    Most hospital policies surrounding laying down for delivery are 100% about liability. Of course there absolutely can be situations where being on your back is truly safest, but this ‘one size fits all’ policy is absolutely not evidence based. Evidence, along with human anatomy and physiology, overwhelmingly tells us that being on our backs is NOT an ideal position for birth. It’s one of the worst, in fact, when looking at positions that best facilitate normal low-risk vaginal birth. Hospital policies that encourage/recommend women be laying down exist because of convenience (to hospital staff), provider comfortability, and risk of liability.
    I firmly believe that ALL of the above needs to be disclosed to patients beforehand, especially if this policy exists in that particular hospital.

    If it wasn’t for you and your videos, I wouldn’t have been an advocate for myself during my last pregnancy. My doctors were scared of me having a bigger baby and out of the 6 OBs I had, 1 kept pushing for me to do a c-section. I think it’s crazy how they just try to push things out of fear. They told me everything that could go wrong with a “big baby”, but refused to say what the complications were of a c-section. I stuck to my guns though since this was my second baby and I had gone through a natural delivery before without complication. I had my 9lb 3oz baby with no shoulder dystocia, only 2nd degree tearing, no baby distress, I was healthy. She got out in 4 pushes. Again, I know not everyone’s situation is the same. But I hate how that one doctor put so much doubt in my head and my abilities to birth. My OB who delivered was so shocked and was like “wow you can deliver big babies!” Lol.

      @beth90 3 года назад +4

      Me too! I definitely had to focus so much harder on breathing and relaxation during transition because contractions were much more intense, but actually I felt like I got longer breaks in between to recover. I was able to fully relax and actually slept between contractions in transition! Which actually makes sense as physiologically your body is preparing and conserving energy for the delivery. Our bodies are so cool and perfectly designed 💪💕

      @@beth90 aww yes! I slept in between contractions at that stage too. It’s when I finally surrendered. It was great! Also did you ladies experience like a euphoric surge of hormones during the pushing stage?? I felt like I was floating in the clouds and suddenly felt zero pain. I’ve not heard anyone talk of this so far but it gave me that extra energy at the end to push and just truly miraculous that it had a natural numbing effect!

    highly suggest this midwifes article on cervical lip alongside early urge to push: midwifethinking.com/2016/06/15/the-anterior-cervical-lip-how-to-ruin-a-perfectly-good-birth/
    i think the idea that pushing before full dilation can result in swelling or tearing of the cervix makes sense (especially if baby is posterior making this urge more common), but if a women has a physiological birth she knows when she should push. many times these women wouldnt be having a vaginal exam to check for dilation anyway + even if she did, she could totally be "just 7cm" and 20mins later be completely dilated so in this case i think someone telling her not to push on the assumption that she isnt fully dilated could cause more problems than just telling her to listen to her body.

    Hello! Love your channel found you in my last 2 months of pregnancy. I gave birth in July 2020. I guess I was an atypical case since my labor was like nothing I’ve read/watched/heard about. If my OB wasn’t extra cautious I don’t think I would’ve made it to the hospital because according to all I knew and even calling triage I was NOT in active labor. Can you talk about atypical labor symptoms and what to look out for? I only had gas aches and delivered unmedicated. Only intervention was breaking my water(s) at 7 centimeters. Arrived at the hospital at 5 centimeters. The machine never saw any contractions. My stomach never got hard and my “contractions/waves” were persistent. Never regular and only intensified after my water was broken but still felt like bad gas + pressure. No pain. Weird, no???

    It’s not always about z hospital policies that u have to deliver on your back. When I was delivering even there were no policies like that, but all those wires like epidural, baby monitor, IVs were not long enough to maneuver around with positions on z bed even though I crystal clearly felt that if I changed position to any other than on my back it would’ve gone faster n easier☹️

    1) LOVE you and your channel!
    2) My question is: Will a hysteroscopic metroplasty to remove a uterine septum increase the chance of a c-section or complications during labor/birth? The operation is coming up and the hubby and I are waiting to try for a while afterwards to make sure I’m all healed up, but I want to set realistic expectations since physiological birth is very close to my heart and important to me ❤️
    (Bonus question: Long story short, I have one kidney that seems to be a rebel and only makes up for about 30% of the work, doesn’t drain properly, and presents with hydronephrosis. Will this present complications in pregnancy?)
    Never thought our journey to have kiddos would be this long and complicated!

    I love how people plan ahead how they want to have a baby then all hell breaks when you're delivering a baby :D

    • @beth90
      @beth90 3 года назад +1

      I don’t think it’s necessarily about planning ahead. I mean, on some level it might be. But I think for the most part it’s about knowing you have options. Like for me, my “plan” was to birth in whatever position felt right to me at the time. Whether that be laying down or otherwise. I knew ahead of time that physiologically, being on your back is actually the worst position for birth. Therefore, if I were at a hospital which had a “policy” that you must be laying down, I’d 1000% be asking questions too and advocating for myself ahead of time! And actually, what did happen when I delivered my baby was I had been in a reclined sitting position and all of a sudden felt the urge to push and my body instinctually flipped over onto my hands and knees to do so. It wasn’t a calculated decision or one I thought about ahead of time. I just listened to my body and did what I felt was right in that moment. Which was my plan all along. No way did I want to feel restricted in any way or like I wasn’t “allowed” to follow my own natural instincts. Man that would have been the sh**s! Lol

    Hi Sarah, when I had my baby (1rst time mom) I've been in the first stage of labour for about 32 hours. My hospital had put us in a waiting room for hours before we could get admitted (ps I live in Canada). When I got to 4.5 cm they finally gives us a room and I was so tired and in pain that I chose the epidural, they also break my water at that point to help my baby's heart rate. At that moment they find out that she was in an op position, is theire a way to find that kind of information earlier on and could it be the reason why it took me so long to get to that 4.5cm even with contractions 2min appart for almost 8 hours? My second question is, after they brook my water I got from 4.5 cm to 10cm in 1h. Not only I had the shakes, but I vomited twice once within that hour and once while pushing. Is it normal hat the vomit was black and that I was having incontrol nausea mixt with big hurt burns? They wouldn't give me anything for it and the pushing stage was such difficult because of it, at each push I fealt like I was gonna throw up (over 2 hours with having a second degree episiotomy and manually flipping the baby) ? At the end it was a beautiful birth! Thanks and happy 2021!! Love your RUclips channel!!

    QUESTION: after a C-Section I've heard you can request Wound Vacuuming or Negative pressure treatment to help heal faster. What is this and is it effective?! FTM, due in May, thanks!

    I know you've answered this before about how quickly vbac deliveries (or rather how not quick) they can be. My question is, does having 2 miscarriages change that? I've had 2 C-section because of no dilation with the first baby and misinformation from provider with the second. I then had 2 miscarriages, the first my body handled on its own, the second I was successfully induced. Would that factor in at all to how my body would react to labor and delivery?

    Can you please do a video on uterine prolapse? There isn't a lot of information online. I developed a minor one in my 1st trimester and wondering if it will impact delivery. Currently 34+6

    In my last birth my epidural didn’t work. The anaesthetist attempted to manipulate the position of the tube, I changed positions and he even redid it but I was still left with a large window of pain. Will this be to do with my body/anatomy and will it like happen again next time if I opted for epidural?

    An add on to someone else’s question: I have had one vaginal birth and then one c section. I am pregnant with baby 3 right now and attempting vbac sometime in the next 7 weeks. In this case should my delivery theoretically be faster since it’s technically vaginal birth number 2?

    I don’t want to throw up in labor but I’ve heard it’s common. I’ve had severe morning sickness this pregnancy that has really improved quite a bit so I’m just nauseous most of the time instead of actually vomiting. But nothing makes me more exhausted and miserable than throwing up and I don’t want to be throwing up and waste all my energy on that during labor. Can I be given something for nausea/vomiting in labor if that comes up?

      My understanding is (and it was for me) that people throw up from the pain, not necessarily being nauseous.

      I think I've seen / heard somewhere that if you decide to have an epidural you most likely won't be able to be in many different positions - Just extra info, idk about you but I know I'm definitely getting an epidural!

    My question is can you breastfeed while pregnant? Does breastfeeding while pregnant cause a chance of having a miscarriage?

    I’ve done research and it seems like vegan diets may put your baby at risk if you are not diligent with your diet. Any thoughts on vegan diets during pregnancy and breast feeding?

      Well just eat well on a vegan diet then. Eating vegan doesn't mean eating grass only. I've been vegan for 7 years, had a vegan baby 2 years ago. Everything is good, always. Look up vegan nutrition if you're interested, like make sure you take calcium/magnesium, algae oil for omega fats etc.

      @@89tothbianka I’ve also been vegan a long time - about 6 years. My worry is that supplemental vitamins will not be enough. I’ve been reading up on prenatal nutrition and there is a limited number of science-backed nutrition guides for vegan mums. Many non-vegan guides call for dairy products. I know it can be done, I’m looking for as much information as I can get and looking to weigh the pros and cons of temporarily including dairy products and eggs into my diet. Thank you for your input :) every bit helps
