Robert.....You are such a wise man...your simple-to-follow advice to all Volvo owners is an absolute God Send!
(This problem did not apply to me.... I don't have the "White Block" Volvo)...... (Mines the V8)
But I was nodding all the way through watching that explanation.
What you were saying made absolute good sense.
We all know water boils at a higher temperature, when under pressure.... that's why the systems are sealed.
But at a normal operating temperature of the engine....you should be able to slowly open the cap....without drama.....
If not...as you so quite rightly say......you have a problem.
    Brilliantly explained Robert. Take care.

Twenty years ago i have made a training to become a proffesional mechanic at a small vw and audi dealer (but the quallity of those older volvos is so much better than these vag-cars). My v70 was increasingly drinking coolant for years with no real change in performance. It's crazy how long these engines run on for with a compromised gasket. Now however, its popping out white smoke going down hills and boiling coolant. I did the test in your video which confirms it....so, it's sadly time to move it on. It did 195k miles, I bought it at 108k and it has been the best car I've ever owned. Thanks for the videos Robert, I'd have scrapped it years ago if it wasn't for your help. Just another of your excellent videos Robert, thank you. If you are ever over in Ireland, let me know. I owe you some beer!
I wasn't aware that the coolant was low and I was out in the car (2005 C70) at the weekend. As I drove up the hill, I felt pity for the guy in front who I felt had a problem with his engine. Turns out it was me. The car stalled and the smell I was getting was was from the dirt and oil residue on the overheating engine. Like you said, I got no warning. The coolant filler tank had a small crack where the pipe connects. When I opened the bottle, I found it was empty of coolant. Not a drop.
I checked the oil filler cap for 'creme' and was happy to see that it looks like the fluids had not mixed. I poured 6 liters of water into the coolant filler bottle over the next hour with just a tiny bit of hope... "Maybe it has a killer switch or something that shuts the engine down when it has no water.. And if I put water back in, it will get me home!"
So, I reckon it's exactly as you say.. combustion gasses getting into the cooling system.
But I have one question for you. I reckon that if the water has gotten into the oil, it means it will be much worse. Would you reckon that the 6 liters I put in would have gotten mixed with other fluids? Could water have gotten into the cylinders?
I can't check anything until I get the car back.
The engine was turning over but wasn't firing. I turned it over to check that it wasn't crocked, not to run it. It seemed that there was no fuel or spark as there was nothing. I have no reason to think that the fuel or spark were not getting through so all I could think was that water might have gotten into the cylinder and prevented a spark.
    Many thanks,
    John
    Ireland

@@RobertDIY Yes Robert. I was wondering if the water that I had managed to get into the coolant reservoir could have crossed over after the gasket failed. I reckon not. Good news is that I have sourced a donor car with low mileage (it has a damaged roof) and I plan to swap the engine out. This option also suits because I needed a replacement steering rack and control module so I'm a happy chappie all round!
Thanks for getting back to me 👍

Reminds me of the video yesterday. Is an informative and very good video. Hope the cylinder head isn't warped. If is and can be grinded down and be smooth with enough aluminum on the head are in? I think Red Baron has around 170k - 200k. If have to replace the head might be okay or replacing the engine. Not sure a used engine with low mileage would be okay? A remanufactured engine even if you did the work in a garage yourself would be a lot of work. Might need a computer to reset the computer in the car?

I took your advice, drove it for 5-10 minutes, and she lost oil. I do not know where, the oil light came on, rattle noise are low rpm torque. I never got it to high rpms. Prior I did, she took off like a rocket. SO, I am hella confused here. I am 100% positive, I have more then enough old hoses that need to be replaced. My concern is if the engine is damaged. I did NOT get an engine check light, just a oil light before getting home. The same radiator hose broke Again, so that is a priority replacement. I hope just getting these hoses replaced keeps this car from having a leak issue, but the other concern is if the engine may have gotten damaged. I am going to do a compression test, and Leak test (if I can), and get a verification. I watched a video on pulling this head ... and well, it almost seems better to get another engine, and fully rebuild that and swap the damaged one onto the transmission and install that. and figure out what to do with the damaged engine (maybe repair that and get a good sale on that and recooperate some money.)

@@RobertDIY Thanks for your reply and help. I have some new information to add in hopes that it might help someone reading this in the future. So today was the first day it hit over 60 degrees in a long time in my area. This warmer temperature put more pressure on the cooling system which finally revealed where the leak is. The leak was where the heater hose connects to the snap firewall heater hose elbow fitting, the barb area was broken. Anyway when the system is under heavy pressure it would start leaking at this location, the more pressure in the system the more pronounced the leak.

Hi Robert DIY, I did this test and the coolant went over the top of the reservoir but then came back down again. Is this a head gasket problem? I did a combustion leak test, and it didn't find any combustion gas coming out of the coolant reservoir (the blue testing fluid remained blue). Do you have an explanation for this? Thank you for all you do for us Volvo lovers.

Help??? My car has all the symptoms of a blown head gasket, but the Co2 chemical tester says there is no exhaust in the coolant. it pumps the water out, and has excessive pressure. Dash temp gauge says it's not overheating. I took the thermostat out for the test..so it's not a problem. I have tried two caps...both do the same thing. What else can cause this????

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  9 месяцев назад

Man, I don't know. Air in the system. If you get all of the air out of the system and it still builds pressure, it likely has a bad head gasket. I don't know if all of those chemical testers are accurate. But if your coolant system is building pressure, it likely has a bad head gasket.

Hey Robert, I watched your video on the blown head gasket. I am pretty sure I have the blown head gasket you speak of. I recently installed a new radiator as the old radiator sprung a leak. Not long after I got the new radiator, I started getting the "coolant low" message. I worked out that it is possibly a blown head gasket and I am not allowed to do any more expensive repairs to my 2006 XC90 with 156k miles on the clock. I am wondering how you feel about using a "permanent" head gasket repair fluid in the cooling system? The Volvo runs like new after the initial startup where I think water is getting past the gasket into the combustion chamber and spoiling one of the cylinders momentarily. How do you feel about the quick fix for getting the car to go another couple thousand miles? Thanks Steve

Chris: No. What is happening there is that the pressure in the system cannot rise; Therefore, the temperature will rise:
(At sea level: Water boils at 100°C or 212°F .... But on a high mountain top, water will boil below these temperatures.)
This is why the system is sealed.... Seal the system. Pressure is the key. Let the pressure rise, due to heat rise, but the water boils much later.
This is the point of Roberts Video: You should be able to remove the rad/header cap.....at the normal operating range of the engine.
      If not...you have a problem.
As Robert states: If it don't boil over in a minute...stop worrying! 😊

Robert, I just commented on another video of yours. I bought a 99, non-turbo, 2.5 volvo for a great deal. I only have 500$ in a car with 150,000 miles. But it had been wrecked, when it was wrecked. It cracked the coolant reservoir. I tried to seal with with ultra Grey with no success. You were exactly right, after a about 10,000 miles I got lazy about topping it off one day because I did not want to stop on interstate in Atlanta, and I ran it too hot. I believe I screwed the head. I tried to cool it off, top it off and limp it home but by the time I pulled in the driveway I can no longer get it to run at all. Can you give me some insight on what all I may have damaged beyond the obvious head warping. And do you know if the head is the same with and without a turbo? It is the same block and head right? Just the intake will be different because of the turbo right?
Sorry to bother you, I just need some advice. Thank you robert.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  2 года назад +1

The na engine is not the same as a turbo engine. Turbo engines are usually built tougher but have lower compression ratios. If your vehicle has any VVT hubs then you need to get a head or engine with the VVT hubs. If your engine does not have VVT hubs and both cam sprockets are naked geared sprockets, you can use a non-turbo engine from 94 all the way through to 99. However if your engine has coil packs on it you want to make sure that stuff is handled properly with the cams.
My guess is you warped the head and possibly warped or crack the block. You won't know that until the head is removed and you check the block to see if it's true. If the block is warped I would definitely just do it entire engine swap.

does the type of coolant affect how/if the system is leaking combustion gas? My 2005 volvo v50 t5. I did this test, and I am not getting a FLOOD over like in the 1st red car. It pretty much does what the 2nd car is doing. I had the engine running, rev'd to 2k, held it there for 3 min's. Engine temp got to the middle. I stepped out with engine running, checked fluid in resivour, it looked the same. I went back and rev'd to 5k for 30 seconds. Engine temp stayed in middle mark. I went to check the resivour, slightly opened the cap to check for pressure surge, it was calm. I let the car sit, 5 min, then restarted, and I see on the resivour, which mine has two lines at the front face of the resivour, the line most closest to the engine, is the first line to break. it broke at two points, at a mate clip behind the radiator infront of the airbox. The second was from wearage rubbing of a loose air pipe bracket. It caused the clip that goes to the head, above the transmission, just right side of MAF sensor (just right below that). That clip was damaged broken. I ended up replacing the WHOLE tubing with a straight flex rubber hose to the resivour. That incident, the engine temp got 3/4 to red. I also had a low oil light flicker, which I was confused over. I was able to get the car home. She made ALOT of rattle noise, which I am believing now is from the odd fuel map that LIMP MODE provides. Once home, the OIL was completely changed, topped with 6 quarts. Drove the car, it was doing fine, then the Heater hose by the fire wall broke on the plastic connector. I did not get any warning of this, til the engine went into LIMP MODE. I had a huge power loss, the car would not rev over 2k, and had a rattle like the lifters were rattleing. I did not check closely if their was a knocking. But at Orielly, I was able to get a OBD2 reader on, and the Crankshaft sensor positon was faulting, same with knock sensor. I watched another video about sensor's, and things like water CAN cause sensor's to act inappropriately, and trigger a LIMP MODE. Now what really gets me is the OIL Low light. When I was at the store, the oil level on the dip stick was the same level as when the oil was replenished from the change.. I ended up putting another quart of oil, when I read a concern stating these engines are to have between 7.5 to 6 quarts of oil. Hmm, So I looked up to find out what level of oil causes low oil light. I heard from multiple Mech's, that Volvo's are very picky with low oil. You don't want to press long on a low oil issue. I believe that because Fife Volvo in WA state, screwed up my mother's 2004 S40, which resulted in the engine knocking. The Mech some how did not complete the oil change process, and the car was short and leaked oil. The smell nearly put my mom in the hospital. The engine at first drove fine, then a yank feel while driving, and then HUGE loss of power with a deeper rattle noise. That Dealership basically frauded my mother, then pushed to get her to by a NEW car, when the reality is they should fixed her car. We filed a complaint with Sweden Volvo, and their Rep's came and took the car into a detailed inspection. A mech at that location quit, and weeks later their Mech shop had an explosion. No surprise on that, you can smell the fumes from that shop. Story goes, a shop light switch was the cause of the spark, the cause of fumes, is obviously poor ventilation. So back to my car. After clearing those codes, the car started, and drove just like nothing happened. I am concerned of either warped head, or lightly spun baring, which will lead to a bad expensive situation. I had that happen on a 1991 Integra, did not even realize til the rattle down below got out. So I am trying to avoind causing further damage to the volvo. When I just did a start up, rev up, warm up, all systems seem ok, except for Airbag warning code. What I am concerned is a fuel smell from the resivour. I know with the Integra's, when the gasket leaks, the gasket at the combustion to coolant is where it breaks. I never had a head gasket fully break to be directly expelling/breathing from/into the engine ... What I got was that special color in the oil and coolant. I knew then that I would be in for an engine overhaul. This Volvo does not produce that odd color oil/coolant mixture, at least not yet. So my question is, beside the coolant test with the blue fluid breathing the coolant vaps. Is there an easier way to verify a blown gasket? My thoughts are compression test. I have a kit, and right am waiting for the car to cool complete, then pull the ignition coils and spark plugs. I am guessing I SHOULD see PSI around 135psi for 9:1 compression cylinder/piston. If the numbers deviate, then where it deviated is where the gasket is broken. Now for WARPED head check, how can I do that without having to take it apart and line up a straight to the block/head? Also, right now, I am running water in the coolant, not the reconmended product. Do the reconmended coolants have a sealing solution, or can I add one, or is that a bad idea?

    • @RobertDIY

First off I would use a Volvo class scanner to get proper Volvo codes.

    • @RobertDIY

My car do this !! But never never the temp was high!! I blown my headgasket? Why?

Probably lost coolant at some point. If the sensor doesn't have coolant on it because the coolant is low it probably won't show the overheating issue and warped the head.

      @@RobertDIY thanks for your answer
I checked mine 2.5 TDI with a NON blown head gasket today
the is no coolant violently spraying out with a warm engine so I guess if someone has coolant spraying out with a diesel engine it's the same procedure
Thank you for all the good content and worthy information Robert

@@samkrause3514 Love your reply! As far as I am aware.... Diesels generally run cooler than petrol engines...WHY? Because of the sheer mass of the engine itself .... It "self-cools" Plus the exhaust gas temperature is a lot lower....and therefore the head temperature.
      So many different factors involved.
In my time...I have found that most (NOT all) Diesel engines will run fine even if the system is not sealed.... they rarely get to boiling point.
But that is very general: Cars are a different ball game....They are engines running in a confined space.... Cooling is critical in any confined space.

With the newer models that have coolant flow through the intake manifold, would it be possible for coolant to reach the combustion chamber from there if there was a problem?

And about the Blue Devil head gasket sealant, I kinda doubt it would do much to stop combustion gases from enterin the coolant chambers, ports, and expansion tank. But, it is worth a try.
