Personally, I do think the solo is great, but to me it is boring because it is based on conventional western classical scales. You know when the solo sounds refined that it's Marty. Dave's solos are sometimes dischordant and non-scalar/raw (which is prefer; I would really prefer soloists sound like holdsworth). This is still my facourite Megadeth song and among my favourite metal songs primarily because of the land-of-opportunities bit. That, along with the harmonics in the intro is what make this song a timeless classic to me.
This is the true answer, personally I'd think only payed content and donations will soon be the new earning meta on YT. These money hungry psychos will run their platform into the ground with a smile, judging by the past 10 years of their actions. 😂@@evil_din
In fact I have always thought of it more as heavy metal than thrash (and I take a lot of crap for that) because it is so technical and not as "heavy" as a lot of true thrash. To me it was a cross-over from their true thrash phase to their heavy metal phase that started with CTE.
Most people would easily point to this solo as one of the best guitar solos of all time and for good reason: One take, mostly improvised, just shows what Friedman is all about
I mean, I saw this live in '91. But man, check Acid Rain-Live in LA by Liquid Tension Experiment. It's an even crazier solo, and 3 minutes long ( the solo that is).
@@jima6545alright look dude. A solo being long as fuck and full of technicality is cool but it’s not particularly always ear pleasing. It’s a reason I’ve never heard of that shit but everyone’s heard of Marty and thinks this solo is one of the best. The feel. The musicality. The note selection. Steer away from metal and look at, say, the comfortably numb solo by David Gilmour. One of the greatest of all time. Or Jimmy Page on Heartbreaker. It’s about feel and making it fit the song.
@hughjoelcock7145 Marty is awesome. John is better. Give some of his solos a listen before judging, especially that one. Yes it's long, crazy fast in places, but also bluesey and soulful in other places.
Congratulations on 1 year Judson. You’re a funny guy and seem to be a good person. You guys make me laugh in almost every video and I’m glad to have discovered you guys.
I know this Is kinda not related to the the actual video but im having a rough time with life and thinking really bad things, this video light up my day and made It better, thank you so much, rust in peace its truly a masterpiece of music in general 🤘
Congrats on your year of sobriety, Judson! It's been one year, 20 days for me. Bad, heavy stuff. Dysfunctional marriage. Fed each other's demons. Still struggle but it's getting easier.
Good work both of you! Just had my first NA meeting yesterday. Been smoking weed and drinking daily for years and was fine but then got hooked on kratom which fucked me up way worse then i expected
Solo was all Marty Friedman. Like Judz mentioned, he's known for starting a note out of the scale (Bmin in this case) and bending it back into that scale. As well as sweep picking those arpeggios. You guys should checkout his song Rio on his solo album True Obsessions. That entire song is a masterpiece with all of Marty's signature guitar work.
what a song... what a well placed solo... never really thought about the song buts the lyrics take the listener on a 3 piece journey into the eye of the tornado assuming death... and then comes right back the other side.... then right back into the song "Can't say what's on my mind...." wow, powerful song always and what an outro! It's the kiss of death..... great lyricist, vocalist and musician all around.
Until I heard Dave's explanation of the lyrics, I always assumed the song was about his "relationship" with heroin and finding "the light" of sobriety. In my mind the "tornado* was the rock & roll lifestyle going on around him, while he was "safe, if isolated, in the "eye" of his sobriety. 🤷♂️
Congratulations, Judson! 👏🏼👏🏼 Yes, the solo was all Marty Friedman and it is easily one of the best solos of all time. It’s cool Judson immediately felt that because I’m pretty sure everyone hearing it for the first time in 1990 thought the exact same. And Richard is correct, Rust In Peace is one of the greatest Thrash albums of all time. It’s amazing from beginning to end. It’s pretty much universally acknowledged as such. Cool convo between you guys. If I can make a recommendation for another Megadeth song… something from their debut album I think Judson would enjoy is “Rattlehead.” And, that time it’s completely OK to do the Remixed 2004 version. If you’ve head the original 1985 mix you’ll understand why. I’d be curious to hear his thoughts on that one. Cheers!
Richard, you must have heard this one 100 times like I have and it's so goddamn perfect of a song that I feel that smile you had during the whole song \m/ Such a heartfelt song ❤ Too bad they never continued in that style with this lineup right afterwards, all the songs are god tier on this Megadeth album, can't say the same for all the others. I hadn't heard it since a good while and I felt it too man! p.s. last one I'd bring if i had to just bring one last is the title track (if it wasn't done) or obviously Take No Prisoners.
I got all of their autographs on my CD in a record store during the RIP tour. I knew it was a great album, but I did not fully realize that sat before me, as the English might say, was one of the greatest metal bands of all time. It is incredible to me, to this day, that four guys went into a studio and just played this stuff like they all did many times before, but the result was pure gold.
Before YT and the internet was able to share with the world how great this song is, I use to put it on for people as the best example of a great thrash metal song. It still gives me goosebumps to this day and I'm so happy this album and song get the recognition I always felt it deserved. Turns out I wasn't alone! Great stuff.
Dear Great Measures, I congratulate you for your channel and analysis/comments about the different metal bands, new and old. I would like to ask you if you can show Judson some more current Megadeth, like Dystopia and give us your opinion about the old Megadeth with the current one. You could also show him some videos or listen to and see live bands. A big hug from Chile and thanks for your content!
My guy deserves to hear the original version of a tout le monde, and if he liked this solo, he should listen to lucretia! Cheers, thanks for the content, you guys are great
There's a moment in Robinson Crusoe where he attempts to flee his island on a canoe he had made and gets swept up in a bad current. Which makes him suddenly long for the safety and comfort of a place he had just moments ago considered to be his prison. One of my favorite moments ever, and somewhat related to your conversation of addiction/dysfunction: “O happy desert!” said I, “I shall never see thee more. O miserable creature! whither am going?”
So glad Judson enjoyed this one. Aside from his likes and dislikes as far as musical taste there is no doubt as to his musical knowledge. To hear him appreciate a piece of music I have always loved kind of gives me the idea that maybe I am not tone deaf, lol, and that I am hearing what I think I am hearing. What I am saying is hearing the opinion of someone who really knows music and has a similar opinion on a piece I, a guy who is not a musician, like is a little validating.
Whats great with Judsons reaction was the stank face he gave with the first bend in the solo. Marty bends and Judson stank faces, its funny. Congrats Judson on your one year of sobriety. Im still a never ending work in progress.
8:43 lmao that one got me so good. 😂 I'd love to see you guys do some Be'lakor! They're one of my favorite bands of all time, up there with TBDM (though different styles). Songs I'd suggest as starters: -Countless Skies -In Parting -An Ember's Arc -Much More Was Lost Those second 2 are part of concept albums that tell stories. An Ember's Arc is the start of a story for its album and it's about the fusion in the sun creating a photon of light, so there's no needed context other than "it continues from there". Much More Was Lost is the last song of an album, so just for context the people that the kids come across in their adventures in that song are references to victims of tragic lives in the other songs. It's about the kids losing their innocence and blissful ignorance of the sadness of the world so to speak. The album as a whole is a collection of tragic stories of people living around a mountain over time.
Congrats Judson!👍. I have a few non related requests….A7X-Cosmic….Kim Dracula-Land of the Sun or Make me Famous..or Seventy Thorns(W-Jonathan Davis/Korn)….or A7X-Bat Country….just a few…Keep it Up Gentlemen!👍🤟🤟🤟
I know that exact same feeling, Richard, of being so excited when showing Master Of Puppets to my mom for the first time and trying to find clues in her face if we're sharing something and she drops a rational question and the dream is off lol
Please check out the Warning. You can't go wrong with any of their live performances from Teatro Metropolitan but an excellent starting point would be Dust to Dust (drummer singing lead) or Disciple (drummer and guitar player trading lead vocals) from that show. Also Evolve from the 2023 MTV VMAs. They are awesome live.
Congratulations 🎉🍾🎈 on your Journey, paired with your sobriety! Substitution , replacing a bad habit with a better habit ! Something must fill the void , just how it works ! Ps I don’t tell anybody what to do , but I will tell you from my own experience, what I wouldn’t do again !
Dave actually wrote many songs stemming from his relationship with Diana. Wake Up Dead, In My Darkest Hour, Wrecker, 1000 Times Goodbye, Trust, Burning Bridges, She Wolf, and I’m sure there’s more.
After this reaction, I believe is necessary to know a little bit more of Marty Friedman, you may try his song "Forbidden city". It's a work of art, power balad metal

Dave: So i was thinking maybe could just drop one of the greatest solos of all time on this track
Marty: I got you bro
Dave, later: "I hummed the solo to him."
FR HAHAHHA
I think calling it one of the best thrash metal albums ever doesn’t do it justice. It’s one of the best heavy metal albums ever. Period.
In fact I have always thought of it more as heavy metal than thrash (and I take a lot of crap for that) because it is so technical and not as "heavy" as a lot of true thrash. To me it was a cross-over from their true thrash phase to their heavy metal phase that started with CTE.

Congrats Judson on one year, it couldn't have been easy, don't know you personally but I feel I can still say I'm proud of you.

Congratulations Judson on the milestone !
