I'm a new subscriber. I started to watch your videos yesterday and I'm loving it. Also you are so kind and positive. I saw people commenting on your videos and asking questions. You always respond, and that's so sweet of you. I hope you have a safe trip. Love you!❤
That is so kind of you to say! Thank you for being a new subscriber! You know I started this channel because I wanted to inspire people to travel to lesser known places and also to support locally owned businesses so I try to spend a bit of time every day answering questions and also showing gratitude to people who want to watch what I share. RUclips is not easy at all, and so I'm thankful to people who watch and take the time to leave a comment.
So we didn't visit the south or west, which is the most popular for surfers and people on a beach holiday. That was because the island has two monsoon seasons, one affects the north east the other the south west, so you need to plan around it. Depending on how much time you have here are thoughts on each place: Colombo - we liked it and it felt like a small city. I'm all about eating food and walking around so we had a great time. Most people say one day max but it depends on if you like cities. Jaffna - Not many tourists go here and most RUclipsrs want to make it out to be some crazy place. On the other hand many say the best food is here and I would agree, it's very flavorful and similar to South India. Also because fewer people come it feels less touristy and people are so nice and helpful. Trincomalee - This is a laid back beach town that is still cheap and cheerful. I don't know what the south is like but people keep comparing it to Bali, which screams to be that it's losing its culture in favour of giving tourists smoothie bowls and instagram spots. I'm still going to check it out on the next trip though. Kandy - it was great, but everything you want to see is outside the city so I'd take a day tour or two and then I think it's enough. Ella - the town is just where you eat in between day trips. If you don't ride a motorbike there are plenty of tours to take you to the main spots. The trip from Ella to Colombo, the end of my last video was amazing and the best part of the trip. You don't have to book 30 days in advance like the main public regular trains and it wasn't busy at all. I didn't go to Galle because it was raining every day but it looked beautiful and I definitely want to go. I do recommend reading the Seasons of Trouble which I shared in the Jaffna part of this video. Also there is a podcast that called what the hell happened to Sri Lanka, its just 6 or 7 episodes of 10 minutes each but both of them gave me a really good understanding of the country. The Seasons of Trouble really affected me as I realized a lot of the people I was interacting with had been through an awful civil war. I don't often dig that deep before I visit a place but I think it really helped me appreciate the people more. But also know that the wifi is horrific, the worst I've ever been in...well I think the Philippines probably ties it. When you get to the airport you can get a SIM card for $14 or so and I think it was 90GB of data. You'll need it. If you have any other questions just ask! But also just so you know, if you reply to one of my comments to you I don't get an email notification. I try to scroll back through comments from the previous week but if it's more than a week ago just start a new comment so I get an email about it.
Oh my gosh, Ayngelina. Thank you so much for your massive comment back (on which part of Sri Lanka was your fave, etc.)! Wow! I'm so touched you would take the time to do that. It's full of such helpful info - even down to wifi info. Thank you SOOOO much!!!! You are a gem 🥰
Hello A & A, GREAT video of Sri Lanka, esp food served on banana leaves! Notice people don't bother you on the street, beautiful drone shots! Keep everything covered, now dealing with consequences of intense sun exposure! Take care.Tuktuk rental sounds exciting!
So it was interesting in that no one approached US. But when Alan was away from me people approached me. But they weren't aggressive toward me. Some offered services etc but after years of travel you know that more often than not, nothing good comes from someone who approaches you first. I would just chat with them and when they offered their services I politely said no thank you and it was no big deal.
It depends, sometimes I shoot myself with a tripod, sometimes Alan shoots me. Most drone shots are mine with a DJI Mini 2 but in some cases I can't get them, like in the Ella Odyssey where I'm on the train so I can't fly the drone and I used stock video. Sri Lanka is a bit tricky with drones. They make it easy that you can apply online, but you need to know when and where you'll be flying. Once you're there you need to contact the authorities when you start and end your drone flight, but a lot of them now just text through whatsapp so that's great. But we changed our plans a couple times so I didn't have places approved to fly and I'm not the kind of person who will fly without approval even though I know a lot of people do.
@ayngelina wow , then I must mention that you're a good drone operator too. The Arial shots are amazing. Keep up the good work , it's nice to see your videos.❤️
When we traveled I absolutely felt safe, and I'd have no issue traveling the country on my own. However, the bus drivers drive like maniacs. I didn't worry as much when we were on the bus because it seems that everyone knows that they will drive on both sides of the road so they get out of their way. But when we were on a motorbike there were a few times buses came toward us head on - thankfully Alan is Indonesian and has been driving all his life so he knew what to do, but you can see a couple close calls on his channel @Motorounds. I read some people complaining that people were aggressive with them trying to sell tours and things on the street. When I was with Alan no one really approached me at all. And sometimes I could see them starting to approach me but then they saw him and turned around. But sometimes he was away from me filming and people approached me but I was kind but firm and said no thank you. Comparing it to countries in Europe like Italy or Spain I thought these touts weren't as aggressive. My basic rule in every country is that I am not interested in any service from anyone who approaches me on the street. I am happy to have conversations, talk about where I'm from etc etc but I don't want to exchange money, take a tour or go anywhere with someone who approaches me. But I am always polite and kind because people are just trying to make a living and put food on the table for their families.
Yes I could see some similarities to Kerala. I think it's wonderful that a country as small as Sri Lanka offers different cultural experiences. On our next trip I'd like to see the southwest so I need to plan around monsoon season.
Please put the garbage in a garbage container and dispose of it properly.
Agreed! It's one of the things that took away from the experience, especially in Jaffna Fort which was a view of garbage. I hope it can change in the future.

Is Sri Lanka Safe? 💗
