Who'da thunk someone's glasses history could be so engaging! I was riveted! I too had the "can't see the blackboard" problem and was marched off to the optician. It was at a time when the UK's free NHS frames had become so ironically cool (think Jarvis Cocker) that people were getting them even if they didn't need them, so they changed the frames to something totally dorky looking, which I ended up getting :( In 1989 I joined a thrash metal band and switched to contacts so that I could bang my head on stage in confidence. For about 15 years after that I wore disposable contacts that my 1990 optician told me I could sleep in for a week. I never had my eyes tested during that whole time and would sleep in them after heavy party sessions and suchlike. When eventually I got my eyes tested they said "you SLEEP in those? My god your eyes are screwed! They don't advise doing that any more!" Luckily my eyes had escaped unscathed.
It's funny because a few years ago I switched from contacts to glasses for the same reason you switched from glasses to contacts - to cheer myself up with a change (and also because I got bored of taking them in and out). I've worn specs ever since, although every now and then I will slip in some contacts for a "treat" because they make everything look huge and awesome :)
Wow sleeping in them! That I have never heard of. I fell asleep for a little while once with them in and they were a bitch to get out!! Billy Idol once fell asleep with his in and they fused to his eyeballs and he had to have emergency surgery!
I once put mine in straight from the disinfecting solution, forgetting to do the neutralizing solution first. It was like putting a hot coal in my eye and I took me an hour to peel it off. My eye was red raw for a week. My other nightmare (and it's only happened once) is having it slip around your eyeball out of view. That is one scary experience.

Well, I can tell you that when I was a kid, I almost always wore white underwear. I only had one pair of underwear that wasn't white back around then and it was from my Spiderman Underoos.

Glasses rock!! From Holly to Costello to Petroskey! Glasses rock! Nice one 4 eyes! ;) I just had a weird insight. I hardly ever have my pic taken or anything like that since I was a kid. I was thinking when I pass on I will be a ghost faster than most because I just have not documented my life but thank f**k you & your family will never have that problem mate. Weird Paul, for all intents and purposes I shouldn't give a rip about your vintage glasses, but somehow you make me curious about them.

One sees far away and the other sees close-up.
My parents got me a pair of glasses when I was twelve.
I only wore them one day.
They were making my eyes dependent on them.
Wow, I didn't realize that it was common to have both eyes see so differently.

Your optometrist said you were in a small percentage? Almost everyone around 40 years old starts to lose the ability to see up close! And with out a progressive or bifocal, wearing glasses increases the need for these lens additions. What you are doing with one contact lens is called mono vision! If you wish to wear glasses again all you need is progressives or bifocals Paul! Love your channel! Makes me wish I had held on to the things of my past!
Bryan Johnson I agree with you. I think Paul needs to go to a different Optometrist. That is crazy that the Optometrist is having him wear one contact, instead of two. Paul, please get a second opinion. You shouldn't have to see the world in Monovision.
Yeah but I have not lost the ability to see close up, that's the thing. I can see fine close up right now while I'm typing this and I'm not wearing contacts or glasses. What I lost is the ability to see close up while WEARING my glasses or contacts (which I wear to see far away). Glad you enjoy my channel, Bryan!
He was my second opinion actually! The first doctor gave me two contacts and in order to see close up, I'd have to put a pair of glasses on TOP of the contacts! Ridiculous and not only that, once I put those on, I couldn't see far away anymore! Which made it impossible to do things like watch a movie on TV while answering RUclips comments! The one contact thing is working out the best for me right now. I hope one day I'll have the money for Lasik surgery!
That is a very common occurrence nearsighted Myopes as they age need bifocals to see up close while wearing the their glasses. I too can see perfect up close while not wearing my glasses. But as soon as I put them on I can't see up close anymore! Put a progressive lens in your glasses and all will be fixed! I am a master optician with 21 years in the industry this happens all the time! You will never be able to see as well as you did up close while wearing either 2 contacts for distance or glasses with out an addition of multi focal contacts or bifocals!

I like that idea. I don't have any photos or videos of me dressed up for trick or treating though, so that is a big problem. A better idea might be for Mom and Me to look at all the old costumes she saved from the 70s and 80s.

I have. I've also thought about how I can not afford it! If/when I become rich, it's one of the first things I am going to do!
hahaha. This is funny and tragic at the same time. My life was around my glasses to. Glasses sucks! I still have some of the old glasses around and some in pieces. Now I am almost wit 50 years old and with a dificult to see near :-( And I can't adapt to bifocal glasses :-(

I have the problem where one of my eyes is 20/40 and the other is 20/20 so I need to wear glasses or else I just have bad migraines.
