@Tessmage Tessera Don't know if this is just Hollywood BS, but in the movie the song was originally "Cindy Lou" and the drummer's gf was named Peggy Sue. Drummer pestered Holly to rename the song to impress his gf and Holly responded by offering a deal: You get the paradiddles right and I'll rename the song. So in that version it would seem that the drummer needed practice and Holly had to motivate him.

I automatically think punk rock two decades ahead of its time when I see and hear him, even though that characterization is very limiting. Even with that look he has the whole confidence and attitude down; stripped down to the core of what rock is all about. I've been to Lubbock; it's a desolate, hardscrabble place where dust chokes your lungs and you can see how a man can come out of there with the fury to conquer the world. Without being stupid, this is so raw and stripped back that despite the lyrics punk owes more to this than a lot of what fell between.

For many years, it was believed no Holly/crickets video had survived. We are lucky to have the 2 Sullivan shows and the Arthur Murray. This clip is very good, do look for the hi res black and white upload as well. very sharp. It's great that Buddy's
guitar is miked up, but the camera goes to Niki during the solo, even though he is not even plugged in!

Jerry Allison is the drummer. He co-wrote this and "That'll Be the Day" with Buddy. He's still alive today (82 as of August 31, 2021). Peggy Sue was his girlfriend (later wife who he was later married to until she died in 2018).
Yes, the recording and this performance shows that very little cymbal work was involved on this song. He adjusted the sound for either Crickets songs (more forceful drumming) or Buddy Holly solo songs (hand claps, just brushed cymbals, even hitting a cardboard box to soften the percussion for the more yearning songs of this type).

@@number1cabdriveriniowacity736 It's because he's playing paradiddles RLRR LRLL whereas most rock drummers, unless they'd learnt the rudiments, would stick to single strokes RLRLRLRL etc. , but paradiddles gives it a distinct, subtler feel.

"Quantum Leap" hit TV show for 4 years, starting 1989.
Multi-genius hero is an accidental time traveler "fixing what went wrong". When its fixed, he leaps to another time and space, another something that's gone "wrong".
At the end of very first episode, the hero, Sam, turns to young man playing guitar ...
Throughout the episode a minor character was trying out different lyrics and chords on his guitar.
He's singing "Piggy Sue" to a pig at the end.
Sam turns to him "Buddy, try 'Peggy Sue'."
      And he leaps.

His story is the textbook example of "what could've been". How important was he? He changed the musical paradigm of how bands looked and operated, and it's no more evident than with the British Invasion. So many bands cite Buddy as their inspiration, and probably brought the Stratocaster to prominence. Absolute legend.
