For those that don’t know if you have the webcam utility on Obs or other apps you can’t use it at the same time on discord, local camera app,Skype etc..
Adam, holy crap!! This is amazing -- thank you so much for the quick heads-up. I am using it happily with the Rebel T6i, which as you said is a reasonably priced option. Works so far with OBS, Zoom, Microsoft Meetings, and WebEx, so I am all set - I'm guessing Discord will be added. Honestly I was super-pissed at myself when I bought the T6i without doing enough homework to realize it couldn't (really) be used as a webcam, and now suddenly Canon has made this possible.
I'm honestly surprised that this is sort of big news since Canon DSLR cameras have basically always been webcams. The Canon EOS Utility software has worked since my T3i was new in 2011 to display the camera live feed on the computer via USB. If you want to use OBS then use the on screen capture for the feed in the EOS Utility software. I use my T3i in Skype, too. Just set Skype for a screen share with the T3i feed full screened. If you have a second monitor then it works even better since you can still use your main screen. It's 9 years old and the quality with a half decent lens looks miles better then basically any modern webcam. I've also used this as a quick and dirty way to get around the recording limit. Sure, the quality isn't super .... but does RUclips compression really care?
Was it 1000ish*600-700 or thereabouts, like in this video? I think that is the "preview" JPEG image the computer can get from the camera, really fast. 30 times per second, I think, with a little luck. I experimented with that using my EOS 7D and EOS 60D, a Linux laptop, and the Gphoto library. I bricked my 7D early on; hammering the camera too hard with spurious commands, I think. Eventually I managed to capture 20-ish images per second, and recode to h.264 on the fly. The preview JPEGs from my camera were 1056x704, and had 4:2:2 colour sub-sampling. This was in 2012, and I wrote it in C, based on snippets of example code, slapped together with gum and ducktape. It never got anywhere near production quality, I did it as a proof of concept.
Please post back how this works. I'm interested in the m50. If you have a channel, I wouldn't minds seeing how you set it up and get it to work. If it is any help, you can get a dummy battery for the m50 to have a longer power life while recording. I've found the research for that one. There are videos to set this up. My next concerns are the clean hdmi issue which I hope this fixes, and duration. If you use an m50 for streaming it needs to record longer than 30 min. I'm hoping that the utility will treat it more like a web cam.
also you can use the m50 without this software and capture card. Install the canon utility software instead, use the live view feature, and then capture the window in obs.
@@duckforceone you gotta stop all the EOS Utility processes for this to work because the EOS utility keeps connected to the camera, not allowing other programs to connect to it.
Decided to try it on my on my 550D (Rebel T2i). Wow it works! Getting 1280x720 resolution with black bars (~1056x710? cropped). Not sure about the frame rate but it's acceptably smooth all things considered . Tried a 3rd party solution for clean usb output years ago never thought I would see something like this from official from Canon. Thanks for the heads up. :D
I clicked the T6i link and it worked perfectly with my T5i, so I'm super happy about that. Immediately ordered an AC adapter for it so I can use it for the video stream of my podcast.
I have Canon EOS 600D, I go to the link, downloaded the " EOS Rebel T6i " webcam utility beta, and it worked. U need to restart ur pc and turn off and on your DSLR. and do as the video shows in obs.
Most cameras use a protocol called PTP, which also includes a MJPEG "preview" stream which is what you see in the video here (hence the weird resolution). The USB2.0 bandwidth only allows for max 1080p 30fps in MJPEG, and 720p 60fps. Now most 1080p USB2.0 cameras use built in h264 compression to achieve an OK picture quality on the USB2.0 bandwith as MJPEG is quite inefficient. So no, you will probably not see 1080p 60fps on the USB2.0 link from a Canon camera. I`ve been using my old 550D as a webcam for years, and by using gphoto2 combined with Gstreamer you can basically turn any DSLR or point and shoot camera into a webcam (including Sony, Nikon etc) on Windows, Linux and even macOS (with some quirks)
You know, I sometimes wonder if their researchers/designers ever use their product and consider searching the many uses on youtube. Think about it, w/ half the information floating around good/bad, feedback/reviews, they'd be able to work out a really marketable product that is useful to everyone. Imagine if a youtuber worked on product design. You'd have a really nice camera for all around work. I figured out why they don't have the mic working yet in beta. If they are focusing on stream use, they know most creators use a higher quality mic.
Just one tip you may have seen by now. It's the "Windows 10 Store app" version of Skype which does not see EOS Webcam Utility Beta. However, go into your browser and download the "Skype for Desktop" app and it works flawlessly. As for frame drops and lag, I haven't had any at all with an EOS M50 in Skype for Desktop. I had a Skype call which lasted well over an hour and it was as smooth as silk. As for audio, I just plugged my mic into my laptop instead of my camera, so not too much of a hassle.
Something that every camera and phone with a camera should have had since 2012. I guess getting to the moon and launching a Tesla into space is much easier. Thanks Canon! Finally, a decent 2020 style progress with R5 and this:) Hopefully no more Elgato Cam Link and SparkoCam workarounds.
I just saw the Canon video and you were the next recommended video. I just installed the software and need to reboot but I'm really excited. This is just the beta so we will definitely see some updates that will fix some of the issues. As for the mic support most of us use either our headset or better mic. Camera mics are notoriously bad anyway but passing through the signal from the mic input on the camera might come in an eventual update. Can't wait to see the future improvements in the software.
thanks so much a clear and thorough explanation - 1/ does this work only on USB or also with HDMI ? 2/ Does the camera auto shut down after 29 minutes when the utility is installed?
be aware that if you have both the webcam utility and the EOS Utility installed, when you plug in the camera, the EOS Utility will launch. When this launches, the webcam utility won't work. you have to close the EOS Utility for the webcam utility will work.

Wow, Canon's response to Blackmagic for adding P4k/P6k camera control to it's $295 ATEM mini and $595 ATEM mini pro. In the past 2 months I snapped up used Canon SL3, used Sony RX0, and new Elgato HD60+, and new ATEM mini to do multi-cam piano teaching setup. The $300 ATEM mini is insane, allowing remote control of my Blackmagic P4k or p6k camera, settings, real-time color grading, audio eq., noise gate, compression, and limiting; keying, chroma processing, PIP, lower thirds etc overlays, fancy transitions. The pro steps up adding record deck functionality, full multicam monitoring, and live streaming. What OBS does on your desktop in a little panel with hardware support allowing just an ultralight laptop to run for truly light remotes. The only feature missing from big bucks broadcast ATEMs are SDI and talkback, and those aren't needed for low budget solo jobs. Competition is good, and Canon is getting relevant again, otherwise I'd be buying only Blackmagic and Sony mirrorless cameras for web video. Maybe even the Blackmagic pocket 6k, which just got dropped $500 in price, if you can find one! Mini ATEMs have been sold out for weeks too. I would have bought a used Sony a5100, but it lacks a mic in port needed for best audio/video sync.
I keep seeing stuff about this and was thinking in my head "this isn't new" but it does appear Canon finally packaged the EOS live view utility into an easier to use format. Pretty neat. Let's see that sparkocam vid :)
hey everyone, for those of you who are just getting the EOS Webcam Utility Beta logo, the solution is that the regular EOS Utility can't be running at all, as they seem to interfere with each other ... if you don't seem to have the EOS Utility window open, then it must be running in the background, so go to the notification area / system tray & right-click on the application, then "Quit"
Dont be a moron. Canon literally released this so that people working from home in the pandemic that do not have a webcam otherwise can try and use this if they have one. This beta was not intended for full time use.
@@elissitdesign Negative. Bandwidth of USB 2.0 is 480 Mbit/s. That is MORE than enough bandwidth for streaming. Streaming requires less than 10 Mbit/s. I have OBS Camera iOS App and connection using USB 2.0 from my phone is extremely smooth with plenty of bandwidth.
@@rexjuggler19 While yes, the USB connection MIGHT be fast enough, you are making very big technical mistakes. USB 2.0 speed is 480 Mbps not MB/s. 480 Mbps means 60 MB/s. And while this is plenty, most USB devices can't communicate at that speed. Most top at 10-15 MB/s. The biggest problem is that the video stream coming over USB may not be compressed. If it is uncompressed, bitrates for 1080p can easly get over the speed that usb 2.0 provides. All HD webcams use compression to be able to push 1080p over USB 2.0. I don't think Canon would cripple their software not to allow higher resolutions (not that they don't cripple their cameras). The hardware limitation is the problem here. Also, they can't implement compression unless they make a firmware update for the cameras and I doubt they will. Your iPhone compresses the stream. The videos you watch on RUclips and Twitch are also compressed. This is way those work over 10MB/s connections at very high resolutions such as 4K.

Question: my canon EOS m6 mkii automatically shuts off the screen after 30m unless I touch something on it and there seems to be no way to disable this setting. I am currently connecting to my pc with a camlink. Does this approach you shared get around the problem I am having?
*hears news about something cool coming down the pipe for streaming. Opens RUclips* Yep, Epos is covering it! Also, I would imagine you could use the OBS virtual cam plug-in to output to Skype if you find that worth the trouble.
I just did a setup for a friend doing online piano lessons. Used a used Sony RX0 over the keyboard, Blackmagic Pocket 4k for a side view and a Blackmagic ATEM mini switcher, where she can also select her ipad pro as a video source with the lightning to HDMI adapter. External mics were wired into the cameras so audio and video delays matched. The ATEM mini has new camera control, color correction, audio processing, and PIP/chroma etc. effects plus looks like a web cam. Sadly, it's out of stock everywhere, but dumb HDMI video switchers may work for some people who just want to switch cameras and use OBS for the processing. I love the RX0 - it's a cool camera without a market until now - HDMI web cam (watch heat issues. May need to disable wifi to stay cool).
Yup, works on my T3i too... This tool uses the EOS SDK, which has a huge supported cam list, so I bet most canon dslr will work, even the old ones. They're not on the list because they're old, not because they'll not work.
Yeah, works just fine on 700D, ALTHOUGH feed has a frame that needs to be cropped down, Sparkocam (paid, and much older alternative) sends pre-cropped 16:9 video by default.
MechanicallyDev is there different versions of the utility depending on the camera? If so, what version of the utility do you get the T3i working with? Thanks.
It works on Skype, but only on the version from their website, not from Microsoft Store. It has a different UI. Discord fires the shutter mirror on and off continuously.

Get it from CNET. They're hosting a copy which seems to work for every camera listed (it's an exact rip of the software on Canons website). The reason for the outage at the moment is the major ransomware attack that they have just suffered. Hope you get it up and working for your next Zoom meetings! I wish the people at Nikon were as much as creative when it comes to expend the capabilities of their cameras but they seem to have developed a real "beef" against innovation in the past 10 years...
Canon has been resisting innovation and cannibalizing its cinema camera line for years, crippling even new products, especially lower end ones. Dribbling out new features slowly for years has driven even the most loyal customers away, mostly to Sony, with great features, performance, glass, and utilities like free Capture One light.

I was able to make it work by what someone said in one of these videos... making the resolution at 640 @30fps. Now it's compatible with the (old) laptop webcam.... Maybe they have to match, or be close in OBS. He said 720 or lower should work.... I'm still using the Canon Webcam program, it turns out.... That's great.

It never got anywhere near production quality, I did it as a proof of concept.
yeah but it was pretty low quality before.. something like 360p max, right?
I just got an m50 and was really dreading purchasing a capture card so this is great! Thanks for sharing.
@@miniblaze4634 i tried installing it and using the m50... doesn't seem to work.
also you can use the m50 without this software and capture card. Install the canon utility software instead, use the live view feature, and then capture the window in obs.
@@duckforceone you gotta stop all the EOS Utility processes for this to work because the EOS utility keeps connected to the camera, not allowing other programs to connect to it.
doesn't work with zoom
I’ve seen a lot of articles say the Canon 2000D is useable? It’s not in the list so is it worth trying to set up?
Decided to try it on my on my 550D (Rebel T2i). Wow it works! Getting 1280x720 resolution with black bars (~1056x710? cropped). Not sure about the frame rate but it's acceptably smooth all things considered . Tried a 3rd party solution for clean usb output years ago never thought I would see something like this from official from Canon. Thanks for the heads up. :D
I clicked the T6i link and it worked perfectly with my T5i, so I'm super happy about that. Immediately ordered an AC adapter for it so I can use it for the video stream of my podcast.
Will there be a difference recording it via OBS? Or Quicktime as to recording it direct From the Camera itself? Thanks man.
I have Canon EOS 600D, I go to the link, downloaded the " EOS Rebel T6i " webcam utility beta, and it worked. U need to restart ur pc and turn off and on your DSLR. and do
as the video shows in obs.
How about the battery of the camera? If you stream or record a video it will consume a lot from battery. Do you have a solution for that ?
@@Rabe3ooh check for dummy batteries in amazon or so on. And check the name for example mine is 600D. So check for Lp-E8 dummy battery
Z Creator thanks alot dude , mine is 600d , I didnt know that there is such a thing 😄 , I will use it definitely.
It's kind of crazy that no one thought to do this until now, especially since Sony, Canon, and Nikon all have live view over USB....
A video about Sparko cam would be awesome! Hope Canon keeps updating this.
Correction: This is working on Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

Wonder what resolution it can support with usb3..
576p, the newest version of the utility works in the Camera App but it's still horrible.
This does work on the older Canon DSLR's btw. I'm using it with my T2i for streaming, works pretty well.
thanks so much a clear and thorough explanation - 1/ does this work only on USB or also with HDMI ? 2/ Does the camera auto shut down after 29 minutes when the utility is installed?

What about the battery life of your camera using this method?
U should always use a dedicated battery power supply instead of relying on batteries when u live stream.
Get DC coupler that fits your camera :)
Ah yes, finally... I can use my 1.5K device as a sub 720p stuttery webcam, thanks god
You can thank USB 2.0 for that. It’s a bandwidth issue.
Stop whining bitch. I bet you don't even own a camera. What a fucking crybaby.
How fast does your battery die while using it?
I've got a 80d and it's not working with obs and zoom, it recognize the eos web cam app, I see the inscription of the eos app on obs or zoom but can not capture the image. I can not see what the camera is capturing...

Make sure that your cameras wifi connection is set to disabled, or else the camera isnt going to be detected on your computer.
Opens RUclips*
Yep, Epos is covering it!
Also, I would imagine you could use the OBS virtual cam plug-in to output to Skype if you find that worth the trouble.
And to Discord
Perfect timing! A friend recently asked me to give him a hand on setting up an online teaching setup. Will recommend this channel

I was shopping for a video capture and ran into this. Thanks dude 👍🏻
Works perfectly with a T1i, T3, T3i and T4i. From the smoothest to the slowest, (27, 14, 11 and 10 fps).

It worked for a minute with my EOS 70D (they updated the supported camera list since this video came out).. but then stopped.
Does it make a difference if I have the canon 250d not the rebel sl3 because technically they are the same camera

It works well with my T4i/650D and also with other non listed camera models! If the EOS Utility is running, you have to close it.
OK BUT THE HALO BACKGROUND! Also, I see some comments saying it worked with their older models. Which should I run for the EOS 70D?
