    I love that Zuko's crew, the 41st division, is the same one he saved in the war room. That's actually a great change to the original. Also, Dallas Liu is kind of nailing it as Zuko.

      As did I when I first saw this a while back because it truly embraces the plot of Zuko’s journey of self-healing when they revealed to us that he wasn’t always like this to begin with in the original. I understand your concerns for this take, Sophia but don’t be too hard since I’m sure the people behind this knew the risks of creating it; given the fact that someone else had try it before and it ultimately backfired. Ergo, I tend to reserve judgement until I see the whole thing to give my opinion more accurately and properly. See you for the last 2 episodes of this season. @@SophiaPhannn

    in the comics that came out after the show, you really come to realise that Ozai was using both of his children for his benefit the entire time and didn't actually care about Azula as much as you'd initially think. this much isn't really too apparent in the original series tho. but it's interesting that they're seemingly bringing elements of that into this adaptation

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  3 месяца назад +35

      Yeah I mean I don’t believe that Ozai truly cared about Azula, but outwardly, he seemed to favor her more

    • @jeanbutinfrench
      @jeanbutinfrench 3 месяца назад +11

      In the original he boasts Azula to fire lord Azulon with pride as a prodigy, the sense that he appealed to her worst instincts and shaped her to be such monster (although she showed a predisposition to it) was a big part of her character, and ironically was a way more sophisticated story than being a victim of an abusive father (which is zuko story), there is so many puzzling changes in this show, like making zuko fight back at the Agni Kai

    • @wendella.4074
      @wendella.4074 3 месяца назад +2

      @@jeanbutinfrenchIn the original I was confused as to why Ozai didn’t just “off” Azula because if my daughter was like that, I wouldn’t have trusted her at all. Too unpredictable. Azula and Ozai needed some humanizing because that would’ve given Aang no doubts into killing the fire nation royally.

    • @everjei2
      @everjei2 3 месяца назад +1

      @@SophiaPhannn Well, actually, if you re-watch the series, it actually only seems that way in Zuko's POV which is mostly where we see Ozai favoring Azula more and perhaps the only time we see Ozai to begin with. But that's not to say that Azula was not truly favored because she was literally giving reasons to be favored in the first place (i.e. She acts in a way that Ozai wants her to act while Zuko has his mother's "heart" which Ozai deems as weak).
      The moment Zuko gives Ozai a reason to favor him, Zuko receives praise and his banishment is lifted, allowing him to sit as the Fire Lord's "right hand" and as the crown prince (i.e. Zuko betrayed Iroh, killed the Avatar, and took over Ba Sing Se).
      This nuance being explored in the live action doesn't make Ozai less evil as you said. It just means that there's a reason why his children turned out a certain way. If anything, it just makes him look more terrible lol.
      And while this linear storytelling on Azula kind of dispels the intriguing pure psycho energy of Azula in season 2 (to which I agree up to a certain extent), I think it can make for an interesting portrayal where we got to see how Azula gets to that psycho calculating persona as we saw in her POV vs Zuko's POV of the perfect Azula always being favored by Ozai.
      If anything, because Azula is drastically arrogant and has the skills to follow through, free of Ozai's unyielding pressure outside of the Fire Nation capital where she was engineered to be the best, her "superior-ness" masks her growing insecurity towards the end because she's quite literally better than anyone else. Like... the moment she was unleashed to the world, Book 2 finale happens, you know what I mean? lol

    I think the fire lord “praising zuko” was simply his attempt to make azula angry. He believes the secret to great fire bending is found through anger while iroh believes it’s found through the peace of one’s own spirit. He’s trying to push azula to fall into her anger against zuko so she can become the heartless monster that he is

  • @AyebaOwl
    @AyebaOwl 3 месяца назад +7

    If the writers are smart, they can use Azula’s underlying insecurity as a base and then develop her into the monster we know and love instead of making her overly sympathetic through and through.

    All the characters just end up kinda bland, they remove the edges from the characters, from Sokka's sexism, Katara's fiery personality, Aang's character turmoil from actually running away in the storm, Ozai's characterization, the only thing more adult in this show compared to the original "Kids show" was the air bender DELETION, the straight up burn execution in the opening scene and Suki being overly thirsty.

    I feel like Zuko fighting back against Ozai ruins the scene. In the animated series, it served to show Ozai's cruelty, and emphasized that he was wrong to burn Zuko when he refused to fight. HERE, they have Zuko almost win. Unlike Azula, Zuko is not a gifted firebender. There was NO REASON he should have even come CLOSE to beating Ozai

    honestly zhao wasnt threatening in the animated series either idk i always saw him as this not very bright soldier delusional about having a chance of being even greater than the fire lord. the thing about azula she IS insecure thats why shes obsessed with being the very best, the fire lord knows thats and thats how he can control her more (he compares her to zuko so she feels that pressure) i get this is very subtle in the first 2 books but in the 3 thats when we see her actual character traits her fears the sadness etc etc until her final existencial crisis

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  3 месяца назад +8

      Oh yeah Zhao wasn’t that threatening to me in the animated series either, but at least he was a decent fighter. Here, he’s kind of just in the background mostly. Maybe I just wanna see more fighting 😂
      And with Azula, yeah we saw glimpses of insecurity from time to time like during that beach episode or towards the end when she has her breakdown so we know it’s there. But showing it so early and so OPENLY like that in the series, it just sets her image as a completely different character where they want us to feel sorry or some sort of sympathy for her from the get-go. It’s kind of like she has imposter syndrome, which the animated Azula would NOT have haha

    Everything they "added" with Azula, Zuko, Iroh and Ozai is wonderful. It adds so much to their relationships and stories.
    Azula will still be ruthless but her downfall will be less sudden and coming out of nowhere.
    Ozai is impeccable and we see him interact with Iroh which was missing in the cartoon

    I think about that last mask line from Iroh as “the way you act when there are no consequences to your identity is who you truly are” so like when Zuko was masked, when he could’ve done anything, he freed the avatar from the fire nation. he chose to do the right thing.

    What they've done to Azula is perfectly simple: they've made her believable.
    In the cartoon she was cartoonishly evil, cartoonishly arrogant, cartoonishly powerful and most of all she was cartoonishly self-unaware.
    Here in the live action series she is behaving precisely how a teenager with a formal upbringing, an abusive father, absent mother, raised to be snobbish and brutal, with a high status in an archaic nation that is at war with almost everyone else, would be expected to behave: obsessed with proving her worth, resenting everyone expressing even the tiniest lack of faith in her, driven to perfection, and worst of all: wrestling with her conflicting feelings of cruelty and kindness. On the one hand she misses Zuko, on the other hand she detests him because despite his absence and her work for Ozai, she is not in line to be Firelord and she has spent most of her life only ever being in the fire nation copped up and with no-one and nothing but her wavering friends to save her from her own worst instincts.
    If it were me, I'd have Azula and Aang get together and have him show her that she can do better than prove herself to an abusive father and that she doesn't need to brutalize others just to confirm her greatness.
    The irony of Avatar is that Team Avatar and the Royal family are two sides of the same coin: Team Avatar is on a mission to learn confidence, The Royal family are on a self-destructive road which they need humility to get off.

    I'm sad we don't see Hei Bai turn back into cute panda spirit and be healed (or at least calm down so no longer grabbing people into the spirit world (to then be eaten by Koh?? like they're working together? or something??))
    Also the monologue about the mask being who you really are by Iroh at the end of the episode had me go "hello Batman?" when I first saw it because that feels almost exactly like some of the "the mask of Batman is the real person, and Bruce Wayne is the act" monologues in batman movies, hah!
    I just want to know how June got to Crescent Island and back.
    The additional Iroh and Zuko backstory scenes and interactions, and the crew being the soldiers Zuko didn't want sacrificed, are basically the only things I really like changed in the live action. I'm in the same boat as you, I'm rather neutral, don't hate or love it, and would rather watch the original animated show.
    It has been interesting seeing how they combine episodes together like Omashu getting mushed in with Jet, the secret tunnels, and engineer guy I am blanking on, and how they're changing the story to still get Aang to Important Places. Like Aang has to go to Crescent Island to meet Roku to save his friends from the spirit world, and Aang has to get to the Northern Water Tribe because Kyoshi warned him rather than "hey you need to learn water bending"
    Zuko's agni kai with Zhao getting turned sort of turned into his agni kai with his father is weird. It was way more horrific for Zuko to not fight at all. I also was sort of bothered that there wasn't a huge crowd for it, whereas in the animated show it was a Huge Spectacle. Iroh said Ozai liked having an audience yet there was like 10 people watching the agni kai? Ran out of their 'crowd extras' budget I guess!
    Also with the way they're writing Azula I feel like they're aiming for "Azula kills Ozai herself" because she gets sick of his nonsense. You nailed it on the head, I miss her arrogance. She demanded impossible perfection from herself, and her dad is awful, but it wasn't... whatever this is.
    ALSO no episode of Sokka and Katara running into Bato and getting news of their dad and the other southern water tribe warriors and doing the ice dodging trials with him :( guess Sokka did that already. When he was like, 11 or 12? Has this version said when their dad left? They didn't make Sokka look younger in that flashback, but Katara was.
    I had way more thoughts than I realized when I started this comment, hah. Oops.

    It feels to me that Ozai isn't so much praising Zuko, but more manipulating Azula into becoming more powerful BY praising Zuko. He knows Azula is better than Zuko, but she's not at her best yet. Remember, this is pre-season 2 Azula. This is how she becomes that, and arrogance is born from insecurity. It might work for some, and not for others, which is fine. Personally, I didn't mind it.

    5:10 With regards to Azula, I suspect what the creators are aiming for is to highlight the tragedy of her character. By humanising her and having her be as much a pawn as Zuko in Ozai's games, they are showing that they both share the same potential; hence the tragedy given how different their ultimate fates are, in no small part due to Zuko having a positive parental figure in Iroh while Azula did not.

      It lacked the spirit of the original, but it was a fun first time watch

    Why do people keep assuming that introducing Wan Shi Tong in Season 1 mean he's not going to come back in Season 2? Wouldn't the opposite make more sense?

    I don't necessarily think that they changed Azula. I still remeber the animated series, when in one of her first scenes or probably the first one, she's lightning bending on the boat and she literally says "good is not perfect, is not enough" or something like that, she was constantly puttin pressure over her to get to the perfection, which is kinda what Azula is doing in the live action too no? She feels strong and superior, but she is still constantly searching for that perfection. We don't know very much about Azula psyche in the cartoon. But I agree that this is probably a before-version of the azula we saw for the first time in the cartoon? Maybe

    It's like they thought "the 2010 movie gave us nothing with the interactions between Zuko and Aang after the Blue Spirit rescue so let's give them more!" I can respect that.
    Personally I really like the way Zhao is portrayed. He may not be as intimidating as cartoon Zhao but I still think he gives a decent portrayal.
    I also don't mind them humanizing Ozai a bit cause after hearing some people give their take on it, I do think it kinda makes sense to give him some humanizing traits since it's understandable that making him as sadistic and evil as he was in the cartoon might not work as well in live action. Maybe that's just me who's always been a fan of villains with hints of morals. I don't know, it just always made them more interesting to me. Don't get me wrong, I do not want Ozai to redeem and become good. I just think it makes him kinda interesting to give him some hints of morality.

      You bitches are the reason why villains can't be villains anymore in media. Let him be ruthless and evil so we can hate him. This is poor writing and not all villains deserve redemption. Would you redeem Hitler you little hoe?

    I think Azula needs to be a little less cartoonishly “psychotic” because displaying mental health issues as insane = evil isn’t quite as helpful of a perspective (especially in a live action). At least, that’s what I hope. We really didn’t see her in the 1st season, so it’s kinda conjecture. I kinda liked Ozai playing off his children’s insecurities & whatnot, as he as a social Darwinist sort of viewpoint & is working off Firebenders being the best. But they should also be the best, & causing his children to compete is how they’ll be better.

    Pretty obvious that the fire lord is just revving up Azula to be a monster by pitting Zuko against her. Isn't it obvious?

    Personally I like humanizing Azula and giving depth to Ozai, it's evil caricature villains that bore me.

    Quick note: "psychotic" does not mean violent or anything similar. It describes people who experience psychosis, which is a mental disorder that messes with someone's perception of reality.

    They really sidelined Avatar Roku.😂
    Why? Because he's a man. And we're only allowed to show powerful women in 2024. Didn't you think it was weird they introduced Kyoshi first, plus have her in the intro, plus gave her an entire action scene centered on just her🙂
