He gave a lot of them to the the church once he gave one to me that weighed at least 3 lbs quit when he was 91 years old. Miss him passed at 94 years.he did have an outside root cellar in his back yard..lived in town too. Enjoy your videos.blessings to you to.

      It annoys me. And I’m sure I’ll get ugly comments for saying so, but I think it should be in the title or subscription name if you’re going to push your religious beliefs off on me. I’m not against praising God, but I do think especially in this political climate, we need to learn to respect others beliefs. The biggest misconception I see on the right is that people on the left are godless, but my leftist friends are more representative of the values I grew up with in Church. Maybe when evangelicals quit overlooking their own values to get what they want, my mind will change, but right now, it makes me angry. I’ll worship my way thank you very much.

      listen, I wasn't nasty, there's no reason for the "cancel culture" bs. I'm sick of being misled. If it's not this, I'm clicking on something with an English title but they're speaking a different language. I'm happy to worship my way. How bout making it more clear to people what you're all about? Cuz just "Christian" can't be true if "cancel culture" comes into play that easily...just sayin ;)

      @@melothrien6774 Heather, What you're saying is nonsense. If you're offended by these kind and gentle people thanking God for the bounty.He has provided, then you're the one with the problem. The beauty of our nation and it's constitution and bill of rights is that it allows room for all points of view. Why have here freedom of religion, you however do not have freedom from religion. Just as you display freedom from religion, they have the right to express their freedom of religion. This comment pits you in the wrong. Oh, and by the way, Jesus stated in His Word, the cross of the Messiah is an offense to all who will not receive Him!! Lol it up!

    Love your videos and your gratitude to God.
    As a note, Yukon Gold is a determinate variety, meaning it will only grow potatoes beneath the seed potato. Only indeterminate varieties should be buried deep as potatoes will grow all along their buried stems. Plant Yukon Gold about 4" from the top of your soil and you'll have a much higher yield.
    Keep up the great work!

    When I was growing up, we had a big garden where we lived. We would cut up the seed potato up so that each one would have at least two eyes on it( one would shoot out roots and the other the stem). Dad used to fly racing pigeons, so he put the manure on the garden. Hot fertilizer it was, but made outstanding crops. We had a ferrow plow on a old Ford 9n tractor for harvesting. Always had enough potatoes to last the family all winter plus enough in the spring to plant. Every year we'd decrease one row of potatoes, but still have the same amount at the end. Keep up the good work, your garden's soil will get better every year!

Now I'm no where near your level, I only did tomatoes, pole and bush beans, cucumber, radishes, lettuce, herbs and carrots but it's a start! We've been eating A LOT of lettuce cause I grew the cut and come again kind. My husband LOVES it too which surprised me a bit. He's a truck driver and I figured he'd be too worn out to help but he likes it. Thank you so very much for your inspiration. Hollis and Nancy, Thanks for the video. I did grow Russet potatoes in grow bags for the first time this year (late spring for late summer/early fall harvest) and watching you harvest those Taters and the ease of separation and reclaiming the soil, sold me on doing all my potatoes that way next year. I have the russets for fall harvest in big grow bags and will be harvesting my Yukons from the spring planting in my raised beds in the next week (~60 days out and tops starting to yellow). I also have russets in the beds and they will come out in about 2 weeks. Sorting on the tarp like you did is much simpler than the careful digging and treasure hunting done when in a raised bed. THANKS!

We were so excited that this worked and now we plan on getting those big blue buckets for our next attempt. Questions: Can you reuse the seed taters again??? What happens if you eat the taters WITHOUT the curing process? How do you amend the soil to reuse? Thanks so much for posting these helpful vids! It gives us a bit of comfort knowing we CAN grow our OWN food-especially during these turbulent, uncertain times.

    Thanks for the video. If I go this route, I'm gonna make a harvest table so I'm not crawling in the dirt. The dirt can fall back into the barrel and hauled away easily.

    Hi! I’m in the research of starting our own little garden. I found you today. I’ve seen your videos for more than 2 hours now. Very easy to understand. I love how you make the draws and explain I’m a very simple way, and then your demonstration. I’m down here in FL.
    Hope to write you a limes when I harvest my first product in the near future. God bless you both.

      You can replant the seed potato if it is in good shape but always use new soil for potatoes

    I planted 2 barrels of potatoes ,one mini whites and another barrel of sweet potatoes at about the end of April. I hope they turn out well. I used 2 full size barrels but filled them up only about 3/4 full of dirt.
    I wish I could grow some Yukon Gold. They are they tastiest potatoes I have ever tried, even if they are instant potatoes. They are the best.

    build yourself a table that has a section with 1/2 screen mesh built in, with catch tubs underneath. when you dump out your containers you can work the dirt thru the screen as your getting your taters. then you can take the tubs of dirt to your reclaim area. Your knees will thank you.

    I can't decide if I want to use the big buckets or the 5-gallon buckets, but I'm going to try this, this year. I've been gardening for 50 years and never tried to grow potatoes in containers.

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  2 года назад +3

      We like to do both. Nancy likes to go out and harvest a 5 gallon bucket to get a bunch of small new potatoes for supper. They have a taste unmatched by anything in a grocery store. This way she can get a few at a time. Then we have the tubs to harvest for long term storage. 👍🥔🥔🥔

    Hi Hollis & Nancy,
    I was about to get so mad... I watched parts 1-3 on how to grow potatoes in containers... At the end of part 3, you said you were in late phase 5 and then you said goodbye. Where was the harvest, how did it turn out... I cant believe you left me hanging! Then a big sigh of relief and I found your harvest video, phew!
    Thank you for taking so much time with your video's... For those who don't need such descriptive instruction, can fast forward and just take in what they need. But for those like me, just starting out, your video's are so thorough and exactly what I was hoping to find!
    You guys are terrific and thank you very much!
    Got to go... This year my Cucumbers will grow Vertically on a trellis! Thanks to you of course!!!
    All the best!

Would love to see some pix of your cucumber trellis when you finish. Please post some pix on our Facebook page 👍. Have a peaceful week ❤️❤️🐶

    It's better to grow them in 4ft tall by 1.5ft square wire cages. Plant the potatoes in soil 6in deep and covered by 6in of soil. Then cover new growth with straw as it emerges right up to the top of the cages.

So we thank you from the bottom of our heart we watched your three potato videos from start I love them and we learned a lot . I started them in early April. They take 85-110 days of temps above 50 degrees F until ready to harvest👍

    To me, the best thing about home grown potatoes is the ability to dig them up and fry them up right away. They have a completely different flavor. Is there a reason you let yours sit for awhile first?

      Oh no, we eat some immediately. I let them cure for two weeks so the skins are tougher because we like to eat the skins too but you can eat them as soon as you harvest them. Letting the skins cure also promotes long term storage. I didn't do a very good job of explaining that on the video

    Hi folks, this is Len from Edenvale near Johannesburg South Africa. Enjoyed learning how to grow potatoes in buckets and will be doing so as soon as seed potatoes are ready. Will let you know how they turn out , OK. Climate here is how rainy summers and dry frosty winters. Now in the middle of summer, being in southern hemisphere seasons are opposite to yours. Also pleased that you give all glory and thanks to the Lord our God. Amen.

    When the flowers bloom and it starts to turn brown and leaves falling off, etc, do you continue watering as this is happening? I assume so, but just want to make sure.

    • @isabeauskorski9961
      @isabeauskorski9961 4 года назад

      Lorraine Smith I think not. When they turn yellowish brown and look wilting, I think that’s when you stop watering.

      Stop watering completely during stage 5
