The problem is that many ppl don't realise that Dave's early sound and even thrash itself is heavily ifluenced by the sound of hardcore punk like Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains etc. many of which have unconventional singing.

When it comes to solos, there are two, I'd give the credit of being prime examples of metal solos: Painkiller from Judas Priest, and Tornado of Souls of Megadeth. Back then as a kid, I used to say: you can "fly" with the guitars. I guess this is what Shred meant with: "follow the chord progression". You get this inevitable feeling of being drawn towards the song, something grabbing you and pushing you forward. Anyways: Tornado of souls most definitely IS one of the greatest metal songs of all time (I guess it was more of a rhetorical question anyways ;) )!

  • @CynHicks

Ive been saying this for decades. Lol......I was humbled when I started to learn the solo. I thought it would be hard but it was really hard. It's so graceful. Theres nothing robotic about it. Its like first you have to memorize it. Then practice the challenging parts for a bit. There are several. THEN in order to get it to sound right you have to be feeling it in full speed while playing it. Hard to explain but humbling for any shredder. One thing is he pulls on notes and certain bends are pulled but then smoothly drawn. The slide ins to pulls and bends. It's just so hard to replicate all the way through. That last bit, for me anyway, is just weird. It's backwards in my mind.
Lucretia's solo is close IMO. I dont count solo albums in this though. Dragons Kiss had a couple that are even better. I never got it down BTW. Gave up. Did my own thing. Lol

You're right about his voice, it's his UN-proficiency in vocals that makes it so interesting. Technical standpoint- everything is off. Spacing himself, saving energy and breath, intonation, its fascinating to listen to their first record because this guy just GOES for it on "Last Rites". It's like the lyrics line per line are so short but Dave is nearly machine-gunning them out-
"Your body's empty now, as I hold you/Now you're gone I miss you, but I told you."

The solo itself is impressive. it's more impressive when you consider it was done in a single take. During the recording of R.I.P. Marty had a nerve injury in his arm that could if aggravated cause permanent damage. Marty's Doctor said he shouldn't play. Knowing Marty was going to play anyways she told him to just do everything in one take. So Mary sat down listened to rhythm track behind the solo. It was a small pavillion and I could see them from really close!! Dave singing and riffing is just inhuman!! Like you say about James! But this song.... is for me one of the best metal songs ever!! Do people even realize the work of art that this is?! And Dave's melodic counterpart is obviously Marty, and his work on this solo might impress Mozart! The eye of the tornado for me is that moment when you're locked into a struggle with an athlete who is physically equal and it becomes a battle of will power. Time slows down, keys modulate, drums (heart) goes double time. My mind and body would separate. I was safe in the eye of the tornado and in that state I would become more than I was. I wish that more people would watch something like this so they can realize that it's not just an opinion of what's good or bad but the bottom line is that metal is NOT a bunch of noise and takes a lot of talent and practice to write and perform. Sure pop can churn out the same plain uninspired bullshit over and over but it's music like this that is where it's at. For years I've told these close minded simpletons on this planet that Beethoven Bach Mozart were the "metal" of thier day and today's metal is the closest we have to classical. I've only been met with confused looks and responses like "WTF metal is a bunch of non talent noise and has nothing to do with classical music" Thank you so much for validating what some of us have known all along. Great stuff man. I’ll always acknowledge the iconic guitar solo in this song. But I’d argue that Holy Wars...The Punishment Is Due is the greatest metal song.....well at least by Megadeth for sure.
From the odd unique choice of intro riffs, along with the drum fills matching along builds up to one crazy fast main riff that flows smoothly into an almost blue-like thrashing verse riff. No chorus really, which is definitely a metal genre choice. And do I need to talk about Marty’s acoustics into potentially Mustaine’s “heaviest” riff which then is followed by one of the most eargasmic (if that’s a word) guitar riffs of all time. Battling guitar solos from both Friedman and Mustaine before and epic return to an intensified main riff of the song to close it out.
So much love for Holy Wars and the entire Rust In Peace album.

Peace Sells, Rust in Peace, and Countdown to Extinction are my three favorite Megadeth albums. What set Countdown apart was Mustaine's demand for perfection in the recording studio. He wanted Nick and Dave E to be in perfect sync, and he and Marty just absolutely killed their guitar parts.
With that said, one of my all time favorite guitar solos is from Country Girl on Sabbath's Mob Rules album. Iommi's solo was short, precise, and beautiful. He didn't overdo it. He put in exactly how many notes he needed to put in to make the solo, IMO, perfect.

For a great example of simply following the chord progression to create a moving and powerful solo, without even needing to get into sustained 32nd-note runs and blistering sweeps and such, I like to reference Alex Skolnick's solo in Testament's ballad "Return to Serenity". Because of the slower pace, you can easily pick out his scale changes and mode shifts as the background rhythm by the amazing-in-his-own-right Eric Peterson progresses through the cords.

For a long time this used to be my favorite song from them. I think I wore it out though from listening to it SO MANY times. Now, my favorite song from RiP might be Holy Wars...maybe even Lucretia.
2:30 - "How did he learn to sing?"
It's funny because I was wondering the same thing since in the early days he wasn't even a singer. They just couldn't find the right guy, so he said "screw it, I'll sing"...Well, I think he probably sang some throughout his whole life because even on their first album his voice actually sounded good, almost trained, at times.
Which brings me to the song, "Looking Down The Cross", my favorite off the debut album. I only recently discovered that song despite being a MD fan for many years. I'm a little ashamed it took me so long to actually listen to it. Freakin blew me away. I'm pretty sure I heard Dave say somewhere that he's had that song in his back pocket since his days in 'Panic', before Metallica.
Being a guitar player, I am a huge fan of Marty Friedman's exotic style... but I think I prefer Chris Poland's amazingly fluid and tight lead style. The first few minutes of 'Good Mourning/Black Friday' ('Good Mourning') is the coolest guitar intro ever. Dave's impressive as hell clean guitar chords, and Chris' lead, utilizing that whammy bar making that guitar weep...it's like guitar heaven.
Hey man, make a video about Good Mourning/Black Friday.😁🤞
I'm sure there are plenty of Megadeth fans who have never even heard it. 🤔

Love Megadeth and will give them 2nd place any day of the week, but Pantera, in particular the guitar rhythms and solos by Dimebag, are the greatest in metal music in my opinion. I was already enthralled by Cowboys From Hell alongside the birth of grunge in 1991, but when MTV’s Headbangers Ball used snippets from their follow up album, Vulgar Display Of Power, in 1992, I knew I would be hooked on Pantera for life.
Domination, Cemetery Gates, This Love, A New Level, etc. could all be considered the greatest metal song for me.
