairy Tales.
    Even better, it's actually not typecasting. When she was a little girl, when everyone else wanted a princess party, she asked for an ugly stepsister party. This is literally a dream come true for her.

    God this is literally my favorite movie of all time. It’s so unserious and has insane nostalgia for me. I remember I read the book RELIGIOUSLY as a kid (and I still reread it today lol). In the book Ella and Char have so much chemistry and they know each other for years. My favorite scene is when they slide down the stair rails together and he catches her at the bottom and spins her until he gets dizzy 😭. And they fall in love through writing letters to each other even when she was away at finishing school (where she met Areida). Cannot express how much I love the book and the movie ugh.

    I read the Ella Enchanted book before I ever saw the movie, so I felt so betrayed when this movie came out. But now that I'm older, I feel the way you do - I see both the book and the movie as separate entities that are each their own thing and I can enjoy them separately. That being said, I never really noticed how pick-and-choosy the rules of the obedience are in this movie until you pointed it out!
    And I also liked that you mentioned how Ella could technically obey orders by finding loopholes in the wording. She could! And in the book, she absolutely did. For example, in the book she went to finishing school and her music instructor said, "Sing louder, Ella" and Ella "obeyed" by shouting. And then when the instructor told her to sing more quietly, Ella dropped to a whisper. The book makes it very apparent that Ella is rebellious and clever and Hattie realized the need to give Ella very specific instructions or else she'd find a work around.
    Areida is mentioned in the second book because the main character of the second book is Areida's adopted sister. :) It was an OK book. I liked it because it was in the same universe but I've re-read Ella Enchanted probably 15 times by this point and I've only read the sequel twice.

  • @EChacon
    @EChacon 4 месяца назад +34

    If I had a nickel every time Cary Elwes appeared in a Fantasy fairytale comedy, I have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s crazy it happened twice already (e.g. Princess Bride and Ella Enchanted).
    Also it’s so surreal that this movie just came out 20 years ago and it’s still one of my favorite fantasy comedy films thanks to the performances of Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Minnie Driver, Aidan McArdle, Vivica A. Fox, and Eric Idle.

    Those kinds of constraints (where you MUST obey) that you were talking about at 9:56 when two commands seem to have conflicting results can have devastating effects. "2001: A Space Odyssey" has that as a sub-plot as the HAL-9000 computer goes on a killing spree as a solution to dealing with conflicting orders. Obviously way to dark for a movie like this, but I could see a fantasy-horror flick having fun with it, lol ;)

  • @thewannabegamer9
    @thewannabegamer9 4 месяца назад +33

    I agree about your thoughts with the commands, but I’ve always had the head cannon that the gift follows the intentions of the words not necessarily the wording. Like when she was told to take the slippers, the intent was for her to steal them so that is what Ella had to follow.

    I miss Book Ella, who did fight back on her curses, finding alternative ways to interpret them wrong. None of this really happened in the book, and while I do enjoy the movie, like you said, the book in my opinion was so much better explored.

      I’ve actually seen some hate for the movie online, but I imagine they’re probably much older than the intended demographic. I generally see love towards this movie 🥰

    I freakin love this movie ♥️♥️ I love the story and characters and the casting is amazing and it’s so hilarious as well.😆 I felt sorry for Ella the whole movie really I didn’t like Lucinda giving her a crappy gift and I didn’t like people taking advantage of her gift like making her murder Char and making her stop being friends with Areida 😢but great thing she overcame it broke the spell herself 😊 Also her and Char are so adorable together.🥰❤️ it’s another Anne Hathaway classic in my eyes and I’m so happy did a reaction to it and enjoyed Sophia 😁🩷 can’t wait to see what you do next 😊😉👍

    See, there is a simple solution to a lot of Ella’s problems, one her mother could have done as soon as Ella was old enough to understand the true power of her gift/curse. All her mother needed to say on her deathbed was “Ella, as your mother, I command you to obey my final words above all others: I order you to make your own decisions, using your best moral judgement, and live your life, from now until the end of time, as if Lucinda had never given you her gift.”
    I think that covers most of the bases. Yes, we wouldn’t have at least half the film, but the hubris in wishes, blessings, curses and magical laws often have loopholes that can be exploited, if you think about them for long enough. In Aladdin, for example, the Genie says “I can’t kill anybody, can’t make anyone fall in love and I can’t kill anyone…also, no wishing for more wishes.” OK, cool, four definitive rules. He uses his first wish to become a prince, which seems to solve one of his problems without breaking any rules…only, he doesn’t really do anything a prince would do, besides show up, look royal and woo Jasmine. There’s nothing bad or evil about his approach, it’s just not very effective, especially since Jafar recognizes him within a day. Which begs the question, why does he waste so much time? They HAD a connection in the marketplace, she doesn’t seem to care about ‘wealth or rank possessing’…so why not go directly to the source?
    Why not wish for the power to teleport anywhere instantly, and to be able to teleport anything he wishes wherever he wants? He could teleport to Jasmine, temporarily kidnap her (hey, I said direct, not entirely kosher), and bring her back to the oasis where Genie and the gang are hanging out. They’d have all the time in the world to talk, or at least until someone notices she is gone.

    Then…EXPLAIN yourself! “Hey, Jasmine, how’s it going? Don’t worry, I promise to bring you home immediately after I ask you this question. So, look, we hit it off in the marketplace, I could tell…but I’m a peasant and you’re royalty and I don’t want to lie about being something I’m not. I’d really like this to go somewhere, but only if you do, too. I have a Genie here, explains the teleporting, right? He can grant me two more wishes, but the 3rd is already spoken for. If you like me and I like you, I’d be happy to use that 2nd wish to make our dreams come true…so what would that mean for you, for us?”
    Then, discuss! Or if she needs a day to think it over, cool, take her home, in and out of the palace in the blink of an eye, you can reconnect later. You can use that second wish to maximum effect, especially when she realizes Aladdin is NOT dead as Jafar claimed and they have some time to figure out the larger plot. Maybe teleport Jafar into the cave of wonders, just to buy some time and figure out what has been happening with the sultan? Without the Genie, Jafar isn’t much of a threat, especially when his snake-staff is busted. They can use the wish to create their own kingdom together, or to make themselves impervious to other magics, good or bad, or any number of other things that set them up nicely, as an equitable and informed couple.

    Then, FREE THE GENIE! Eternal friendship and gratitude from a being that still retains more power and magic than Jafar could ever attain on his own. You’ve got a semi-phenomenal, nearly-cosmic powerhouse in your corner FOR-EVER…Jafar ain’t got nothing on this group after that.
    Ella would achieve her freedom in much the same way…she must follow her good judgement when it comes to the laws and practices of her kingdom, she can decide for herself if the commands given to her by her step-mother and sisters are worth her time and she can assert her will when appropriate or needed…without ever technically getting rid of the gift! She may not be 100% free, but she would be free-adjacent, certainly free enough to manage her life in such a way as to remove herself from the toxic elements of her siblings. Then it’s happily ever after…with Char probably noticing her much sooner in life thanks to her protesting.
    Great vid! Even as a boy, this film made me laugh and I thought Char and Ella were cute, certainly a lot less frustrating than other rom com’s of the same few years (Bridget Jones Diary, CHRIST…). Elwes can be surprisingly conniving, gotta love Steve Coogan (even as a snake), a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Giant Heidi Klum cameo (don’t care what you say or how much bigger she is than I am, I would shoot my shot, no matter the injury), and I think they kinda underutilized Eric Idol, but hey, we all need a paycheck sometimes, right? What’s next? 😊

    Ella Enchanted was my FAVORITE book growing up (and fostered my now crippling addiction to historical romance novels) but young me couldn't get over how different the movie was. I think I even stopped watching it near the beginning when I first saw it.
    I don't know if having the movie be so divergent is good or not, because the only thing worse might be if it was more faithful to the book but butchered horrendously. At least this way it isn't even a comparison?

    3:08 okay, I know this movie runs on fairytale logic, I get that, you know I'm not supposed to question everything. But...this movie is also satiring fairytales as well, so I must say that plot point does not make sense. Why would her mother tell Ella to keep the "gift" a secret from everyone. Like I know she shouldn't live a life of fear but we clearly see in the rest of the movie, especially when the stepsisters find out, they would immediately take advantage of it. Again, I know it runs on fairytale logic but it's also a satire.
