    ‘We have to decide when to go in the city’ more truer now than ever before. I live near Chicago so I feel that statement. I use to fish, hunt all over Illinois and Indiana. Work/ career took over but watching your vids just might inspire me to get back out when the weather turns. I’ll be turning 50 this year, just might be the right time to reconnect with the great outdoors.

    • @EvenDarker

      Nice and young!
      The city has things which I like. Eating out at restaurants, going to the mall, movies, concerts etc. But when everything shut down I didn't complain, I just leveled up my hiking.
      It's easy to wish things were different or the old way. But I want to face the fact that THIS is what we have. And I make decisions based on the way things are, not the way I wish things could be.
      It's a brave new chapter.

    I would imagine a volcano would be your best chance at finding your way into the extreme under deep of the Earth. An adventure on that scale when finding the entrance to that would be a many day experience. I would imagine if you find the right opening you could spend a full week or more in such depths.
    What is the deepest you have gone? And have you found any hints to such entrances to the vast under dark?
    The caves under the mountain have always been something of a fantasy of mine. As some volcano's are connected to the deepest parts of our Earth. All of them were at one point, and still are today, I am positive of this.
    Very few are brave enough to find this knowledge in our modern age. Much of the past research has been lost, or taken with those who never made it back out.

  • @EvenDarker
    @EvenDarker  2 года назад +26

    In proper chronological order and less edited. You'll get a better idea of what really happened and the real level of danger vs not danger.
    *This cave has now received a proper accurate map including the new new passage we accidentally discovered. The mapping team was very thorough, uncovering passage that even we did not find on this trip. So that's all good news for future generations of cavers who wander in. And it makes a nice tidy end to the story.

      First video of 2022 (on the mainpage) is a newly discovered cave. It's got a horrible, horrible entrance and then a nice big walk through cave with formations.
      I cannot stress how awful the entrance is.

    • @billsanders9387

      @EvenDarker  2 года назад +2

      Yeah objectively it was no problem.
      Still get a little nervous once I'm turned around but in a way I'd rather it happened than not. It makes the experience more fun and there's no real concern of getting permanently lost.

      We've located and mapped a few hundred new caves in the area... so a little bit behind the capping. It's probably an era that is ending unless a cave is rather huge or public. It's just so simple to keep track of things online with GPS coordinates.

      It's not a stupid question. All the good technical questions are on this 2nd channel!
      Nothing works underground. GPS above ground but the moment you are under nothing works. No radio no GPS. Navigation in the cave is either done by memory or by map. Maps are made using lasers which are extremely accurate.
      Communication in caves is usually just not done. But you can crack a rock on the wall and hear that quite a ways through a cave. I mean thousands of feet.

      It depends. We have a lot of limestone caves around here but they are all smaller than the lava tubes.

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад +2

      No. Because the magma rolls along the surface of the Earth and burns down into the Earth. Making most of these surface tubes.
      There are a couple of the lava caves which are flat and wide and on Sunny days have a very interesting way of thermal heating. Otherwise these caves are mostly freezing.
      Nearer to the Volcano there are some Hot Springs essentially. There there heat is from the Volcano itself. But they're pretty close. Like in the caldron!

    We're you ever able to get into nutty putty before they closed it due to that terrible John Jones accident? R.I.P Also just like your opinion on keeping the cave closed for good? Some agree others dont.

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад +1

      There's no need to close a cave. The problem was it was a public cave and drew a lot of amateurs. Which is OK but eventually people get showing and end up getting in trouble.
      They could have gated off the difficult sections. from my understanding it's not a large cave, nor is it difficult it's just a bit costrophobic.
      The John Jones death will always be an anomaly. Something like if someone fell off the top of the building and then they closed all buildings so that people wouldn't fall off the top of them any more. It's just a bizarre circumstance that people have reacted to strangely.

    • @VTSifuSteve
      @VTSifuSteve 2 года назад +1

      @@EvenDarker You keep saying this, but the John Jones accident was not an "anomaly". With the public traffic that cave got there were a lot of young people in their teens and twenties getting stuck ....which most folks find unacceptable. And with the number of accidents and rescues happening, a death was probably inevitable.
      I did a little poking around on the internet and it looks like just between 1999 and 2004 there were at least 6 prior rescues of young people who got seriously stuck attempting to squeeze through some very narrow passages, with one of the last ones happening in nearly the same location as the John Jones tragedy. Although successful, it was a horrendously difficult rescue. Then the was cave completely closed for some years, only finally being reopened after being gated with restricted access, yet the Jones tragedy still occurred.
      Clearly the cave had some very dangerous areas that should have been restricted to all but serious, high level cavers. This was not done, a gruesome and highly publicized accident happened, so predictably the public outcry resulted in the permanent closure of the cave. That's the way things work.

      Yeah the caving world is a very private world. You can find success on the Internet but you have to be... skillful and persistent. I once sat on my phone for 8 hours straight and ended up finding a map to a cave in our local area on a Korean geological website.
      But you'll find little success outside of joining a state recognized caving group. In the US we call them grottos and there are multiple grotto's per state. They are the keepers of the caves. Some of them are friendly and open to outsiders, while others are not. It is not a difficult world to break into but it does have its borders. If you're serious about doing some caving, that's the road the path you'll have to take.
      It's like fight club. You can join, but you can't talk about it.
      Good luck.
