Your overview and quality was great, especially compared to others that talk about live-streaming and switching. Thanks and please cover this topic more!
Thanks for the info. I am glad you did not have any issue with those wireless transmitters. I have 3 sets of Hollyland 400 S Pro and I always loose them every few minutes turning them into a useless alternatives. And I am talking in spaces where they look each other directly in less than 200 ft.
I would recommend hard wiring with SDI am whenever possible 3G SDI is all you need and anything over 1080p is over kill for live streams. Another thing is having all your cameras being plugged in for power is almost always crucial.
I have USB power to a power bank always if I’m running a camera for longer than 30 minutes. I would run cables but in many situations it’s easier to go wireless and with no more than 50ft distance the latency is not noticeable.
Very nice video. I also wanted to use the motu for sound but I can't get it working. I use the Atem mini extreme iso with 3 Fuji cameras with Hdmi cables and electrical cables. Use also Companion and Streamdeck. I have an iPad to connect a PowerPoint to the Atem. Sound capture with Rode wireless Go2 into the camera. I film especially workshops and teaching courses. I wish your video was made 3 years ago, then it would be perfect for me as a starting point. Well done!
Regarding audio setup i have good experience with running the mixed audio through my camera no1. I plugin the xlr cables and use then the embedded audio in the hdmi signal from that camera. In the Atem i select audio only from that camera. This way i almost never had any issues with synchronicity.
Quite similar setup for our conferences. Though I use now a Rodecaster Pro II for sound, especially because I need also a moderator directly talking with attendees in Teams and also feed back audio from online to the main room. As the new Rodecaster has those routing options including avoiding loopbacks, that works quite well. Thinking of using a Blackmagic DeckLink Quad HDMI Recorder in a PCIe to Tunderbolt box and OBS on a HP Zbook plus a small Stream Deck instead of the Atem mini in future. As nice it is having the Atem running independently and so keep PC load low, I just dislike the Blackmagic switcher software. You can do with OBS so much more and much easier PiP and scenes. But I will bring the Atem along to venues, just as a backup or if needed as hdmi to webcam converter (runs more stable than Camlink in my opinion).
Tips on OBS scene setups for livestreaming and tips on setting up the audio mixer or different audio mixing options for people. I know blackmagic has some amazing hardware, but maybe some people are using digital audio mixers such as the donationware voicemeeter banana or trying to do less costly productions as a start out.
Thanks for this video. Bro, it’s obvious that videos about livestreaming are more in demand. I would like to hear how you output sound, what equipment you use. ❤
Great tutorial. Thank you. Of course there's a big spectrum here...but what do you typically charge for a 4-hour event? Or where could I find more about that?
HI Jerad! Just watched your Video and thank you for this! But one Point confuses me: Why you get more latency he longer the HDMI cable runs? You recommend converting to SDI. That's basically the correct way. But as you converting something you'll get latency. HDMI doesn't produces more latency the longer the cable is. HDMI was built for Consumers connecting DVD players with TV´s as example. There is no need for longer Cables than 15m. The next thing you recommend is, "go Wireless" Every wireless Connection, every Conversion adds latency. Much more than a longer HDMI Cable.
Thanks for this. Two questions: 1) What's the range on your wireless transmitters? 2) How are you getting your Starlink signal (I'm assuming from outside the building) into your production area?
Such a useful video, thank you! Question: How do you manage to incorporate slides shows into the live stream? How would you get that feed, would you use a HDMI splitter where one side goes to the projector and other side goes to your switcher?
Nice video with down to earth explanation of live stream setup. Our church’s 3 camera live stream is connected with Cat 6 through a PoE switch and into OBS from there. Audio is using an X32 Compact mixer to an audio interface. No video capture device. Is there anything I should know about using Ethernet cable instead of HDMI? Thanks.
We plan on live streaming our podcasts and have 3 cameras that are in 4k that we would like to switch between during recording. You mentioned in the video that the Atem Mini down samples the quality to 1080. Is there a live stream switcher that keeps the 4k quality within the cameras whilst live streaming and exporting? Thank you so much… we are excited to make this dream a reality.
You talked about plugin a backup to the atem mini in order to record the videos in case the live stops. Need more details about it, where to plug it? Etc...
My school approved my proposal for livestreaming and I have equipment on order. If this works out, I'll be upgrading next school year to wireless. @@jeradcamera
Hi Jared! Great video thank you! Question.. with most no camcorder cameras having a 30 minute record limit or overheating problems how do you adjust for a live stream? Thank you!
please make a dedicated video of your Audio Setup, I understood everything else except the Audio, and also how do you feed your live stream into the in house projector
Hi. Love your video. Got few questions: 1. What is the name of the rig gadget that holds your receiver and atem in that video? Looks ergonomics. 2. Why u not suggesting audio input from in-house to atem? 3. What is that audio gadget to replace the audio input. Not the shotgun. The another method. Its not a sound mixer.
Have you found a way of ISO recording and exporting out to OBS at the same time? I understand the hard drive takes up the slot you would normally use to connect to your computer.
I have used multiple cam links but most of my cameras can connect using USB now so I don’t really use cam links anymore. I try to limit overloading usb because it can cause a port to fail and the only way to get it back is to restart the computer.
Thanks for the video, Jared. It’s nice to know it’s not alone to do the livestream service. I hope I can find this video 4 years ago so I can be less struggled lol. Quick question, I found that it’s better to use ATEM mini as main video processing device instead of using OBS, due to the reason that OBS will be using graphics card of the PC broadcasting. (So I actually inputting my PPT slide source into atem mini and use the macros on the software control to make the scene.) How do you think about it?
I've done many livestreams with a similar setup to yours - looking at restarting that business now. Wondering why you went with Sony mirrorless cameras rather than camcorders? I've used mirrorless cameras for livestream (GH5 and similar) and found then to be bit of a pain - cost of lenses, battery capacity, cost of camera etc. I know the A7 will give better picture quality but no one I worked with ever cared or noticed. Why use mirrorless?
Thanks for your helpful video. I would be interested in watching a tutorial on where to place cameras for a two camera stream, three camera set up, etc. There are a lot of videos out there showing how to use switchers and OBS, but few on camera placement.
Camera placement highly depends on the nature of whatever you want to capture. Here is one rule of thumb that I personally follow: at least one camera should be dedicated to the overall view, to place the viewer in a context; this is also the minimum setup. Then, if you have a second camera, you can place it more to the side and maybe nearer to the stage to provide some depth and perspective. Alternatively, you can use zoom lens on the second camera to emphasize an area where some important action is anticipated. If you have one more camera, you can place it in a way that allows to cover areas which are underrepresented by the second camera. Any extra cameras can be used as spot cameras; for example, if you're working with a band, you can set up a camera for a member who is not the main soloist, but is going to play a solo at some point, etc.
Great setup! We're using PTZ cameras and running SDI+Ethernet loomed, though I'm wondering about trying to add Wireless. Do you find that the wireless latency is noticeable between wired and wireless inputs? Do you delay the wired to sync up with the audio correctly?
Hello! This was a really good video, it helped a lot! But I still have a question in my head. If I use a switcher, do I need capture cards for mí camera? Im sorry if its already mentioned somewhere... Thanks for the video btw.
Are there any cheaper options to live stream wirelessly? Also any more options for power banks or battery systems that can power a camera for 6-8 hours

The ATEM records to SSD. You simply plug into the device and it recognizes the drive. You hit record and it captures each channel of video and a full edit of everything you switched while recording.
Thank you for the information. Ever seen a way to switch to and from your main camera hands free, on a multi-camera set up? Say maybe a foot peddle. Would like to set up the automatic camera switching but able to switch to and from the main camera without my hands as I will have my hands full.
