    It's actually very interesting how Shad's video triggerd a series of high quality informative videos on the actual way to use nunchakus, aside from the flashy useless holliwood thing that we all know. Bro you are the real pro of nunchuks! I tried explaining the same points you said in that video's comments section but no one believed me there when I pointed out we need to put more amount of training to learn the mistakes we may do to perfectly learn that art of striking without getting hit back by our own nunchuks. Thanks for making this video bro!
    Others think that making fancy helicopter spins are useless which is true but those moves are not meant for striking but just to switch from one hand to other. I hope they understand the fact through this video. 👍

    This is a fantastic video for practicality. I personally believe to use them however you feel comfortable while remaining effective. Don't try to do what other people do necessarily, learn your own style. I have practiced for years and it may seem like how I use them is flashy, similar to Bruce Lee, but I can't help but use them that way, so I do. Then again I don't use the metal ones, I use really thick wooden ones on a cord. I'll also be released my response video to Shadiversity soon. Great points!

      Who cares? Doesn't make it a garbage weapon. This guy understands how to use it properly without hitting himself in the nuts and face. That was one of Shad's weakest arguments imo. It's like saying flying planes is just too hard for dumb people so the military needs to cut funding to the airforce and focus only only ground stuff. FU lol Shad is not an authority on asian martial arts. He only does HEMA. I think he is biased. Some weapons are categorised as non-lethals like pepper spray, flash grenade, taser etc...There may be ethical or tactical reason to not want to kill a person. Cops could put spikes on baton to be mean but maybe that's not ethical? We could blow the earth up with nukes, but maybe not wise. Is it possible that despite nunchucks being non-lethal they may be preferred as weapon on weak opponents the same way police usage of pistols on criminals is good enough and they don't NEED military grade LMG against bank robbers despite the military weapons being better at killing? As a nerd Shad can be a little immature.

    • @vanivanov9571
      @vanivanov9571 3 года назад +5

      If he hits himself trying to swing nunchaku, then he's not just naive, he's incompetent. You shouldn't trust him with an axe, either, as he will probably chop himself in the leg (surprisingly easy to do). Yet, people won't say axes are terrible weapons....
      Like this video, this one demonstrates just how easy nunchaku are to use: /watch?v=f4yUTv4vLpw

    • @aslakjacobsen1517
      @aslakjacobsen1517 3 года назад +2

      @@vanivanov9571 first off, hitting yourself in the leg with an axe is possible when you are chopping wood, not actually swinging for someones head. But my (and shads) point stands, a weapon that requires a lot of training to be used effectively isnt a good weapon, Anyone can point and shoot a gun at close range, even children manages that.

    • @aslakjacobsen1517
      @aslakjacobsen1517 3 года назад +7

      @@UToobUsername01 Shad does not have to be an authority on asian martial arts in order to see if one of their weapons sucks, thats simply an appeal to authority fallacy. And if one of your arguments is "he is biased" then i can just as easily say the same about you or this dude in the video. Im unsure what your point about the spiked batons are supposed to be, but if its lethality then that comes into play when talking about weapons. Also you seem to be EXTREMELY missinformed when it comes to firearms, American police have access to what you call "military grade", they dont have LMG's, because those are too heavy to carry around, or use in the event of a bank robbery. But the only standard of "military" grade personnel weapons are if they are fully automatic or not, and some other smaller ones like barrel length and attachments. Look, all im saying is: the points Shad made boils down to simple physics. And i know if i had to choose between a baton or nunchuks, im going with the baton

    If you hit anyone with a nunchuk it will obviously hurt the opponent. But compared to many other weapons is simply not as effective. A simpler approach is a very good point as it is essentially a flail. But the stick point that Shad had is very good. And retractable sticks do exist btw. Like batons you can hide.

The speed Nunchakus are primarily for show not self-defense, they are short in length and lightweight. I am not as skilled as you are with Nunchakus but when friends or family see mine in the garage, they ask me if I know how to use them and when I say yes, they of course ask me to show them. I have 5 pairs, but I use one of these 2 to show them: Cocobolo 14-inch 7 link chain or my Black poisonwood 16 inch, with 5.5-inch paracord and while I use them fluidly and quick enough (while holding them like you do at the end) the speed is not what they had hoped for lol. In 40 years, I have used them only twice in real life, both times to stop a vicious dog attacking a small dog.

I agree with pretty much everything you say. I would add that there are many effective ways of using a nunchaku two-handed that are impossible with a stick, but not all of them are effective with the collapsible nunchaku. I haven't had one of those in a long time. Of course, you have the advantage of being able to collapse to 1/2 the length of an equivalent collapsible baton, so there's that. I'll be checking out more of your videos.

There are better and simpler weapons out there. But those who choose Nunchaku as a weapon have patience and dedication. It can be as effective as anything else. The wielder is what makes the difference. And I agree that for one who is looking for quick results and not too much training or obstacle to overcome, Nunchaku are stupid.

I do believe these techniques could be employed by the average person with little or no training (one of the points shadiversity makes) Also shadiversity fails to address the fact that with proper technique, the head of the flail(nunchuck) can develop higher velocity than the hand. (force multiplier). However, would I choose the nunchuck over other weapons on a battlefield? most likely no. That being said, I can see situations for self-defense and close-quarters fighting where the nunchuck could outperform other weapons available. Good video.

    The entire argument is: a proper trained user with a nunchuk can be deadly.
    Just defeated itself, if someone without training can be more deadly with just a improved weapon or not even that (like a stick) then your weapon already shows it's flaws.
    For example, 14 and 15 century bows and crossbows were better/stronger than the time arquebus or other powder weapons of the time, but was easier to a untrained peasant to use a arquebus than a bow/crossbow and be close to as deadly, we know who won in the end.
    So again, if your weapon needs a set of specific circumstances to be better than any improvised shit, then it is a bad weapon.

      Nearly there. Except for the fact that a stick of the same size can not be concealed in the same way. Hence, the sweeper or nunchuck finds its niche.
      It also has a different quality to the force being a semi flexible weapon.
      A baton is not a nunchuck a nunchuck is not a baton.

    Barring guns, the only weapon a person is likely to come up against in a real world scenario that they couldn't easily run away from is a knife or dagger. In that respect, nunchucks seem like a pretty ideal defense if both people were roughly the same size and height. The person with the knife just wanted to rob or rape you, he wasn't looking for a fight where he didn't have the reach advantage.

    In general you need to know what weapons may do in substandard or non ideal conditions. Even under the poorest conditions, you need to really make a mistake to strike yourself with a solid firm weapon, because in general the strike and all of it's force, are moving away from you and it would need to be significantly redirected to hit you the wielder. Swing with a sword, an axe, a mace, a staff, the energy is moving away from you and being propelled by your own mass, even thrusting with pole arms, spears or swords again the energy is moving away from you. Compared to the nunchucks, there is the ever present possibility that they could rebound and some of the striking force could end up being directed into you the wielder. With training, proper stance and proper technique you can very realistically mitigate this possibility but randomness is always possible and you can never completely prevent it. That is a significant problem for any weapon and makes them substantially less effective.
    Also on the topic of force, you make a statement that doesn't add up when you look at the physics. Nunchucks gain no extra momentum or "whipping force" when they swing. An investigation into the physics of the item will demonstrate this. The only forces at play when striking with them are the mass or the total amount of the materials weight and the acceleration of the swing arc. The acceleration of the swing arc is directly proportional to how fast/hard you swing them and how long they are. These forces apply to both nunchucks and any solid weapon without a linkage point.

    • @IronBodyMartialArts
      @IronBodyMartialArts  3 года назад

      When swinging a Nunchuck there is centrifugal/petal force that can not be achieved with a stick, as usually you cant rotate your wrist as fast as the pivot on the chain or rope.. so i disagree with your statement.. There is another force.. it is a greater centrifugal force, it is the hallmark of chain and whip weapons..but.. your point sounded good and i see where you are coming from. Perhaps overly absolute as you can see now..
      This point has been overlooked by most.
      Great comment thread and i agree with your first point,,
      Thanks for putting the time to make such an engaging comment..

    • @vksasdgaming9472
      @vksasdgaming9472 3 года назад

      As long as you do not strike towards yourself (outside towards inside) there is no practical risk of hitting yourself and even with already mentioned direction is very small. In short: don't wrap your strike towards your head. Rebound is non-issue as it will not mysteriously reach striker's skull from end of his arm and actually nunchaku feels more pleasant to strike with than rigid weapons as recoil is absorbed by cord/chain.
      Perils of nunchaku are vastly exaggerated and same applies to its difficulty of use as weapon. Learning to hit passed ping pong balls takes lots of effort to learn, but striking a target (mobile or not) is much easier.

      It is not impossible and sounds plausible, but it does not make nunchaku useless GARBAGE which is worse than being unarmed. It certainly can be used for that purpose. Swords and naginata were purposefully made weapons so of course repurposed tool or training equipment is inferior to them. Assuming nunchaku is Okinawan weaponized flail its creators also knew it was not as good as sword.
      There might have been exchange like this.
      Spoken by Toshiro: admiring Akiras sword: hey Akira, how you got that sword?
      Akira: I took it from samurai I beat to pulp. He survived and will remember that day well.

      No, but you can have a baton. Retractable ones exist. The thing about 'The Stick' stance Shad has is it makes sense. A baton (aka 'a stick') requires far less finesse to strike someone and strike effectively. Nunchuku and other flail weapons, even if you use it as 'simply' as this video describes and not the hollywood flashy style, the weapon's effectiveness worsens immensely in restrictive spaces such as a dark alleyway. If you can't swing the nunchuku around as easily you lose a lot of oomph you could of had otherwise while with a baton you aren't nearly as restricted. PLUS you gain the benefit of being able to thrust with it while flail weapons aren't nearly as good for that.
      Not to mention the sheer defensive upside flails don't have simply by being a solid item, not divided by chain which you can use to block incomming blows.
      And a stick is far less energy intensive than a weapon that requires you to have to spin it all around to gain any sort of meaningful momentum to deal some damage while simultaneously leaving you wide open. Plus you don't need to practice in a backyard or training area to handle a baton like you would other super specialized weapon like chaku or other martial arts weaponry.
      Practicality is generally what Shad mentions in his videos. The energy/effort to pay off for a weapon like this is just not as worth while as a basic stick or even a baseball bat. Especially when you can get MORE force with less cost with two handing a bat or something. In a fight a nunchaku user, I could imagine, would be more tired than someone using almost any other melee weapon because they're always on the defensive, constantly swinging/twirling the nunchuku/retracting the weapon for aa nother blow if they miss while a stick can parry with less effort than the flail user having to literally dodge every blow because their weapon isn't exactly ideal for deflecting blows.

    when the nunchuck hits a target it's going to encounter resistance. after the initial impact force has been absorbed the targets resistance force pushes against the nunchuck and the striking end bounces of ending the strike prematurely. with a stick, the rigidity of the construction pushes the resistance force onto your hand, but since your hand is continuously pushing forward you can more easily counter this resisting force and push furth continuing the initial impact into a crushing motion that can go deeper into the targets body. this is why the stick hits with more force. its strike doesn't end prematurely.

    Dang it. I found my way into the Shad nunchuck videos somehow. And once again, I can't get back to work until I vomit my thoughts onto the internet.
    Shad's main point is this: If you were in a Matrix style weapon selection room to prepare for a fight, would you choose the nunchucks over other weapons? I know I wouldn't.
    But there are flaws with his analsis. 1. He has a child-like understanding of force and damage. The ability to knock a target over says nothing about force and damage. You can push over a Century bag with a shove of your arm. You can shove a person without damaging them. Conversely, a bullet can kill someone without knocking them over (they'll drop dead, but the bullet isn't knocking them over). Shad is that guy in the gym getting a big head because he can knock a Century bag over with his pushing punches and kicks or taking advantage of the momentum built in the bag from the strikes.
    There are different types of power and damage. Nunchuks can do penetrating force ("going through the target") but are also used for rebounding force (like most boxing punches, hit the target bounce back into guard). Mr. Wushu Engineer, on his channel, found Chucks and Stick to be equal in damage output when using the same penetrating strike.
    But the biggest omission is asking why nunchucks were invented. What problem were they created to solve. Yes, it's likely some guy thought they would generate more power from the swing and windup (Wushu Engineer proved this does not happen). But, China has alot of whip-like weapons. Why? I think the reason is that in China one-on-one fights don't happen. People often jump into any altercation and gang up on people. Chinese do not enter fights alone, and rarely does a fight stay one-on-one. I think the whip weapons exist to keep opponents at bay when surrounded. Now, I don't do CMA, but when I look at it, it seems alot of Chinese martial arts is created with the idea that you're fighting multiple opponents. If nothing else, being able to do wide, easy swings to keep away a bunch of people is something Nunchucks can do that Stick cannot. And in three videos, Shad never mentioned this.
