The sound of morning among the giants. This soundscape was recorded in Redwood National Park August 17, 2021. Behind the scenes notes: This was probably the most difficult sound recording I have ever gone after. A redwood forest is naturally very quiet. During the majority of the day, you only hear wind through the needles of redwood trees and the occasional chirping of birds. The dawn chorus is the most active sonic time of the day in most environments, but certainly so in a Redwood Forest.
Due to it’s natural silence, it is very difficult to escape the sound of traffic noise from U.S. 101. Even several miles away from it, my microphone was able to pick up the distant low-end rumble of semi-tractor-trailers roaring down the highway. It took me several days to find a decent recording location that was a balance between eliminating traffic noise and finding interesting sound sources. Additionally, many of the sound sources-birds-are perched in the canopy of the tallest trees in the world. This introduces an added layer of difficulty to recording. In best recording practices, a sound source should be close to the microphone element. This prevents overcompensation by cranking the gain and raising the noise floor (the white noise kind of sound).
These two major hurdles influenced my decision on where to record. On the last day, I chose an area several miles away from U.S. 101 that had a hardwood hammock growing where the redwood canopy had opened up to allow more light. The lower branches of the hardwood trees brought the songbirds closer to my microphone while the ravens stayed higher in the redwoods. The ravens being further away created an eerie echo that sonically painted an image of the space towering trees create. This recording is just after sunrise as a heavy mist accumulated on the trees then dripped down to the ferns below.
Recorded in stereo - headphones will immerse you in this natural soundscape and enhance your experience. Use this sound as a background ambience for studying, working, creative inspiration, meditation, restorative exercises, or relaxation.

I went to the Humboldt Redwoods SP last year, which is another grove of coastal California Redwoods. We didn't experience many crowds at all, even in May. The weather was nearly 90 degrees between clearings, but the moment you entered a grove, it became 65 degrees and humid. And so, so quiet. We saw a fallen tree that seemed to stretch on forever, walked inside trees that were hollow in the middle and yet still going strong, and after we left, our benchmark of what trees should look like was completely changed. It was a truly humbling and magical experience to walk among so many giants.

Most of the day these places are quiet. It’s usually at dawn or dusk, the dawn chorus mostly, when you will hear the most biophony. I tend to always arrive around nautical twilight, to set up my recording gear, and wait for the forest to wake up. That said, not every place will have sound. I location scout areas that have reasons to draw an abundance of wildlife in like food sources and water sources.

We would return in the fall to flyfish for Chinook salmon on the Smith River, one of the most beautiful rivers in California.
As I write these words there is an 85,000 acre wildfire burning on the ridge along 199 not far from Jedidiah Smith State Park. My heart breaks for the loss of these beautiful trees and all the creatures you have captured in your video.

I was writing this novel, it's quite long and complex. A sci-fi novel set in a distant future where mankind have left Earth...
But there are still episodes set on the planet and... well, many parts of Earth, in that scenario, are covered with Redwoods. Mostly coastlines but, still a wonderful way to imagine Earth.
No more cities, no more concrete and asphalt, just nature everywhere you go.

@Listening to Earth LLC Thank you soooooo much for these immersive projects. I live in a very busy city and have some health issues which leave me often housebound. This is an extraordinarily beautiful way to re connect to the natural world !

Beautiful video of this majestic place on earth. I myself have had the fortune of walking through the redwood forest. It truly is magical. Is this the one in Humboldt County right off the 101?

It was all filmed in Redwood national Park. But Humboldt State Park is also just as gorgeous!
