My first gardening memory happened when I was maybe five. My late Dad let me help him in the garden, planting onion sets, much like the smallest onion sets you had shown. Like you, Daddy gave me a wooden ruler and said they had to be planted in a zig zag fashion, as you did. Giving me a pencil stub about 3" long, Dad said hold the metal ring, and poke a hole until your fingers around that ring touch the soil, then put the little onion in the hole gently patting the dirt down around it, thanking the Lord for the little onion. Then he taught me about the inches on the ruler, and told me to plant them in two rows in a zig zag pattern. Oh my goodness, how delighted I was to see the onions grow, and how proud I was when it was harvest time. So many lesson that day, that have stayed with me over five decades later. When my kiddos were small, I we planted onions together, and I shared the lessons their late Grandpa taught me. Sorry for the ramble, but this video brought back some sweet memories. Blessings and grace to you. :)

I was fortunate to have neighbors much like him. Knowledge like this just can't be bought, ANYWHERE, it has to be passed down from one generation to the next...so my children and I where the fortunate recipients of those generations worth of knowledge! I just can't be thankful enough for that, my girls and I will forevermore benefit from their generosity, and as they lived, the best way to "repay them, is to pay it forward, to use that Knowledge and to teach others to use it as well, to never let it die.

I just can't thank you enough for that. It was just what I needed tonight because i just got out of the hospital of 11 days and been doing a little research on my garden items while I have been resting up. I put the shiny side of the aluminum foil on the inside and put it in the oven on 315°. I cook for about 30 minutes. It is cooked and delicious.

If you ever visit the northwest, check the season... seek out Walla Walla onions at restaurants. The Burgerville chain uses only these sweet onions, to make the best onion rings you’ll ever have. Some people have these onions shipped to them after moving around the country. They are perfect for eating like an apple, too. I’m moving onto a larger property soon and hope to plant these ASAP.

My heart goes out to you and your wife, we lost our son also. Not only have we been connected by gardening, but with our sorrows as well. Thank you!!! Me too. When folks are learning gardening I like to let them see the entire cycle as much as possible. I want them to know what to expect and watch for when they are growing something for the first time. Perhaps eliminate some of the trial and error we all experience. Hopefully this will encourage folks to garden with a little more confidence. It is really not complicated and very relaxing. Best of luck to you with your garden this year. Have a peaceful Easter Weekend 😇

Bulbing is triggered by short nights so the biggest problem for many folks near suburbs is light pollution. There is always some jerk in the neighborhood that thinks its just dandy to put up unshielded lights all over the outside of their house blazing away for nobody, and it can be enough to trick the young onions into bulbing early. Worked at a greenhouse long ago where a bunch of poinsettias failed to bloom,( long nights trigger blooming, short nights prevent blooming) but it was only in certain areas of the greenhouse, they finally figured out it was a security patrol walking through with a flashlight around midnight each night.

Thank you so much for posting your content! I am new-ish to gardening (after many failed attempts) and your tool modification suggestions, practical set-up, and easy-to-follow advice has already helped me! My mom grew up on a huge farm and my dad grew up on a ranch. I think I have a closer connection to both my parents and grandparents now with my own garden.

Nice video, I'm glad you waited till the end of the season and posted the entire grow in one video. Did you ever think of planting carrots with your onions? They work well together, the onions keep some pests away from the carrots.

my grandpa left the tops on and he would tie twine around the top of the onion and tie the twine to a nail on side of his smoke house to cure his and left em til he needed one to eat. usually tie 2 to 3 onions together before hanging em on the nails. but ours got big as saucers and I taught him the trick of digging dirt away from em to make the onions bigger 50 years ago. I was 12

Sorry if I missed this in the video or earlier comments, but have you ever topped any of your onions during the growing process? The reasoning is that you want more energy (sun, water, soil nutrients) going into the bulbs, not the stems/scallions. Once the stems are 12" tall, you cut them down to 6." You do that once or twice more as they grow. Next time you grow onions, could you top half a dozen during their growth and report back if you saw any difference in size? Thanks.

Awesome onions!!! Let me tell you something I'm always communicating about onions, they keep my respiratory system impeccably clean. In this days of instability and nonsense pandemia (I know this unnecessary pandemic fearmongering will pass, but won't pass soon any inconvenient bad feeling in our respiratory system, therefore I tell you) raw onions is what I use to keep my respiratory system clean. I work inside attics where no one cleans forever, without mask, gloves, and I don't pass from 2-4 sneezes and, that's mainly my flu. One day I may catch something because I don't always eat raw onions and that day I have some body pain, a slight fever, some congestion that in the following days just go easy yet, next day most of the time feels like almost nothing I caught. All this frenzy stops when we learn that God is more powerful than anything and that he had provided the way to keep us healthy, all we got to do is find that cure or element or source of healing so we keep on in our lives without the unnecessary and destabilizing fears.
Please include consuming raw onions at leat once every two weeks and keep your respiratory system spotless. Eat it or juice it with any meal, salad, burger, steak, sandwich, soup, rice, over a meal, eat all you can, give it to your children, and or juice it with any fruit and or vegetables you want. Stay healthy and going, and treat authority with respect, as ladies and gentlemen so you keep going in peace! Don't be conflictive, be nice, and stay as free and clear of every complications whoever behind this virus is. Take care everyone!
