The 'Making of' mini documentary about Youthanasia is pretty good too. They took it so seriously they hired a french vocal coach just for Mustaine would get the 4 french lines in the song spot on.
And a random fact about 'Addicted to Chaos'. I saw Megadeth live in the Endgame/Rust in Peace anniversary tour in Caracas in 2010 and someone handed Dave Mustaine a Venezuela Youthanasia themed flag with 'Venezuela is Addicted to Chaos on it' and Dave looked kinda perplexed when he held it up.
Although something probably went wrong backstage or they were treated poorly by the promoter because they went from playing Venezuela 2x in 2 years to saying they wouldn't return, and Mustaine - how had written a nice blog about every stop in Megadeth's Latin American tour - went radio silent after that stop.
Apologies, Andriy if this was a pointless comment.

The thing with Megadeth's transition is, that if they didn't try so hard to compete with Metallica, they could've had a second RIP. I love CTE and Youthanasia, but I feel like the band needed one more perfect Thrash album, considering the previous additions just left things to be desired, especially SFSGSW and KIMB. But Dave states in his biography that they wanted to compete with Metallica, and also the whole band wanted a more commercial approach for the financial part of things, so it didn't seem like they had any intentions of sticking to the RIP sound. Either way, the result was 2 awesome albums, with little to none bad songs, which unfortunately did not get played live nearly enough as they should have been.
PS: "Addicted To Chaos" is probably my favourite song from Youthanasia too and it's a damn shame it's never been played live...

  • @WjeszakSmierdzi

Polish TSA recorded every of its 80s and 90s albums with the "live" method, I wouldn't expect it was that archaic even at the start of the 80s... though they used 16-tape recorder perhaps for mixing and of course recorded the solos and vocals separately.
Killing Road - my favorite and best song on the Youthanasia, it can compare only with A Tout Le Monde.

Undoubtedly their best rendition of the song performed live. Dave nailed the vocals on it as it was of course played in front a national audience on the Late Show. And you’re right, Paul owned that harmonica outro. Menza’s drumming stands out and of course Dave because he absolutely nailed the vocals for that performance.

I completly agree with you, those tripples are very tricky. Especially when playing it together with another guitarist. I think you can hear it in the beginning of the version on the The Letterman Show, that the intro-part isn't entirely tight, just showing how tricky it can be, even for profesional musicians. The song remains my favorite on the album, as well as the solo; which I just love :)

Yo, my old band recorded an EP years ago. A local private school had a fully tricked out recording studio at which my friend was the engineer. He had a key and the code to the alarm. He made up a cover story about "recalibrating" a bunch of the audio equipment and basically let us record for an entire weekend for almost no money.
We did dozens of takes of each song (there were only six songs on the EP). There was probably no need to go to that extent, but ultimately, we _were_ able to choose the best versions.
Forty two takes is a damn lot, though😅

but one thing metallica and megadeth do not have in common: megadeth has never been without its two primary song writers. all megadeth is authentic megadeth, whereas metallica spent many years trying to sound like the original four horsemen.

2:21 I would also add the album Slave to the Grind by Skid Row, released in '91. The first metal album to hit number 1 on billboard 200, even before The Black Album came out.

Risk was made because Marty Friedman wanted to write slower music. So, Dave Mustaine went with it and worked with the concept. Later, Marty would leave the band because of creative differences (wanting to play less "heavy" music) and adopt J-rock.
Youthanasia was Megadeth's attempt to reproduce the hard Deep sound from the black album. They continued that sound into the Cryptic Writings album, which was a smash radio hit.
Literally in the USA, Cryptic Writings was played on the radio with the same air time that Metallica's Black album once had in the earlier 90's.
    I lived through it.

2:34 it was a good time for thrash bands wanting to cash in while not pissing off their older fans, they just had to sand the edges a little bit (i.e. shorter songs, a little bit more singing and less yelling, and replace crazy shredding with singable solos).

It seems crazy that a professional band could actually record all the backing trax together at same time. That would never happen today.Maybe when playing everything at the same time like a band is respectable and honest and sounds like a real fucking band.

The bassist had a bit of a riff hiccup in one of the songs. Can you identify which one?
Also, on the casset tape version, there use to be tambourines in some of the songs.

A agree with MANY points, here - altho Countdown was great and Youth has always been my fave by them, another Rust In Peace woulda been really awesome and it's something that I have wished for, in the past..... Also, yeah, I definitely preferred Dave's vocals on Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings, too, for that matter

My favorite song on the album! The riff is so badass and the dissonant chorus is awesome. After Youthanasia i haven't cared much for Megadeth but they had a good run from 1985-1994.

I cannot imagine how it would take 42 takes unless they kept changing the parts. Maybe there was a lot of stuff cout out, as you see a conversation about songs being too long and needing to be cut. I learned this song when it came out, and it was a breeze compared to almost everything ever released by Megadeth.

This series are too damn good. What about going into Motörhead maybe? You analyze bands albums good. And another idea. What if you analyze some genre? Like what happened to Thrash in the 90s? What if Faith No More never published an album and Alternative Metal never really started in 1985? What would've been in the 90s maybe Grunge will be postponed to late 90's. I love the videos with your theories and stories. Keep them coming brother.
