In late 1958, Buddy opined that the "Rock & Roll Craze" was only going to last about 6 more months. He had no expectation of doing Rock for the rest of his career, so there's no telling what Buddy would have done. Based on his work in New York in 1958, it's pretty clear that he was heading into symphonic recordings. Waylon Jennings (a major fan and friend of Buddy's) said, "It's not a question of where Music would take Buddy Holly. It's a question of where Buddy Holly would have taken Music." Rock and Rock wouldn’t be the same. The “full band” for the rock sound also came from him. He was so influential for being so young. It’s a shame death took him so early.
All those young women in the background standing absolutely still....obviously under orders. One of the best rock 'n roll songs ever recorded, and at that time new to them. It must have been torture. And this show was called a 'Dance Party'.

shoknifeman2 mikado late but he was playing and the guitar pick fell out of his hand and he had to get on hands and knees in front of the crowd and he cauldron find his guitar pick and contacts were to uncomfortable then so he started whetting his glasses on stage.
Buddy's "Peggy Sue" made it to Okinawa in 1958, where I was on overseas navy shore duty, as a 19 y/o Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class. What an innocent and peaceful time, compared to the last 20 years, even with the Cold War closer to Hot than most people knew. Damn shame to lose Buddy so young.
Man, when you consider all the great songs -- Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Rave on, It's Alright, That'll Be the Day, Peggy Sue Got Married, Everyday and about 15 others -- all written, recorded and released in just 2 years by the age of 22(!!!) it is staggering to think of what he could have accomplished.
I grew up listening to my father's Buddy Holly records. Didn't know Buddy had died before I was even born until I was around 12. I probably cried for a week. Buddy Holly was a musical GENIUS! I'm raising another generation of Buddy Holly fans to carry on the tradition.
Buddy Holly met Elvis Presley during the Louisiana hay ride in 1955. The so-called King of Rock and Roll met the real King of Rock and Roll. Buddy made a tremendous impact that went across the country and to the UK who never heard of this musicivan from Lubbock Texas. You were killed Buddy.. but you still live!
As a teen age farm kid in N.E. Iowa in 1958 I was fortunate enuf to see the CRICKETS (BUDDYHOLLY) at Matters Ballroom in Decorah Iowa............see many greats in those good old days. RAL Donner.....B. Bumble and the Stingers...Tony Orlando....Buddy Knox...Jimmie Bowen. They weren't called concerts then.. ..they were dances...and we all did.I almost fainted when I got to dance with . RAL DONNER. Never forget the bitter cold snowy a.m. in February when Ma woke me up for school and told the terrible news of the plane crash over in CLEAR LAKE. THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED.
Love Buddy Holly's music. Watching this clip makes me remember how miserable I was trying to fit into that stupid mold back then. Weight on you back leg, point your other toe forward, suck in your tummy, hold your shoulders back, put your hands together, now smile!
In 1958 Elvis, the king of Rock & Roll, went to the Army and never came back. Jerry Lee Lewis was banned and blacklisted, Little Richard retired, Chuck Berry was in prison and Buddy Holly died in 1959. What a mess. Buddy was a real genius. Rip.
It's really amazing how they pulled that off with a electric guitar, drums, and a stand up bass.. That's all they had and it sounded great. It's pure talent simple as that.
Did anybody catch Jerry Allison clean and crisp paradiddles? Excellent execution. And he's a co-writer of the song. Let's hear it for song writing drummers!
I have a lot of respect for Kathryn Murray. Back in an era when rock music was shunned, criticized and all too often ignored or joked about, Katheryn gave Buddy a TV spot and asked her (older) audience to have an open mind. For those such as I who lived and personally witnessed the abuse that rock music was taking at the time, I find Katheryn Murray to be a breath of fresh air. She would likely have been criticized in some circles but she had the foresight to stand up to it. Her reward - she now has an audience in 2024 with a much beloved and talented entertainer whom she helped gain popularity. Kudos Kathryn!
+Jedistarship Holly was an innovator ... way ahead of his time, starting with the guitar he chose, a Stratocaster, which many other guitar heroes would adopt in later years.
The influence Buddy Holly would have had on rock and roll cannot even be imagined. So many fantastic tunes is a short time. Like some said earlier, I believe his influence would have been greater than Elvis',
Gosh I love Buddy Holly’s music. It was the prototype for a lot of later rock. Plus it’s just so cool that a guy in glasses could be a rock star in the days of Elvis.
I believe that was Katherine Murray. She and her husband Arthur got people dancing all over the world. They did mostly ballroom style dancing and there were Arthur Murray Dance schools in many cities.
I was 11 when Buddy died. I was just becoming aware of rock n roll thx to my older sister who was then almost 16. I sure remember when Buddy died which I heard it on the radio & got the sense that it was a pretty big deal. Of course, all three of those who died seemed “old” to me then. 😄 Now 2 of my grown sons both have ‘dibs’ on my Buddy Holly vinyl albums, (not to mention my original Elvis & Beatles records). Buddy was an amazingly creative and gifted musician. There’s never been another like him. Huge loss when all three of those young men died.
Anytime I see him live I think that the music would go in another direction if that plane landed well.. He was such a hero, and I'm sure that being such a creative talent he could be the superstar of the 60s. To see, how he aging, how he became wise and experienced while still bright and shiny... This world lacks Buddy Holly.
My father went to Norman Petty studios while Norman's wife was still alive. His favorite musician was Buddy Holly. His pictures he got were great. He also visited Buddy Holly's grave. It has a metal of some type pressed with Buddy's image on it if I remember right. Somberist of photos. The tour played Serb Hall in Milwaukee, Wi in my state before his last place in Clear Lake, Iowa. A lot of musicians death's have wisconsin connections or close times. Like Stevie Ray Vaughn's copter crash after leaving Alpine Valley. Too many young dead. And Eddue Cochran died a year after the day the music died. 58-59 were sad years indeed for r'n'r. Rip.
Ignore the internet tough guys Tyler. I grew up on music from the 50's, 60's and 70's and it's good to hear a younger person recognising the great wealth of good music from earlier decades.
I did too at your age, music isn't meant to only be enjoyed when it was created but for forever and for everyone. You like what you like. I hope it brings you loads of happiness, and comfort.
Buddy Holly was amazing. The guy put out so much great music in just a couple of years. His hits are great but so are many of the other songs on his albums. He wrote most of his songs in a time when that wasn’t at all common and arranged his own music for recordings. He was a visionary who was an idol to the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, who saw him play live just a couple days before he was tragically killed. His music will always live on. He’s the true king of rock.
All through that, Buddy was only stroking DOWN on the Fender. Not UP and down, just DOWN. "Peggy Sue" was originally called "Cindy Lou," a Calypso song that Buddy wrote and performed for his niece, Cindy Lou. Jerry Allison asked Buddy if they could change the title to "Peggy Sue" (Peggy Sue was Jerry's fiancé at the time). Buddy said YES, but only if Jerry could play paradiddles all the way through the song. Jerry did it, played paradiddles, and Buddy changed the song title to Peggy Sue.
what strikes me watching this is the women in the back ground. if you watch them they are moving to the music as wanting to dance to it. you can bet they were told not to move at all. Rock and roll was still taboo to many back then
Elvis and Buddy have their own unique styles. Elvis has the looks, the voice and that wild showmanship that was so unusual in the 50s and that made him King . Buddy is one helluva guitar player and also composes.his own songs.
Aside from the greatness of Holly, the band is sublime. That drummer does more with a on the floor Bass beat and snare than many can't do with double kick and heavy metal kit.
It was a tragedy , for the world of music this guy never saw the 60s, never met the Beatles and Bob Dylan.. That would have been something ..who knows what music could have come out of him
Buddy could've never imagined his approach to songwriting, his band lineup, and energy would set the stage for The Beatles, the music of the 1960s, and Pop Music Future. Our greatest treasures aren't always wrapped in pretty boy looks. Buddy Holly was a musical dynamo!
Abbreviated version. Love that intro. Rock and Roll was considered the rebellious music culture, and most old folks said it wouldn't last; hence Danny and the Juniors', "Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay". This is a great video. Thanks.
I love how stoic and pristine all the girls were standing in the background...even though you KNOW the jungle beat and Buddy were getting to them...raw rock and roll heat
How can over 200 people SELECT a video knowing it features Buddy Holly then give this priceless piece of film the thumbs down? Can only be insane people!
Can you imagine a geeky looking guy like him making it in the music industry today? He might make it on The Voice or American Idol, but no record company would pay him attention, which is sad.
I read that Buddy was hung like a horse, too. I heard Little Richard was so impressed that he used to invite Buddy to fool around with girls in the back seat of his (Richards) car just so he could sneak a peek at Buddy's Texas long horn through the rear-view mirror.
He was like 21 years old here. Incredible. One of the inventors of Rock and Roll. He’d be in his 80s now had he survived. What’s even more incredible is he was 4 years older than Ritchie Valens. Another charter member of the Rock and Roll first graduating class. God Bless them both. 🎵🎸⛪️
Wow..how can all those people in the background not be moving an inch to this?..those were some very rigid times back then.. I could never stand still like that confronted with such a masterful piece of Rock 'n' Roll
+J Mac They all were want to break loose and wanted to but you have to remember that they had never heard this new sound and didn't know what to think of it.
Back then it wasn't proper to do that. You were considered a hooligan if you just busted out and startted dancing. There were certain rules you had to follow.
***** That's just how things were back then. You didn't do certain things. You were supposed to be proper and act a certain way, especially in public. I think some of that should be brought back, the acting proper in public thing at least, and not acting like a damn fool or you just escaped from the Flakey Farm, for the whole world to see and just for the attention.
***** I wasn't talking about dresses and all of that, although some of the clothes women wear should noy be worn. I'm talking about the way people act. Most people used to be more polite especially in public.
***** Again, I'm not talking about that and those weren't polite people with manners, those were sickos, monsters and people who were against all things good. Those were people who wanted to destroy, who did not want to make progress with certain things, were ignorant, were greedy, only cared about themselves, had a one track mind, were close minded and so on. I'm talking about manners and the people who had to be kind to you wherever you went and those were actually kind to everyone no matter what. You're obviously not undertsanding anything I'm saying. I didn't think I would have to explain or have to explain the difference. With the exception of a few races, although there were a lot of times that was passed over, people were willing to help unlike most places that you go to for "help" today that don't help you and or give very little help. The most "help they give today are to those that don't need or deserve it. Certain people get $10,000 a month or more in social security and food stamps because they refuse to lose 900 lbs or (im being nice here and not saying) certain groups of people don't or they say they don't speak english, while I get barely enough to survive on each month and I get told "I'm sorry, but we can't give you anymore help then that". Because that's what a certain "running group" tells me I'm worth, because of what I look like and according to them I have no ailments or illness even though I suffer from depression and severe chronic anxiety. add and adhd, which are illnesses, as well as a bad back, several herniated discs in my spine and my spine is now slowly deteriorating, I also have to take super strong pain medication, anxiety medication and other medication for the add and adhd, which all of keeps me from working and going out in public for the most part, but according to them, when I was first just diagnosed with the spine, back, depression and anxiety, they said none of that should prevent me from working. Even though some is being done for me now and years ago they couldn't have done much for me, but still, I don't get enough money and my Dr get s questioned why I need all of that medicine. Hello, I have ailments. Sorry for going on, but I was trying to make a point.

Yes, that is Jerry Allison on drums. Buddy and the Crickets also released a song Jerry sang on called "Real Wild Child" in late '58 and I believe it's on RUclips. Check it out!
The original bass player on 'That'll Be the Day' is Larry Welborn who lives in Oklahoma to this day. After that first record went out - then they moved the group to another of the same companies labels and the rest is history. Buddy Hollies First group is Buddy Bob and Larry. Bob Montgomery [ his son is playing now his name is Kevin ] and Larry Welborn.
Yes they are. My grandpa, Delbert Juhl, is still alive and they have told me some stories about it. My grandma said she heard a plane flying low overhead when she was tending to my mom, who was very young, in the middle of the night. They said at one point they had Buddy Holly's glasses and watch, and also a gun from the plane, but they gave these items to the sheriff. They also have more gruesome stories of finding bones in their field and the dog dragging up body parts after the crash.
Buddy was the real deal. His music was raw. There's even hints of punk 20 years before it's birth. Long live rock.
He and Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran set the bar for groups to come, sadly taken away too early. Peace
Joe Strummer play guitar the same way. :-)
Down picking. He only lived to 22. Imagine.
This man, Buddy wrote so many of his own songs. “Peggy Sue” was written by his drummer. Needed that snare roll.
Imagine that this kid is from rural Texas creating music and image like that.

They went to the show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake??!!! OMG I bet your parents have/had incredible stories and memories from that show.
beautiful man, first hot geek
He had no choice, his eyesight was so weak that he tried to play without his glasses and nearly fell off the stage.
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 - that made me laugh harder than it should've.
R.I.P - Buddy Holly
shoknifeman2 mikado late but he was playing and the guitar pick fell out of his hand and he had to get on hands and knees in front of the crowd and he cauldron find his guitar pick and contacts were to uncomfortable then so he started whetting his glasses on stage.
1:32 jerry kinda look pissed tho 😂😂😂😂
Yes
Buddy's "Peggy Sue" made it to Okinawa in 1958, where I was on overseas
navy shore duty, as a 19 y/o Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class. What an
innocent and peaceful time, compared to the last 20 years, even with the Cold
War closer to Hot than most people knew. Damn shame to lose Buddy so young.
If Buddy Holly lived longer i honestly feel like he would've been more famous than elvis.
I agree. He was a genius.
Elvis music was boring!! Buddy has the real talent
Ridiculous
I Agree
I grew up listening to my father's Buddy Holly records. Didn't know Buddy had died before I was even born until I was around 12. I probably cried for a week. Buddy Holly was a musical GENIUS! I'm raising another generation of Buddy Holly fans to carry on the tradition.
THANK YOU for not ruining this amazing gem by dubbing the studio audio over this amazing live performance!! It's perfect just the way it is!!
Uh, it wasn't live. Look again... his guitar isn't even plugged in. And they slightly miss the ending beat. It's a pretty good lip syncing act though.
I was born right at the end of '53 and this and Blue Suede Shoes were the first songs that sank in. What an era.
RIP Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. The music didn't die that day, it'll live on forever.
"Rock n Roll Specialists receive polite applause......"
Of course they had no way of knowing they were in the presence of RR Royalty.
Buddy Holly was the greatest of them all. He changed the rock and roll era in the late 1950s.
He didnt change anything. He created it.
Buddy was the best, very sad he died so young and before i was born
In 1958 Elvis, the king of Rock & Roll, went to the Army and never came back. Jerry Lee Lewis was banned and blacklisted, Little Richard retired, Chuck Berry was in prison and Buddy Holly died in 1959. What a mess. Buddy was a real genius. Rip.
The conditions were set for the arrival of The Beatles to help fill the void you described.
Jim McNair
Well, the Rickeys (and Fabian) came first, then the Folkies, The Beach Boys, then The Beatles.
Good point, well made, about Elvis.
Pepe Ladd I dont understand, elvis died in 1977...
jonny yuma You know why in my opinion. His mom died while he was in the Army...he was never the same once he came back.
It's really amazing how they pulled that off with a electric guitar, drums, and a stand up bass.. That's all they had and it sounded great. It's pure talent simple as that.
It's not a cello, it's a stand up bass.
I thought that was hilarious. He was right about talent
In alot of ways, I wish rockabilly and the stand up bass in particular, never really went away.
***** That's true.
Stand up bace
Not to change Genre but Ive always thought Buddy Holly had an atmosphere of punk rock to him. I think he would have been comfortable there.
+Jedistarship yeah I see it too. If I dare call it,Buddy was the original punk! and that's alright....
+Jedistarship Holly was an innovator ... way ahead of his time, starting with the guitar he chose, a Stratocaster, which many other guitar heroes would adopt in later years.
Jedistarship Watch him play Oh Boy! on the Ed Sullivan show, his punk rock rebel shines in that performance since was so pissed at Sullivan.
Just saw it, and your right. Particularly during the Guitar Solo, it had Punk written all over it!!!
he inspired the Ramones
The influence Buddy Holly would have had on rock and roll cannot even be imagined. So many fantastic tunes is a short time. Like some said earlier, I believe his influence would have been greater than Elvis',
Gosh I love Buddy Holly’s music. It was the prototype for a lot of later rock. Plus it’s just so cool that a guy in glasses could be a rock star in the days of Elvis.
I'm in awe by your well formulated, unbiased opinion. More power to you.
RIP Buddy , now I know why I cried when I watched this earlier.
Just love how buddy looks at his guitar on his solo part you can just see all the talent that man had at that time wow
Love this clip rip Buddy you remain a bedrock of modern culture and thou for such a short time on earth you have truly enriched so many of our lives
The lady at the beginning reminds me of the principal in Grease.
Max Power i was thinking the same thing
She's adorable, and a kind, openminded lady. She was a lot nicer to them that Ed Sullivan was.
I believe that was Katherine Murray. She and her husband Arthur got people dancing all over the world. They did mostly ballroom style dancing and there were Arthur Murray Dance schools in many cities.
“Rock and roll specialists”-I like that phrase.
I was 11 when Buddy died. I was just becoming aware of rock n roll thx to my older sister who was then almost 16. I sure remember when Buddy died which I heard it on the radio & got the sense that it was a pretty big deal. Of course, all three of those who died seemed “old” to me then. 😄
Now 2 of my grown sons both have ‘dibs’ on my Buddy Holly vinyl albums, (not to mention my original Elvis & Beatles records).
Can you imagine what the strat he is playing would be worth today?
Rip.
Eric Clapton's Blackie sold for just under a million. Don't forget his 50's Fender tube amp. It would be worth a bundle too.
It's hard to imagine a time when this was considered provocative...
What a sweet intro by Kathryn Murray!
A first class lady and a first class band!
im 13 and I like music from the 50s 60s 70s 80s and 90s
Good for you
punkrockstuff lol right its like you want a cookie?
Bryce Beltran i dont want anything why does everyone say i want something
Ignore the internet tough guys Tyler. I grew up on music from the 50's, 60's and 70's and it's good to hear a younger person recognising the great wealth of good music from earlier decades.
I did too at your age, music isn't meant to only be enjoyed when it was created but for forever and for everyone. You like what you like. I hope it brings you loads of happiness, and comfort.
Just noticed how odd Buddy's fingering for the A chord was. Interesting.
Oh yeah! Have noticed it myself. Will recommend this alternative to those who struggle with the "official" way of doing an A!
@@caressofstars4239 We all play A differently. I use what maybe 3 shapes given my mood, the previous and next chord etc.
Forget Elvis, the king is Buddy Holly
That's very nice we have this original live video with Buddy and the band in fine costumes performing 'Peggy Sue'...! 🕵🏼♀️🎶🧡🎶😃👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Rock and roll specialists dressed so proper back then!
The Rock N Roll specialists
Nice story :}
what strikes me watching this is the women in the back ground. if you watch them they are moving to the music as wanting to dance to it. you can bet they were told not to move at all. Rock and roll was still taboo to many back then
Sid Vicious Your comment is something else.
Sid Vicious And I did it my way 8-)
Elvis and Buddy have their own unique styles. Elvis has the looks, the voice and that wild showmanship that was so unusual in the 50s and that made him King . Buddy is one helluva guitar player and also composes.his own songs.
He’s 20 years old in this video, pretty nuts when you think about how young he actually was.
That's some pretty fierce strumming.
are there people who loves this drumbeat on this song
?
I think that famous song drum wipe-out stole from this song
Aside from the greatness of Holly, the band is sublime. That drummer does more with a on the floor Bass beat and snare than many can't do with double kick and heavy metal kit.
It was a tragedy , for the world of music this guy never saw the 60s, never met the Beatles and Bob Dylan.. That would have been something ..who knows what music could have come out of him
Wonderful introduction! Where did such classy respect go?
Buddy could've never imagined his approach to songwriting, his band lineup, and energy would set the stage for The Beatles, the music of the 1960s, and Pop Music Future. Our greatest treasures aren't always wrapped in pretty boy looks. Buddy Holly was a musical dynamo!
Rock n Roll specialists said the nice Lady...and she was right.
Damn, if I was there, they would probably put me in a mental hospital for so much screaming and crying, and hanging onto a certain someone's leg.....
😂😂😂😂
Abbreviated version. Love that intro. Rock and Roll was considered the rebellious music culture, and most old folks said it wouldn't last; hence Danny and the Juniors', "Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay". This is a great video. Thanks.
I love how stoic and pristine all the girls were standing in the background...even though you KNOW the jungle beat and Buddy were getting to them...raw rock and roll heat
LEGENDARY, RIP Buddy Holly!!! Your music lives on in 2020!!!
How can over 200 people SELECT a video knowing it features Buddy Holly then give this priceless piece of film the thumbs down?
Can only be insane people!
Some people live to vote no.
Maybe they don't like lip syncing?
Can you imagine a geeky looking guy like him making it in the music industry today? He might make it on The Voice or American Idol, but no record company would pay him attention, which is sad.
+Xander Taylor Elvis Costello?
I think you're wrong, sorry.
Musicians today don't dress the same.
were's lot's of geeky singers in indie rock these days..
My favorite part is his face expression right before he started singing. It's the expression you give when you're going all in.
"Rock and roll specialists." I love it!
One of the most influential songs ever .. imagine young John Lennon or Keith Richards playing the grooves out of their copies.
i went to college at texas tech in lubbock, texas...birthplace of buddy. they have a huge statue of him downtown and the buddy holly art museum has a giant pair of black rim glasses in front of it. i like to think he would have been bigger then elvis had he lived.
Good afternoon my friends
I was born in 1955 to
Buddy thanks for the music 🎶 to
RIP Buddy
Today's music 🎶 is like garbage to
Am still listening to this music in august of 2024 to ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
The more time passes, the better this sounds. We love you Buddy Holley!
She's wonderful the way she asks her audience to give these young fellows a chance. She refers to them as "rock 'n roll specialists"
Katherine is so sweet
Buddy Holly lives!
So sad to think that Buddy only had just over a year left to live after this.
This made me cry.....not sure why, guess cuz he's so frickin innocent, amazing and transcendent. I don't think I'll ever forget seeing this for the first time. Thank y
Buddy Holly, a true genius. What a fascinating performance.
Love this song R.I.P Buddy Holly
THE drummer was fantastic not sure maybe JERRY ALLISON?
Yes, that is Jerry Allison on drums. Buddy and the Crickets also released a song Jerry sang on called "Real Wild Child" in late '58 and I believe it's on RUclips. Check it out!
THE AUDIENCE LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE IN SHOCK NO EMOTIONS AT ALL THANKS BUDDY HOLLY ❤
If you have the gift of music nothing else matters--the gift speaks for itself.
I think it's funny that he proposed to his wife a few minutes into their first date. He had just met her too
Jerry Alyson such a great loose drummer,
I prefer the 50's over the 60's anyday of the week.
