So you just picked up a Canon 70D but now what? I created this guide to help you get a jump start on using your camera for stills and video.
In this video you're going to figure out what each button means and how to use it. I give you my tips for how I would set up this camera for stills and video.
The rest is up to you, once you have the basics down it's all about getting out there and shooting. The more you shoot, the more you learn the better you become.

Bought this camera second hand, upgraded from my old 20D. BIG JUMP in all the things this camera can do. Went out to take some photos at dusk. Accidentally hit something (no clue what), and the camera wouldn't write to the card anymore. Panic! I reset to factory defaults but then what? Totally confused until I found this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me set this camera back up.
Thanks Jared. I've had my 70D for close to a year and was basically using it as an expensive point and shoot. I've finally been getting into knowing my camera and I really enjoyed your instructional approach. The use of the inset screen is brilliant and helps underscore the learning. I found pausing the video and exploring the points helped solid the learning. Once again excellent job and thank you
Thanks for such a thorough explanation. I just purchased this camera yesterday and this helped a lot
You're welcome. check out the beginner guide as well. FroKnowsPhoto.com/guide

+Jared Polin ---- SALES PITCH SALES PITCH! It IS a GREAT GUIDE THOUGH! The FRO-MAN did it REALLY WELL! I give him 256 BONUS POINTS on the GUIDE! Well worth the dough! IF it cam WITH some WARM BAGELS and some TASTY "SCHMEEEEREEEE" it would definitely be HEAVEN in yer hands! REALLY!
Like the way you have not edited the little mistakes you do..that really makes this tutorial natural..
Thanks!!!
Very helpful to someone who is just learning to use their 70D. I was so pleased after the first time I used my camera at a sports event, but the quality was missing from my subsequent portraits. I had a feeling my ISO settings were partly to blame, but walking me through the menu helped to learn a bit more about the mechanics of the camera. Thanks!
Can someone please explain to me why a video that is supposed to be focused around how-to use the camera and the camera's operations has a small little portion of the window focused on the camera and the larger portion focused on the dude just sitting there messing with it?
I was thinking the same thing. Glad you said it.
+Colleen Elizabeth ---- FRO KNOWS ............ so sadly he assumes we ALL know. This was one of his WEAKEST Ya'll Tube videos to date. Sorry 'FRO MAN' - but it be TRUE! FREE OR NOT ..... ya screwed up.
lmao this is the exact reason y I clicked off the video & why I went to the comments seeing if anyone else felt the same. No hate Fro but I CAN NOT see that tiny little screen.
Great rundown. Shooting stuff for the NHL Awards tomorrow with this camera and now I feel a lot more comfortable
Hey Jared. I just got my new Canon 70D. I am stoked to have it, I wanted to have that focus in film that you mentioned in your reviews. I got the stock lens but also bought a better L series f4 lens. Thanks for your reviews buddy. You rock these videos.
Steve
Jared, I would also love to know the answer to this question!
same here
The lens he has on in the video *looks* like a 40mm prime lens, AKA "pancake". There is an IS-STM version of that as well, if you plan to do video. I can't recommend the STM enough for video work. I have a 18-135 IS-STM and the difference in sound and smoothness is amazing.
Thanks Jared, you've made my mind up. I have a 1100D, had it for a eighteen month, when the weather is great I'm snapping away in the sun or doing long exposure at night but macro & portraits inside when it raining heavy. I have also done party's,kids party's & a few christening, people have given me positive feed back but more importantly from other photographers that have a few decades of experience & from close friends, the kind that gives you the raw truth good or bad! So, I need to step up a level! So the 70D looks like what I need next.
Thanks again.
The RUclipser who makes the longest videos!
I just bought one in 2022 and now i’m here.
Heeeeey! I met you at youtube space and this totally helped me. Kudos frooooo!
I appreciate your knowledge & teaching sir. Just bought this cam. for my wife. Thanks again, for this was great. My wife & I knew nothing! Now we know basics b/c of you. Have a great Christmas sir.
It has the option to "release shutter without card" if you're not using the camera for long periods of time. The manual says it's good to press the shutter button occasionally so all the mechanical parts remain in working order.
One additional note: The white dot next to the red dot on the lens mount is for EF-S lenses, which are only compatible with crop bodies.
Touch Shutter lets you take pictures by touching the live view screen while in live view. Useful for lefties and difficult angle shots etc. a works with autofocus so you can just touch what you want a picture of.
Nice vid. I already bought accessories for my 70D. I'll be getting the camera soon. I've been playing with it in stores, and I fall in love with it each time! Hopefully I'll order one by next week!
hey man i have 70d and its really good camera > im planning to work on studio in future i know many photographers use 70-200mm for portrait but thats work very well with full frame slr > so can you tell me your opinion about using the crop factor im afraid if the studio too small and that will be useless and what the distance you think beween me and subject . kind regards
Just got my 70d today. Can't wait to take pictures :)
Awesome video, haven't got my 70d yet but already learning a lot from tutorials like this
Thanks Jose,I was tempted to flip a coin,I love both cameras, had a play with both and they feel great in the hand.
Jared, I found this video to be really useful. I've just purchased my first DSLR - having become very interested in photography. Your video has given me great clarity, but of course I will read the manual too.
Thank you for sharing.
David
This is So good and useful , bad that I have got a 1200D that is a bit different , when I am new to DSLR , it's a bit hard to follow , cause I also don't have time to go through all the manual
Hey Jared, thanks for posting this video. After months of busting my @$$ doin freelance film production work. I bought my first DSLR yesterday. Being a Canon fan from the beginning of my photography, and video work. I went with the Canon EOS 70D. I couldn't be any happier with this powerful workhorse of a camera. I'm looking forward to learning with this camera. Thank you again for posting this video and helping me make the right decision on which DSLR to go with. Have a good one.
Just on the video quality - ALL-I vs IPB - as Jared corrected at the end ALL-I is a higher quality recording that generates a much larger file size, if you're doing quick videos for RUclips there is nothing wrong with IPB however for anything you do professionally ALL-I is a must - especially if you are going to do color correction. In the weekend I shot about an hour and a half to 2-hours of video in ALL-I at 30FPS, this chewed up a little more than 50GB including around a dozen RAW images I also shot so do take plenty of cards - personally when I'm shooting video, I don't leave the house with less than 2x 32GB cards but preferably I have upwards of 100GB of cards on me at any given time, especially if I don't have a laptop to offload data onto.
It is not RAW video but think of it in a similar context to RAW photo vs JPEG, the more compressed the file is the less you can do with it later. Finally, if you're really serious about color correction install a flat picture profile such as the Technicolor CineStyle preset that gives a really nice flat image for post color correction.
Once MagicLantern is released for the 70D it will provide a full set of tools for creating video including focus peaking that I *really* miss - especially for run-and-gun shooting.
Lost the manual in less than a week after buying the camera....thanks for this Jared...
Nice intro to my new camera. I stuck through till the end of the video. Funny guy!
You can easily change the focus point when you press the focus button next to the shutter release. And the wheel.
23:00 Lol Jared. Hit the button next to the shutter to change focusing modes. Touching works too. Your reaction is priceless!
Shutter release when no card is inserted is for when your doing studio work and files are being sent straight to computer.
Nice walkthrough, I sorted some issues for me
My perfect video setup would be a 70D, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6, 50 f/1.8, a Rode mic, and a fluid head tripod. But sadly, I don't have $1,800 to spend. Sucks being 15 and not allowed to work. -_-
that'S life
Can you afford it now?
Hello, I see a small delay in displaying my 70d. alone on the screen, when playing all right. Is it normal that small delay ?. I come from a t5i and I see no lag. You could tell me if it is normal 70d ?. Greetings!
IT was so good information to learn .
The over-shoulder shots of the camera are awesome! Do you just use a tall tripod and a fluid head?
That's Steven shooting over the shoulder.
Really nice video, thanks man.
THANKS MAN, JUST GOT MINE!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Immensely helpful to me. :)
hello everyone what do you advise me to take?
( canon 70d with 24-105m ) or ( canon 70d with 18-135 and 50mm 1.4 )
Wow, did I just hear you throw out the Nintendo Contra code? Great tutorial. Thank you.
Hi, can you do a video on the canon eos 60d. Just a detailed video on how to get the best out of the video quality whilst recording, please
Great video I appreciate all you do to help us that are starting out with a dlsr or just getting started with photography I love your personality and the way you tech and I feel like your reviews are fair keep up the great work
Goodness, I've been saving up for one of these and can't wait!
WorldTUDown did you end up getting it? Lol
@@LoVE.B. Yes I did!
Awesome video!
Like it, All I wish is the free Beginner's Guide ahahah :)
For Christmas gift ahahah :)
It's very much helpful for me thanks dear.
I am also trying to decide between this camera or the d7100
im thinking of selling my 5d3 for a 70d and a car
Oh only buy one today nice to see your video 🤣 I'm late 8 year only 😎
i have 70D and is very good with L Lense 24-105
Maybe you can change the selected single focus point by pressing the blue +zoom button and then change it...works on my 650D :)
Forgot to mention I'm upgrading from a 650d but only own 50mm 1.8ii so it won't matter if I change to nikon as I need to buy lenses anyway
what do u mean u will need to buy lenses anyway? you can use that 50mm on 70D no problem. But do you really need to upgrade anyway? 650d is a good camera so I dont thing upgrading to 70d is a good idea, better invest in some good glass, or if you really want to upgrade go full frame.
You are really cool Jared thank you and keep up the good work
I'm 1:06 seconds in... you have really nice skin!
I'm a newbie, this is my first camera. Thanks for this, it was super helpful!
great job man, enjoyable and informative.
Excellent, thanks!
Very nice video, picked up a few tips again! i have this camera as well, still a lot to learn though :)
Focusing is sweet on this camera, especially with those STM lenses.
Great video very informative I enjoy these videos you put out there just wandering if you could share any tips on shooting black and white with a Nikon d800
touch shooter display allows you to take photo when you touch display
Great Vid Jared, Thanks.
Great job! You are appreciated! I am using my 70D for my company Fresno Appraisal Service-- House, landscape photos etc. Your video really cut to the chase I think things sink in better when see vs trying to read the manual. Especially when Canon only had the Spanish manual in my box. (really) No worries I pulled it up on line - printed it off and put it into a 3 ring binder. I took notes from your video and also added them to my binder. (ocd- do you think?) Nah -- just old and can't remember. Once again great job - Many thanks Terre
Added to favorites
I really really need help I can't decide between this or the d7100,what would you say is the better option
This saved my butt! Thanks for this video 😍👌🏻
kindly tell what do these modes actually do as i dont know aperature, iso n anything related to camera m totally new to it it will be a great help if u consider my comment plz
Was busy watching ur hair turn green Behind you. Funny
thank you so much sir ! what is the button to take pictures with the screen because i can not twist my hand to take it to my eye !
No proximity sensor so not sure how the lcd turns off when you put it to your eye...
Is there a way to achieve the same type of slow motion we get from our iPhones (120fps) when working with 60fps?
Sadly, no. :(
Jared can you do a video on focusing your camera on a certain place?
uh, just use the focus points to set the general area you want to be in focus and fire away.
Shayne McGowan Uh, well are you meant to just keep pressing the shutter half way until it focuses on the point you want?
haylz27
if you want a certain place to focus on, turn of autofocus, and manually set your focus point! or am i missunderstanding something?
Hi, I bought the Canon 70D and now I want to buy lents for it. I want to choose from tamron 18-200 or sigma 18-200, which do you think is better? What You recommend for me?
Can you do a Users Guide for 6D? Thanks!
I already bought it, (it's already 2 years..) I was just hope for some tips..
Funny that this a beginners guide which also recommends that you should always read the manual at least once.... Judging by the number of mistakes and "erm, not sure what that does", I'd say this guy should pay heed to his own advice.
When you say "this guy" don't you understand I am that guy. Call me by name not this guy.
Jared Polin also funny how this guy completely ignores the point I'm making.
+Jared Polin --- FACE IT JAY-ROD ..... ya screwed the pooch on this one dude. Too many, "WTF is THIS all about?" moments. Ya may be the PROS PRO - but dude you boned the pooch so deep this time her nearly passed out! Admit it .......... you had NO idea what MANY of the screens were intended to set! It be OK! Even the "Master of Disaster" screws up once in awhile!
he is soo blockheaded
lol this troll has 123 subs, ignore him bro......fro.....love the content thanks !
I think you are wrong about the sensor... You have to touch the Q button to touch anything on that main screen. I have owned several Rebels with the sensor and you can clearly see ir around the eye piece, the 70D has no such thing. Also the screen doesn't turn off when you put your face up to it and there's nothing in the settings about a sensor, just to turn off the screen when you half press the shutter. I think they expect most consumers of this grade of camera to use the top deck or view finder info displays and only use the main LCD for reviewing shots/video to save battery by keeping the main LCD off most of the shoot.
One final thought.............. "A crap load of MENUS ..... all in a row ..... and We can TOUCH whatever WE want"! Just like Sally McPhearson down at the 7-11! TOUCH ANYTHING! Sally ROCKS! The FRO-MAN ROCKS! Ya' gotta spend the time learnin' the camera so spend the time with THE BEST OF THE BEST! The FRO-MAN makes it FUN! Just like SALLY!
NIGHT ALL! NURSIE IS HERE WITH MY 'MEDS' SO I GOTTA GO!
For first timer. My camera does not show the options you have in menu. Its a Canon EOS 70D could it be I was sold a gray?
Thanks for posting, however you skip several settings.
Just got a 70d to upgrade from a t3i

sumit
at 3:18 your fro glows green
That amazing will come back
Wat top function dial will u recommend to use for photography without flash? (Other than auto)
please i have get problem with my canon 70D,anytime i increase the aperture a form of black stain appear on the image and the background. what should i do?
Jared.... love, love your work! I just have a question about the shooting stills with this camera. Do you adjust any of the setting in the picture styles while shooting in raw? such as the contrast or sharpness? or since your shooting in raw it does not really make a difference. Thanks
Hello I have a canon 70d and I've had it for about a year now and I was using it a few days ago and I was recording and out of nowhere every time I pushed the record bottom or play bottom it wouldn't work , the camera turns on just the bottoms won't work when I push them.
Any idea why ?
is flash will pop up whenever we press it ?
if battery is low and it show the blinging battery sing but not show tha display what is it mean
I just ordered my 70D my question is can you adjust settings such as ISO and aperture whilst filming in live view or only when recording is stopped?
Thanks
can anybody tell me how the grid and the lights come through the viewfinder on the 70d. I know that previous versions use a focusing screen, but how does the 70d do it electronically????
What about the lock switch?
Hi Jared, How many frame-per-seconds(24,30,60) did you use to shoot this video? Also what camera/lens you used?
hi, i dont know, but i cant set my camera to the quick control screen mode... i press the Q button, but it doesn't work... i want to see the shutter speed... someone can help me?
Jared, I bought the 70D from costco for the wife and I. How do I get the most from this package?
Will you be doing a video like this for a nikon d7100?
Hi Jared,
Is this camera better than d7100. I am interested both in video n still photography. Could pls suggest, which is better?
fro what do you think of the focusing issues for stills with this camera?
I didn't know about the using touch screen to change things on the menu until I saw this video-- so I clicked menu and the touch screen doesn't work by touch..Unless you click Q first. This is the kind of thing that is not in the User Guide and was not clearly stated in this video- he said it really fast, once, while saying 100 other things at the same time instead of emphasizing it. . I read the book twice, watch all the video tutorials - and the menus half the time work a different way (and the dial is not on an auto setting). I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, I google it and find nothing, I read the page in the user guide and nothing. Sometimes you can use the arrows to move around and other times doing the exact same thing the arrows do nothing. Is there something that explains all these nuances?
hopefully i didn't miss it. but is the adobe profile for the 70d available yet? or is the only option still to use the dng converter?
Where is your assistant, Steven, filming from?!? on a ladder or something?
What is the difference between the two large JPEG options?
Thank You
