Fun fact: when I was in USMC Boot Camp, we trained with flak jackets, which were a protective clothing not meant to stop any actual ammunition, but hypothetically were able to protect you from shrapnel or knives. They were fairly lightweight and flexible compared to their strength, and were made with a kevlar weave. One of the many things we had to do in training was the bayonet course in which we had to stab a dummy wearing a real flak jacket, and we did not pass the course unless we were able to jam the bayonet through the kevlar and into the dummy.

Not very surprising at all, to the best of my knowledge there is not stab resistant fabric out there, yet, that can stop or resist a stab without multiple layers. Even Kevlar is known to do poorly vs. stabs unless you use lots and lots of layers or unless you glue them together to form solid plates in the same way they make Kevlar helmets.
@Riceball01 Just multiple layers of nylon works. The old US Army Flak vest will stop a full bore knife trust with deadly intent. Source: Witnessing a knife attack on a battle buddy. The attacker was taken to the ground and detained as an enemy combatant. Yes, obviously, this was before we got IBA.

This happened years ago (in the mid 90s) but was a guy who participated in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) here in the US. Now this was late at night & he had to be at work later but didn't have time to fully change so just put his work shirt on over the chain mail shirt. Turned his back for a moment on a customer at the checkout & suddenly ended up with a knife in his back. The instant surprise that the assault did nothing let the guy overpower his attacker & subdue until cops arrived. When they did it took 2 cops to pull the knife out of the shirt given how well bound up it was in the links. Injuries were minor...just a couple stitches. Pretty sure he kept wearing that mail under his work shirt after that.
I were workshop brigandine tailored to fit under a sleeveless vests. I had my 5th shiving attempt against me by 14 & ever since I do not leave my residence in London without gorged, brig with groin protection & secrete under a cap or hat. wear what you please but I will wear 16 to 18 gauge surface hardened steel at 19 Ib's but I did lighten it with some titanium of 1.5 mil gauge but they are cheap though I got as scrap being a former fabrication Engineer till my failed health I would take scrap bit & ends of titanium that no one would miss. My brigandine modified over 14 years now weighs 12 & 1/2s Ib's. I still trust steel more then Titanium but I'm not as young & fit as I once was since I got corona in 2020 which knocked me side ways. If it was not for the cost & hazard I would like plates of silicon carbide as it is a 1/4 the weight of Titanium which is nearly 1/2 the weight of steel. Silicon carbide is 9.5 Moh's while hardened steel & titanium is about 6. You could make a vest or brig of silicon come out at about 7ib's which is nothing. My secrete & gorget is just hardened aluminium at about 3 Moh's but it is far better then nothing from 1st hand experience. Aluminium covering your neck in segments under your beard is a massive improvement to ones protection. For my limbs I wear a great coat or a thick leather jacket to just below my buttocks & my legs I like tall sturdy boots with putees to knee height. You would be surprised what wrapped up decent fabric can sustain against but foot work is best in combat for if you are moving then the opponent shouldn't get at your legs. People just think I'm eccentric in my appearance but it is all practical. I can wear a suit even & people don't notice so the bulk is not noticeable since I tailored it to by frame.
Yeah sure that stuff might be of some help against ONE amateur. Against someone who knows where to aim, useless. Against a gang also useless Reminder - cowards prefer to attack like packs of hyenas.
In London, east end youth street gangs stab each other. Elsewhere, you are very, very unlikely to be stabbed. Even if you add the gangs in, still 2x safer for stabbings than anywhere in the USA. I'd walk anywhere any time of day and night in that city, and I have. And you can send your kid to school without them getting shot to death by incels too, obviously.
being nitpicky : the tests on the chainmail are kind of useless as the mail is hanging loose and not resting on a solid body, which significantly changes the dynamics of a stab.
You can see how much the blade flexes at 19:25 so there's definitely a lot of force going in to it but the question is what the impulse looks like with that setup. I think the biggest problem is that the mail is effectively doubled up because there's nothing in between the front and back of it.
They have also done proper chainmail testing in past videos, it was mostly done here for quick reference, for those who might not have seen the older videos
@@johnchestnut5340 yeah, which is not a body with the chainmail wrapped around. You can stab the wood through the chainmail with a tip fine enough and it will stop the blade -- the wood will. While on a body you can stab the chainmail and with enough force and a purpose shaped blade you will have a chance at ripping the rivets and penetrating the chainmail. Not half a centimeter but a lot more, since there's no wood to stop the blade. ;) But yes, they did better tests already.
From a UK perspective, with the exception of the Kitchen knife, you used weapons extremely unlikely to be used in a street attack whilst ignoring the Machete which is frequently used. We have literal machete fights on the streets of some cities and there are frequent attacks with them.

Most kevlar isn't stab resistant. Slash yes, but a drop point knife let alone the blades youre using will go right through even a Bullet resistant vest. This is why there are vests (Police/Military/Ect) have to be rated for specific types of prevention. You can stab straight through a level 3A vest, which can stop bullets. There are Ballistic resistant, Slash resistant, and then Stab/Spike resistant vest ratings. You can get something that is combo rated but they are usually a combo of lower rates armors. I would think the shirt is only rated for slash resistant, not spike/stab resistant. Reason being is the way Kevlar is woven. The tip of a knife/spike will separate the fibers and puncture something that isn't Spike/Tab rated.
finally find a professional comment. that's why there are bulletproof standard and rates, stab proof standard and rates, cut proof standard and rates , seperately.
@@aaaaaa-gq3dv thought they have both; kevlar to tangle the bullet and plate to dissipate the resulting blunt force. Although that'll eventually get into argument what is the plates made of; steel, ceramic, composites..
Considering that body armour is illegal in Australia for civilians, this could be the best way to protect oneself if you're worried about being attacked.
Is it all body armour or just bullet resistant armor? I know in Canada in many provinces you need your gun license to get body armour, but stab proof stuff is exempt. They might rule these prohibited if the plates can stop even small arms fire though
Remind me, wasn't Kamikoto the Chinese company selling low-grade trash falsely branded as Japanese knives? RUclipsrs should really be more careful with their sponsorships.
Wonder what a modernised equivalent of a full upper body gambeson would be like, although nobody has tried but I imagine it would offer protection from both blunt force and blade.
"You're unlikely to come up against katanas and rambo knives" Shad... you've been to wales. Cardiff at night can be crazy, but next time come to the valleys it what we call a tuesday
I was in Cardiff last spring. Caught an early train on Saturday with my wife and kids. Can confirm. The party was getting started when we went to bed. The zombies, who had looked like corpses collapsed on the street all day, started to stir as the sun set. People literally rose out of the tall grass in the park near the castle. It was freaking creepy, and we were glad to get inside for the night. Down town was a disater area in the morning. My ten year old was cursed out by a vagrant just for looking in his direction from thirty feet away. He started following us but backed off when I turned in his direction so the family could skedaddle. Loved our visit otherwise. Took a guided Doctor Who tour. Terrance, our tour guide, was fantastic. We kept in touch and exchanged christmas cards. The rest of the city was absolutely lovely as well. Shame about the party zombies.
@crwydryny I meant every word : ) Still loved our visit. After we got home, I built a wooden castle for the kids. 20x25, and twelve feet at its tallest with four towers and a two story keep. The kids named it "Yardiff Castle". Cardiff left an impression : )
something to keep in mind is Kevlar is a name brand, not all fabrics claiming to be Kevlar actually are. Also Kevlar (brand) never claimed to be stab/cut proof. The way their fabric works is like a catchers mitt for blunt projectiles. Anything sharp will just slash the fabric
Yeah the shirt not being stab proof is a let down, but the fact that a SHIRT stopped a full force slash from a very sharp actual usable sword is pretty damned impressive imo.
I'm not sure how it would help if it was "stab proof". Stab proof how, anyway? Even if the fabric didn't break on the stab, the knife - wrapped around the shirt - would still likely break the skin and enter your bowels. ;)
The thing with the tshirt is that even if it was utterly cut resistant youd still get cut under it. Its so thin it would just push the tshirt into the wound
There was a company in Germany back in the late 90's that made titanium chainmail, mainly for bouncers and bodyguards. Quite fashionable, too. Mostly polo shirts, so you could pop the collar to protect the neck, even. I remember there being a lot of interest, but it was stupid expensive, which is probably why I've never seen that armour in real life. Don't think they're still around.
There's a bit of a flaw in your testing method comparison: The chainmail is up against a solid wall taking the full force of any strike, while the figure can fall backwards translating some of the force into movement, meaning it will not take all of it.
You should probably have put the chainmail on a dummy as it not having a solid surface behind it but just letting it hang affected the test. Otherwise no complaints. Interesting clothes.
They take a modular approach, sell empty clothing with armor pockets so you can customize the kind of protection you want and help hit a price point that you want.
Attacking the side (under the armpit) is great for close proximities... like handshake or hug distance. You can generate more force being able to bring the knife out farther (again in close proximity). If you are behind someone and assuming you're right handed, you can attack the liver. Not having plates on the side is going to be a definite issue against someone that knows what they are doing.
Good rule of thumb to make a guess when it comes to these materials: Kevlar (DuPont's para-aramid) is yellow naturally, and so yellow is usually aramid. Dyneema (trademarked UHMWPE or cuben fiber) is typically white or light grey. My guess is the shirt is some sort of Dyneema, and is most likely not marketed as "stab proof," but rather "cut resistant" or "slash resistant." Which is used and when varies a lot depending on a lot of factors, but these two are the go-to's when designing modern soft armors. Just my . 02. Keep kicking ass gentlemen!
As a ballistic-armor admirer, its job is to be tough enough to save your life at least once while being a light as it can. This really looks like it emulates that with stabbing/slashing. A lvl4 plate vest won't stop you from getting shot in the neck but anything that ups your odds of a miss is a win. Plus I'm sure someone wearing this getting attacked would be running or moving, just adding the glancing opportunity is enough to help you run to safety or help without possibly bleeding out.
I enjoyed this test. There is one big "BUT" in the protection. The force of the hit on the person even if the soft or medium armor doesn't allow it threw. A stopped blade means it is turned into impact damage. Point impact will sometimes do massive impact damage. It is the reason the true thrust proof armor is more hardened. Even bullets stopped by a vest or plate can transmit the bullet damage to impact damage causing a lot of damage. Even the chain mail has this flaw. It might stop something, but the point of impact still causes a lot of damage. Take Care and Stay Safe, guys.
As a Native American of the Southwest, I always thought about getting armor, I do herd sheep's and the most dangerous predators we have are Moutain Lions, I wonder if there are any good armors to get.

Can’t wait for the day when the title says “…and it’s exactly what we expected.” Any day now.

Jokes aside this was a very interesting video with quite suprising results. I am realy looking forward to the testing of the Raincoat variant. Maybe in a couple of months one of the modern weapons channels makes a gun test for those clothes as well. I'm quite curious wether those plates are actually able to stop small caliber projectiles.
this would be great in London but i think the police might arrest you for having armor without a license.
True, they'd probably find a way to arrest for wearing armor. It might be legal until they upgrade the laws again. In The Union, it's illegal.
At this point the London police would arrest people for thinking about armor silently.
Tbf , if you do get stabbed and "got isekai'd", it may reduce the percentage of native people in london...so it would look good on their government data. (based on their "representation" goals)

I have a NIJ-3A+ vest and jacket combo that I wear when I visit sketchy areas, and they aren't overly cumbersome. Even without the plates each will stop a 9mm or a knife, with major bruising, but with plates they're rated up to a .44 Mag.

I have a feeling the shirt is more cut resistant than stab resistant....
Cause that went straight through.

Nooo! Swindon is safe, you mean Penhill valley...
Well well well, newest London fashion
i actually wear stab vest. Live in Hampshire
Good idea.

There is a solid wooden back.
Not half a centimeter but a lot more, since there's no wood to stop the blade. ;)
But yes, they did better tests already.
I'd love for this to be a series. Medieval Vs Modern
"We're going to put it up against stuff that it was not... Intended... To try and resist."

That's why cops hate Stilettos so much.
Goes straight through their fancy little vest all day long.
But vests are rated for bullets have plates, not kevlar. There's no way you can cut through those plates with a knife.
@@aaaaaa-gq3dvyou can cut past them at the joints
finally find a professional comment. that's why there are bulletproof standard and rates, stab proof standard and rates, cut proof standard and rates , seperately.
This is body armour. Depending on the state will determine if it meets the legislated criteria.
Is it all body armour or just bullet resistant armor? I know in Canada in many provinces you need your gun license to get body armour, but stab proof stuff is exempt. They might rule these prohibited if the plates can stop even small arms fire though

Shame about the party zombies.

something to keep in mind is Kevlar is a name brand, not all fabrics claiming to be Kevlar actually are.

Euro Simulator. Unwanted Invasion DLC
Oh, I assure you, the invasion is very much wanted. By our corrupt governments, that is.
You guys can be ridiculous. This is so awesome. I can't believe I was not recommended this video when y'all posted it.
There are some manufacturers who make particularly fine stainless steel chain mail all welded together
Ahhh I see that Shad is well prepared for his next trip to London.
No bec de corbin resistant armor, how dare I go out at dark 😰
That is. It's called a tank. Qiote unwieldy though, and very disliked at social occasions.
you need to get like full steel plate armor or something
They take a modular approach, sell empty clothing with armor pockets so you can customize the kind of protection you want and help hit a price point that you want.
When will they start selling stab resistant clothing that is just clothing but with chainmail & padding inside a jacket?
Don't let that idea go to waste, try and find a way to manufacturer it and make it a reality
Thank you for actually making videos long enough to be worth watching. I don't even bother with shorts, the ads take longer than the video most times.
The mail should be filling something that provides resistence.
Good rule of thumb to make a guess when it comes to these materials:
Kevlar (DuPont's para-aramid) is yellow naturally, and so yellow is usually aramid.
Dyneema (trademarked UHMWPE or cuben fiber) is typically white or light grey. My guess is the shirt is some sort of Dyneema, and is most likely not marketed as "stab proof," but rather "cut resistant" or "slash resistant."
Which is used and when varies a lot depending on a lot of factors, but these two are the go-to's when designing modern soft armors.
Just my .
This was freaking amazing! Keep up the good work.
