Military Close Combat Instructor here, I am not a professional in Martial Arts or anything, but I have to say that knife fight was ludicrous. Such a fight would never transpire. No one comes at you with a knife ready to spar. You keep it concealed, you get close and then go on stabbing without pause or relent until the opponent is down. Will a nunchuck help you then? If you are not ready probably not. if he is less than 6 steps away it's hard to draw your pistol in time. Is that a critique on the nunchuck? No, no weapon will be ideal here. If he starts stabbing only protective gear will aid, and you can hopefully shoot or slap him off afterwards. No weapon will aid you here.
In general too the nunchuck, I can't see it practical in actual combat, but that is cause I always evaluate things with a soldiers mind: Can I use that tired, with a 30kg backpack, a vest and my rifle dangling about. BUt in a streetfight? I can't judge, no experience with them. I honestly believe that someone that trained like you will kick my ass with it no problem.
The respect thing... Idk, I am not sure. I respect my weapons, but I guess handling rifles and machine guns is different. I don't have a martial arts mindset at all too, and never really did it. Military fighting is just dirty tricks and no elegence. There is only the intent to not be killed. So... it is much more dirty by default, and just pragmatic

No melee weapon is one anymore. Its just the knife fight. If you want to hurt someone with a knife, you keep it concealed, get close and then draw and stab. I just dislike the multitude of "knife defends" online. If someone with a knife comes at you, you can only hope to wear vest. Or just run in time
I might have phrased it wrong, no native, I don't disagree with you at all about this. Shad is overreacting, the nunchuck is a good weapon in the right hands, everything can be after all. I just don't understand your knife defense, cause who uses a knife like that?

You're absolutely right, you never want to have to tango with a knife, the demonstration was if you HAD TO and so happen to have a pair of nunchucks on you at the time(very hypothetical demonstration anyway). Also the attacker in the demonstration was meant to be untrained because more than likely in a street fight you will not be versing a green beret.

Just, I don't like the: you can use this in the streets mentality, cause I think one has to be one hell of a machine to do. And an aggressor with a knife can completely choose when to reveal it. In a fair fight, as seen in the vid, knifes can't do a thing against range. Its quite like that grapple thing you talked about.
My advice in a streetfight, whenever possible would just be run.

That point about not overswinging is so important!! Not only for when you miss, but also to not lose control to defend yourself from an attack if the opponent attempted to strike at the same time, was not instantly incapacitated or if you’re fighting multiple people!!
It’s important to train that basic habit because it is always much more useful to have it than not.
Besides there’s a point of force in which the power becomes irrelevant. If it gets the job done, that’s enough force and the unpredictability of the weapon and other factors will grant more advantages to a weapon in its use against a real opponent. Weapons aren’t just in a competition on which can whack the hardest, they are used in many more dimensions in active combat.
    Great vid!!

    • @vanivanov9571
      @vanivanov9571 2 года назад +3

Nice points. Note that you can apply follow-through or "overswing" without losing your composure. You just need to transition that energy into a follow-up swing. You should stop accelerating the weapon at the point on the other side of your target, certainly, and focus on turning it for the next blow.
In longsword, it's common to stop the blow at middle-guard, so as to present the point and control the centre, but this comes at the cost of a far weaker swing, if you do hit.
Power does become overkill at some point. Even those toy nunchucks can break limbs without much effort. Note that in physical tests, though, the mechanical advantage of flails leads to them inflicting more destruction. Similar to how much worse a tonfa is, from that little spin.

And if a strike is blocked, how easy is the recovery for the nunchuck user? I could imagine that it would throw me off pretty hard if the strike is stopped preemptively, but someone who is trained might have no issues with that. Would you run into trouble if the stick intercepts the Nunchuck at the chain, since it would cause it to wrap around?

The major shit show with his videos is his bias.
    Let’s start with the claim
    “The nunchuck is useless”
He then demonstrates some REALLLY pathetic swings, to the point I don’t believe they’re genuine swings at all in attempt to use the weapon as inefficiently as possible to paint it in a negative light.
Then, when shown by martial artists with the nunchuck how hard they can hit he uses a motte and Bailey argument where he’s retreating from his first claim of “they’re terrible useless weapons” to an argument of “oh well it takes time to train with these and a stick doesn’t! So the stick is better because ANYONE can pick up a stick and use them effectively!”
Now my problem with that is…no they can’t. For the ONE video he shown of some burglar with nunchucks getting rushed I can show him 10 of people with baseball bats (aka big stick) getting rushed and not using it properly.
His new introduction of a “anyone should be able to use it effectively” standard is wrong. Because a totally untrained non fighter with ANY weapon is utterly shit. Spears, flails, and actually a lot of the time, swords! These would all be useless to a guy bum rush charging them.
By this standard I’d say the only good weapons ever is knives and guns.

I think that other than nunchaku's and sticks' momentum and force the only other things to consider are ease of use, and matchups against other weapons.
For ease of use, it is a more challenging weapon to use, so for an untrained person I think most will agree that the stick is a better weapon. However, if we consider trained individuals, I believe that they would be similar in terms of utility. As you stated the impact to your hand wil be reduced. This means it would be harder to be disarmed, but someome trained with a stick/sticks should be able to mitigate this risk in the same way that someone trained in nunchaku have a very low chance of erroneous knockback.
If for some reason you were disarmed, the nunchaku's learning curve is an advantage, because of the opponent's inability to use your weapon.
In terms of match ups, the nunckuck has the advantage in telegraphing powerful moves, but you can thrust with a stick. The ability to beat away other weapons defensively is easier with a stick.
I think that in trained stick vs trained nunchuk, stick would win most of the time, but nunchuck vs metal knuckles or knives or fists is better than stick vs any of those.
I saw someone point out that obtaining control of the opponent's stick is significantly easier than with nunchaku and I think that disarming is very important in a street fight/self defense situation.

I watched Wushu Engineer's video and it only solidifies Shad's argument IMO.
I think Shad's argument over why the nunchuks are crap is because anything it can do, a simple stick can do the same w/o the limitations of nunchuks (such as getting hit with it if you don't use it properly) as seen in Wushu Engineer's video.
Now, I actually want to learn how to use nunchuks properly to see for myself its effectiveness and then I'll know.

The whole point of nunchuks is that you can conceal them on your person in a way you can't a stick of the same size. Anything you lose in direct power is a tradeoff you make in favour of concealability.
No they're not a great battlefield weapon. You know what else isn't? A switchblade. Or a derringer that you can fit up your sleeve. They're a tool for an infiltrator, not s professional soldier or an untrained militiaman. People like Shad need to stop analyzing them like they are.

Also, tell me what a nunchuk can do that a stick can't. I'll be waiting. As for concealability, a walking cane cane be a blunt weapon. Hell, a pipe of any material in the same size as a stick can arguably be a better weapon than a nunchuk, and that pipe can be of any size.

@@KartarNighthawk ok, here's the deal. I just want to say for the record that I respect those who prefer the nunchuks as their weapon of choice, and I'm just sharing my point of view here, and explain why I prefer the stick over it. I don't intend to belittle you like that fucker VK does, unless you start calling me names, then it's free game for me.
I will agree that a nunchuk can be more easily concealable than a rigid stick like the ones used in arnis/eskrima. So are small objects like the switchblade & the derringer you mentioned. But these are incomparable because both the switchblade and the derringer have different purposes. The switchblade's purpose is to cut & stab, while the derringer is used to shoot. This would be like comparing a sword to a gun which is not a fair comparison. Shad mentioned this in his video about objectively comparing weapons, so a nunchuk and a stick are a fair comparison. Shad also mentioned in that video that the stick itself is a low-tier weapon compared to other blunt weapons. Of course, if we're going to talk about maces then that is a better weapon than a stick.
I also want to add that a collapsible baton can be concealed just as well as the nunchuk & any of the weapons you mentioned, and have the same function as the stick. Which BTW, is better than a stick can be.
In my humble opinion, w/o adding any insult to this in any way, shape, or form, a stick is easier and safer to use by anyone w/o the disadvantages of a nunchuk such as the risk of hitting yourself if not used properly. This, right here, is why I favor the stick over the nunchuk.

    • @KartarNighthawk
      @KartarNighthawk 2 года назад +4

@@sonofsueraf You're missing the point of the switchblade and derringer comparisons a bit. I'm not comparing a switchblade to a stick or a club, I'm saying that a switchblade is to a dagger, and a palm pistol is to a gun, as nunchuks are to sticks. In each case, you trade out lethality for concealability. Another useful comparison would be a swordcane: it is, 100 percent, less useful than a proper sword in a swordfight. But you can hide the sword cane and you can't (easily) hide a sword.
I wouldn't want to use nunchuks in a fight either--but I'm not trained in their use. And yeah, they're absolutely harder to learn the use of than a regular stick. But that applies to all the concealable weapons I've named. You cannot stab or cut with a folding knife as hard as you can with a dagger; you'll break the hinge. You can't shoot someone with a .22 palm pistol and expect them to collapse the way they would from a .45 Magnum. In each case, you are trading off lethality for the ability to hide it and will accordingly have to train more to use it as effectively.
That's where Shad's analysis goes off the rails. He's treating nunchuks as if they're a battlefield weapon, which they were never used as. Comparing them to a stick, or god forbid a mace or warhammer is like comparing a palm pistol to a rifle or switch knife to a dagger or a sword. They're not meant to do the same thing.

Admittedly, I'd wrote this comment with the belief that Shad was entirely correct but, after having watched a recent video from Skallagrim about the "What's the best weapon" debate and having thought about the dabate around nunchucks more, I find my self disagreeing with Shad. So apologies for having wasted your time with it.
Shad basis his views on whether or not a weapon is good based on how it stacks up against every other weapon in human history (except guns, because obviously guns win for effectiveness) which as Skallagrim has pointed out in a recent video that standard is pointless because not all weapons are designed to fulfill the same roles. From your two videos I can't really tell how you judge weapons to be good or bad, though Shad assumes you judge the effectiveness of weapons based on whether or not it can be a force multiplier.
Having considered the discussion more thoroughly, I personally feel the best way to judge the effectiveness of a weapon is based on how well it did what it was designed to do in its historical context. I'm no expert on Japanese history but, if I'm not mistaken, nunchucks were made during the Japan's feudal period where civilians were banned from owning more conventional weapons like swords. The nunchucks, being based on the design of a common tool in Japan at the time, were made as a workaround and because they were based on a tool there were plenty of people who would've been able to use it as effectively as a knight armed with a longsword and for that, the nunchucks fulfilled it's job.

That means it never causes damage to whoever it is struck with and always damages the wielder badly. It's idiotic prop "weapon" invented for Enter The Dragon. End of summary.

I actually really like this point, because it actually shows something that appears alot in medieval martial arts aswell.
In HEMA, a single, simple body adjustment allows for a completely different strike and or block or parry or what have you.
And, as an outsider to alot of this, simply looking in on it out of an interest in history, I've noticed that alot of European and Asian martial arts are actually very similar, more specifically what I'm referring to is weapon based Martial arts, like swordsmanship.
And this is only I think, because of biomechanics.
Our bodies can only do so much, and so the weapons we create are usually limited by that.
So movements and techniques actually end up becoming very similar without even trying, as does weapon development, like the case of the European long sword, and the Japanese katana.
Anyway, just an observation I've made.

Nunchaku needs less than a week of training. I've heard people suggest absurdities like the flail requires an apprenticeship to learn... when it was a tool used by farmers around the world. You can learn it in hours, if you have to. And of course it's easy to use, since 90% of the world was using them for thousands of years. People who have that much trouble with nunchaku can't be trusted with axes, either.
_"Also isn't i possible with facing a stick welding attacker the strike for the middle of your weapon which could disarm you"_
You mean striking at the chain/cord of the nunchaku? That's work work. At best, you'll entangle your club, and that situation is equal at best.
Armour: Umm... you're seriously underarmed, if you only have a stick to go against an armoured warrior. The flail/nunchaku is slightly better, in that mechanical advantage gives it a very high PSI strike. You can see Weapon Man's videos for examples. Thrusting with a baton is absurdly ineffective, no police manual I know of recommends thrusting.
So largely, Shadi is very incorrect, especially in his original claim that nunchaku are, "GARBAGE! GARBAGE!" Throwing them on the ground.

Then he just added idiotic lies and slander to mix. True novice has his mind open and ready to possibilities - he does not know anything so he must study them.

A weapon needing more training to use doesn't intrinsically make it worse. A halberd requires more training than a spear, which is why it's a good weapon for a professional soldier, and a bad one for a weekend warrior militiaman. Same principle applies here. I'm not handing out nunchuks to my peasant levy, but there no reason not to give them to my infiltrators.

This idea that a stick doesn't need training is foolish. To just swing it - sure. To actually know how to use it as a weapon - nope. Just look at him in this video - he wields a short stick with way more skill than someone who just picks one up and starts swinging it like a baseball bat. People train for years, decades even to get better with the use of a staff. Compared to nunchuks, sure, a stick is easier to wield. But if Shad thinks he is hitting anyone with that flailing, wild swing... he is out of his mind. It is telegraphed from a mile away and I would love to see him go up against the man in this video with a set of chucks. Shad would find out very quickly that he would get smoked whether he had a sword, stick or spear.

Physic Nerd here i can elaborate bv using some averages. ive come up with these numbers to show the difference in forces being applied. Please keep in mind that the mass of the object matters far more than the acceleration when it comes to force.
311.375 Newtons = Average punch with no training.
    351.40 Newtons = Nunchunk strike.
5782.6886 Newtons = Pro heavy weight boxers punch.
35585.776 Newtons = MLB pro player swinging a bat.
2174811.355574 Newtons = 80 Mph head on collision car crash.
The take away is that because you cant lean your body weight into the nunchunk and its only using the mass on the end of the chain you cant generate large forces, Since mass is weighted much more favorably in this equation. Will nunchunks hurt? Absolutely. Can they knock someone unconscious, unless they have a glass chin and any external force can knock them out, unlikely. A average person cant take a heavy weight boxers punch without going limp, but they can a average punch or strike, So the knockout point is somewhere between those two for the average person, Against a pro boxer, nunchucks are worthless, you might make him laugh at best and at worst just piss him off.

Most of the points brought up by (I assume your name is Cooper based on what was said in the beginning) are very interesting. Imperfect but interesting. I must also say that demo in breaking the red oak knife by accident is genuinely impressive. However, I will say I STRONGLY disagree with the whole "we shouldn't throw weapons on the ground because it disrespects the culture" thing. The example given of a student being unable to carry the full weight of a katana being just ground for the sensei to scold him is disgusting. Lord forbid the sensei ensure the student can carry the thing first and gaslight the student over his (the teacher's) short sightedness. The sad part is it's not JUST in martial arts this occurs, but in all aspects of Japan's society. From having everyone be conditioned to be exactly the same and empathizing success over the pursuit of personal joy, it's no wonder that suicide rates are high and birth-rates are so extremely low in Japan right now. Modern youth cannot properly develop in this kind of mentality and cultural norms do not justify it. The only reason this mentality exists in Japan at all is because the nation wants to be bigger than it (honestly) has any right to be. Lot of movies from Japan suggest they view themselves as the center of the world and intend to prove the impossible because of it. At a social cost. If Japan doesn't wisen up, it'll someday be gone.
Do yourself a favor Cooper, don't be sucked into that subconscious desire Japan has to prove it's the best when it is not. I'm not saying we ought to disrespect Japan on purpose, but ALWAYS examine the motives behind a tradition. While this topic is not at all involved in faith, I think Jesus Christ said it best "He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’ But you say that whoever tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,’ then that person need not honor the father. So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God." (Matthew 15:3-6 KJV). A tradition or item is NOT more important than love for your fellow man. A lesson modern Japan is in SORE need of. God bless you and looking forward to seeing more content from you.

if someone really has intend to stab you he will come at you and you will most likely not even know that he has a knife until it's deep inside your flesh. but even if you really would end up in a situation where the guy stands in front of you with his knife and you with your chucks. do you think they dance around like that as if they were fencing? if the opponent wants to kill you he will run into your chucks with the one arm and stab with the other. if you don't manage to knock him out cold with that one maybe two blows you can land then you are dead dude. please stay realistic.

A surprise short range attack is useless whatever weapon you have the knife is superior to that regardless if you open carry a sword, conceal a gun etc. Technique is still important, and a struggle to stop the stabs and slices with adrenaline running is possible if you're an experienced knife fighter vs the stabby bum rusher. You forget that you can turn over someone even bigger than you and turn them on their backs...it's called using force to throw them off balance when using the ground with your feet and legs. The reason you don't see that with humble fighters and not killers is because they can block that cause they're experienced fighters. Again you argue that the knifefighter in this video didn't know what he was doing. But you're recommending a bum rush stabby stabby technique which experienced knife fighters don't do. But I do agree a surprise peripheral attack might be effective but you risk being grabbed and you'd have to pray if that guy is still alive that he doesn't seek vengeance on you and does a reprisal. So martial arts isn't all that bullshit.
Anyway, for someone that telegraphs their knife attack at a short but striking distance, or when the knife kill shot wasn't successful and both men are back on their feet or the knife attacker was pushed away would you like to demonstrate bum rushing into an oncoming stick or steel coming at you at full speed and force won't stun you? Ever thought about using footwork like backing up and then striking and stepping at the side and different angles so their centerline will miss? Or kicking or kneeing them for distance. I'm pretty sure an experienced swordfighter with better footwork and technique will have an advantage over one that bumrushes and also uses a sword. Again if someone bumrushes you real quick you can use some judo if you're good at it to throw them off balance and trip them while struggle for the knife or sprawl to stop the takedown.
Same with knife fighting. Don't be afraid with adrenaline running when stabbed or sliced, but what about impact weapons do they stop the person from attacking? You can block or parry their momentum. Technique is actually valuable. I mean it's all speculation. At least milani fitness does admit it isn't a weapon for every weapon, or admit that there's no data of the nunchuk vs knife because it's rare. But imagine this. Imagine there are several knife fighters, would you carry a knife to handle 3-4 people or the nunchuks swinging it horizontally at multiple targets or knifing multiple targets? Of course the smarter thing to do is run, but what if you run into a dead end wall?
We're talking about people that get into altercations and the smarter fighter will distance himself.

@UCZWNfc3z4EB6h7WBGWkCjCQ my point was just that it's an absolutely arbitrary scenario and adds absolutely nothing to the discussion. i was just thinking from the perspective of the knife wielder and how i would approach IF i would actually be in a fight like that with the intent to kill. fuck that one hit i might take while i go in with my empty hand and arm first. but then i'm in stabbing range. the guys entire stance is kinda wrong. who would have the knife in the leading hand so it can be knocked away? it's not a sword with any meaningful range. you would keep your free hand towards the opponent and the knife behind.
the point of his video and a lot of others was if nunchucks are a dumb weapon or not and if or if not nunchucks are worse than other weapons. so if you do a sparing to proof a point here it should be at least realistic because as it is done here it means absolutely nothing.
it's just a syndrome that a lot of martial artists suffer. they forget that their shit often only works against another martial artist.

Got into this little back and forth debate recently. Glad that I came in now to see this upload so early! Seeing both sides, I think you both make really good points. I definitely wouldn't go for nunchaku as my first choice for self-defence, because as Shad said, it's very easy to injure yourself. However, as you've pointed out, they can pack a punch and are easy to conceal if you've trained with them well. Shad argued that you can conceal a stick easily, but because that does not fold, it's definitely not the same. If I was trying to hide a weapon, I'd have a much easier time hiding nunchaku than I would hiding a sai of the same length. And on the topic of injuring yourself...You can definitely hurt yourself with a "stick", although the risk is lower compared to nunchaku. Had a guy in my karate class swing his bo staff really hard with both hands closer to one end. The shorter end closer to him struck him in the gut and left a really nasty bruise. He wasn't incompetent by any means, just got too reckless.
I think nunchaku are past their prime now. They were definitely useful at a time where farmers needed to fight with whatever they had, while also not being obvious. Now, without these restrictions, there are definitely better options than nunchaku. But this does not make them trash.
By this logic, all weapons that are not firearms are "garbage". These weapons were created to best suit the era and circumstances they were made in. Swords are not "garbage" just because they pale in comparison to firearms in terms of range and lethality.
Debate aside and to end this on a positive note, looking forward to see more of your content! I quit karate roughly 4 years ago to focus on art, but I still have my bo and sais in the closet. Seeing these videos makes me miss my old dojo...It would be nice to practice again!

Several youtubers have proven that self-injury idea was laughable. Even maximal rebound caused intentionally won't bruise your hand. Shadi claimed to have experience, but looked like a stunned fish in the second video, when he found you could push with a nunchaku... because he's never hit a target for as much as an hour before those videos, despite his empty boasts about experience. That's why he's the only person to feel the need to use a helmet to demonstrate nunchaku.
Everyone I know learned nunchaku within a week. I've heard of some people so incompetent they hit themselves in the head... but I wouldn't trust them with a wood axe or a sharp kitchen knife, either, much less a sword or a military flail. They're urbanites, men without any physical skill.
_"Had a guy in my karate class swing his bo staff really hard with both hands closer to one end. The shorter end closer to him struck him in the gut and left a really nasty bruise. He wasn't incompetent by any means, just got too reckless."_
Training accidents do happen, with all weapons. You play with knives, you will get cut. The idea nunchaku are far more dangerous, though, is rubbish that stems from all the people trying to do flashy tricks with them....
_"I think nunchaku are past their prime now. They were definitely useful at a time where farmers needed to fight with whatever they had, while also not being obvious."_
Not so. They're actually more in their prime now than in any other era, since criminals find them very useful to ambush people with. Check out Object History's video, where he goes into details on how the police are using them in various places.
_"By this logic, all weapons that are not firearms are "garbage". These weapons were created to best suit the era and circumstances they were made in. Swords are not "garbage" just because they pale in comparison to firearms in terms of range and lethality."_
Consider the 21 foot rule. A gun is not always the best weapon. Still, it does demonstrate how faulty Shadi's logic was.

@@vanivanov9571 Looks like there was a misunderstanding. To clarify, I didn't mean that nunchaku were extremely dangerous to the user. They definitely aren't. I'm saying that it's easy to hit yourself with them. I've used them before, and with how they swing around, it's very easy to hit yourself. The problem however, isn't the pain of the rebound (it doesn't hurt much honestly) it's trying to catch the bloody thing from behind you. The way Milani demonstrates it here is flawless, I'm seriously in awe. But I can tell you that it's much harder than it looks to catch that thing under your arm after you swing it back. If you miss the catch, once it bounces off your shoulder, you're left in a really awkward position. This isn't an issue if you've mastered it, but for amateurs, there is definitely a greater chance of fumbling about with it compared to other weapons. In short, if you haven't mastered them, you'll find much better luck with a simpler weapon. Nunchaku aren't for everyone. That's not to insult them, it's just a fact.
On the matter of being past their prime, I say that because nowadays if someone really wanted to defend themselves on the street, they would have many options to choose from. The strength of the nunchaku I think comes from how easy it is to conceal and how during its time, it doubled as a farming tool. Because people nowadays don't need to convert farming tools into weapons, the choices they have are greater and you can pick something much easier to use if you dont have the co-ordination for nunchaku. That said, if someone finds nunchaku works for them, by all means they should go ahead and use what they're comfortable with.
And yes, my point on firearms was to comment on how shad was focusing so much on power output. Of course non-firearm weapons have their advantages in modern day, especially if you dont want to outright kill someone or seriously injure them.

@@waddledeeart6019 Just felt I needed to state that, since many people would take your statement to the extreme Shadi meant it, where he joked about being more likely to disable yourself than your opponent.
You can certainly get nicked doing the various stuff many schools teach, with nunchaku. But using it like a normal flail, it is quite simple, same as other flails. Todd and Matt did a video where some people tried out flails for the first time in their lives... and they did a pretty good job in their sparring.
There are a lot of options, but nunchaku are the best at giving reach, force, and concealability in a melee package (and most crimes happen within 21 feet). It's also less-lethal force, which is handy to avoid legal trouble. That's why it's very popular with criminals, and certain defenders.

Pretty sure once someone moves onto wooden or steel nunchaku after practicing with foam, the chances of that are much lower.
As for how popular it is on the street, I wouldn't know. I've never seen or heard of them used like that, but I'm sure it happens. They are pretty flexible. Again, if we go by his words and compare weapons to each other in this way...Then by that logic, focusing solely on how easy they are to use and their raw power, wouldn't that make everything that is not a firearm "garbage"?? It's a flawed comparison.

You gotta get that guy some proper gear, he's gonna get a broken nose. 😂
Something I do notice in this exchange though that even with this fella's clear hesitance likely due to proper protection, he does still manage to make contact or near contact with you, so he does close the distance very quickly even with you swinging at him.
Which, I mean, if you know anything about modern self defense, you'll know one of the biggest talking points is always the guy with the knife will always close the distance to the guy with the gun.
So im not at all surprised that he's still able to hit you, or at least get close.
People who have trained on and used guns as apart of their jobs for years will tell you that a guy with a knife can and WILL close that distance quickly and get himself in stabbing range.
Guns are just, patently better than most ancient weapons.
    At least modern guns.
And that's why I use this example.
Because if a gun can have it's distance closed so quickly, and it has infinitely more range than the nunchucks, obviously a guy with a knife is going to close the distance to someone with nunchucks.
Moreover the gun and the nunchuk are actually comparable for this instance, no, not in their effectiveness, obviously one is better, but in that both create range between you and your attacker. Both create a sense of unease on approach.
Both are intimidating. Both may cause hesitation.
And both, similarly, have issues with closing the distance, in that someone determined enough to do so, will almost always reach you before you can reach them, or at least at the same time as you're able to.
    Very vool video dude! :D
Though I do have other criticisms, but I get the feeling it may not matter to you.
Because I don't have experience using nunchucks, you may even discount my comparisons earlier.
Though I do in fact have experience using firearms. I've been doing that on and off on various ranges since I was about 12 years old.
    It's really fun.
Anyway, I only say this because even in this video you see to still hold to this idea that experience discounts observation.
Which in some cases, experience might discount observation.
But let me ask you something.
If I was to say the sky was purple, would you believe me?
    Probably not. Why?
Well because you can look outside and see the sky is blue and not purple.
    And so can I.
Will that observation become invalid without any extensive knowledge of why the sky is blue, or will the sky simply just always be blue?
Experience is valuable, but it isn't everything.

Very good level of real combat nunchaku in demonstration, this is rare. Even if I think there is still a way to be more sober while being just as effective... So, obviously you can't compare the nunchaku with the stick, the characteristics are not the same and the two weapons don't match each other. not use in the same way, the nunchaku is a very singular weapon which has its own advantages and weaknesses (which can be overcome with an adapted footwork), some simply do not understand it and think "Oh, that sucks", so trivial .. .This is a PERSONAL melee weapon, not designed for the battlefield, so pls stop comparing it with those weapons. The nunchaku has its own advantages, I don't want to elaborate (or feed the pigs too much), but it has to do with its velocity and the exploitation of its inclination on certain angles of attack. Of course, you can't see it if you don't practice it seriously... so, commentator puffed up with certainties, the rule is the same for everything : if you don't master a subject by practice, it's better to keep your mouth shut ...

The only beauty of nunchuck I could think of is probably its dedication required to master. But from a practical perspective, it is so much worse than any other weapon for any purpose. It requires so much training just to not hit yourself, has no defensive capability, and so on and so forth...
Nunchuck is more like art such as carving. Wood carving is also a part of woodworking. It's beautiful. Can you carve a functional chair? Technically, yes. But is it practical? No. Is it beautiful and worth admiration? Yes.

Wars have already proven it. The most prominent weapons were swords, sticks, staffs, spears, daggers... and guns. Dagger training is even practiced in military training, but nunchuck? Is this the "research" part you want? History? Military training? There is nothing new to it. Facts are facts and require no "newness" to themselves.
Nunchucks are just... inefficient. Nobody says that it's useless compared to nothing (though questionably).

Unfortunately none fo the arguments you said make nunchuck an effective weapon. The sparing you had with your friend is something that would end almost immediately if you had a stick of comparable size to the nunchuck. And that is just the easiest way to disprove the effectivness of nunchucks. Most paople have close to none combat training and thus cannot perform the level of avoidance needed if someone with a knife attacks them. Also I can't think of any weapon of comparable size to the nunchucks that I would not prefer over nunckucks. Knives and daggers are both smaller in reach so I don't believe that is a good comparison. Maybe a machete would be better...
Next thing. You said you are not a physicist. Well I studied some physics at university and you're right, that is some basic level physics right there. Not Newton's laws though. It's called the law of "conservation of energy". It says that the amount of energy must stay constant in a closed system. That means that the kinetic energy of the weapon is transfered into the target as a force. This is where the Newton's law of action and reaction comes into play. The amount of force one object hits another object with is the same as the amout of force the second object hits the first one with. Easiest way of explaining is if you've ever hit something and felt a backlash in your hand.
Just so that this doesn't become some thesis I'll summarize the science.
When you hit something with a nunchuck the only part transfering the kinetic energy into the target is the upper part of the nunchuck (the hitting part). When you hit something with a stick the part that is transfering kinetic energy into the target is the whole stick and if you've ever hit something with a stick you know that aour arm and part of your bode as well. The comparison between the two is unimaginable.
And a very important part. A weapon cannot be usable to a good degree by professionals for it to be an "effective weapon". An effective weapon is one you can give to a 100 untrained men, and have them perform to a satisfying level within the shortest time possible.
PS: The most simple argument I can think of. How many weapons in the history of warfare were solid and how many had a structure similar to that of a nunchuck. Why was that? The most effective way of using a nunchuck is probably to break the chain holding the two sticks together and use them separately...
PPS: Sorry but english isn't my native language so there might be quite a few mistakes in the text (especially the technical parts).
