It's so cool that you gave Phanden the opportunity to revisit such an important place in his life, without breaking his promise or putting him in danger. A walking legend.
More than that. It was shot beautifully. It was intimate. It was real and it is now for ever or as long as the Internet lasts. Two or three hundred years from now a group o kids may be asked to do a report on Everest and one of them may watch this video and see a snap shot of these two people's life. It's a legacy.
@@michaelblaes9847omg i love the thought of that. it’s so crazy how stuff on youtube that we’re watching as entertainment now will be used as a historical time capsule in the future :,)

Indeed! Nothing quite as good as travel 'vloggers' actually showing the world around them and delving into the details; the people, the places, and of course the culture
It’s the only reason I watched more than 3 minutes of the video. Me me me me!!!! I can’t take it anymore. Gives me some hope that a young person can still see the forest through the trees.
I'm an American mountaineer. 20 yrs ago I've met Phanden in Nepal while he was still in amazing shape and I believe he had just returned from an Everest summit. He is quite the legend in Nepal, India and elsewhere!
15:10 when he says “because I already promised I’m not coming back” his voice says it all… the experiences he had, good and bad and also the wish to be on top again and still bound by responsibility… sounded like he has to stay away from his love for something which he shall not get to experience again for the greater good… it is a love story !
If RUclips had awards this video would surely win something. It brought tears to my eyes because it was and wasn’t about Everest. Beautifully done Luke. Thank you.

Yeah, that was about people near the mountain, who really do the hard job around those who climb. That's astonishing that most videos start at the base camp and sherpas are usually just some people in the background.
Finally, a video that showcases and talks more about the people who lead these adventures. I've seen so many that make light of their work or are very self-centered. This is refreshing.
As a nepali I am proud of my people . People like phanden really set an example of our culture and our values . Thank you Luke for showing this amazing work to people around the world. ❤ 🇳🇵
I've never seen any of this kid's videos before and just happened on this one by accident, so it's the very first one I've ever watched and I can already tell that he has one hell of a future ahead of him. Such an excellent video that honestly deserves to be seen on far more than just RUclips! I will definitely be watching more.
No offense meant with the "kid" comment, by the way. Anyone mid-twenties and younger is a kid to me, but you'll definitely understand when you're older. 😂
@@jus10lewissr Hey jus1 - you should definitely watch his other videos - the ones where he is traveling - all amazing, well done in terms of story telling, editing, music, people. Some of my favorites are all rated high - his trip to Greenland (twice); trip to Mynamar (very moving); recent trip to Solomon Islands and China, his hitchhiking with a young woman in India (amazing); his trip to Pakistan that ended up traveling to the mountains to see the dark sky with his new friend - that was absolutely amazing! So many good videos - all great. But even his earlier videos back when he was in his early twenties or even late teens were good and showed his talent.
Luke Korns is a tremendously talented - and comes across as a good, kind and caring guy. I came across him accidently too about a year and half ago - and then went back and viewed his other videos - both recent ones which are amazing (see the one where he travels to Pakistan - very moving; hitch-hiking in India with a young woman; his trip to Mynamar; his two parter visit to Greenland, the first part was especially emotional given the high suicide rates in the town he was visiting; his recent trips to Solomon Islands and China - and earlier Lebanon. going to the Amazon and Morocco. In each case he focuses on the people - all of them people he had just met - and their lives, bringing to us their view of their world. Always well edited, good narration and sounds and music. Also, check out his earlier videos when he was in his early twenties (including his Spanish language ones when he lived in Peru and after he moved back to LA - hilarious and well done). Even in those videos he shows his talent that emerges more fully later when he travels.
For anyone who has never been that high - the headaches really hurt and dont go away for a while. Sleeping can also be difficult and you get very vivid dreams when you do sleep.
Just moving your body is so taxing. Never been to Everest, but I just stood up from the couch to get a cookie from the kitchen, so I kinda know how it feels.
I went as well, and if those headaches are that intense, you need to go down for a bit. Altitude sickness is dangerous and you therefore need to end up lower than the highest point you went that day.
This is my first time gifting someone on youtube, but content like this deserves all the praise. Well done for posting such an amazing video and story.
I don't know what I'm more impressed by; Phanden's story, Everest or the amount of work that goes into filming such a truly remarkable story. Incredible
I love that he retired because his family is worried. He knows his priority. He already reach his goal but stretching that goal is okay, but sometimes one must sacrifice snd realize what is really important.
I also loved that he was so clear that he would never summit Everest again, some people might be tempted for just one more summit and we all know how that one last job can go.
@@tipsysmichigander6483 So, I see you commenting on every single positive comment, and I have to wonder what on Earth happened to you that made you this unreasonably negative.

14:34 Phanden giving gifts to the porter is the most wholesome shot in this whole video, and it got relegated to B-roll while Luke narrated something else. Extremely humble.
The ending scene literally makes me tear up. The fade to black as he thanks her for everything she taught him, gave him, and let him live. That mountain gives him purpose and gave him a place to share his kindness. He gave her up for his family and thats so beautiful. 10/10 video man
This is cheap for a creator who actually makes an incredible effort to get the stories of the people who make the places we've seen a dozen times. The human connection Luke brings to each video is outstanding.
This! This is exactly why you get hooked on this videos! Lots of videos about this climb on youtube, but there is allways somthing in Luke's videos that just connect! And that is it!
I highly recommend to anyone travelling to base camp to take the longer route from jiri. The extra days hiking helps you acclimatize and to prevent alititude sickness. You also get to experience so much more nepalese culture and help support families who may not see as many tourists. I hiked to EBC in 2014 and it changed my life.
It started as a travel vlog and quickly became a story of friendship, then finally ended as a mini biopic of a man of faith, honor, and resilience. Thank you for this, kudos to you Luke, you made a journey that millions or even billions others might never get a chance or even dare to do.
Luke, I've been watching your videos on and off since 2017 and I wanted to say, this is one of my favorite videos of yours. It's not just about Mount Everest, but you also offer a unique perspective from the life of someone who has been a guide there for many years. Such a heartwarming story! As someone who loves travelling, I wanted to support you with a donation. Thanks for putting out such a good video!
@LukeKorns You are welcome Luke. I am originally from Sri Lanka but now I live in the US. Most of my travel now is limited to the US states but I hope to travel the world someday !
You know, for all the photos of Everest I've seen, I realised I have never before seen photos of the communities in Nepal. They are so beautiful !! Thank you so much for sharing
Luke, congratulations on this unique perspective on a heavily covered trek. I’ve watched numerous documentaries about Everest, and yours is the first to show the beautiful scenery on the way to base camp. As you said, base camp is the beginning of the journey for most visitors, but it was your destination. This is typical of the way you portray your adventures. @@N0N4M30 I bet, you have enjoyed yourself in a city, a seal of tarmac and concrete over NATURE before. Or do you even live in one or in a house? And for your house and street and electricity and plumbing a lot of nature was destroyed. Stop destroying our nature then! On top of that, your lifestyle choices like computer technology, mobile phone, food from (animal) factory farming, your car, taking a plane and so on destroys much more nature everyday and for much longer even into our future. So? ... And what nature does grow up there in this mountain area? Nothing - nothing grows over at those heights at 5000m! Bro get your shit together, throw away your computer and mobile and start living sustainable, off-grid in the woods!! You're comment is pathetic :D
nice that slowly our country is getting more and more recognition globally. For such a small country, many people seem to miss it or forget its existence
Out of all the high altitude climbing docs I've watched on RUclips (and believe me, I've watched them all) - this has got to be my favorite. I loved watching your friendship. So much more than a silly, selfish climb to the top. And it was hard enough as it was just trekking to base camp. I am glad that Phanden will no longer have to struggle on that mountain again. That he will live to be old with his wife. That he feels lucky to be alive. That he still respects the goddess. I am happy to see an American who's not summit-crazed, who's kind to all he meets and has a willing heart to understand others and their stories. This was a truly beautiful, poignant doc about two human beings. If anything - I wish it was longer so I could get to know Phanden even better. He seems like an awesome human being!
People like Phanden really set an great example of our Nepali culture and values . Thank you Luke for showing this amazing work to people around the world. As, a Nepali I'm proud of my people.
I grew up a fan of television. Today it's mostly binge watching random yt videos. In the countless number of videos, you always know when you see something that stands out and is special. Great job.
What a masterpiece of a video! Documentary dare i say. Showing and highlighting the life of those who rarely get mentioned, while the sherpas are well known, we rarely ever get a glimpse of THEIR lives and harshness they got to endure, in order to put a few individuals seeking self-glory to climb mount everest. Whenever I see articles about X-individual finally reached the summit of Mt.Everest, I am always disheartened they rarely ever mention the many sherpas who lead the way and guided them to the top, while it might just be their job, they are afterall risking their very lives in order to feed their family at home. Not to mention those who clean up the garbage left behind and even bringing the remnants of those that didn't make it.
Thank you, Luke, for visiting Nepal with my Dad and sharing one of many Sherpas’s life experiences. Your video brought back so many memories of our trek together to Everest Base Camp and 3 pass last year. Really loved the video.❤️🙏🏻
Much love and respect from Europe - many here wonder whether all this climbing business is a disturbance, but seeing anything about Nepal and the mountains is ever so intriguing This video just gives more reality than many climbing footage.
this almost had me in tears. our world is so beautiful. thank you Luke for sharing this with us, you always have a special way of capturing how we all are connected
I felt the same! I was resisting crying the entire time...I'm not even sure why. I'm mainly struck by the kindness and beauty of this man and his wife. So gentle and caring of Luke.
I love this. It dawned on me as I was watching - the pinnacle of your own journey may just be someone else's basecamp. Everyone takes a different path. It's not the result that matters, but the will and the way of getting there. As another commenter said, I love that this was more about Phanden's journey than yours. The Sherpas deserve our respect.
Ya he just met that guide randomly. Which shows he has an open minded sense of adventure allowing synchronicity to affect the story. So many ppl will just get dropped off at base camp from a helicopter. I feel like this kid has already a once in a lifetime experience of Everest thr
Or is he able to capture the profound and amazing nature of humans by his way of communicating and creating? He just sees the potential where most of us don't bother to look beyond surface level
Travel alone forces you to talk with locals. In this case he went to lukla and prep there, usually you prep in Kathmandu..most likely how he got this amazing experience.
I'm just into 5 min and my eyes started tearing up. Luke, I was in Nepal in April too. I am not physically fit for trekking, never did any sorta thing in life. But stepping into Nepal, watching the mountains that freak me out from afar, I knew someday I need to be back. I need to go as near as I can. Hope someday I will also visit Nepal again and start my way to basecamp. And if fortunate, maybe I will also encounter such a great person like Phanden. Leaving the comment here as my manifest.
A massive Nepalese thank you Luke for visiting our country, trekking the EBC route and most importantly telling a human story of one of many Everest guides. Hat's off to you brother 🙌.

This was the best story about Mount Everest I've ever seen. Beautifully shot, scripted, edited, coloured... The story is profound with bits of knowledge and emotion that spread so seemlessly, that it touches our very souls! Just everything is like a masterclass in filmmaking. Hi Luke, I’m from Nepal and have been following you for a few years. I’m glad you enjoyed the beauty and joy of our country, including Everest (Sagarmatha in Nepali, meaning 'the top of the world'). I’m so happy that you got to experience the wonders of our beautiful country and the warmth of our friendly people. Please do come back again 😊😊🙏🏾
A masterpiece! Truly respect the way you projected the video/film. Respect to Phenden! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to watch this film and letting us be apart of it ❤
Amazing, it absolutely worth the wait. As Luke’s videos evolve, it seems like his refining them to the point where they were about him, then about his journey and the experience, and now they’re an incredible digital portrait of the people he meets along the way
This is by a country mile easily the best story and images about Everest I have ever seen. Fabulous views of the mountains, amazing images and atmosphere of the route taken. Wonderful portrayal of the spirit of the place and people.
this video made me tear up, it's so beautiful and touching, showing this man and his people the way they live in humbleness and yet they're so happy. Loved the respect they have for the mountain and how thankful they are to be alive
This man's story kinda sounds like an 80s action movie where the protagonist is happily retired but gets pulled back in for one last job. All jokes aside most content creators who have like a month or more between posts usually see their audience diminish but not Luke Korns, people be awaiting in anticipation for his videos because we get to see parts of as well as people of the world we don't normally see anywhere else. Also if they ever make a Luke Korns movie or documentary they really ought to just call it "Winging It: The Luke Korns Story"
This was one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. I am a huge fan of Mount Everest and I read almost every book about it. This was so beautiful and sad at the same time. The sherpa is a strong guy with the luck of being alive and having a wonderful family. ❤
This is a the best 15min video that I had watched so far this year. Not super long and not too short. You go straight to the point and not drag on. Thanks for making this video Luke. A very inspiring take. Well done.
i have watched so much content about mount everest and mountaineering this showing this wildly different side of that world is very beautiful to see thank you
I really appreciate this video. I am experienced hiker and even a climber, but at age 75 with bad knees, I would never have a chance for base camp. It's wonderful you got a great guide. Thank you for sharing your very human issues, and your guide's wisdom and understanding.
I loved your story ! What a great tribute to the Nepalese people who risk everything to assist climbers from all over the world. They do the HARDEST work and aren’t mentioned. Without them , these climbers couldn’t succeed. Your story was really heartfelt and showed the warmth of the people . Keep it up !❤❤❤ so enjoyable . I think your special gift Luke is how well you connect with people and you can then show the world their story . 😊
The thing i love about Luke's videos is that he goes to these places not only for it's fantastical view, but he meets the locals and experiences their raw culture. I believe it to be the purest form of travelling. He shows the lives of the people, their harships, the memories and the joy it brings. It brings me and a lot of others so much hope in a world that is ever changing. This truly is the best channel on RUclips. ❤
Having been to EBC twice, you perfectly captured the spirit and magic of Nepal, and most importantly its people. I got tears of nostalgia watching this!
I bet 5ths must have brought back awesome memories. I always wanted to at least get to base camp, if not climb. Chomolungma has been a life’s dream since I read the early stories of Hillary. Unfortunately I got a blood clot climbing, and two clots in the lungs. So I knew I would not be a candidate. It’s not as easy as some people think going above 8K.
You could feel it....He knew that if he ever tried to go back up that the mountain would take him. he knew when to stop. that takes a lot of guts especially after you spend a lifetime working your way up from literally the bottom and end up at the top. I have heard the same story from men and women whom have reached the summit and they said that they felt sadness because there was nowhere else to go. Once you have reached the top and you look out over the world it humbles you by remindig you just how small and insignifigant we all are at times like that. This was one of the best youtube videos I have seen in years, Bravo dude, Bravo.......
My favorite Everest video.. everything about it. Sensitive, modest, subtle, respectful, eloquent. Great way of capturing the human side of apparently a great man. Beautiful.

Phanden is the loveliest guide you could have hoped to have!! ❤ He was so supportive and caring... and his family was just beautiful. You're a lucky guy!
In a world where it's "all about me", I'm glad you made it about Phanden. Well done!
Love that comment
I'm an American mountaineer. 20 yrs ago I've met Phanden in Nepal while he was still in amazing shape and I believe he had just returned from an Everest summit. He is quite the legend in Nepal, India and elsewhere!
its very powerful when he said, "nope, im not coming back" because the love he has for his wife and children matter most.
This editing style is SOOO UNIQE!!!! This is a full blown documentary!!

They DO have awards. I forget what they are called, though.
Finally, a video that showcases and talks more about the people who lead these adventures. I've seen so many that make light of their work or are very self-centered. This is refreshing.
Agree ,it was very humbling. I appreciated the energy of gratitude given for this whole journey & his Guide ,sharing his family his story
It’s heart warming how they take care of you. You can feel how nice, pure and sincere they are just by looking at this video. ❤

Same bud, subbed right after watching this...what a life!
I totally agree with your statement!
Absolutely, it is like somebody's constantly hammering your skull. Everest tests you both mentally and physically.
Just moving your body is so taxing. Never been to Everest, but I just stood up from the couch to get a cookie from the kitchen, so I kinda know how it feels.
@@Bakkiepleuah lol, some days I know how you feel. Stairs are a pain as well

I love that he retired because his family is worried. He knows his priority. He already reach his goal but stretching that goal is okay, but sometimes one must sacrifice snd realize what is really important.

Can you mention some of your favorite docs? I'd like to watch as well. Love these kinda videos.
