For my birth, I found it very helpful to focus on relaxing all the muscles in my body and to NOT squeeze nor clinch on anything. Hold hands open and breathe through each contraction with my eyes closed. It easily got me to 8cm. My labor, even with pitocin, didn't push me to get an epidural with the relaxation method I was using. The fear of what was about to come (the actual birth) caused me to give in and get pain meds 😑.

Aww, I legit snorted at that unexpected ending to your story ☺️. At least you made it that far and you had baby, the most important part! 🥰

@Devin Fane hahaha yes, you're right!
I actually just had baby #2, and did my same relaxation method as the first and was able to go without any pain meds!! Hurt like hell, but...everything went perfectly 😊.

Bridget Teyler talks about this a lot and has meditations to listen to to help. It doesn’t have to be painful, and slow your pushing to let your body adjust to the stretch to avoid tearing. Our bodies are amazing

I'm so glad I tried the comb trick for my second labor because it was only 2 hours total, and I didn't have time for any pain meds or the epidural! I also did "horse lips" even though I felt so dumb. Both the comb trick and doing the horse lips when breathing really did help me focus and keep my body as relaxed as I could. My husband even said I seemed crazy calm on the outside. I was very much not calm on the inside haha.

I used combs during my first birth 16 days ago and it seemed to help! For the couple contractions I didn't use them they seemed way more overwhelming. Would recommend!
Also the other things that "helped" were focusing on my breathing (I did in through the nose for 4 out through the mouth for 6) and utilizing water. I labored in the tub for a while and had my husband use hot water on my back from the shower head. With all that I was able to have the natural, unmedicated delivery I wanted!

I gave birth to my first child in April. I bought a comb because I saw so many recommendations for it during birth, it didn't work for me. My husband handed me the hospital TV remote and squeezing all the buttons and hitting the mattress with it worked. 😅

Hi Sarah, what helped me during labor was when I was breathing that I started feeling the pain come during the most intense part I would do a strong inhale and when it began tapering off I would slowly exhale. Another thing that helped was sniffing my peppermint essential oil but that only helped during my mild contractions. The breathing got me thru active labor.

When I had my daughter I was very tired when in active labor so I was lying on my side most of that time. My doula put counter pressure on my hip or helped me focus on breathing. She helped me keep my sanity when it felt like my hips were falling apart

Girl I appreciate you trying to be kind but please don’t say laboring person. It’s so hurtful to women and the fact that we are the ones who do this. Men don’t labor and if we take away this amazing recognition of ability of woman’s motherhood and laboring, we hurt our culture and hurt women as a whole.

Using inclusive language like "laboring person" doesn't take anything away from cis women or hurt women as a whole though, and using inclusive language isn't about "being nice" but rather it's about being accurate. Gender and sex both exist on a spectrum and lots of people labor, including intersex and nonbinary folk, and pretending they don't exist or deserve the same recognition as cis women doesn't change the fact that they too can experience labor and childbirth. As a cis woman myself who is pregnant, I welcome the inclusive language because any and all people who are going through this wild journey of pregnancy, labor and giving birth deserve to be included in conversations that pertain to them.

@jordynferrari4161 My acupuncturist who has been an essential person on my birth team is non-binary. They have had 2 healthy pregnancies, and their experience has been so valuable to my me on my journey. Female bodies have babies. Not all female bodies belong to women and not all women have female bodies. I know that’s very hard for some people to understand. But what I don’t understand is how allowing those people to feel respected harms you in anyway. Women still have their sacred power. Non binary people have their power trans people have their power and cis men can pick up a drum, keep a beat and massage our feet.
