    That is one gorgeous wooden flute case. With a case like that I'd probably care more about stains on the case than about stains on the instrument lol

    Thank you for an excellent review and clear description of embouchure, air shape, speed, and direction for the DZ-700.
    I'm playing again for fun but am really out of date. To modernize, I got a DZ-700 but had troubles with the upper registers. Your comments about the cut of the head joint, drawings and descriptions changed the way I approached this flute. Now I can get the higher pitched harmonics and I get a beautiful sound in all registers.

    Fabulous, detailed review! I've been playing the 700BOF for 3 years and have largely enjoyed it. It's important to state that I'm a saxophonist/flute doubler, and don't have the finesse of a fine flautist. The keywork has held up perfectly through daily practice and (pre-COVID) weekend gigging, despite the affordable price. That says a lot, since my sax fingers are harder on the springs than a more delicate hand. Your review seems to back up what my friend, a flute doctorate with Flute Authority suggested to me, however- that the embouchure required for this instrument is a bit challenging. He likened it to Powell's headjoint, which makes perfect sense, as Dr. Di Zhao was their (and Powell's) headcutter. And while these are all very fine and popular instruments, my friend stated that they're not natural for his embouchure either. I've felt quite inconsistent on the DZ. So, after 3, mostly impressive years, I've moved to a Trevor James Virtuoso Voce, and for me it's a much more natural blow, and a finer and beefier instrument overall.

    I wanted a new flute for performance in my church. I went to Warfields Fine Flutes and tried a North Bridge 700 and a Di Zhao 801. I really wanted the North Bridge for the McKenna head, as well as esthetic reasons, but found the square cut embouchure to be a problem for me to sound, particularly low notes. A more seasoned player would no doubt find the NB to be a fine instrument as well. I had little interest in the Di Zhao line, again merely for esthetic concerns, but it proved to be the flute that chose me. I found the 801 to be an amazingly easy instrument to play throughout my practiced range. An old, self taught, farmer with weak lungs and arthritic hands, and yet this flute makes me almost sound like I know what I'm doing. I've taken to calling it "Alfred", it being the butler in white gloves and tux, that brings me the notes I ask for on a silver tray. It's almost effortless.

    Hey Joanna, I've been watching your videos for months now and I really appreciate the intricate details you give in your flute reviews! I'm a clarinetist that doubles on flute and I've been trying step-up flutes at music conventions here in Texas. I've been contemplating on a few flutes to buy, but one flute has caught my attention. I was wondering if you could do a flute review on North Bridge Flutes, particularly the 500 model. I've been researching the company and Chris Mckenna, but there isn't as much to go on. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

    Would you consider reviewing instruments at the same price point? While it is nice to know how the Di Zhao 500 and 700 compare, it doesn't help the budget restricted buyers as much since they have $1500+ price difference. My review request is for piccolos: Pearl pfp105 vs Storm by Gemeinhardt vs Di Zhao DZP (102 or 202), especially the 1st two though.
    PS. You do the best review videos. I appreciate how thorough you are with the instruments, rather than just the "watch me play this flute" type videos a lot of other people do. Thanks!

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  6 лет назад +4

      I've considered doing this, and in fact, that's kind of how I started out these reviews. However, as I kept doing these reviews, I quickly discovered that each company really has their own set of rules and convictions about what their flute is worth and/or why they might use different materials or have them made in different ways (e.g. how much is factory made vs. handmade, etc.). It was surprising to learn that even flutes with the same specs from different companies can have wildly different price points, so what I ended up finding was that reviewing instruments at similar price points resulted in far too many differences to cover in one video (e.g. spacing/resistance of the keys might feel different; embouchure is so wildly different that it may skew my view on which one is "better" when, in fact, they're made for different people; etc.).
      Basically, the idea is that the differences are so insane that I tended to think, "This one is better than that one," when it's really not the case. It's just "this one feels better to _Joanna_ ". That, I believe, is not a true review. I want you guys to actually know how these flutes like to be played, and me telling you which one feels better to me does not make any constructive contribution to your decision on choosing a flute that works for _you_ .
      I do firmly believe that someone else can make reviews like you are requesting without the temptation for this insane bias. It's just that after some experimentation, I found out that that person is not me. The temptation is too great to make a super biased review when comparing 2 or 3 different companies' flutes, so I opted to just stick with one company per video so I can really focus on what that company has to offer. In this way, I can let you guys explore and compare different flutes through my reviews and decide for yourselves what would work best for you. :)
      I hope that fully answers why I do reviews this way! Thank you so much for watching, and I really do appreciate your feedback and warm, encouraging comment!!

    • @ill_prepared_optimist
      @ill_prepared_optimist 6 лет назад

      JustAnotherFlutist I appreciate that you are doing as honest reviews as you can. And it does make sense that if there are too many differences between some flutes, it would be hard to go through all the details in one video. Well, keep it up. Thanks!

    Hey Joanna! Love your flute reviews! I have a question, I feel as if I'm doing double tongue wrong. for the K syllable I literally just articulate that K with my throat & not like use my tongue to tongue up against the roof of my mouth. Like for single tonguing (the T part if KTKTKT)how you would hit right on top of your top row of teeth & for the K part I articulate with my throat I guess so to say.. have I been learning/practicing double tongue incorrectly this whole time?? rip

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  6 лет назад +2

      Hahaha, to be honest, I learned how to double tongue very far down in my mouth as well. It wasn't really explained in a very detailed way. Over time, I discovered that you actually can double tongue in _multiple_ different ways, and, in fact, many teachers have different thoughts on what constitutes "correct" double tonguing. I find that it really has to do with the flute itself and what it likes. Don't feel bad about having to "relearn" double tongue--think of it more as an experiment to find out what your flute likes :)

    I appreciate your flute demos. Do you have any reports about silver plating on keys deteriorating easily (or flaking off) on di zhao 700? I read on some post, only one post, that this is a problem. Not finding any other negative reviews. I'm concerned because I tend to react with silver causing tarnish on chin even cleaning my flute (Artley solid silver head) often with my polishing cloth. Get Black chin with or without makeup. I tried this 700 model and really like the way it responds but concerned if silver finish will hold up on keys. Is the plating thick/heavy enough on these flutes? My older Artley does not flake and looks brand new. Could the Di zhao report be isolated issue? Does manufacturer warranty cover the silver finish on mechanism? Thank you in advance to anyone who has information.

      Diane Weldon I also read about the Di zhao supposedly having inferior plating - must have been the same post! It worried me so I’ve been scouring the internet since for more information about the quality of Di Zhao and there isn’t much more I can find as they seem to be a relatively new brand. I know this is a bit later now so let me know if you found any more information!

      Hi! Super late reply, but I’ve had my Di Zhao 600 for about 3 years now, and even though I’m incredibly picky about its upkeep and cleaning, the solid sterling silver headjoint has still managed to tarnish horribly where the head connects to the body and slightly above that. The lip plate has never given me an issue, but the rest of the flute seems to tarnish quite easily and quickly, despite my best efforts to keep it clean. It mainly tarnishes around the joints and around the tone hole solder joints. Hope that helps! (P.S. to those of you looking the buy, while Di Zhaos do have an incredible tone for the price, it is definitely not a long term instrument. I’ve found that it comes out of adjustment much faster than some of the other flutes I’ve owned, so I have to get it serviced a minimum of two times a year. It’s great for the price, but perhaps not the best choice if you’re looking for something built to last.)

    Hello Joanna! Sorry if I am a little late, but I have marching season this summer, I have already marched two years so I have experience. I know this probably near impossible but are there any flutes that are closed hole but project and have the clarity of a open- holed flute? My other closed hole flutes are reaching the end of their life and I'm afraid I will have a very poor sound if I keep the same flute for another year. But there is a big possibility since I made all state that I could have a solo so I don't want to let the band down if this is the case. If you have any recommendations please get back to me? Thanks :)

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  6 лет назад

      Actually, open holes don't actually do too much to the projection of your sound. It's more to do with the type of metals used and where they are used on the flute (riser, lip plate, headjoint, body). I'm making my way through as many flutes as possible so you can get a great idea of which flutes tend to project more vs. others that require a bit more finesse but maybe play well with tone colours. :)

    Hi, Joanna! Your review videos are SO informative! Are you aware of any flutes that aren't handmade but which have the option for a C# roller in addition to the D# roller? Yamaha seems to reserve even the D# roller for their handmade flute lines. In fact, in my research so far, the Di Zhao 700 is the ONLY non-handmade model I've come across from any maker that even offers the D# roller as an option. Basically, I'm looking for the most full-featured non-handmade flute model available in terms of keywork options, and this Di Zhao 700 seems to be that.

    I play a di zhao 700 but. It doesn't have a split E or gold riser. Another thing the type of case cover my flute came in damaged my wood case because the zipper kept scratching it.

      Oh!! That's really sad! Be sure to contact Di Zhao directly (the actually man behind the company)!! He is wonderful to work with and will take care of you!

      Split E and the gold riser both aren’t standard on the 700, which means you would need to customize it and pay more. :)

      TMD SB I know I like my flute the way it is. I plan to try out some di zhao head joints someday and get a new head joint to go into a master's degree with😊. I'm just upset about my beautiful wood case being chipped😢

    Joanna!
    I know this comment is totally irrelevant to this video but it would be really awesome to hear your opinion and views on "Do's and Don'ts with an Accompanist." For example, how much time to give your accompanist to learn a piece of music etc.

    Yay, I have the Di Zhao 700! My experience with this flute has been good so far, however I absolutely HATE the case, it is so fragile and it already has huge cracks in it and is about to fall apart when I only had it for less than a year and never dropped it 😵 but great review! Can you review burkart flutes next? (also im surprised that the 700 has a gold riser and split E with c sharp trill key. Did they upgrade the model? Bc mine only has a silver riser and no other specs but it's the same 700 model😶)

      I'm sorry hear that!! Please contact Di Zhao directly, I know he will help you!! Maybe he did upgrade the model, I'm not sure! It's super customizable now!!

      It’s a customizable flute, which means you need to pay more for the gold riser :)

      Yes. Could you please review the Burkhart Resona 300? My 15 year old daughter loves her Di Zhao 400 of 5 years and now ready to upgrade. She is thinking DZ 700 vs Yamaha 677. Also thinking Muramatsu EX. Thank you. Decisions, decisions!

      one thing that you have to worry about with wood is it cracking. If the temperature fluctuates to much then the case will crack regardless of if you drop it our not. Try keeping it in a climate proof condition

      Makes it a lot easier to slide the right band pinky from the D# key to the low C# key! 😊
