The Giant Forest 4K | Sequoia National Park

    Sequoia National Park's Giant Forest is home to five of the ten biggest trees on earth, including the General Sherman Tree, which at more than 36 feet wide at the base and a staggering 275 ft tall is an absolute titan.
    But as incredible as it is to marvel at General Sherman's stature, it would be a huge mistake to pass up the opportunity to explore the more secluded and secretive giants hidden in the forest.
    It's impossible to select only one trail to highlight: The Congress and Big Trees trails, as well as the trek to the summit of Moro Rock, are among the area's most popular hikes. But you'd be doing yourself a huge favor by taking a couple of days and exploring the lesser-known reaches of the Giant Forest.
    Perhaps the best thing about the Giant Forest is its accessibility. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer, restricted to a wheelchair or somewhere in between, the Giant Forest has trails for you.
    Stay on official trails and durable surfaces to help preserve vegetation, Do Not Climb Trees, take only pictures and leave no trace. These forests are priceless. Help preserve them for future generations.

    I’m a 68 year old British man. I’ve seen these trees on television I doubt that I will ever see them in person but they are magnificent. I’m not a radical or leftie or eco warrior but WE NEED TO PROTECT THE TREES ON OUR PLANET . They are as important as water and all our natural resources. 👍👍

    I remember the stories of our older ones, that around 12.800 years ago in my country [Montenegro - south east Europe] trees were as tall as 250 meters, that in our forests lived scorpions which were about 1m in size, large bears, and that the level of oxygen was so dense that people were as tall as 3 to 4 meters. I can just look at this video and say that Sequoia trees are remnants of mega flora, and mega fauna, and considering the fact that they survived for so long I can only assume that these forests were on a path of giant water waves which were omitted when the fragments of a decaying comet hit the Laurentian ice cap.
    Beneath this forest still lies vast amounts of water and also oxygen.

      ⛳️Yes… People, Tree, Animals were very big before and they are reducing in small sizes now.. we have examples - Man power could make Stonehenge, Pyramid… Very large and tall tree existed here.. mammoths, dinosaurs, large fishes were living here on earth..
      We also learn similar in our Jain Philosophy.

    Are we planting more of them? I'll see them in April! Is that a good time?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  2 года назад +1

      We're envious. Hope you have a great time!
      To answer your questions: We're not sure there's a bad time to visit. This forest is incredible in all seasons though summer and fall are increasingly threatened by wildfires.
      Federal and state land managers continue to plant new trees, but it takes thousands of years for them to fully mature. And between 10-15% of the surviving sequoia forest has been lost in the last few years to wildfires in California.
      These trees are threatened by the warming climate. When visiting, be especially conscious of the impact you make. These trees should be enjoyed, but they are also precious and should be respected and protected.

      @@HomeInWildSpaces Will do. I wish we can have longer vacation. My wife can only request 5 days of leave :( So We're not sure if we should do this kind of schedule
      April 9-12 in SanFrancisco
      April 13 Yosemite
      April 14 Sequoia then rush back to SFO for our flight in the evening, SIGH :(

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  2 года назад +2

      It's hard settling on a schedule, especially when there is soooo much to see. However, If you ask us; we'd suggest cutting way back. San Francisco is cool, but as you've probably concluded we're chiefly drawn to the outdoors and nature. That's where we'd spend our time, but understand that not everyone shares our preferences.
      Preferences not withstanding, even people who are unable to hike or explore the backcountry really ought to give Sequoia and Yosemite multiple days each. If we had 5 days, we'd probably spend them all at one park and save the other park for another trip. It takes time to really connect with these remarkable landscapes and is not the kind of thing that should be rushed.
      Definitely a case of "less is more" when planning a visit to our national parks. Any time you have to "rush" you're likely depriving yourself of the absolute best the parks have to offer.
      Hope that helps. We wish you the best on your trip. However much time you spend in the parks, please tread lightly. These are sacred spaces.

    Those tree species used to span the west coast all the way to the gulf of Alaska. The tallest tree in the world...the oregon coastal redwood or sequoia sempervirens is still nearly extinct in oregon. We need these trees more than ever...if we could find anywhere to plant them. We need to integrate trees into future structures. What do you think?...would 4 sequoias support the weight of a skyscraper?

    Someone shared the link about this forest. I am curious, esp. when it says it's in OH. Well... gotta check the map how far it's from our town. Is there any hotels around it? Thanks for sharing! God bless!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  5 лет назад

      Thanks for watching!!! I apologize, I'm not sure what "OH" refers to. As far as logging. There are a number of options both inside and outside the park(s). There are a number of communities that that border Sequoia, especially to the south, but these locations are at least 45 minutes from the Giant Forest. There are limited cabins and campgrounds within the park(s). Check with park staff or recreation.gov for additional details.
      Hope that's helpful!!! Thanks again for watching and commenting!

    Thanks for the video! Is the giant forest trail well marked or will I need to know where to turn at intersections to stay on it?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  3 года назад

      It's a little bit of a maze. Multiple trails intersect each other. Not terribly disorienting in our opinion, but it's best to have your map from the park service handy. We wandered for hours along multiple trails and couldn't have been happier. Even missed the shuttle back to where our car was parked. Had to walk 2-3 miles in total darkness (not recommended).
      Stay on the trail, study your map, and watch the time (if you need to catch the shuttle). And leave no trace. This is a sacred space deserving of respect.
      Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!! Hope to hear from you again.

    Ive been to yosemite often but never sequoia park. It looks amazing. Im older now, are there trails accessible? Hiw many days needed to visit and see major accessible parts. Also, is fall ok to go? I hate mosquitoes and heat soooooo id rather be cold.
    Thanks all!!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  11 месяцев назад +1

      There are a number of very accessible trails including the trail to General Sherman, Grant Grove (in Kings Canyon NP) and the big trees trail.
      I'd expect the heat and mosquitoes to be more manageable in fall, however, California has been having terrible fires in the fall as summer foliage dries up. I don't know that there is a perfect time, but I can't say there's a bad time either.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for watching. Make sure to check out the updated video: ruclips.net/video/mfGaXDJfbSU/видео.html
