I got this camera 1 week ago but i havent been able to test it too much yet. I also just got a new macbook pro, but I use Windows stationary PC at home. I followed this guide and it worked brilliant on both mac and PC with USB-C to USB-C and USB-A :) Thank you for a nice simple guide! Im getting some longer cables, because I tested with my SSD cables (5 cm) but it worked for sure !
hello, I would like to know if you got the same Power Supply Adapter he recommended on the video? in the Amazon link it does not says it is compatible with EOS R8, so I am not sure to buy it yet, also how has your experience been with it if you have it? thank you
You're a wizard! Greatly appreciated!! I've spent so much time trying to get the Canon app to work on my computer without any success and this is way better!
This video is SOO well done & helpful, thank you! I like that you don't have to use the Canon utility. Are you comfortable with the 3rd party dummy battery? Experience with it? I'd prefer the Canon one but wow, it's spendy. Because the R8 has the card slot on the bottom--I really don't like it (I'm on a tripod a lot & need to change cards frequently), but I could see myself getting it as a webcam and lightweight backup camera. Tempting.
Hello and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I use dummy batteries with the cord that plugs into the wall on a few cameras in my studio with no issues, you should be fine..👍
For daily meetings, do you leave dummy battery plugged in with power supply and also leave the camera power switch on, and let computer to control camera system on/off? I used my Canon 5D mark III as a webcam. The switch was on with a dummy battery plugged in all the time, and it caused a problem to my camera: I could not power it on after usage for about a month. I just ordered a new Canon R8 in Amazon with an adaptor so I can still use the EF lenses. It sounds like I can cancel my subscription of EOS Webcam Utility Pro (you did not use that in your video). Any thoughts?
Hi Jason, Great video. Nicely done and to the point. Appreciate your video. Have you done any tests between using USB versus HDMI for streaming yet? I bought the R8 and will be doing some streaming for interviews, etc., but I'm a little disappointed with the USB out only being FHD at 30 given that the port can handle full 4k. This seems like a bizarre software crippling by Canon. I think I might then have to use the HDMI option. But now concerns are: 1. Is the output quality really 4k from that port, and 2. Would it run a lot hotter then and either turn off from overheating or drain the battery faster. I'd be very interested to know how the output quality compares between the two ports as well as how they each perform in terms of heat and battery performance. Finally, I'd also love to know if the camera can still record internally to card while still outputting to either USB or HDMI at full spec. Thanks again for this video. 😎👍
Awesome video, thanks so much!! Only problem with this method, I cannot record on my camera while doing it this way through FaceTime. I have a question for you. I'll be doing some filming this month with my Canon R8. I would love to also be able to view the live feed to my Macbook Air (or possibly iPad). What program/s do I have to use, and mostly I would have to hook up to the HDMI output of my camera? Is there a good app or just use screenrecord on my Macbook Air if I also want to record the video and/or audio? I would also record video/audio on the camera to it's SD card. I guess to Tether, is the word I'm looking for lol
I'm not fully sure about your use case. But if you want to use HDMI out of your cam and see that as a source on PC you usually have to use a capture card (for example something like an Elgato HD60S or a Elgato Camlink 4k or from any other brand) which provides at least the resolution and framerate you are targeting. For recording on your PC / Mac you need to use some recording program. I live stream and for that we use OBS and honestly I would probably even use OBS if I wanted to record anything else from my cam on pc. Essentially you would feed in the canon feed via HDMI to your cap card, add it as a resource to your scene in OBS and then record to your SSD / HDD via OBS. You can then also enable the virtual camera inside OBS and use this virtual camera as the source for Teams or FaceTime (if Facetime allows that I'm not sure about that) which means you can use whatever you show in your OBS scene including any potential overlays, greenscreen filters, whatever, to your program used for communication
Thanks for the great tutorial! Just had a quick question. How does this method compare to using the EOS Webcam Utility Pro? Are there any video to audio lags with either method that you've noticed?
Thanks. Your method of directly selecting the camera in Zoom worked beautifully and reliably! The EOS Webcam Utility Pro couldn't even detect my R8 (seems like a common problem). I'm happy to report no video-audio discrepancy. Just to confirm, do you set shutter speed to 1/60 given frame rate is 30 FPS?
Somehow I cannot connect my R7 or R10. The icon to allow connecting the camera to macbook does pop up but I do not get the icon on the camera screen and it does not show up in Facetime… Any thoughts what’s wrong there?
One quick question. I get a lot of mixed feedback from people regarding whether or not that USB-C will charge the phone while filming. Because I live stream I am afraid to find out. In your video you discuss this. It sounds like purchasing the dummy battery linked below is my best option, correct? Thanks again for an amazing video.
This camera does not charge while using the USB-C for a web camera based on my testing... So yeah, dummy battery would be the best solution to this problem in my opinion.
I don't understand the question exactly? If you are asking can you power the camera with the USB-C while using as a webcam the answer is no. So that is why I showed the dummy battery AC adapter.
I use a capture card with HDMI to stream on ECAMM in 1080 with my Canon RP and I also use this setup to record my videos through ECAMM. I want to get the R8 to upgrade my content to 4K. Will I be able to use this setup to stream and record in 4K through ECAMM?
Well you don't have to if you just want to use the one camera and your just talking... OBS and Ecamm for example allow you to do a lot more such as multi cameras, sharing PC screen, showing comments from live stream on the window for your viewers to see for example. I use Ecamm, but it's a month payment sort of thing and takes a bit of learning to use. OBS is free, but very complicated the last time I looked, so using that is a huge time investment in learning for sure, but works great once you dial it in.
@@Jason_Hermann thanku.. I'm from India uttrakhand... I would like to welcome you our country and our state there is holly temple "Badrinath " .. your most welcome thankyou once again
Use the R8 with the4K it was designed for and just load the SD card video to the computer via the EOS Utility. Then use a Zoom F3 or H8 and have the audio go into the R8...this is probably the bestquality you will get. Using the R8 as a webcam is a waste of the camera technology and the audio sucks compared to the F3 audio.
I agree, but these manufactures are still offering this option so I wanted to show off how it works for those interested. How exactly are you doing a live stream by loading the SD Card via the EOS Utility? I Only know about using the R8 HDMI out and a cam link style method for live 4k and the audio part makes perfect sense... Thanks, Jay
The resolution and frame rate of image output is 2K (1920×1080) at 30 fps according to the manual, so I would say no unless you use the HDMI out to a Camlink or something, but not using the USB turn key method.
OMG thank you so much!! This was driving me nuts!!!! You rock!

You saint, you saint, you gd saint, you. Thank you - having my cam cut off mid stream is awful. You've solved it

You're very welcome Jeff!
If I don't plan on exceeding 1080p, would you recommend using HDMI for even cleaner results, or would it be the exact same as using the USB streaming>
Yes, I would always recommend the HDMI option for the best results possible...
I’ll be trying this ASAP.
Perfect video. Have this camera. Love it. Thanks for the great content.
Excelente video. Straight to the point, thank you.
Great video, man!

Im considering buying a r8 but does it shut off after 30 mins? or any overheat issues when streaming?
Great video! Mabye can u do one explaining how to conect a bluetooth micro on this camera? it can be done??? Thanks
Thanks for the great tutorial! Just had a quick question. How does this method compare to using the EOS Webcam Utility Pro? Are there any video to audio lags with either method that you've noticed?
I'm not sure, because I have not used the Pro version, but yeah usually it will be way less restrictive...

If you just buy a cam link card and use the microhdmi for video, wouldnt you then be able to charge while recording?
Yes, or you can use and HDMI switch like the Atem I use also....

Do you think if I used a Hollyland attached that I could wirelessly livestream with the R8?
thanks for the info. What definition/quality does the image on the computer have?
You are very welcome and it's 1080 @ 30fps...
Can I use this in conjunction with my SM7b?
I've had the issue of my audio sounding whiny with this setup when live streaming.. is it something else I need to do?
Not sure what would be causing that? do you have a fan near the mic or something?
@Jason_Hermann no fan no loud noises...when I switch to hdmi and a capture card it's fine but usb to usb gives me the whiny sound🤷🏿
Sir for RUclips Live with canon R8 should I download any software like OBS any other

What lens are you using with the R8 in this video for that studio look with that nice bokeh?
The RF 24-50mm: geni.us/fYBc6

Do this cable works for a canon r10?
Is it possible to get 4k output as a webcam?
The resolution and frame rate of image output is 2K (1920×1080) at 30 fps according to the manual, so I would say no unless you use the HDMI out to a Camlink or something, but not using the USB turn key method.
@@Jason_Hermannthx !!
What about color space and compression, bit depth, color sub sampling, and HDR PQ possibility?
In USB Streaming mode the options are very limited
I used a cable for the HDMI port, it doesn't work :( what do I do?
You need to use a USB cable like I did in this video in order to use the camera as web camera?
Does it charge while using it as a webcam

Hey!
1920x1080 is 1K not 2k btw.
Thanks. Why the bokeh is so bad ? The edges of your clothes get faded, kinda like a software bokeh
Just the way it looks in this scene due to the lighting and stuff. No software bokeh was added....
👍👍
1080 as 2k?
pretty much, yeah...
