  • In this video, I listen to Megadeth's "Wake Up Dead", from the album, "Peace Sells But Who's Buying?" Is it Megadeth's best track? And furthermore, is Dave Mustaine really a better song writer than James Hetfield? Inside the video I analyze the riffs with scales and key signatures so that you can steal Dave's ideas muhahaha.

To me, 'Good Mourning / Black Friday' is the best song on PSBWB. After that you have My Last words shortly followed by Wake Up Dead. But obviously, this song is extremely iconic in terms of Megadeth, and the last riff in the song at 3:02 in the song itself, the groovy one to the last solo is one of my favourites on this whole album and Megadeth in general. It's just so extremely good yet simple and I just can't stop myself from headbanging when it starts.

This is definitely Megadeth's best album, and I know Rust in Peace is their most popular. On Peace Sells those guys were on fire, they were pissed and sounded like it. The leads of Chris Poland are inimitable, the vocals of Dave Mustaine were full of venom while the rhythmic section kept everything solid. The number of great riffs on this album is amazing, too. I'd vote for "Good Mourning/Black Friday" or "Devil's Island" for the best track off this record.

My only problem is with the set list in the last ten years. I've heard the classics so many times, I would rather them play new material or songs they don't play like Breakpoint, Go to Hell, New World Order, Diadems, Architecture of Agression, Captive Honor, etc. They seem to play a set with the classics to appeal to those seeing them for nostalgia purposes. They play their most known songs, because the audience is likely to have heard it. I still love them, but I wish they would mix it up.

Bad omen is so underrated, chris polands solo is a thing of beauty and then dave comes with a crazy solo later on. Definitely one of the hardest songs to play on the album

Chris Poland was absolutely monstrous on this album.
My pick for best track would be from the same album: Good mourning/Black friday - still sounds incredible to my ears

What’s crazy for the leads In the studio Chris used a fender twin with a rockman distortion headphone amp. All his bc rich guitar and a Gibson les Paul for rhythm tracks. Chris definitely set a standard for lead playing then came Jeff then the infamous marty friedman

Funny that I stumbled on this video, as I'm currently listening to "Thirteen" for the first time and loving it. Never heard it before but it's sooo good. My God, Shawn Drover is a monster on the drums they sound so freaking good. Hats off to the Recording Engineer on "Thirteen" as the sound on this album is amazing. Guns, Drugs, and Money has a great groove to it, my favorite so far. Will definitely crank this album in the car. As for "Wake Up Dead"....its a killer song for sure. Funny how each song speaks to us in a way that its individually valued and appreciated. Peace Sells is my current favorite song on that album, the vocals are killer and the guitar riffs are killer all through but at 1:38 on the track...those riffs are killer. What a great album Peace Sells...is.

Something ive noticed when learning my favorite Megadeth songs/parts/solos is Dave would often use some weird keys during his solos and bridge/pre solo parts like one of my favorite songs "Take No Prisoners" the bridge part has these really odd placements that when you play it out slowly it sounds like hes hitting a bunch off key frets that doesnt fit but once you speed it up it sounds fine like the album but there just akaward to try and play fast and seamlessly like Dave plays it, same thing for Chris Poland's solos if you play it slow it sounds like half fitting the other half sounds off key but once you speed it up (which is hard as hell) it sounds fine. Something ive noticed covering some of my favorite Megadeth tunes

    Shred,
I think Holy Wars is Megedeth's magnum opus with an honorable .entire given to The Conjuring.
If you ever have the chance, check out the 5.1 mix of Peace Sells (DVD Audio)...you can hear so many things originally buried in the original mix.
    Cheers,
    Brent

A lot of metal in general is in em, apparently because e is the lowest note on the guitar, so you can chug along on the open e string or stick it in between other parts of the riff easily. (Eg metallica)
But megadeth really likes f#m because (i think) while it is not as low and ‘heavy’, it gives you access to the 7th note of the scale (e) with the open string and the low root (f#) on the 2nd fret. So you can make riffs that use the strong 7th to 1 resolution easily while keeping the notes deep and palm muted on the 6th string.
This is used in this song, in polaris, in kick the chair, black friday, conjuring, lots of their songs.
also works with bm, using the 7th a and root b on the 5th string (tornado, vortex, etc).
This also makes the minor 3rd the open string one string up from the root. So again you can do 3-7-root switches or others (eg, 4-3-root-7-root) that are very common in hard rock/metal quickly and easily.
Maybe it is obvious but I remember when I realized this while pouring over my megadeth tabs in high school wondering why they kept using this odd f# key

I love this track to Deth. 😉 In fact this song got me addicted to Megadeths music. It started with an interview of Dave explaining the spider chord used in the song Ride the lightning, which was used in his previous band. And he used the same spider chord in this song. So I listened to this track and man, i got hooked. I compose music too, and songwriting changes immensely if you listen to their music.🤘🏼

My favorites are The Conjuring, Black Friday, Wake Up Dead, 5 Magics, and Holy Wars all of which I can play. Wake Up Dead is a masterpiece a good song to open with. I know everything from the 1st 4 albums except Lucretia still working on that, but you start to forget little things when you get to that many songs.

I think if you focus around the same era of Megadeth with the same lineup, In My Darkest Hour is a deeper track and my favourite. If you jump to the iconic Rust in Peace or Countdown to Exctinction, it's hard to pick a favorite. You can pick so many things based on the mood you're in.

When I heard this for the first time, I was instantly a Megadeth fan. This song just kills. The tempo shifts...the exotic soloing...those fucking RIFFS. That stomping end riff is still one of the most unique things ever. There's just something about the tightness and presentation of it. So good.
