KANDY's Ancient Name: It is called Kanda Udarata (කන්ද උඩරට) in Sinhala, which translates to "Mountain Up-country." Colonial Influence: During the colonial period, the colonizers had difficulty pronouncing the local name correctly, leading them to refer to it simply as "Kanda," meaning "Mountain" in Sinhala. Over time, this evolved into the name "Kandy," which is widely recognized today.

When you eat authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry, the secret to getting the best taste and flavour is to use your hand to mix the curries with rice since SL rice and curry consist of minimum 3 items. If you use fork and spoon, then you will not have the proper taste. If you are a tourist who likes to try SL rice and curry, my advice is to use your fingers to mix.
During the colonial period Europeans never managed to purely militarily overwhelm the defenses of Kandy. You may remember the mountainous roads you had to follow before reaching Kandy. Proper roads were only built during British rule and even British wouldn't have overwhelmed the kingdoms defenses if the last king hadn't alienated his nobles who supported and let the English army cross the mountainous borders with no opposition. Before those roads, travelling into the kingdom in large numbers (as an army march) when the inhabitants are determined to stop you was an absolute death sentence. In 1803 British army invaded Kandy only to be harassed all along the way and find an empty city. And Sinhalese engaged in a long guerilla warfare cutting British supply lines and letting the army succumbed to illness. Also, there were records of rolling huge stones from the top of mountains on unsuspecting Portuguese/ Dutch / English armies. Basically, technologically advanced British army was slaughtered, and the city was reclaimed. Dutch East India Company (VOC) stopped invading all together because it seemed a fruitless effort that costs a lot after failing to conquer Kandy and started to butter up the king instead. Actually, the place even has a myth stating that this land is a land of victory, and it was one of the reasons the old kings saw this place as the obvious capital when facing off against European invasions. This place is the best example you will see in Sri Lanka that shows how geography can be such a deciding factor for military defenses.
