    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  3 года назад +11

      Yes. It takes us an entire year to create our videos. We do that in an effort to present the entire life of the plant from seed to harvest so our first time gardeners will know what to expect BEFORE they attempt to grow any vegetable. It is the least profitable method for a RUclipsr but we are in it for the subscribers not the money👍

      I like container gardening a lot. Especially now that I am getting older and not as limber and strong as I used to be. Yes ma’am, don’t put fish in containers. There is not enough good bacteria to break it down and it gets maggot infested. Fish emulsion is perfect

    Hollis I just got my tators planted today. I haven't even started my tomatoes seeds yet. I will start mine in a few days when the signs get right. I plant parks Whopper been planting these for 35 years. Hollis I put the shells which is calcium in the year before where I'm going to plant my tomatoes. I get mature manure that's been cleaned out of my uncle's lots. He stacked it up and I wait a few years on it before I get it. Here in Oklahoma I use an 18-46-0 fert between my plants. I planted six feet apart and it will grab the the fert as the root systems get bigger. Like you I use fish.

    Hollis, Nancy, & Bing Bing... I really love all of your instructional videos, I have been a loyal follower ever since I started my gardening and preservation journey 9-years ago. I have learned so much from you and I am extremely grateful for all you do for all of us. I love your new home there in Florida, it is just beautiful. I would like to ask you a few questions if I may... First, do you feed your plants (especially your tomatoes) intermittently throughout the growing season, or only at planting time? Also, is there a reason for having such a great distance between your plants and rows? I know that I have to allow at least 3-feet between mine to allow for the lawnmower, but you do not seem to need that in your garden.
    I am hoping and planning to expand my garden this coming year, if my health allows, I have been praying on it an awful lot because groceries are only going to be getting more expensive and I also do a lot of canning and preserving. I like to also plant enough to help the neighbors because last fall they gave me free rein of their orchard, so I was able to preserve apples, pears, Black Walnuts along with the wild raspberries and Hickory nuts from our own yard. I was able to make a ton of Apple and Pear sauce and butter and many jars of Apples and pears in just a very light syrup.
    I will be watching as many of your videos as I can and taking notes so that I can put together the best garden I can this year in order to preserve enough for our family and help as many people as we can during these hard times. Blessing to both of you and Bing Bing also and thank you again for all you've taught me and the world.

      Yes sir, it is a high risk video. Could take 5-6 months to build the video and if something fails at the end beyond our control such as hard freezes, hurricanes, etc. we could lose the entire video. It also takes a tremendous amount of storage for the files while the video is in development. This fills up the hard drive quickly forcing us to use external hard drives. I believe we have 12 External Hard Drives currently and could probably use 6 more. All this effort is well worth it for our subscribers especially first time gardeners. We want them to see the entire process for each individual vegetable all on one video rather than multiple videos. Just seems to make sense. ❤️

      @@HollisNancysHomestead I can't thank you enough for using this method of instruction! We are first time gardeners this year and I am binge watching all of your content and you have answered SO many questions already. BY THE WAY!! While I was watching your squash seed to harvest video, I saw your sketches and took note of how you labeled your dwgs and your dimensions, and it looks like you were a former draftsman/designer! Then in another older video, you had the famous picture of the NNS gate!! Are you originally from VA?? I started my career there in 2006 as a designer and was at NNS for almost 12 years!! Now working from home these days! :) I was so tickled to realize that you must be from this area and a former shipbuilder! I'd love to know what dept you were in and what you did!
      Thank you again SO much for all the work you put into your channel! Your experience is helping us immensely!!
      Mary & Brad

    Thanks for sharing! Is it too late to apply all these nutrients if I've already planted my tomatoes? What method do you recommend for applying the nutrients to plants already in the ground?

    Yummy.. Is it tomato season now?! 😄 I am just about to start my tomato seeds today, here in Europe, Germany.. Only 5 months left for a good tomato sandwich! I wish I could skip the time like your videos do 😄 Thank you for sharing it with us! Greetings, Judit

    Last spring was a tough year for tomatoes here in central Florida. Got hot so early after not much cold weather all winter. Looks like you did a little better north of me.

      I'm a Florida native & that sand is hard to walk in, impossible to plant in & gets so hot in the summertime it will take the hide off your feet! I was born in Tampa.

      They are these little invisible (super tiny) bugs that bite like a chigger & they usually are the worst around mid summer. They are horrible.

    I’m so jealous. The snow is mostly off my garden (early because we’re unseasonably warm at the moment) but it isn’t even time for me to start my seeds for another couple of weeks!
