I'm from Australia and I've just joined the retired brigade, and am looking for ways to grow vegies in a very small area as we're on a very small house block which is mostly paved. I just finished watching all 3 of Hollis' potato videos as I've never grown food before ever. We shouldn't have to worry about too much rain here in Australia, as we're in drought more often than not. It's amazing that these videos were made nearly 3 years ago, and replies and comments are still coming. Looks like you have a whole new audience now Hollis. The covid-19 is making everyone rethink their values, and I think stepping back and creating a lot of our own food has got to be so satisfying rather than going up and down a supermarket aisle and just bagging whatever, without a clue as to where its come from. I'll be a regular view from now on Hollis. Keep up the good work. You can tell that you absolutely love what you're doing. Cheers from Australia.

I have had a couple bad years with potatoes due to drainage issues. Trying again. There is something satisfying about digging in the dirt and finding them.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This was my first time doing this. So I used only 1 5 gallon bucket and followed your educational videos as best as I could. To my delight, I harvested about 20 medium to small potatoes!
Good for you! Did you use seed potatoes? How many & what kind did you use?
Swap out your peet for coco. You will get better drainage. We average 4 lbs per 5 gal bucket. We use pretty much the same mix. Just that peet holds on to water to long. After we switched to coco we doubled our average yield.
I am going to reuse some potting soil I mixed last year with peet... was wondering if I could add a little sand to the mixture to help with drainage? Trying to cut back on my garden budget this year and use what I have available.
After watching all 3 of these videos, and saving them as well , not to mention subscribing to your channel , I was just thinking . What a spike in the comments section recently.

Yay! People are joining this community thanks to this pandemic! People seem to be worried. Now theres a chicken meat shortage so why not keep chickens! I'm currently convincing my parents to let me. It'll be my 4th year keeping chickens. Always had to give them away lol
Hang in there... in the meantime, get your hands dirty in the garden. 🌱 I walk around happy and grateful working on mine. You can order a bunch of things online. I bought my food grade buckets at Walmart for $3 each. I buy what I can on sale, improvise with parts here and there. Nothing better for the immune system than being out in the fresh air and sun working on a garden... feeds the body and soul.

Hollis & Nancy - I really enjoy your videos. I especially appreciate that you don't cherry pick "the best of" outcomes. My university degree was in an experimental science. If I didn't learn anything else than this from my college experience it was we learn more from our "failed" experiments than we do from the successes. You showed in this video series just how much potatoes depend on consistent watering and how quickly soggy soil can ruin the crop. Thank you!

This is an awesome method!
Just keep in mind this is about an 85-110 day process, the amount of edible calories that come out of the bucket minus the calories it takes you to grow them, is not a huge net, and of course you will need regular calories in that 3-4month period anyways. If you really need calories there may be something faster to grow with that same, space, raw materials, and effort.

We love the great Great Bible verses at the end of your videos, we've learned so much Bible from the gardeners, the preppers, the homesteaders and the bakers 🌟👑🙏🕊 I think it's because working with seeds, the Earth and yeast, it just makes you see God and the Divine Perfection all around us, to the most minute detail. Gardening and Baking lets you see God.

Now as an older adult with a love for gardening, it is refreshing to see videos of things we can’t control, like Mother Nature and too much rain. Go buy some buckets get all the supplies and bring the kids over and put each kid's name on a bucket and show him how to plant potatoes. You can even bring the parents in on this. No matter what happens at the end of the season all the taters get split up evenly. Because one bucket can yield none even though everything was done correctly.

Thank you. I just watched all three videos. It was very inspiring to walk through all of the growing periods and the harvest. I would have been happy with a harvest of two potatoes. Just knowing that I grew them will be worth the fun and time spent on the process.
Add way more perlite to your mix it's great for aeration also adding alot more smaller diameter holes on the bottom for better drainage will decrease your rot loss....don't try to control the rain, try to increase drainage and air retention through your soil mix....good luck

When we get a lot of rain I roll my containers under our overhanging balcony until the rain lets up . Saved a batch last Nov. 2021 doing that . It's February now and I still have a one more container to harvest . Each time I have planted I have had better results , and yes they taste amazing . You're blessed to both have a passion for this . At least I get some help in the cooking part , lol .
I had a miserable potato harvest 3 years ago, and it broke my heart because I only had those tiny 5 gallon buckets. Back then I only grew a single bucket per variety and had almost no potatoes that year! Now, I plant in 25 gallon pots and have no less than 3 per variety I grow. I grow 4 varieties each year, Kennebec white, Pontiac Red, a Large Russet and some sort of specialty potato I experiment with like an over priced exotic fingerling...Your videos have been a tremendous help and I appreciate the time you've taken to make them and share! @@HollisNancysHomesteadI was afraid to grow taters for years and failed more than I succeeded! I never gave up though and finally figured it out. My soil was my issue always being to dense and heavy staying to wet and just would'nt produce anything! Now I use a soil formula similar to yours and it just, works! This year I'm shooting for 2 crops of potatoes! I think I can pull it off with my long growing season and hoop houses! I have different materials I use on those covers and can create a greenhouse setup! My goal for 2019 is, 200 pounds combined, :-o wish me luck!

In spite of the rain and loss to rot, it is still really astounding how many potatoes were obtained from even just one little 5 gallon bucket and from out of only three! To be blessed with that much from so very little space is amazing.

Just finished the three bucket potato videos and I really enjoyed them. Found them really informative and am looking forward to trying this next season. Also wanted to say, I appreciated seeing the buckets that didn't work out because of the rain. It's encouraging to see that even veteran gardeners like yourselves sometimes get less than perfect results. Keep up the great videos and thanks for all the good info.

Soooo get them out of the rain! If you have them growing in a bucket it stands to reason that if you are getting too much rain to just bring them into the garage or under a covered patio for the duration of your downpours. If you are getting multiple days, all day, rains pull a clear plastic tarp over them in a tent so they still get sun if the sun comes out between storms and ventilation through the tent but without the water pouring in the bucket itself. Since you have them on that growing rack against the fence, staple one edge of the plastic on the fence and make a lean-to tent open on each end for ventilation. 🤷♀️
I'm sure he needs your advice. Maybe a few buckets of potatoes just aren't that important to him to worry about.

the second bucket had a lot more foliage which would direct the rain away from the bucket. Now I know when I do this...move the buckets to cover during extended days of rain!

Since you have your potatoes, next to a fence put a tarp on top of fence poles in front on a taper for rain run off then just roll up after rain stops so you don't loose crops.from do much water.hope it helps god bless

Found your channel this morning and appreciate your video sharing of growing potatoes in buckets. As some others have commented and my DH has always said...buying them in stores is cheaper. That's true but from experience with other veggies, home grown just tastes soon much better and is rewarding. 2 seed potatoes in a 5 gallon bucket. Average yield of 6 potatoes. 3 to 1 return on investment. Good enough to feed mother in law. Well worth 4 months time, 16 gallons of water, 2 cubic feet of soil, and 1 square foot of land.

We lost a lot of our potatoes (in buckets) too due to so much rain. We had a lot of success with pole beans though. We have learned so much watching your videos. Thanks Nancy and Hollis. Keep up the good work and good luck with finding your homestead.

You need to add clean coarse sand into your dirt mix, and put a layer of gravel in the very bottom of the bucket. Cover the holes with some broken plant pot first though. That way the drainage will be better. If you can't see water coming out the bottom of the pot when you water, then there is too much loam in the dirt.
