great teacher! clear and detailed photos and explanations. I am an old DYI guy playing and learning how to fix the AC on our camper van. I learned from this video the importance of changing all capacitors and relays at once. I worked my way one by one and have ended up with a problem again, probably a new capacitor blown.

Thank you so much for this fine and informative video! My fridge has one of the modules with the built in control board, and it failed last. I have a 17 year old mini fridge that recently stopped cooling. Upon plugging it in, the compressor would hum for a few seconds and then the overload would click and trip open. Checked the protector, very low ohms. Checked the start relay, completely open. No rattles, but when I took off the cover the disc and contacts looked pretty bad. Wanting to make sure a new start relay was the right fix, I made a jumper for the start relay pins, and then plugged in the fridge just for 1-2 seconds and unplugged it, and the compressor started up and sounded normal. After watching your video and the troubleshooting I feel confident enough to order a new start relay. Thank you for sharing.

Today I changed burnt PTC Thermistor in my Samsung fridge. Your instructions mentioned to check the resistance between starter and running inputs (bottom two out of total three)of PTC. It should not be open. Guess what! Mine was open. Along with other tests I decided to chagned PTC for $15.00 from Grainger. It worked. Thank you very much for a very good explanation.

Recently had a Frigidaire mini-fridge that wasn't cooling. Compressor was hot and when the thermal overload reset, it was pilling 9 amps with an LRA of 11. I checked the PTC and it was reading about 50 ohms. I disassembled it and found signs of carbon/overheating on the run terminal/PTC contact surfaces. I scraped both surfaces down and got a reading of 9 ohms. I reinstalled it and the fridge started up with 1.3 amps while running. It continued working while I awaited arrival of the $10 replacement. It's running fine. Thanks for the great video which I found after I had repaired the fridge.

Seems 88/108 is fairly common with vintage refrigerators and freezers. I'm troubleshooting a 42+ year old Sears 106.6327150 upright freezer that went out for the first time last summer, and it has the same spec for the capacitor in it. I have yet to remove it from the plastic housing it's mounted in to see if it's leaked at all, but one afternoon this coming week I'll be going through it part by part in hopes that what made it go out was a still-available component. Lost 100+ lbs of salmon and beef when it went out last summer. Hooooo that stung the nostrils....

Hey Craig great viid!!!!! But... Reminds me of a request I've had rattling around in my coconut... COMMON VS.NUETRAL VS.T-STAT VS.TRANS VS.120 BLOW VS.240 BLOW VS. BOARD N.BOARD C........ANYWAY "common" is thrown around a lot everywhere and I think you are the guy that could differentiate concisely the term C.

Ha ha yeah it can be confusing but common is essentially the path back but can mean different things depending on 24v, 120v, and 240, thanks for letting me know!

Galco TV refers to "OL" as "open lead". Oh is a letter zero is a number. Greg thanks for your excellent videos, well presented and accurate.

Open line, Over Limit, the list goes on but basically the resistance value is too high to read with the meter. It is reading the resistance across the air from probe to probe, thanks

@@acservicetechchannel Correct, the term is a matter of preference by the instructor. Open line or open lead is what I feel most comfortable using, again it is a matter of choice. Thanks for your reply.

Question, My compressor cane with two types, the pin config is the same as the third compressor in your first illustration, but has the pc thermistor and overload protector attached, but also came with the third version with the start capacitor, on the side of the compressor says no start without starting device, I love you book and videos, always wanted to learn about this, Ty, Anthony

What about a solid state device in place of the thermistor? I was checking a refrigerator for my home and found a tiny circuit board in the start up plastic shell that plugged into the compressor.

Craig this is great video explaining these start components. I greatly appreciate all of your videos. I have a question. I work at a facility doing the HVAC throughout the buildings. Just installed a new thermostat on an old Traulsen reach in fridge. It's over 30 years old. runs great now. After watching this video and another about currect relays I am considering getting new start components for this Traulsen. Would that be the proactive right thing to do? The parts for the Tecumseh compressor can be gotten locally for under $50. Your thoughts?

Your video helped me diagnose a friends mini freezer with a broken PTC starter. I can't find an exact replacement anywhere on the web. Can I pull the PTC off another broken freezer even if the resistance is slightly different? My friends broken one is rated at 4.7Ohms and my working one is rated at 6.8Ohms. Is it safe to switch? Thanks.

first the current go in the windings of the relais to the startwinding , the relais comes in en turn the contact of of the start winding . the back emf from the start winding holds the relais ON (relais on is contact of the start winding )for the run winding . sorry my English is not good

Not on the diagnosis but resistance values will be equal on all three pairs when the wires are disconnected to the compressor, thanks!

Hi, I wanted to make this silent compressor so I got from my friend the ac compressor (from external unit) and I was wandering whether you would be able to help me with connection of my ac compressor ( ac was single phase) but there wasn't separate capacitor as I can see on some RUclips videos, there was whole like main board from computer and there were few capacitors, any way on the compressor itself is a label which says 148VDC, at 120Hz, and I have no idea how to connect it to a power supply
