Look at it this way. The guy that gave you the fridge helped hundreds of people that might not be able to afford a repairman or a new fridge and you my friend posted a great video that has saved people hundreds of dollars. So credit goes to you and the guy you got it from. Great video! Thanks so much!!

That first part you removed is not only a thermal overload protector. It is actually called a start relay. Instead of using a capacitor, there is a small round disk (semiconductor) inside the plastic shell that is called a thermistor. It allows voltage to run into the start winding of the compressor with no resistance at start up. The voltage running through the thermistor causes it to heat up rapidly which increases the resistance of the material that the thermistor is made out of, which stops voltage from continuing to pass through the start winding due to the high resistance. It's only allowing voltage to pass through long enough to start the compressor. It cools down when the compressor cycles off via the thermostat, and when it calls for cooling again, the thermistor is cooled off and allows voltage to pass through again to restart. Thermistors work good, but their lifespan isn't as good as other set ups.

This was a great video. My Frigidaire took a dump on me. I watched every video I could find, and he is right about having to try many things in order to find the problem. Then again, I had never worked on a fridge before. I got down to the thermostat, the knob on the front of the fridge. So, I took it off and went to a local appliance store that sells new and used stuff. They guy working there told me he had never seen one of those go bad before. He acted like he did not want to sell me the part, but he did. It took me awhile to get it back together. But it started working Now it stays at about 0 in the freezer and 38 in the fridge. Whereas it was around 30 in the fridge and freezing stuff or 40ish and ruining what was in there. My Thanks to you guys who take the time to make these videos and the time to explain what to look for and how to fix.

By chance I found your video and having the exact same refrigerator I followed your instructions. Since neither the compressor or fan was working I went directly and turned the defroster screw and it’s now working normal the same as in your video. I’m going to order a replacement part as you recommended. Thanks for your help through your video. I’m impressed.

Great video! You mentioned power surges could blow out the parts which makes sense for our location but, we also have the issue that in the fall, being located in an unheated room with the room temperature around 30-40 degrees F, the freezer section defrosted and only blows warm air, plus the fridge doesn't cool. What parts could be affected in that scenario? Likely the defrost timer due to the room being so cold, or could that also affect the capacitor and/or relay? Now that it's spring, we have to repair.

Very informative! I have - I believe - the same model fridge and have been running into defrost issues for a bit now. I’ll defrost the fridge in full, it’ll work just fine for about a month, and then it’ll frost back over and the fridge is 50 degrees. I replaced the timer, the coil appears to be working, and the thermostat doesn’t seem to be bulging or defective. Would you recommend replacing that same piece in the back as a long term solution?

I'm having a problem with my fridge that started the other day.. 1 side of the freezer had ice built up.. so I popped the ice off, and ever since the freezer is blowing cold on one side... but the other side isn't blowing cold... the refrigerator isn't staying cold at all, but you can hear and feel air coming out.. also my fan behind the fridge is working. I cleaned the dust out, and I'm still having a problem. Do you have any suggestions at all?
In the Freezer, there's this little piece of plastic you can pop off, and it shows you the cooling tube, which is cold, but I'm stuck there, and idk what to do next...

My frigidaire gallery refrigerator is not cooling like it should. The compressor kicks on, the fans work and it has freon. When I hold down the buttons on the front of it on the door to start the defrost mode. After it runs the mode, it will get colder. But then the temp goes back up to 70 in the refrigerator part and around 60 in the freezer. If I do the defrost several times in a row, it gets cold but after an hour or so. It goes back up in temp. I unplugged it and left it off for several days. I plugged it back up last night and it dropped in temp from 80 to 70 but that's as cool as it got. I did the defrost mode on it, and the temp went down to 60. But it goes right back up. What could be the issue? I am lost on what to look up to fix it. I replaced the fan inside the freezer. It stopped working. And I learned how to put freon in. Now this issue. 🤦‍♀️ please help me. 🙏

    • @joshcobb4100

Big block of ice is either caused by a clogged drain and the water backs up and freezes, very common, or it’s low on Freon and constantly running which can cause and ice build up too. Also could be a bad defrost heater.

My best guess would be either the compressor is starting to go out and pushing more amps than it’s supposed to, or you might be low on Freon, causing the compressor to run more than it’s supposed to. I have had this problem in the past and best I could do was swap my gfci outlet to a standard outlet, and cross your fingers that it doesn’t trip the breaker. But if I’ve done this 10 times, 10 times it’s been successful. The problem might lie in your outlet.

When you plug the new part in first, then plug in the refrigerator then wait 20 minutes and it should be working?

If the freezer is cold, like it’s supposed to be, and you might have a fan issue, either it’s week or not working getting powerful enough to blow the air down into the fridge. Might check that.

I would check the start relay on the compressor and make sure it’s not burnt out. Could be your compressor overheating or shorting out. Could also be a bad thermostat.

17:56 - I think, by “calm down” here, you mean to allow the refrigerant pressures to equalize through the capillary tube metering device so there’s no undue load on the compressor when it starts again.

Hey man, i got a frigidear 2008 that im trying to save.. id appreciate ur wisdom! The fridge wasnt cooling past 45 but freezer was neg 0 .. i powered off by turning the breaker off because its a small kitchen and hard to get to the plug.. i took off back and felt it wasnt iced up blocking the tube for the fan to blow. So i out everything back and switched it back on and now the fridge light wont come on and can hardly feel the fan blowing.. i tried to reset it opening both doors for twenty minutes then switching the power back on at the fuse panel and still not on… any advice?

    • @joshcobb4100
      @joshcobb4100  Год назад +1

That’s odd…maybe a damaged plug? Or damaged outlet? Sounds like it’s a pain to get that fridge out but the original issue might have been a buildup of dust bunnies on the coils underneath the back of the fridge.

@@joshcobb4100 thanks for the reply big guy! sorry i didnt word it out as well as i thought because my gf was yelling in my ear! Sorry lol.. ok i shut off the fridge at the breaker panel to see if i had ice buildup at the tube for the air flow to hit fridge because the freezer was pumping at neg 2 but the fridge was at 45/46 degrees.. before i shut off the fridge i felt some air coming from the fan in the fridge but it was hard air.. when i put the power back on the freezer is working still but now the fridge lights arent working it its hardly blowing any air inside.. i also unclipped the power to ice cube maker and not going to put it back because we never used it and it gives me more space for the freezer. Could that be the reason why the fridge lights arent working now? Like an open line or something? Or it doesn’t matter? I’m sorry for the ton of q’s!! But im mentally handicapped lol! I will take it out and clean the dust though like u said maybe thats why its not cooling

Nine times out of 10 This is an issue with the fan, not blowing the air down into the refrigerator compartment. If your fan is running, then the damper might be stuck closed. I would check those two things first.

If you have checked all of that and everything is running but not cooling, it’s likely a Freon leak….no Freon and it’ll do everything it’s supposed to but cool properly (or at all).

Sorry, but I’m confused with the dial thing. It clicked, and I heard something running. But I didn’t feel air still. Whenever I went to the back, unplugged then plugged it back in, I saw the fan running, then I heard that black tin click. I don’t understand which one is broken.

All fridges are utter garbage nowadays. The last two fridges I have owned went out in under 3 years. On my first fridge, the guy said he could fix it, but it would cost twice what the fridge cost me new (lol). He said just to buy a new one. Well the one I bought to replace it lasted 2.5 years. So I called another repairman to see if it could be fixed. He came out and said it couldn't be fixed and that I needed a new one yet again. Why does this happen? Because the environmental laws change about every year and manufacturers are having to make fridges with cheaper and cheaper parts that don't last.
