    In the book when Katniss makes that speech in 11, she really didn’t think about how her words would be perceived until they all raised their 3 fingers and she immediately panicked. She actually wasn’t going to say anything but knew if Rue won, she would honour Katniss.

    Hey Sophia. One thing I've never heard anyone discuss is the possibility for Prim experiencing guilt for being the one who was protected and spared the Games. She is portrayed as being more like her mother who has a talent for medicine as well as being generally caring herself but I think part of her choice could have been wanting to make a difference and prove she was worth her sister's horrific emotional scars.

    this text post by danyllura on tumblr made me rethink katniss and her feelings for peeta:
    "I love that in Catching fire Katniss comes to the conclusion the other tributes are trying to keep Peeta alive because they must see how amazingly perfectly wonderful he is. When in actuality that's just her having a crush and everyone else recognizing that if Peeta gets hurt Katniss will go fully feral and unhinged and probably try to kill everyone and then herself."
    maybe op was describing their dynamic in the books (i haven't read them yet) but this interpretation is sooo good honestly, katniss is such an interesting character and i love the idea that her perspective of peeta being so worthy of protection isn't just because he saved her in the games and that he's kind and considerate of her but bc she has feelings for him that she doesn't know how to act on

    I love the character of Katniss, It is so rare to see a hero (or even maybe even an anti-hero) frustrated her allies almost as much as her enemies. Both sides are trying to use her, but she just wants to do what she thinks is right, and to do it her own way, Your review really captured that perfectly! 😇

Peeta was always the best because he saw the bigger picture wanting what was best for everyone. Unlike Gale, he put Katniss first despite his own pain and frustrations. Okay, about districts 1, 2 and 4.
    They are career districts (and yes, that included Finnick and Mags) which means that the propaganda snow spreads around there is a lot more intense and stringent. They are only treated marginally better than the other districts, and are brainwashed into believing that the games will "save" them. Outlying districts (12, 11, 10, and 5) are treated the worst, with high levels of starvation and general apathy, BUT they are only slightly worse off then 1 2 and 4.
    Unlike in 12, 11, 10 and 5, districts 1 2 4 and 8 are required to handle heavy weaponry since young, which gives them advantage which lead to being career districts.
    I find a lot of people forget Cato mourning clove and Marvel trying to avenge Glimmer by attempting to kill Katniss. Even after everything, the careers are still children.
    Cato cries in the last few moments of the games, only wanting to go home and knowing he can't. For the whole of the last week, he knows he's done for, he knows the focus is on the star crossed lovers and all he wanted was to go home and bring the "glory" back to district 2.
    You can see with Cashmere and Gloss, Brutius and Enobarria, Finnick and Mags, that despite being careers, they still do their best to stop the games because they are also traumatised by them.
    A reminder that snow, after Katnisses actions, kills ALL THE VICTORS not taken from the arena aside from Annie (who's used against finnick) and Palor (who escaped on her own in District 8)
    Anyway, District 1 is one of the first to join the rebels when 13 asks. They were as tired of the system as everyone else. The only reason District 2 hangs on is because most peacekeepers are trained there, which means a lot of families has a person they will lose or get killed if they speak out.

  • @belzvaldez19
    @belzvaldez19 9 месяцев назад +9

    The thing about the capitol worrying about the baby but not caring about the tribute children is hypocritical and screwed up, but we even have an answer to that with Effie's development. Remember that the Capitol and the professional Districts live in a bubble, they do not know anything about what happens in other districts (even during the revolution, they only find out about the real situation until the rebels reach the capitol) and they also live within a culture which teaches them that being a tribute is the greatest honor you can have, there have been harvests where the volunteers fought to be the chosen tribute, and they believe that it is like this in all of Panem, that is why in THG1 we see Effie so enthusiastic. She does not see how horrible it is to be a tribute because all her life she has seen the games as something honorable and she only realizes the reality when she lives with people outside that privileged bubble and realizes that what for her people was something aspirational and entertaining, it has always been a way of torturing citizens. That's why the baby thing also bothers them, for them the fact that Katniss was a tribute is something she "chose", while the baby didn't... fucked up and has no excuse, but you come to understand it from that WEIRD point of view.

  • @nailinthefashion
    @nailinthefashion 9 месяцев назад +16

    Have you looked up the tribute diaries from the first one? I get chills from the nostalgia haha. They had handheld cameras instead of using their phones for the most part cuz they were so low quality.
    This is one of the best movies ever, not just YA adaptation but the story is diverse and inclusive, full of action and romakce and political drama, it's a miracle of a series to me.
    RIP Hoffman. I'll never forget his conversations with Snow. Thats how to manipulate a powerful, narcissistic man into doing what you want while making him think he has a choice!

  • @sere_amarilla
    @sere_amarilla 9 месяцев назад +28

    I love Katniss as a main character because her prime motivation is not exactly about doing wrong or right, but about protecting the ones she loves the most. It’s like her character wasn’t build to have the desires and purposes of the “chosen one” archetype, but more about the simple person in an apocalyptic situation surviving the day by day and supporting their family. She got to be the centered of attention out her personal motivations (her love for her family and friends), but she kept those as her core even when everyone wanted her at the spotlight fighting for revolutionary causes (propaganda included, from both sides). She has the essence of a protagonist without relying on the image of the immaculate hero.

    1. I believe Cashmere and Gloss both being in their original games was not bad luck but they both volunteered in back to back years...so it would be a family legacy I guess.
    2. I really believe Katniss did not love Peeta (movies) until after the victory Tour. I also do believe she really did have genuine feelings for Gale that went unexpressed before she went into the Games but was not pushed passed what she was ready for when she came back from the games
    3. Catching Fire Peeta is just 😫😍🫠
    His looks, his sarcasm, kindness, goodness, empathy, selflessness, people skills, intelligence, good instincts, love, protectiveness...if Katniss didnt want him I would have volunteered as tribute quickly and willingly 😂😂

    One thing they had no excuse cutting out was Peeta's missing leg. Mags would have never had to sacrifice herself if his leg wasn't half metal. It's the only reason the fog even touched him bc he still couldn't keep up on it. It's also a reminder of Peeta's suffering. The movies are always focused on Katniss and I get it but we often forget about Peeta. Peeta was brainwashed but a lot of people ignore it just because he becomes semi normal again. But his leg is a huge symbol that Peeta also lives with that trauma every single day.

    Honestly, I thought she killed more people in the first film, but CAUSING or ALLOWING the death of other's might not count, I suppose. But your comment holds two-fold for the promise of the last 2 films...
    At the end of the first film, Katniss gets a taste of the idea that, just like the ride on the train, the hungers games NEVER end for the tributes, even if you "win"...so she killed to survive.
    At the end of Catching Fire, Katniss realizes that no one in Panem is safe from the Capital or Snow, no matter how much she smiles or how well she "plays the game"...and from the look on her face, that awesome, seething rage, we can tell that Katniss has decided she will kill to WIN.
    Everyone has a limit...a breaking point or threshold, the moment at which our very homeostasis is challenged so thoroughly that we make a decision, mental or biological, to push back.
    But people can put up with a LOT, if they think things will get better...or at least, not worse. In these films, especially in Catching Fire, the desire to exist within the system, to simply 'make our way' without making waves, is powerful within the characters. "Let me live in peace...I killed for your entertainment, now leave me be". Had Snow not challenged that, had he simply continued to grind Katniss and Peeta into the dirt with the endless parading and touring and lip-service, they, too, may have eventually adopted the complacency and beleaguered gratitude that the other victors adopted after years of similar servitude. "Even the strongest cannot stand against the might of the capital", a very apropos statement; even the strongest rocks will, eventually, be worn away by wind and water, given enough time and pressure.
    But Snow was as he has always been: a damaged, petulant man-child, convinced of his own socio-economic dominance over Panem, without the patience or foresight to see it through. Swatting flies with SCUD missiles, as it were. Rather than let the 'stone' of these new victors be ground-down through pressure and time, he decided to hit it with a hammer...and then he's shocked and shaken when the hammer bounces back and hits him in the face.
    Many will argue that revolution within Panem was inevitable and perhaps they are right, but really, the 'spark that lit the revolution' could just as easily have come from the hammer that Snow dropped on the victors. And yeah, Plutarch may have concocted the idea, but Snow ate it up like a plate of macaroons. How glorious and final it must have looked to him, the idea of extinguishing all the remaining victors (save one) in a single, fell swoop, priming Panem for another 25 years or more of the same vicious cycle, with 600 brand-new tributes to reap and perform and struggle and kill and parade and whore-out and crush over the next quarter century. It must have felt like Christmas morning...until Katniss lit his world on fire.
    Everyone has a limit. One could argue that Snow reached his limit when he couldn't see the folly of his own egomaniacal need to push the districts further and further to the edge.
    Katniss reached her limit, I think, when she realized that they was no more "safety", no more "haven" or "home", no more "hope" to be had, for her or her loved ones, as long as she played the game. It had literally gone up in smoke by the time she regained consciousness. That look she gives the camera at the end of Catching Fire practically SCREAMS her new frame of mind, even if she doesn't quite know it yet: "No more games...no more trains...no more smiling for the camera. I didn't want a war...but the alternative is no better. If WE Burn, YOU Burn With Us."
    Such a cool film. Flawed, but very effective in stoking the flames of what comes next. And your review of it was very energetic and engaging. So glad I'm not the only one who went "Ah, no, come on, no bleeding Hemsworth's on the dining table...gross." when I first saw this. 😛Great Vid!

I had re-read the book in time to see it on the big screen, and went by myself so no one would annoy me or talk to me or want snacks or whatever. Bliss. And then.... this perfection unfolded. Though I wanted the scenes of Haymitch, Peeta & Katniss training in 12, and the rooftop picnic, I understand why they were cut. Best. Adaptation. Ever. Even the actor who plays Finnick (who I didn't think was hot enough when I saw trailers) just knocked it out of the park. Sheer perfection. I sat there in awe, tears streaming down my face at the end, knowing I would never see another adaptation so close to the source material in my life.

    15:00 And you're absolutely right. Snow knows that changing the quarter quell to have all victors isn't the best move long term. He's scrambling to get rid of Katniss and is slipping up on details. The districts WOULD feel like it's unfair and it would cause more unrest, but because the capitol people are only seeing it as a 'never before done' twist for their entertainment, there's a chance that this unrest could be overshadowed by the capitol's excitement. It's a big risk, but it could work out in Snow's favor. The only thing he would have to say is that all the prompts were done years in advance. Capitol citizens would also use that as their argument, but realistically, they're so separated from the districts that the argument would never even take place.

    One thing I like about this story is the portrayal of Effie as in the wrong but not malicious.
    She is part of the whole Hunger Games thing, but she grows to care about Katniss and Peeta after getting to know them, effectively bursting the bubble or sheltered privilege she always lived in.
    In an increasingly polarized world where everything is always framed as black or white, it is good to remember that malice should be distinguished from ignorance.

      He struck her with the whip once I believe. She had a massive mark on her face and Haymich scolded him because she would look all beaten up in the big propaganda wedding.

    My understanding after reading the books is that the love triangle was never really a thing. Before the games people thought Katniss and Gale would end up together simply because they were always together which makes sense however it honestly never felt like Katniss had the time to see Gale that way because she was too busy trying to keep her family alive; take care of her sister and her mom. Then after the games her and Peeta were forever bonded due to what they went through in the games and something like a ftiendship was built. I can't remember much else because its been awhile since I've read the books but I do think that from henceforth there was no one else for Katniss because she finally saw Peeta well more than saw him, she was able to interact with and get to truly know him. Yeah the circumstances weren't great that lead them to finally finally get the nerve to become friends but they were gonna be end game no matter what because Katniss couldn't be with anyone else because no one else would ever understand what she'd been through or understand her. Gale never stood a chance regardless so yeah. Love these movies though and I love Josh as Peeta.

    I wanna know how Katniss learned the what I call the “Lucy Gray” bow because in the books they made the 10th hunger games disappear so how would she know anything about Lucy or the games. I have so many questions lol

    Katniss kills Marvel and Cato with arrows, kills Gimmer (and the girl from 4 in the books) with trackerjackers, and partially is the reason the boy from district 3 was killed by Cato for setting off the trap that he did too well

    Happy new year Sophia. Im not the biggest hunger games fan but this movie and the next really sold me on what being a figure head means everyone needs you but your opinions don't matter. also if its not to much trouble could you explain the orange peel thing.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  9 месяцев назад +4

      The orange peel theory is basically saying that doing small acts of kindness is a way of showing love and support in a relationship. Because peeling oranges is a small and tedious task that I don’t think many people enjoy, but having someone peel an orange for you shows their willingness to support you in small ways-especially if they do it without you asking. It shows that they’re considerate and thinking of you even in the everyday mundane tasks.
      I think this is just a little TikTok thing, but I thought it was cute and applicable to Peeta and Katniss 🥹

    remember everyone, while you guys have a fun, cozy movie to watch. we are living the reality of this movie everyday. except there are no fancy clothes, extravagant makeup, no capital. but there's you instead. i know yall watch this and sympathize with the districts. But y'all are more like the capital... the way you all are silent about the cruel genocide the people of Palestine are going through. the writer of this book came up with its story while watching the violent invasion of Iraq. she was inspired by your indifference to thousands of iraqi people being unjustifiably killed and tortured. by not protesting the usage of your tax dollars, by your silence, you are the people of the capital.

    I know this is sooo random, but in some of your videos, you've used Jesus' name as a curse word. I know you're not meaning to ❤, but it's offensive. No one takes Muhammad or Buddha's name in vain. Also, we are literally living in the last days. Everything that's going on in the world right now points to Jesus coming back very soon (wars, weather, AI, new world order, cashless society, rapture dreams). I'd encourage you to look into Biblical prophesy and consider repenting for any sins in your life and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. He's coming back for His ppl, and after that happens, it's literally going to be hell on earth for those left behind. I've become such a fan of your channel and truly don't want you left here for what's coming.
