My Canon R5 works well connecting the USB micro right into my Mac Pro. Ecamm immediately detects it and it works. But I'm not sure if the quality is as good or not. I just got the Elgato Cam Link and am trying it now.

Yes, the HDMI capture card does give you a much better result. However, you can also choose a cheap capture card and don't have to purchase the CamLink 4k (if you don't need 4k).
The Canon EOS R can be charged via USB-C. BUT it will only charge when it is turned off. The camera can not be powered by USB-C you will need a so called Dummy Battery to do that.

Hi Neil, that is true. Sony, Canon, GoPro (and probably others) do have features like that. However only with quality limits as you already pointed out. Does the elgato camlink 4k allow audio input via HDMI? Have you incorporated the audio from the camera via HDMI into the computer? Its posibble? Thanks!
Hello Chris, Great video, thanks! I am using Canon R7 camera for Facebook livestream and I am having an issue, my camera goes to sleep after 30 min. Could you please tell me what I should do to avoid this. My live-streamings are usually longer than 30 min. Please help! Thanks.
There is a setting in the Video settings of the R type cameras which is "auto power off" and you have to set this to "never" or whatever the menu options are.
That is only partially true. Yes you can use the canon EOS Webcam Utility - however, that does not provide audio to your computer and it also does not provide 4k (not even 1080p). I have a comparison of the cam link vs. the Usb solution on my channel here: ruclips.net/video/HEZl2YlWMek/видео.html So the usb solution works. It’s just not as good as a cam link (or a cheaper alternative).
When using the video capture, do you need a memory to be inserted in the camera?? Because I have a Canon 700D and the memory card port does not work, please let me know this is an option.
I want to connect my EOS R to android tablet S8 ultra ; to use it as a monitor for my cam . how can I get the best quality 4k results?? And do u recommend a specific Vedio capture card ???
If it is possible to use a UVC type camera model (aka a usb webcam), then you could use something like the CamLink 4k which is a very nice HDMI capture card. Though, if you only want to use it as a monitor, I also wouldn't mind using less than 4k since the S8 Ultra screen is not big enough to really see a huge difference between 4k and 1080p.
I would take the Zoom H4n and connect it to the Computer via USB and then use that as my microphone. But if you don't want to do that, you can also use the Line-Out of the Zoom H4n and connect that to your camera and use that. The Elgato CamLink does provide the sound from the cameras mic to the computer. So that works either way. Good luck.
Mine is the Canon EOS R - no number. It was the first canon Mirrorless and it still has the mini HDMI instead of the micro. Luckily the cable clamp 🗜️ is pretty good on the newer cameras to hold the micro hdmi in place.
Hello Chris! Can you message how I can live stream my kids football games to RUclips, Facebook or Instagram? Is that even an option to do? I have a canon EOS r10. Do I have to get the items you’re speaking of on this video? I have a laptop to take to games if I need to. But prefer not to. Please let me know. Thank you in advance
You could live stream directly from your phone. There are streaming apps / or you use the RUclips app straight up. Alternatively, you can connect the R10 to your laptop via USB and it can work as a camera for the live stream as well. I am not 100% (I don't own the R10) you may need to download a Canon Webcam utility to connect the camera.
The EOS Utility has nothing to do with the Elgato Camlink. You need to use either the Elgato streaming program, OBS, or just use the webcam in another program like Skype or so.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for the tidbits. I'm giving some thought to the EOS R line, though waffling back and forth between it and the 90D. Either way, nice to know I'll need a bit of extra hardware for capture.
Hi. What camara do u recomend for a livestream church service, with good autofocus, full frame qualitt budget camera, or this "overpriced camera" still the best one? What about the canon eos rp? Ty
For this use case I would recommend a camera that does 1080p and auto focus and I would most likely go with a Sony camera. Despite using Canon at the moment myself. I am constantly looking at the Sony a6400 because it can record for longer than 30 minutes, has HDMI output, a microphone input, and features interchangeable lenses. Now, it's not full frame but non the less an incredible camera. In the Full Frame are I'd say the RP is a great camera, however, maybe the Sony a7 would also be a good choice there. they are affordable and have 1080p as well. Of course you can always go higher with the money spending. But keep in mind that for a quality life stream you just need 1080p and not 4k. So you can easily look at models that are not the newest. Good luck and happy streaming.
Thank you for the video. Very informative and actionable content. I've been following these steps using the cam link 4k and a canon eos r and dummy battery. Everything was going well with the setup. The problem begins after the dummy battery is plugged in. The moment that the cam link plugs in to the computer's usb port, my canon eos r screen goes blank & PC does not recognise the camera. Changing the camera settings doesn't seem to help. Can someone tell me how to fix this? I've been working on it for a while with no success. Thanks
Hi Chris, if you're on a Mac, you can connect a Canon camera without any capture card, by using Ecamm Live software. And with the pro subscription you can use the feed as a virtual webcam in any other software :)
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks I didn't know it was up to 720p only. Oh by the way they've just announced additional compatibility for other brands by I didn't manage to connect the a6600 yet. Got to go through the HD60S+
You can run the mic through the camera. My partner uses that setup with the rode wireless go for yoga sessions. Personally, I mostly use the Zoom F6 and the Oktava MK 012 or the Shure Beta 57a (for podcasts) and those are connected via XLR to the F6 and that via USB to the MacBook. The downside however is that there is a couple milliseconds difference in the video which you don’t have when using the mic connected to the camera directly. Happy streaming. 🌸
Karl, the elgato website has a page where you can check the compatibility of each camera (ie. they can output a clean HDMI feed and can run continuous power without shutting down....) Check for yourself about the 5Ds here - www.elgato.com/en/gaming/cam-link/camera-check

Does the elgato camlink 4k allow audio input via HDMI? Have you incorporated the audio from the camera via HDMI into the computer? Its posibble? Thanks!
@@ChrisSpieglThanks!!!! 👏👏👏
The EOS R does this with out the need of the cam link.
That is only partially true. Yes you can use the canon EOS Webcam Utility - however, that does not provide audio to your computer and it also does not provide 4k (not even 1080p). I have a comparison of the cam link vs. the Usb solution on my channel here: ruclips.net/video/HEZl2YlWMek/видео.html
So the usb solution works. It’s just not as good as a cam link (or a cheaper alternative).
When using the video capture, do you need a memory to be inserted in the camera?? Because I have a Canon 700D and the memory card port does not work, please let me know this is an option.
@@mikemulumba it doesn’t need it on the EOSR, it should be the same.
Though, if you only want to use it as a monitor, I also wouldn't mind using less than 4k since the S8 Ultra screen is not big enough to really see a huge difference between 4k and 1080p.
great video!!! thank you
Thank you 🌸
Hi, what is with better sound, mic? Can I connect mic od zoom h4n pro and output to eos r, for better audio?
I would take the Zoom H4n and connect it to the Computer via USB and then use that as my microphone. But if you don't want to do that, you can also use the Line-Out of the Zoom H4n and connect that to your camera and use that. The Elgato CamLink does provide the sound from the cameras mic to the computer. So that works either way. Good luck.
Great content and the video is put together really well.
What Lens do you have on the R ?
In this video I was probably using the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 or Canon RF 24-105mm f/4
How has your R6 got a large HDMI cable port? Mines got the stupid tiiiiiny one
Mine is the Canon EOS R - no number. It was the first canon Mirrorless and it still has the mini HDMI instead of the micro.
Luckily the cable clamp 🗜️ is pretty good on the newer cameras to hold the micro hdmi in place.
Chris can this be used with a cell phone like the Note 9?
DSLR - HDMI < CamLink > Note 9 - Screen Recorder Software, etc.
Very helpful thank you! 👍
Thanks so much!
what hdmi cable does the eos r need
Can you do Canon EOS R to ninja to elgato?
Will this work in zoom
Thanks for the clear explanation Chris, but my EOS Utility doesn't recognize my M50, any idea what's going on? I connect it with the Elgato CamLink
The EOS Utility has nothing to do with the Elgato Camlink. You need to use either the Elgato streaming program, OBS, or just use the webcam in another program like Skype or so.
Have you looked at the EOS Webcam Utility Beta application from Canon?
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for the tidbits. I'm giving some thought to the EOS R line, though waffling back and forth between it and the 90D. Either way, nice to know I'll need a bit of extra hardware for capture.
does this not support HDMI out in 4k? why are you only using 1080?
Thanks
Which software are you using?
Hi Chris, if you're on a Mac, you can connect a Canon camera without any capture card, by using Ecamm Live software. And with the pro subscription you can use the feed as a virtual webcam in any other software :)
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks I didn't know it was up to 720p only. Oh by the way they've just announced additional compatibility for other brands by I didn't manage to connect the a6600 yet. Got to go through the HD60S+
This is great! Thanks, Chris. What about sound? Do you run a mic through your camera as well?
You can run the mic through the camera. My partner uses that setup with the rode wireless go for yoga sessions.
Personally, I mostly use the Zoom F6 and the Oktava MK 012 or the Shure Beta 57a (for podcasts) and those are connected via XLR to the F6 and that via USB to the MacBook. The downside however is that there is a couple milliseconds difference in the video which you don’t have when using the mic connected to the camera directly.
Happy streaming. 🌸
Great job
Can we do this with a 5D MK III or IV
Karl, the elgato website has a page where you can check the compatibility of each camera (ie. they can output a clean HDMI feed and can run continuous power without shutting down....)
Check for yourself about the 5Ds here - www.elgato.com/en/gaming/cam-link/camera-check
GOOD CAN I USE IT IN "VIMIX" EOSR CABLE TO ELGATO CAM LINK COMPUTER THEN CONNECT TO VIMIX
CAN THE EOS R AUTO DISPLAY OFF BE DSIABLED ?
No, only delayed up to 30 minutes.
How do we use this to livestream in RUclips?
Chris Spiegl cheers 👍😊 btw is OBS a free software ?
@@ChrisSpiegl Hi, I have used CamLink 4k with RUclips as a webcam, but it only comes it at 720p ... have you experienced that limitation as well?
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks! My camera is a C200 ... so it outputs 4K LOL. I believe it is a limitation of the web cam option on RUclips because when I go through the Cam Link, I get 4k
@@ChrisSpiegl Yes, when I use OBS, I get 1080p.
Can I setup a coaching with your for live streaming please
When using the video capture, do you need a memory to be inserted in the camera?? Because I have a Canon 700D and the memory card port does not work, please let me know this is an option.
We use it without a capture card all the time. However, that's with the Canon EOS R. So, it may work, or it might not.
Very good video, thanks!
But I have a doubt recently I bought a Canon M200 for streaming, and a cheap capture card (from amazon) it manages 1080p 30fps. What is the best setting to configure? Leave the camera at 1080p 30fps or 60fps?
I would go with 1080p 30fps. This also gives you a better motion blur which looks more natural for human interaction. It also will be less work on your system and the capture card.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for your response!
So, a summary. In the camera settings I leave the option of 1080p 30fps and the shutter speed is 1/60?
@@piQmi Yes, shutter speed double the frame rate is always a good idea. This will also help not to need so much light in your room. Good luck.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks again for your answer, you have won a subscriber. You can see the quality I get in this video here www.twitch.tv/videos/801812265?t=00h09m43s I had the shutter at 1/40 and the camera at 1080p 60fps, but now I'm going to test the camera at 1080p 30fps and the shutter at 1/60
@@piQmi You have a great image there. Works great. And I think with the 1/60 shutter speed you'll get a bit of a sharper result. One thing I noticed is that your green screen seems a bit "harsh" at the corners and those look a bit choppy. But other than that… great quality stream.
I have the Elgato 60 S and you can use it as a webcam. You can also use a tv to monitor the video.
Chris Spiegl i tried it with Microsoft Teams and works.
Will the Elgato cam link also recognize 3.5mm audio input - like a Sennheiser wireless lav or Rode shotgun mic mounted to camera?
Only if you are plugging the microphone into the camera that then is connected via HDMI. The CamLink itself does not have a Mini-Jack Input.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comment here.
When i connect my m50 mark ii via elgaro capture card to obs after some seconds my display screen only from camera go black. How can i keep it open so i can use it for monitor?
I SEE U CONNECTED 1 CAMERA CAN I CONNECT 2
WITH 1 CAPTURE CARD
I have a Canon t6 and it shuts down in 26 min please help. I also have everything you mention
Not sure where the setting is on the T6, but 2 things:
1) do not record in the camera, it will probably stop after 30 minutes.
2) try to find the "auto power off" menu item and set it to "never" that should do the trick.
where did you buy the cam link. Every where seems to be sold out. Thanks
Definitely, there is a shortage of this device as everyone seems eager to do live streaming during the confinement. The Cam Link Famine.
@@FUTR-tv just checked their website and it is also not available. Sold out everywhere
How do you get rid of shut offs after 30 mins
You have to setup the power saving settings in the camera:

Hi, Chris can I use windows? or it works for mac ony? Thank you!
yes u can.. all the same
Great Video! Question. What are you using to record audio? Are you able to hook up an external mic? Does the mic input on the EOS R transfer the audio across?
Thanks
@@ChrisSpiegl Thank you so much for your reply! A huge help. I have a Rode VideoMic I will plan on using... now just to find a Cam Link 4k in stock somewhere.
@@ChrisSpiegl exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks!
@@ChrisSpiegl Hi, thanks for the video. I am new to this world. I have a Canon EOS 80D that I am using to stream for work, and also a Rode VideoMic connected to the Canon. All good with the video, but in my case I am not getting any audio input from the camera trough the HDMI-Cam Link. I am seeing the audio levels on the Canon EOS 80D, but seems that I am not getting any audio signal to the Digital Audio Interface Cam Link 4K.
Would you be able to tell me if the Canon EOS 80D should behave like the EOS R? Or can you point me to a web reference?
Hi Chris
Any chance you can have a video on similar to this but using multiple camera. I lookjng to do live for my Church using 2 camera( live on RUclips). Not sure what other device should i buy?thank you so much
Chris Spiegl thank you so much 😊
I currently use my EOS REBEL T7 , through its USB port , rather then using the mini hdmi with a capture card attached , this works ok for me , but I’m looking to get the cam link because although it works most of the time , it caps me at a certain cam quality and says I need to buy the EOS Webcam utility premium to unlock the full 1080 at 60 FPS .
Depending on what you are doing, whatever quality you currently get is probably fine and you should improve in other areas first.
@@ChrisSpiegl Is this device worth to purchase although I get a good frame rate and video quality ? And you caught me by surprise on this one … what else should I work on ?
Sony A7iv is plug and play as a webcam
