I can't buy the most important tool of all because of scarcity and high demand. A home with a garage.
What's your daily driver?
Are you prepared to forgo the niceties for a longterm payoff?
yea, I cant afford a home either. 😅😟😠😡
You did a lot of research and this is probably the best legit budget starter set for an apprentice mechanic i have ever seen. Awesome video. I hope it gets massive exposure because it could help thousands of those entering the mechanic field
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video and the tool kit!
I went a different direction(not Amazon) I got the Kobalt 227 piece tool set for $99, 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sockets, ratchets, extensions, (metric and SAE) wrenches, screw drivers, allen wrenches, torx bits, and a bit driver. And 50$ to spare. I keep it in my XJ. Kind of outside of your parameters, but I felt it was a good option. And lifetime warranty. Enjoyed your presentatioin. God bless, stay well.
Husky also has a similar set for $99 around xmas time n fathers day. I picked 1 up n its been a life saver at work
Where did you get it tho?
@@zacknimal8725 Lowe’s, one would assume.
Harbor freight is a wonderful place tools aren't bad at all but affordable and almost everything in the store has a lifetime warranty
Breaker bar. When you only have one ratchet, you don't want to over torque it and strip the internals. They aren't expensive for a good one and you can get those really stubborn fasteners loose. Otherwise, not bad.
I love the Tekton line, the warranty is phenomenal. Just take a picture, send an email and your replacement is on its way before you can mail the broken one back.
I knoooooww it’s supposed to be a budget base level build but I can’t help it... *Cries in Klein Tools perfection*
My old man a great Mechanic, said purchase cheap crap to start, replace the things you destroy, you have quality tools you need, and crap you don't need. It works for me.
That is some primo advice! Start cheap and once you have some skills start adding the good stuff in
I never had pry bars for years finally after being pissed off at the side of the rd changeing a serpentine belt I broke down and got a set at Napa and I swear I use them every day
I'm impressed. I did this for my Step son a few years ago. Started with an all in one tool kit, a set of pliers and a set of screw drivers. I'm up in Canada and went with all Mastercraft tools from Canadian Tire(similar to Sear's Craftsman with a life time Warrantee). I'll have to look into the Allen and Torx Keys. I hadn't thought of those.
Are you anti- Harbor Freight ? All their hand tools come with lifetime warranty. I feel like $150 would get you pretty far at Harbor Freight.
That was my thought as well. And your weekend warrior would get more and never really have a problem with hand tools. Any power tools is another story. But I do feel that $150 would've went further.
You could do better at HF, but not everyone has one of those. Amazon can be accessed basically anywhere.
I think that's more the point of the video.
Note* I'm pretty sure he n Eric talked about HF in a UPull video b4.
Not any more man, the price at HF has really started to creep up more so since the 20% off coupon has become so limited and difficult to find. Add to that the fact that HF is not everywhere and I think Amazon is a good call.
@@sccarguy8242 HF has a website and ships, I'm not close to any. But whenever I need a one off tool I just go to the website and within a few days it's at my door. Basically the same as Amazon.
He did say that he was building the kit based what was on Amazon. He did't say anything negative about any other brand. But I agree, the $ would go a bit further and the warranty is good. But they aren't everywhere.
Old school mechanic here, those items you have for a mechanic tool bag, well...... not very good options, they durable but not really reliable. If your looking for a mechanic tool set on a budget may I suggest the Pittsburgh 301pc mechanic tool set which pretty much has everything you need especially bit sets. The down side is the tool box is kinda abit heavy. But you definitely got everything you need as for a on the road mechanic. Or I suggest the kobalt 227pc set that also has everything you need as well, or the 189pc kobalt set. Which if lucky you can get on sale for $99 dollars. Both kobalt set includes a good set of screwdrivers & torx bits & allens bit sockets. And if your lucky you can get kobalt 20pc ratchet wrench set for $20 bucks if on sale. But in reality if was on a budget I would go with the Pittsburgh 301pc mechanic tool set along with the Horusdy 32pc combination wrench set with molded carrying case & Horusdy 48pc ratcheting wrench set tool roll bag, along with a spec- ops pry bar which is only $11.00. Overall thoughtful review on bag mechanic tools, but with todays cars more complicated, so your gonna need a bit more tools then what you got in that bag.
That's a pretty comprehensive kit right there Doug. The only things that come to mind that I'd add, for the stubborn parts is a 24" breaker bar and a propane torch if you're on a budget, or MAP/PRO torch if you don't want to mess around. With these two plus your kit, there's not much you couldn't get off a junkyard car. And oddly, the little "fork-style" tool that often comes in screwdriver sets, to pry off nails I guess, is one of my most used tools: it's my pry tool, trim tool, plastic push-pin tool, and more. I never go to the JY without it!!!
Looks to me like you have a pretty solid foundation for the start of a tool kit I'm actually looking forward to seeing what Eric is going to bring to the table
I would have went with a little bigger sizes on the wrenches. Never know what you might need or when. But like you said it’s just a foundation you will always add more to the bag.
Breaker bar, pick set, adjustable crescent wrench, and channellock pliers for a starter. Still doable for under $200 especially if you skip the bag
I dont think any 2 people will agree on what they need. I have learned over the years that having a tool when you need it is more important than the name brand. I picked up multiple kits over the years including some good ones during my 15 years at Lowe's. My favorite right now is the kobalt kit in a square cube I picked up for $99 on black Friday years ago. With that and randoms from harbor freight I can do about any job.
Allen keys, scissors, measuring tape, 9/16, 10, 11, 12 maybe a 6, hammer, torque wrench with extension, (usually 3/8)
flashlight, pin vise, permanent marker, pencil, eraser, pad paper,
A breaker bar would be great to add to this kit 👍
$150 is a very tough budget. I like the pry bar but not sure if it would have made the list for me. A cheap voltmeter is probably something I would have added to the list. The rest I pretty much agree with. Can’t wait to see what Eric picks. Great video and always looking forward to the next.
*Ratcheting spanners are a must have for removing manifolds in confined engine bays* 👍
I think you did well! Additions for me would be visegrips and a medium adjustable wrench (ya nut rounder I know) but both are complimentary to the other tools in your selection. Thanks.
That Gearwrench micro driver set is a good niche tool to have. I bought it over a decade ago when working on a gas tank where my regular ratchets had way too much space between the teeth to work on the bolts. Bought this little set for that job and I've definitely broke it out a few times since then.
I built my own tool box over the years with tools I just need. A d I must say I really wish I saw this video then when I was first starting out. Thank you for the vid !
Beginners are going to limit their involvement with what they fix. Most likely it will be battery, spark plugs, belt change, oil change, tire change, brake change, air filter change, and light bulb change. Because of that, I recommend jack stands, breaker bar, large socket to fit your tires, spark plug socked and oil filter wrench. Plus, whatever specialty tool you need to do those other tasks. Other than that, interesting set. The small screwdriver is the most handy, especially with electrical connectors.
Your challenge was to only use amazon, so that does limit a little.
Nice video. I bought a 5 dollar harbor freight socket set and I’ve been very suprised with them. I’ve put a 4 foot pipe on the end of the ratchet and so far it works good.
That pry bar alignment tool is money! Do another add on video of the next 50, 75 or 100 dollar value you would add to this video. I confess my bag needs a hand cart for the yard travels.
thank you for this video man, i really appreciate it
Great concept and great kit! Main thing I would swap would be the hammer for a 2.5lb lump/club hammer, its just more useful and versatile on vehicles.
Good choices!
I am going to love this set to give to my son in law, that way I can keep my tools...
The "Pinch Bar" is a handy tool in a pinch, or more likely to pinch your fingers while prying. Very useful tool to have. Great starter kit, tens all the way!
It’s too bad Gearwrench discontinued that set.
Also, you gave me a couple ideas for my channel.
Nicely done!
I love the kit. Well balanced.
Good thought about choices, I'd much rather swopped the bit set for cheape ish allen sets and a breaker bar, because a rachet used as a breaker bar won't last as long.
Excellent selection (to go with all your excellent videos) for the intended purpose. If I were to think what to add, 2 things would come to mind. "Channellocks" as we all call them and "vise grips" of some stripe. I am good at adding, not so good at deciding what to take away. 😁 Good plier selection. In fact i just bought that Channellock plier about a week ago. But don't cringe when I say this. I was putting together a small travel bag of tools. Tools that I would not care if I lost or simply forgot to pick up somewhere. Almost exactly a year ago I purchased the Amazon 4 plier set (slip joint, needle nose, lineman and diagonal) for $15. I was pleasantly surprised for now. They will take some punishment. Tekton in general are very good budget friendly tools. Have some ratchets, pliers, impact sockets. So far so good for all.
All your choices are solid. I'm currently building my junk yard bag. Ace hardware had (Chinesium) 11 piece Craftsman socket sets for $10. The set comes in a nice blow molded case, and the included Ratchet sells for $25 at Lowe's.
Can't wait to see Eric's.
Adjustable wrench, just in case you need the odd bigger size wrench or socket, sunex makes some really nice affordable ones
Harbor freight ftw
Very interesting video! Can’t wait to see what Eric chose! This is a pretty cool idea for a cideo
I use the tacklife wrench set. Its complete and I use it every day
Very tactful Super Clean product placement
Broooo i was just looking for tools to use at a u pull 👍 ima give this a try i love your videos and i cant wait to upgrade and fix my wj
That crescent 3/8 ratchet with sockets is bothering me because it has no 8mm... lol
WHAT? no Nebraska nut rounder??
Nice job on your selections!
Excellent idea my man! I'd love to make an exclusive XJ tool bag! Nice!
Good video, in the search for tools now. I like some of the set out there for 100-150. I feel like some sets include stuff I wouldn't use.
So that's where the crescent with through sockets came from. You saw it while building this kit. I get the amazon thing, but damn I wish you'd have done harbor freight. I feel like you would have got more bang for your buck. Anyhow, nice video and since I'm sure you already have all of those tools, you can pass this kit down to a son or nephew. I think I'm going to do that for my nephews, one 1s 13 and one is 9.
This looks like a great set.
I am over in the UK and we could call that pry bar podger at the pointed end and a pinch bar at the flat end.
Also my partner is a professional basket weaver, she has no need for a screwdriver 🤣
I know this struggle. I currently have 3 sets of tools one in the garage, one in my F-150 and one in my Jeep. For the money and using Amazon I think you did very well, never thought of the Mayhew pry bar/alignment tool but I will be adding one to my set very shortly. I would be interested to see what you would do with a budget of $250, I feel that my comprehensive (overkill) tool sets that I carry have all of the sockets (mostly because I bought the 200 pc every socket from 1/4-1/2 drive on sale from home depot for $99) wrenches, multiple pliers, screwdrivers and a few other odds and ends for about $100 more. Great video+
I like your alan key solution.
Blades are always handy.
wonder if getting a screwdriver handle with the different replaceable bits would have returned a few dollars. and if yes, try to get a knipex type of raptor pliar over the old type of pliar.
The funny thing is I looked up everything you purchased for your kit and for me to buy it here in Canada the price was 315.86 lol for the exact same stuff, crazy
Re watching this to decide if I'm motivated enough to decorate my Liberty. Gonna have to go with Clark Griswold with the Co pilot buddy though... Go Bears! (I know, we're horrible this year (many other years also))
I keep the 25ish$ hyper tough mechanics tool kit in all of my cars with a few pliers and such on the side. I have done about anything the normal person will ever do with those alone. I have broken a few sockets and stripped a few bits, but for the price it is an amazing kit.
Best advice...find a project, get the essential tools needed, and start accumulating your collection. 150 all at once is going to hurt alot more than 400 over the span of a few months
what do you think about getting a racketing screwdriver with multiple bits instead of the standard ones
IDK how I feel about the aln key set. I've always needed the long necks on them.
I would of added a breaker bar
And idk if it counts but a Flashlight is a must.
I by far brake down at night more then in the day lol
In a junk yard any random pipe is a breaker bar :)
I personally have used exhaust pipe as long as I am tall because it’s all I could find. lol
I love the intention my man. I have to say, while I know this was meant to be Amazon, but I can point you to a half a dozen sets on Lowes.com that have way more tools, for $100 (all with Lifetime warranties) and the things you are missing like a bag and pry bar you can get as well for the other $50 or so dollars you saved.
Just my 2 cents, take it for what its worth, but I would rather see someone get better and a more complete set of basic Mechanic tools for less.
Still love the vid though, Thanks for the content, my snow day at work was getting a bit boring with no one here.
I'm about to buy that kobalt (3/8+1/4) 118 piece set for $45. Can't beat that and it's kobalt.....not the greatest but not the worst. They also have a 30 piece set for like $18, and they all come with cases.
Fair point for sure, those kits have a lot of “filler”, but some of that filler could fill the whole for screwdriver or other bits.
hehe. Did you take the arms off of your Carhartt jacket? That's a nice assortment. if I had a son, I would use your recommendations to set him up with that for starters. I ought to send that set to my brother-in-law. I feel like Clint Eastwood sometimes in the movie Gran Torino when people ask me why I keep a huge tool bag in my newer car. I tell them that's what happens when you acquire them over a long period of time. It's paid off many times over as I've been able to fix things on the spot or limp home.
You did good!
A good video!
Good video, well thought out stuff. However I disagree with the mini gearwrench. For torx and hex get a cheap 3/8 drive sockets with hex and torx. Something with S2 steel.
You guys should do challenges with your tool kits to show how much you can get done with them
Mark.. you are a genious. I am in!
Amazon is a okplace to shop. I did about the same tool bag idea by just going to Lowes and getting a 100 dollar 364 piece tool kit and getting a pretty dam good assortment of tool and I added a few extras as money will allow. Lowes tool kits are a great value for a beginer andhave a lifetime warranty to boot!
Good content, showing some support
That about does it ,I'd feel comfortable with the bag in a pull yard miles from anywhere, with the exception of a roll of electric tape and wire ties. (And this, however is why I have built budget problems. )
I'm surprised you didn't have a nebraska nut rounder in here! I personally would've added a leatherman wingman. Has pliers, wire cutters, scissors, a knife, a file, a flat head screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver, plus more that I'm sure I'm missing. I believe mine was around $25-$30 when I got it, but I'm sure it's more now. Definitely a great value that includes some of the things you have on here and more. I have a Wave+ that I got for Christmas this year that I use instead, but those are 2/3rds of the budget by themselves
I just got a 180 pc tool set from creascent that includes everything but the hammer and pry bar. Got the "Used" set but it looks good as new. And it was $120.
The 170 pc is good too, for $110
almost identical tool bag in my Jeep minus the pry bar, gonna remedy that one soon
Man, I'd recommend going to pawn shops! You'd be surprised how much SK, Snap-on, etc. at pawn shops!
For my first job, I did a similar toolbag but went with a set of 3 adjustable wrenches rather than an incomplete set of combination wrenches. Worked well till I could buy a complete set of wrenches.
Craftsman are good. Budget snap on for real
Good tool kit for a car just need 3/8 deep wells
How is the crescent ratchet set holding up? Debating whether to get it.
I'd have gone with a vise grip over the standard pliers, because sometimes you need the ability to clamp something. Also missing but very needed is a basic utility knife.
Keep that gearwrench 1/4 set it’s really useful
That looks like a well rounded starter set to me there Douglas.👍 Will you guys be doing the Polar Plunge this year,or is it even going on with the whole virus thing?
I’ve heard that the crescent brand has some very quality tools, but I’ve never used them. I’m partial to craftsman (I know) and Klein tools. Honestly I’ve always had pretty good luck with my craftsman stuff. I think I’ve only ever broken a 1/2” drive breaker bar, because I had a 3 foot cheater pipe on it.
All in all I think you’ve got a solid set of tools here to work on basic maintenance items. Maybe something else to add would be a good pair of gloves 🤷♂️
Think u got a good set.
Nice video. When is Eric's video coming out?
I agree with some and disagree with some. I was looking at some set of sae and metric allen and torx L keys the other day for 21 with a lifetime warranty. I actually thought of getting them for a review video, and I may still. I think for the 14.99 each of those wrench sets you could have probably gotten the stanley sae and metric set, which are actually still pretty good wrenches. Maybe a little more money but not a lot. Not bad for 150 though. That's enough to get someone started, and I'd say upgrade the socket set first and foremost with the Tekton sets. 400 bucks gets you every size without skipping and all 3 drives.
I bought the DuraTech 269 piece tool set with a tool bag from Amazon
Work gloves and a fishing magnet also a flash light as a side thought you should always budget for a beer run
Tools are expencive anywhere so you probably did well on that. It covers most things anyway
Any thoughs on swanlake garden tools? I know they are chinesse but some of their stuff looks súper legit
I would have nixed the alignment bar and gone for a 16" flathead screw driver and spent the extra money on more wrenches
I personally would have gone for slightly lesser quality but greater variety, and I would probably try to pick up at least some of this from harbor freight
Crescent wrench. Small, cheap, will get you out of a bind.
I use a tire tool as a pry bar
Personally speaking I think a set of extensions are mandatory, doubly so with the warble tip. Probably would have gotten those rather then the pry bar. I liked the torq/hex kit you picked up because it had some smaller sockets which come in handy and addresses my concern with the one 3/8 inch kit. I will be honest Other then the extensions I’m not sure what else I would have picked up over what you got. If budget would have allowed instead of the box wrenches you got I would have picked up the Amazon basics flex head ratcheting wrench set ($26 per sae/metric so only about $22 more then you paid)... not sure where I would have found the budget, but that would have been on my list for sure..... can’t wait to see Eric’s
Well I can't wait to see what Eric got in his tool bag. I'm not a big fan of Amazon. I would have probably took the hundred fifty dollars and went to harbor freight or home Depot and found some stuff. I got for a gift one year Stanley tool set I still got it and I still got the tool box and it works really good.
Go to Harbor Freight, you could have gotten all that for WAAAYYY less money.
You picked good tools but the sockets wouldn't be of much use on my Volvo. I need big metric sockets and half inch drive for bolts and T25 for alot of the smaller stuff. I would also add extensions and universal joint as I can almost never get a ratchet into the tight spaces. Like you say, it really depends what you are working on.
Since almost nothing made in the last 25 years is standard, would a larger metric set made sense. In 6 point you can use some of them on standard.
Agreed. Only things that are SAE anymore are aircraft and most equipment. But even still the average home hobby tractor is metric. Which I'm a big fan of metric don't get me wrong, it's just sad to see the inch standard dying off needlessly. I actually do work on aircraft and it's nice to be able to use the tools that have sat around forever and ever.
And like 30 dollars and ypu can get a full set husky mechanics tool set
Not bad for $150 but does that include shipping?
Your buddy won with his kit, in my opinion. He had voice grips and a better selection of pliers.
