    We got an Atari in 1982 or so and it was a huge shock, my (single) mom had told us that we were too poor to get one, so opening one on Xmas morning was spectacular. I think we only had Combat on the day, but that was enough, it was an awesome 2 player game! I loved the tanks in the maze. Later we got Pacman, Defender and Space Invaders and that was it, I was living the dream of having my own video arcade (when my mom didn't want to watch her soap operas of course). There was always that one kid who used to chew the rubber on their Atari joystick and it would be covered in teeth marks, I remember that as well.

      Yeah he definitely does deserve more subs. 3 years after you posted your message, he has nearly 37k..but that isn't enough. I really think that young people should be forced to watch his videos, as they could learn a lot from them. What I mean by that, is how Paul is appreciative of things....things that kids these days seem to just take for granted. There is also a very strong family vibe to his videos..and we all know that the concept of a normal, loving family is pretty much dead in today's society.

    I might have commented this before, but in 2000, someone broke into my home. The only things the took were my Atari 2600, the around 40 games I had for it, my collecovision and all those games, and my intellivision, that had a voice module and all the games. The burglar busted down my entire back door and found my consoles and games in my top closet shelf. He didn't take my DVD player, or computer. I still wonder to this day, who burglarizes homes looking for classic gaming consoles?

    Paul, in 1988, I got myself the Platinum Series B.C. Rich Warlock !!! It was the biggest thing I had ever bought besides my car (1978 Monte Carlo). I loved it even though it wouldn't stay in tune. I played it all the way up until 1996.

    The first home video game I ever played was Pong on my cousin's ColecoVision. It wasn't until years later that my brother got a Nintendo system and we played Legend of Zelda and Mario Brothers constantly.
    Before we had our own VCR, my brother would rent one for the weekend at our local Mom & Pop shop. It was humongous and weighed a tonne. I still remember what movies he rented the first time; _Parasite_ with Demi Moore and _Deathstalker_ with Barbi Benton.
    One big family gift we got one year was a cool air hockey game which we played constantly until one of my brothers fell on it and cracked the "ice" completely across, putting an end to our fun.

    I had the exact same model VCR! I got it for my 8th grade graduation present in 1982! It was a revelation to be able to record things directly from the TV! It was a beast, in all of its top-loading, fancy-wood-paneled, glory!

      It was my pride and joy for at least 5 years. When it died, I opened it up, messed around with the giant circuits within, and somehow made it work for another 4 years. And I also taped You Might Think with the missing effects at the end. My tape is long gone, but I remembered that all these years. Then I saw yours! You bring back the mad memories, Paul, and your music is so much fun! Run for President already!

    Wow! All those modern things! You were pretty lucky! My dad wouldnt buy any of that stuff and we never had cable tv. My brother lived down the road and he had to have all the latest technology including a Bata machine. He said the VHS was not going to ever become popular. Boy was he wrong! He also invested in the first ever Video game system. Commander wasvmy favorite. My wifes cousin gave me the one she grew up with. She was going to sell it at a yard sale. I snapped it up. I have all the original games and even found some extra controllers for it. Unfortunately the original box and manuals are long gone. Have a Merry Christmas and looking forward to the new year with your video's.

    We never got family gifts for Christmas. My bigger brother and I were too far apart in years for any kind of real agreement. We did however love playing Nintendo together, though we never go my NES for Christmas. That was a birthday gift. Glad you got that camera because, as you have made a video about before, it changed everything.

    I fondly remember our first VCR -- a General Electric VHS player. The format war between VHS and Beta was still raging at the time, and luckily, the one we picked won out. We could never figure out how to set the time on the digital clock display, and it would always flash "Sun 12:00". We never had the Atari or Commodore 64 though. We had the Odyssey 2 and the Colecovision Adam. The Adam had those cassette tape drives instead of floppy disks, and they were notorious for not working properly. Plus, if you left a tape in the drive when you powered up, you'd get a power surge that would wipe out anything you stored on the tape, which sucked royally. The cartridge games were cool, and it was backwards compatible so it could play the old Coleco games too. Also, I didn't know this at the time, but there was this device on the black market you could plug into the side of the Adam's CPU so it could play all the old Atari 2600 and 5200 games. My favorite Adam games were Pitfall, Carnival, Mr. Do, Centipede, Gorf and Buck Rogers.

    Hi Paul, I very rarely comment on videos but this is one instance where I have to... I have to tell you, you have one of the best & most interesting channels on RUclips. I'm subscribed to approximately over 300 channels but out of all of those...you are in my top 3. I'm personally big on the documentation of ones life, I've done it myself as far back when I was 12...but even before then at a younger age, I always took a liking to the idea of "time capsuling" my life events. I'm 28 now. Wish I would have done it to the degree you did and kept it as a regular commitment as it's an amazing thing to look back on fond & great memories from the past, which I see you have a lot of. Keep up the awesome work, all those years of messing around with that video camera, audio recorder & all the material possessions you have kept with you throughout your life, has made for an incredible time capsule for many future generations to enjoy. Thank you, Mr. Original Vlogger.

      I believe it was entirely my dad who made those decisions, Larry. I think he must have thought he was buying "safe" games that we could all play with no violence or anything. Also, he liked sports, which I never liked. I think he might have been disappointed that I didn't get into baseball or anything.
      There were so many strange Commodore 64 games and that was all we seemed to get. I want to do a video about some of them soon. This was the first one that we got when we bought the computer: ruclips.net/video/YiiLIDlZNww/видео.html

    • @hoagie1978
      @hoagie1978 7 лет назад +2

      I think because VHS marketed their machines to be more affordable and their tape format allowed more recording time per cassette. Even if slower speeds degraded the picture, on old TV's back then, it didn't make that noticeable of a difference to most people.

    • @halfnhalfwithsage3416
      @halfnhalfwithsage3416 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah, I figured it was probably a price issue. And like you said, most people probably didn't even notice a difference. But I thought Beta was better in general.

    Love your channel! I found it by researching researching Sony Handycam bloggers. I run a retro gaming channel and wanted to use one for my own vblogs (I only do 1 or so a month). If you still like to dig out the atari, you can buy a thing called a "Harmony" cart. It allows you to put games on micro sd and play them on the real hardware! People are still developing atari games too for fun, so you can add those to the cart as well.

    I think that I also got a Atari 2600 in that year as well, the games I got was Combat, E.T. The Video Game, and Pitfall. We never had a Nintendo but I would sometimes play it at my cousins house. I lost interest in playing the Atari 2600 and couldn't make sense out of E.T. What was your favorite game on the Combat tape mine was Tanks where the ammo would bounce off of the wall.

      We got ET also, that came out the next year 1982. Actually, my sister got it. It was specifically hers and not a family gift. But she let me play it. I think my favorite on Combat was the biplanes. I liked that you could switch direction really fast and shoot back.

    Fantastic video! Before you got cable television, did you get either WTRF or WTOV on your TV besides the Pittsburgh stations?

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  7 лет назад +1

      Yes! I watched channel 7 and 9 all the time. Sometimes I'd watch a show on our main affiliate channel, then I could turn to one of those and catch a different episode of the same show right after!

      I got cable TV in the late '90s. Before that, I would watch WTOV and the local Pittsburgh stations regularly.

    Paul, what do you think of the Atari flashback systems? Have you gotten one?

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  7 лет назад

      I have 2 of those. The first one and the 2+. I wanted the 2+ because it has some unreleased games and home brew games on it. Even though I got it 2 years ago, I still have not played it. I just don't get much free time between working and RUclips, my music career and household upkeep. All I do is work!

    Man It would have been awsome to grow up in 80s back when the 2600 was a new system. Sure it was a pricey gift with a price tag of 200 bucks or $778 injusted for inflation,But after the game crash of 83 the price dropped

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  7 лет назад

      The tripod is still at my mom's house. My son started using it eventually and now I think one of the legs on it is messed up. She still has the Mad Magazine board game over there as well. I bought my own copy of it last year...it's in one of my thrift store haul videos.

    Great video Paul. I have one question to ask.
    Did you ever got severely punished after getting caught by your parents for finding the Atari 2600 console before everyone woke up, or did you just get scolded by them?

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  5 лет назад

      Just scolded. I was never "severely punished" that I can remember, ever.

    Basically your 1984 video camera is being used right up until 1991 and I assumed that the one of your home video from 1991 has a better quality to it.

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  3 года назад

      We used the 1984 camera up until 1986. That's when we got a better camera, there's a video of how the first 1986 one we got broke and we had to return it: ruclips.net/video/QFosvGMwF9o/видео.html

    Paul I believe you will gain more fans if you display your content in 720 or 1080. I clicked on your video and saw the 4:3 ratio and the name Original Vlogger and thought someone had ripped "Weird Paul's" original content. Come to find out, it's your channel. Excessive use of the vhs style conveys that the content is dated and irrelevant to most users, so they click away after 6 seconds. I know why you're doing the VHS look (love it), but I think it's keeping your numbers down if the entire video runs with the VHS effect applied. At least intro your videos with good HD 16:9, then cut back and forth from 4:3 to 16:9 throughout. I like your channel a lot. May the force be with you.

    • @weirdpaulp
      @weirdpaulp  7 лет назад

      There's no VHS effect. This is all filmed on VHS tape, as you will soon find out: ruclips.net/video/sv6FUE6eXpU/видео.html

    I remember wanting an Atari 2600 so bad; I even memorized the commercial & sang the song to try to convince my parents! ruclips.net/video/913xrM9FYpI/видео.html We never did get a 2600, instead we got an Atari 800XL Computer with Pac-Man (and Popeye I think)we also had an Atari 5200 later on (although I don't remember it)I only know this because there were 5200 carts in my room, so we must have owned it! I guess it was just as disappointing back then as it is now for me not to remember it!
