Canon just released their EOS Webcam Utility that allows you to send the video signal STRAIGHT to your computer without needing a Cam Link.. or any capture card. BUT.. how is the quality? Is it worth it? Should you pick up a Canon??

Is this enough to get you to choose canon? What do you want out of a camera?
I want a perfect quality on a camera.👌👌👌👌
Is this available to use in BETA currently? i didnt see a link in the description
I have an M50 and was really not looking forward to the CamLInk. Now I don't have to worry and that's such a relief.
Canon m50!
Bro,it can help me very much cause i was overbudget for my gaming setup.
I think this is actually a pretty smart move from Canon. Especially in these times where it is SO difficult to get your hands on a camlink or pretty much any capture card, I think it was well strategically planned.
I really like this channel mate, I have followed this channel for a long time now and you make really good tips for small and big streamers out there, GREAT JOB!
Nice video Harris, particularly the USB vs HDMi comparison with the same camera. I tried it with a RUclips live stream on Friday night using an EOS R and RF 15-35mm f2.8 and wondered if it was the USB or my reduced internet bandwidth that was holding it back to 480p, but it still looked pretty good - AND of course was effectively free of charge. I've posted the live replay on my channel if you're interested.
Harris - I appreciate all the info on your channel. It's been really helpful as I try to make up lost ground in figuring out all the tech stuff the quarantine's forced me to finally learn. I've been teaching drum lessons online for years as a side to my "live" teaching, but just started streaming (from absolute scratch) a month ago. Your tips and input are well-organized and right to the point. Keep up the good work, man!
“Nikon doesn’t even know it exists” ded 🤣
I like nikon for the 1 reason that the lens mount hasn't changed from body to body.
@@justkidd1980 Yeah, I'm with you!
Would be nice if they could add webcam functionality, tho.
@@justkidd1980 I use Nikon for photography. They're not technically the best, but man they just make the best looking photos now days. I use Panasonic for content creation.
You can use sparkocam to do Nikon as USB webcam
@@EdwardDelaTorre thank you. I will give it a try.
I find it amazing when these companies are so open to you when trying to improve their products
This is awesome. Being a Canon user this is huge!
Ok I have a sl2. What I like is that you don’t have to remove the icons from the turn screen. The software makes it clean. Which means for my camera the auto focus can be used. Thanx for the info!
PUMPED someone finally did this, and double pumped it’s canon! I just picked up a used m50, can’t wait to test this out!
YuB it woks great.
Downloaded this as soon as it came out to test on a Zoom call! Literally every call I have people comment on the quality and how I have a real microphone LMAO
OMG, I can't thank you enough for this Harris. I've been using the Canon utility 3's remote live view window as window capture of my canon 77D and that was taking quite a bit of CPU. This thing is a game-changer for me. I tested this and it works perfectly on default settings of video device capture. No shutter no lag. And, thanks a ton for making such videos.
I just want to say that your RUclips videos are really good and inspired to do it. You have help me find the right equipment and hopefully I can put the work and grow. Trying to always improve everyday. Thank you harry
Past Harris: Nobodys innovating anymore. We need new stream stuff!
Canon: o rly?
Thank You Harris! I was so thrilled to hear this...Testing on twitch and Facebook today on StreamYard. I workout/train on Twitch so tell you what it’s like with movement. Was so excited to get the Canon GX7 Mark III however ...ALL REVIEWS neglected to mention the 1,000 RUclips subscriber limit! So no live-streaming with my Canon 🙁 (then to do that I had to buy a Camlink, cords etc etc... $400 extra later AUD🤯).
Which lens do you use for your M200? I just picked one up for streaming.
I already had a canon camera that didn't have clean HDMI, and as soon as I got the email from canon about this software I was SO HAPPY!
Duff so on the software the video output is clean and you can still use autofocus?
Duff also how long thill the battery dies
@@RAIDStrickshotter Yep the signal is super clean and autofocus works like a charm! The only problem is that since it's in beta, it isn't fully optimized and it can be a little choppy at times, which Harris already detailed.
@@RAIDStrickshotter And about the battery life, it really depends on what camera model you have and how new your battery is, but my EOS Rebel T7 can last for several hours with no problem.
Hi Duff, Just a rapid question as I'm on a Mac and the software is not available yet (hope this will be very soon !!). Can you tell me if while you're using this new piece of software you have the ability to adjust the camera settings (ie. shutter speed, ISO and, aperture) in real time ? I'm using right now a Canon M50 as my webcam, using "Camera Live" and "CamTwist", and my main problem is to control the camera settings. Despite I'm on Manual mode on my camera, the flipscreen is turned off when activating "Camera live" and I can't adjust the settings if my light is changing (I got a large window next to me, and sometimes, the weather gets cloudy, and my picture turns to dark because of the camera setting beeing fixed by the manual mode !)
If the Canon software give the ability to control the camera settings in real time .. that would be a HUUUUUGE deal !
I love my Nikon DSLR for still images, but they do seem to be happily inept when it comes to video.
Harris! Loving the music on Spotify! Great thinking! Great sound! Really helping keep my stream interesting! Today while listening I noticed a few songs that cut off about 1 minute before the end of the song! Just wanted to bring it to your attention! Thank you so much for making music and streaming mesh so well!
Thank you! This opened my eyes to the differences in resolution and frame rate between a USB connection and an HDMI capture card. Excellent.
Watched til the end and saw you are using the EF-M 22mm F2 lens. Thank you! (Sorry for all the comments)
Is that a good lans for m200
@Sweener i though sigma 16mm f1.4 was the best
I saw my Camera listed and all I am going to say is. game changer. Thank you so much for this amazing update.
I bought my Canon M50 on sale probably about the same time this video came out. I just started streaming last month and have been looking into streaming camera recommendations. This video was seriously encouraging.
Good video, on breaking down which specific lenses you use. Very much appreciated!
so this might solve issues with the lack of camlink availability for the time being, and give you a good vlog cam as well. Hopefully resolution and framerate issues are fixed, but this seems like a good step forward. Maybe Canon eventually moves into the straight webcam space now?
I doubt it, since they have fairly cheap cameras with interchangeable lenses that can double as a webcam. Just get a nice lens with a cheap body.
i still can't get used to "every Monday, Wednesday, Saturday"
Pinstryp what you mean you can’t get used to it?
@@slickspidey Used to be Monday, Wednesday, Friday back in my day.
SAME "MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY"
Thanks for this video! My wife and I just tested this with an EOS 5D Mk ii (6D Mk ii software as nothing for 5D ii yet) using A/V out (not HDMI) and it works great, even at 1080 60 FPS. Will be purchasing HDMI out cable for the camera to see how it goes.
Harris! Just swinging by to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have a 550d and I've been running the usual EOS utility-obs window capture route to make it work, it was a HUGE pain, and took a solid 20- 25% of my CPU to run. Choked my single PC setup to a point where it was just not feasible for me. Lucky for me, your video popped up on my feed, and now I'm directly running my 550d straight to OBS. Love ya!
Heads up to everyone who's running old Canon cameras: The beta software WORKS! Just download the driver closest to your model, and hope it turns on!
You can almost do this direct with newer Sony’s, via their software ‘Imaging Edge’. It is a window cap of their utility, which can be cropped, but nonetheless can connect with only USB. They have a list of compatible devices on the site.
But no sound at all....

No, the USB feed has poor quality. It’s a shame to reduce quality at the source like that. It’s ok if you don’t have a capture card. But if you do, you can even get 4K24
@@rafbass Yeah the canon webcam utility is 520p and disconnects every 10 seconds or so, it's bad.
Just getting into streaming, so I've been binge watching your content today. But I just so happened to have picked up a Canon m50 a few months ago, but WOW, to hear you say the set up I run is what you recommend...it's amazing. Thanks so much.
I was looking for a camlink for soo long. I am happy I waited a while for this to come out. Can confirm it works flawlessly with OBS, Thanks Harris!
I have an m50 and I love it! I would highly recommend the refurbished option available from canon. Picked mine up with a lens for 480
I also use the M50, but when ever I use the Capture Card, my camera seems to freeze after some time
How do you get around the 30 min Timer?

Harris!!! This is such great news! I’ve been shopping for a Camlink (to no avail) so I can use my DSLR to stream with but this is such welcome news!
With the 6D Mark II not having clean HDMI, this is amazing for me who got this camera as a hand-me-down.
When i saw my camera on there the canon 4000d/ Eos Rebel T100 i almost cried as ive been trying to connect it to the out-dated canon utilities which doesn't work in my case im so glad canon is finally taking action on this :D
is the 4000d the same as the rebel T100. I am new to all this camera stuff btw but if it is does that mean i can use the rebel t100 on the list?
But there’s a problem for continuous use on 4000d. BATTERY! Even if you go for a external power adapter, there is no way to close the battery door and thus, that can’t be used. You need to drill a hole for that. :(
"Nikon doesn't even know it exists"
PENTAX: 'Am I a joke to you?'
Harris doesn't even know Pentax exists :D
Did you ever see the "quality" Pentax have in video? They don't exist in the video realm.
I Have a K5 BTW.
My pops got an EOS 7D way back in college when doing his multimedia degree and needed it for filming and photography. Now it's collecting dust because my dad moved on to smartphones because apparently they 1upped the camera and the 7D is now collecting dust. Finding out about this makes me wanna bring back that hand-me-down mindset my dad gave me with pc builds when growing up and actually make use of this.
That’s amazing! They have had the utility software out for a while but it’s good to see how they are making a fully adaptable camera for that
Literally was just today looking at a camcorder since this webcam shortage has people charging 200$ for a c920 or waiting over a month + to ship
A5100, dummy battery, and a camlink will run you a pretty penny compared to a $200 C920 and some wait time lol
@@FiSHY4D you are not the only one who wants a camlink. They are sold out everywere here in Europe.

I was only able to get the white version of the newly released Logitech webcam, brand new. I had to order directly from the Logitech website but I got it in about a week. That camera was not my first choice but it was the only one I could find new without price gouging. I already have Canon cameras but using a capture card and all the wiring, etc is a real hassle. I'm a teacher so I need to set up and tear down often right now. I NEEDED a webcam so I bought that one. Too bad they didn't roll this Canon beta out to Macs. I was a really excited about it when I read an article announcing this early this morning but then of course I read the fine print. 😬

Can you do an Update on this please, now that it has been out a while.

lmaoooo the perfect emoji combination for that joke
I purchased the Avermedia Lite a week ago to get my SL2 working as a webcam and now its come I'm going to send it back! The EOS Webcam utility has no latency using OBS where as the aver media had to be set to 700ms to match the audio. Also the quality is no different at all and much better than my C920 i had been using. This is brilliant!!
I use a CamLink on an EOS-R and just the fact that this supports output from the USB-C port is enough for me. The HDMI-mini port is very touchy and I'm glad to see them come out with this. Hopefully they release it for Mac as I use my EOS-R for video calls and things outside of gaming on a PC.
Canon G7X Mark iii still has some major overheating issues.
I heard video autofocus is the problem and the reason many people won't choose it.
Some things to bear in mind; with a capture card/camlink the added hardware is doing the rendering. With an app it's your CPU and it can hit HARD. I used to simply screencapture the normal EOS app and it took up *20%* of my 6600k's CPU alone! So you would only want to go with a software solution if you have a beefy CPU and if you can afford a beefy CPU, chances are you can afford a camlink anyway.
Another thing to bear in mind, because it's software based a lot more data is being pulled through the USB hub (a hub isn't always external, EG. the USB ports on the front of your PC is a separate hub to the ones at the back). A USB hub can only handle so much data - that's one of the reason you're frequently advised to have only one video device in one hub at a time otherwise they bottleneck and render the other ports useless (in laymen's terms)
Source: me, I work in IT tech, i'm also a streamer using a Canon 80d and a camlink that has extensively tested this (to see if it was worth saving £120 on a camlink).
Hope this helps with folks making purchase decisions!
Oh and if you do go with a camlink by the way; still avoid canon. I love my 80d, but their "clean HDMI" is only clean in manual focus. If you put it into auto focus you'll get the focus reticle that can not be removed. Meaning you're limited to manual focus and have to set the focus every time you turn on the camera and depending on the lens you use you won't have much freedom to lean forward/back without becoming blurred.
@@nateman10 Not sure what region you're in but it's currently available on Amazon US and a few online stores in the UK. Depending on where you are it might be worth paying a lil' extra for international shipping. I'm in the UK and sometimes use German Amazon for example.
As i said before I would avoid Canon for streaming. You can't use auto-focus through the HDMI out, unless you want your viewers to see a constant white box around your face. Being limited to manual focus on streams is a pain.
When it comes to how much you spend on a camera, generally as long as it can do 1080 or 4k at 60fps you're fine. The *lens* is what is important. What lens you want varies from person to person, how much space you have to move the camera back/forward and the sort of look you want.
Ultimately it depends on your budget, patience and what literal room you have to play with.
@@nateman10 And don't be afraid to go used with cameras. Photographers take damn good care of their cameras and buying used saves a LOT of money.
Fuji could be interesting I think, they also released software recently for streaming - their in-camera film simulation is legendary, makes some great video. I wonder if a T2 or T3 would work for folks starting out.
On Mac using "Ecamm Live" for streaming this has been working for a year already! My Canon m50 works just fine with a dummy battery and usb-output for video (no sound) - it only works with Ecamm Live though, not as a webcam for Zoom/Skype or OBS
trying the app using my Mac, I cannot see it on OBS ... sad
Make sure you're closed out of the EOS utility app - then because it will stay running in the background - open Activity monitor and quit the process. :) Cheers!
Imagine using a mac
Sony have this function a while back, it's called Imaging Edge Desktop. You can only use it on newer Sony Alpha cameras (A6300 and up) that support display live view. Just fyi for Sony users watching this video.
What about the A5100?
I thought this was just for remote shooting/tethering. Are you sure it can be use the camera as a webcam as well? (live view shooting is not the same as webcam support)
This is exactly the video I was looking for, really well made and exhaustive too. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this! I was just looking into hacked ways of doing this last week. I tried it out with my t2i and it worked perfectly. Haven’t used it for more than a few minutes though- hopefully overheating won’t be an issue.
Just so you know, USB-C isn't automatically "better" than USB 2.0
C refers to the physical connector, and 2.0 refers to the speed/version of the protocol.
There's plenty of devices out there that have a type-c connector but it still only supports USB 2.0 speeds. Folks make sure you do your homework and double check what you're getting.
The Wrong Button So many people don’t understand this really simple distinction.
So true. The Canon sl3 has a USB type-c port, but it is only USB 2.0 Compliant.
Alpha Gaming - Canon cameras don’t over heat.
Canon R5 - watch this...
When making a streaming setup I was THRILLED when I found out this was a thing. Plug it in and BOOM my m50 camera I use for side projects is now my face cam, no camlink required. For people just starting out, this was great. Very cool Cannon, very cool.
I know everyone loves there DSLRs, but this would be an amazing thing for Gopro to do. Imagine being able to use your Gopro as a webcam. They are easy to mount and have buttery smooth video.
Maybe someone can tell why they haven't done it yet? Knockoffs have done it from the start xD
I use my Gopro Hero 7 Black as a secondary webcam (top down perspective) in my live DJ streams. The GoPro has to connect to my Elgato HD60S card first and then OBS Link has to be active and boom! Shows up in OBS Studio as an NDI source on my MAC!

Its interesting how long they took to do this though? shows how these camera companies deliberately hold out on us and charge a lot for their items
Because camera companies make hardware, not software. If camera companies would boost r&d in software development or team with a good software company, things like this wouldn’t seem to take forever for camera companies to catch on to. I wouldn’t call it deliberate, more like “ignorance”.
Holding out to charge more isn’t exclusive to just cameras though. That’s just market in general.

Hopefully, there will be some optimisations in the driver that will enable it to run for longer, but the problem is as you mention in the video, that the camera has to do alot of processing to output the video via USB, and that will create extra heat to dissipate.
Hello Good Sir! I have a question. I primarily record green screen footage via my Logi Brio and Elgato Green Screen. I stream the same way. Dang - I literally just way overpaid for a camlink for my EOS R.
Cody Hughes nah u didn’t look at diff bt the software vs camlink. You can tell
It's ok.... just look at the photo quality
Hey Hughes! Do you know how long the battery last when using through USB C?
@@auxide9623 he might have since Canon's is still a beta software. they rushed in developing this because the current market calls for it.
My boi still talking about his 60fps footage while exporting his vids in 30fps 💯
Thanks for the video. Can't try the new software since I am on a Mac but Camera Live / CamTwist give me that USB-C interface with my Mac for my EOS R. Have also bought a ClonerAlliance Flint 4KP Plus that works well with HDMI and USB-C and tried a Mirabox USB-C Capture Card, 4K as well that allows me to use my EOS R or Sony A7RIII ore Fuji X-T3 for webcams. Elgato's were just too difficult to get or get a good price on.
Downloaded the T6 webcam utility and dug up my EOS T3, OBS does recognize the T3 as a video capture device. Still need to play around with some settings and figure out a few hiccups but nothing major so far. I'm crossing my fingers and hope this works out to bring some new life to my dusty T3.
And soon, that ugly Sparkocam will be dead because of this. 😆
hi thats what iam trying to loose, was about to buy camlink hope mine gets a patch soon
