I wish these comparison videos would end up with 2 shots of coffee from the same grind.

I miss the comparisons where drinks are made from both machines. That added a lot more value as it also provided a subjective point of view which is unobtainable anywhere else. The specs you've listed can easily be located in a user manual online, thus making these "comparisons" redundant. Just some CC, hope you do not take it the wrong way.

Really like the looks of that Delonghi. Wish it was a little higher end though.

Basic vs. Capresso EC Pro?!?! I need this comparison more than I need oxygen (jk), Gail and the SCG team! I like the pro features on both machines, but can’t decide between the two!

I have a Dedica, I can confirm that the programmable buttons are not set by time, but by water flow. It´s not super precise, but 3 or 4 grams out if you change the pressure too much from the first time you program it it´s ok for me. I set it to 30 grams, and if I change the grind size to finer, then it wont yield 30g but 28 or so. It´s amazing anyway x)
Besides that, I cut out the bottom of the portafilter and used it naked. Then I hacked it and changed the panarello to the replacement part of the gaggia classic. ;)

Nice modifications. How's your new gaggia panarello doing, is the steam pressure the same or does it build up because of the modification?

You could just buy not original non pressurized coffee filter basket on aliexpress for 4 $, as I did.

@DutchCoffeeGuy It's great. Almost a year and no issues at all. I think even the hole is too big, at least on the one I got. The tip is replaceable, so i might get a double if those are smaller in diameter.
Gaggia and Silvia (old version) would fit no problem, it´s more like a hack anyway since it's done pluging it into the steam rubber tube.

@Dmitry I did, but the portafilter is bad, and I went naked. I just cut it open, that way there is no contact and also you can see how well you tamped and distributed the coffee in the basket. Believe me, totally worth it.

I ordered a naked portafilter from capresso EZ Pro for $40 (which is the only 51mm bottomless machine you can find), and it fits in Dedica with a little modification. And I am glad Deduce is flow controlled , so for naked, I can knowledge if the grinder setting or tamping is right.
And since I prefer tradition way of steaming , I basically just take the panarallo out , so I can practice latte art. And also most of the current DeLonghi steam wand connector are same, so you can buy the part for other model of Delonghi and change on Dedica.

Is it possible to get a portafilter similar to the one on the ascaso basic that is compatible with the dedica?

on a non pressurized basket why can't you use pre ground coffee grounds? Why would it matter if I got pre ground coffee meant for espresso machines vs grinding them myself??

With non-pressurized baskets, your shot time and quality depends greatly on the combination of grind size/consistency and tamp pressure. So, beyond the loss of aroma and flavor due to the coffee being pre-ground, it is also impossible to dial it in for your machine to get correct pressure and extraction.

Gail! my coffee queen! i need advice! I'm pretty hooked on the Delonghi Dedica, and i want to buy one. But i don't know if there is a good choice of budget grinder? As far as i can see, the grinders suited for espresso, easily ends up costing more than the Dedica it self :s isn't there a cheaper way to introduce myself to the espresso world?

You have a few options. If you don't mind a little exercise and have the time, you could get a manual grinder like the Hario Skerton: www.seattlecoffeegear.com/hario-skeleton-skerton-coffee-mill
Up from there is the Baratza Encore, which will do an ok espresso grind for a pressurized portafilter like the one found on the Dedica, although it won't be the best choice if you think you might upgrade machines down the line.

Lastly there's something like the Breville Smart Grinder Pro which will be a good starter grinder and more appropriate for grinding for espresso.

Maybe i should try the Manual grinder. Then there is room for expanding with a more high-end grinder :) Thanks for det advice! :)

I have a basic and the steam is way more powerful than this. I used it a 50% to get a brutal swirl.
Furthermore, I upgraded the wand tip, use a precision basket and dialled in the pressure and temp. This is now just below the Rancillio Silva in espresso quality.
