Quick tip: if you want 30fps you need to select NTSC rather than PAL. Apologies for being late to the party but I only just got a like-new 70D as a backup camera.
Hi Grant - from a fellow Aussie, (hope I got that right as you might be a kiwi) - I just want to give you a HEARTFELT THANK YOU for this brilliant short instructive video on how to set up a Canon camera to shoot videos for dummies. And that is me! We have owned one for 2 years and took lots of photos with it, but few videos. And today with your instruction I got it set up, managed to download my first video to i-movie, do some basic editing, export the bloody thing, and upload it to Facebook, and it looks just fine!!!!!!! Thanks mate. Very grateful.
I just bought my cannon 70D for my RUclips cooking Channel. And I was so intimidated with how many options it has. I have an old Cannon Rebel which is so easy to use. Thisone is a big Jump! I read the manual from A to Z which I NEVER DO normally!! And took my first video with this Queen of Intimidation...The video sucked.. I Google and watch your video. YOU had my full attention after throwing that annoying manual🤪😂👍👍. You helped me A LOT. I will take a mother video tomorrow and see how it goes with the settings you showed.
Thanks for this tutorial as has given me the help and confidence to move off auto and onto manual! Heading off on a trip to Finland and will be using manual based on this........
Very nice video, Grant. Thanks very much. I like the 70D generally, but I'm quite disappointed by the manual. These instructions quickly put me on the right track.
Thanks for your input . I have a new Canon 70 d which I learning about settings for RUclips so hopefully that will help . I'll try it out tomo on a small video 😎
Some heads up tutorials before I get into all these things, the pics taking and video shooting and I can say that it was pretty helpful still after all these years, therefore thankyou so much!!
Thank you so much! This was such a help, right out of the box. Plus, my husband is an Aussie, so it was like having my brother-in-law help me with my camera. Thanks so much.
I am a film and television production media student at the moment I have been looking for about 2 months to help me find the perfect settings for my camera and by god you have saved my life this is going to help me so much with my college course. You have solved my lighting problem with this I only have the sound problem now I have the Videomic pro rode mic have you got a video explaining the best settings for this because that would be highly appreciated again thank you keep up the great work.
This helps a lot for taping auditions because I've been shooting in Auto and you can't adjust the sound level input in that mode so I was dealing with a lot of hiss.
Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. Perhaps you can do a video about the Picture Style and show examples of video with different settings without any Post edits.
G'day Grant. Glad I found you. You had me when you threw the instructions away! Just bought your course for the 70D.... Great deal! I just can't believe I paid actual money to learn anything from a bloody Kiwi. Thanks mate.
Really great! Just what I was looking for. I shoot with the 70d with a EFS-24 and my video is a bit cluttered and unsharp. I will try out your settings!
Totally freakin badass. I was actually googling for ages to find how to change my "internal mic into 25%", as I am using the Rode Pro. There is no tutorial on this and a keyword search comes up pretty empty. So I'd definitely add it in your keywords, that you include the option where to find it. Thank you thank you thank you Grant. You just upped my Vlogging game.
Great video. I'm getting ready to buy this camera and this told me exactly what I needed to know! Thanks! I look forward to checking out your other videos too.
+All About WindowsHopefull this video helped you but if you're still having trouble I've got a more comprehensive course on the 70D over at my website grantjohnston.me/store/shooting-video-with-the-canon-70d/
Waiting for my 70D to arrive.Have previously used a Canon XM2 camcorder. Only SD but so easy to use when compared to using a DSLR. But your video will greatly assist, thank you. Have you used the non-manual LIVE view for video?
I love this video and have set up my 70D as you suggested but, how do I set up the other side, the camera side to get the best still photographs I can get from my camera. Thanks! I've been a subscriber for a fairly good while. Any information you can send would be great!
Excellent work!! & perfect to use as a new project template to base my “experimental” settings I’ve always randomly adjusted other than the big guys (aperture, iso, res, etc). However I only came to see some sample clips which I think is a crucial mistake!! We are visual artists after all.
You need to disable the wi-fi on the first menu shown as well as movie recording does not work with wi-fi enabled. Video could do with some more details on setting exposure / ISO /f stop, I was looking for settings for nigh time video.
This video is excellent. What setting do you use when you want to maximize your focus range? Do you want the maximum F-stop like you would when shooting landscape photos?
Grant, any ideas on what I need to do for fireworks? Its one of those things that are very hard to test but once a year and I have made mistakes the last two years running. I'd quite like to get it right this time.
+Simon D Yates They can be tricky, from experience it's all about setting a manual exposure you know will work on the fireworks when they are going off, I also found it best to preset a frame to focus on where you think the action will happen and stay wide until you get your eye in. Good luck.
This video, is the settings you set, is it good for concert videos? I'm going to a concert soon and i'm trying to find the right settings. Any suggestions?
Hi Grant, just wondering after I've set these settings, can I switch back to Av mode? So that my shutter speed, iso, white balance etc is retained and I just want to be able to contol aperture? Best regards!
I mix up the lens depending on what I'm shooting but use the kit 18-135 stm lens quite a bit. You certainly don't have to use STM lens but they are quiet if you are recording audio on the in-built or a separate top-mic and using auto-focus. Some lens have noisy auto-focus but you can get around this be getting the mic off the camera or turn off the auto-focus. Cheers
I am starting to use my 70d for video I plan on doing events with a lot of people like choirs, sporting events, I was listening to your tips I'm planning on getting a external mic how often should I use it
I just get the 70d and I have a question... If i set 1080p 24fps, why he let me choose the shutter speed too? how is that possible? I can film at 24fps with a shutter speed 1/120???? i'm getting lost
As soon as he tossed the manual across the room, I decided to tune in lol
Quick tip: if you want 30fps you need to select NTSC rather than PAL. Apologies for being late to the party but I only just got a like-new 70D as a backup camera.
A no bullshit tutorial. Thanks mate
Very very helpful. Bought my 70d today ( my first ANY camera ever ) Your explanation is a breeze. Thank you !

Glad to hear, good luck with your shoot
Very instructive.. I have the manual but found this video easier to follow ...I need to sort my 90 D now
.
Very nice video, Grant. Thanks very much. I like the 70D generally, but I'm quite disappointed by the manual. These instructions quickly put me on the right track.

Superb video. Straight to the point and zero bollocks. Thanks. Subscribed.

My fiance just got me a brand new Canon 70D and this video was very helpful!
Thank you so much! This was such a help, right out of the box. Plus, my husband is an Aussie, so it was like having my brother-in-law help me with my camera. Thanks so much.

I liked it so much, I bought the course. Thank you again.

This helped me a lot! I got my 70D without a manual, so your video was perfect since it was recording for very little time. Thanks Grant!
I actually just got the 7D and while there are some differences this was a great tutorial. Thanks so much!
you had me at throwing away the instruction manual. good video. thanks
Thank you for sharing this info. Very informative! My camera is in the air somewhere and I should receive it on Wednesday. Can't wait!!!
This helps a lot for taping auditions because I've been shooting in Auto and you can't adjust the sound level input in that mode so I was dealing with a lot of hiss.
That was Awesome learnt so much in short space instead of reading the Manuel
This video helped me so much! I'm such a newbie to this I didn't even know how to put the camera on the video setting, lol. :D Thank you!!
I'm borrowing a 70D for a video shoot and I had to get it setup for video. Thanks Grant!
Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. Perhaps you can do a video about the Picture Style and show examples of video with different settings without any Post edits.
Hi - yes I'm just going through the picture styles at the moment and will put a video up with some examples in the next couple of weeks. Cheers
Thank you for your help. Very insightful!
very fun when you throw away the manual.

Excellent work!! & perfect to use as a new project template to base my “experimental” settings I’ve always randomly adjusted other than the big guys (aperture, iso, res, etc). However I only came to see some sample clips which I think is a crucial mistake!! We are visual artists after all.

thanks Grant you are cool
thx for the tips!
How do I use the flash while I'm taking video? I'm new with the camera and it won't let me shot video with the light on. I use manual
Thanks for the info, can you talk about the settings for audio of you were using a rode video mic pro?
very nice video man but what country of America you mean maybe Brasil Peru Colombia
This video, is the settings you set, is it good for concert videos? I'm going to a concert soon and i'm trying to find the right settings. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the insight 👍
Hi Grant, just wondering after I've set these settings, can I switch back to Av mode? So that my shutter speed, iso, white balance etc is retained and I just want to be able to contol aperture? Best regards!
Thanks for the video, Grant. What lens are you using? Does an STM really matter?
I mix up the lens depending on what I'm shooting but use the kit 18-135 stm lens quite a bit. You certainly don't have to use STM lens but they are quiet if you are recording audio on the in-built or a separate top-mic and using auto-focus. hola queria saber si el curso que vendes lo tenes subtitulado ya que soy de argentina y no domino tanto el ingles saludos y gracias martin
I am starting to use my 70d for video I plan on doing events with a lot of people like choirs, sporting events, I was listening to your tips I'm planning on getting a external mic how often should I use it
+Ebony Gray If possible use I will just about always try and use it as external mics will generally always be better than the built in mic.
Hi Grant - what editing software do you use for video?
Thank you
Outstanding. tahnks!
yes sir thanks for details
I just get the 70d and I have a question...
If i set 1080p 24fps, why he let me choose the shutter speed too? how is that possible? I can film at 24fps with a shutter speed 1/120???? i'm getting lost
Hi, Thanks for your video. When you capture the video in Premiere (I have the CS4 version) which setting you use?
