A mask can be like a façade or an optical illusion that looks flawless at a certain angle but on a different angle or perspective, it looks different and the illusion breaks down. Essentially, the mask implies something that doesn’t really exist. Instead behind the mask is a hidden inner experience. The distinction between the person and the mask is it is what is underneath that is the most important thing and this experience needs to be validated.

👋Welcome to Autism From The Inside!!!
If you're autistic or think you or someone you love might be on the autism spectrum, this channel is for you!
I'm Paul Micallef, and I discovered my own autism at age 30.
Yes, I know, I don't look autistic. That's exactly why I started this channel in the first place because if I didn't show you, you would never know.
Autism affects many (if not all!) aspects of our lives, so on this channel, I want to show you what Autism looks like in real people and give you some insight into what's happening for us on the inside. We'll break down myths and misconceptions, discuss how to embrace autism and live well, and share what it's like to be an autistic person.
Join me as I share what I've found along my journey, so you don't have to learn it the hard way.
Make sure to subscribe so you won’t miss my new video every Friday and some bonus content thrown in mid-week too.

I'm one of the few females on the spectrum I know that didn't mask much. I officially found out in my late 20s, after persuasion of a male autistic friend to get checked out. When I told people about a diagnosis I had a lot of people respond that they weren't surprised! Though, some older family members didn't believe me because they said there's nothing wrong with me (they were thinking one has to be like Rainman or something) instead, I am just a picky eater and eccentric. 😅

I’m slowly trying to unmask and be myself. But I realize that my true self isn’t this overly excitable person which was the reason for my masking. Excitability is socially acceptable compared to not caring about things I really don’t care about or having a resting face.

It is a part of me i cultivated out if the things I admired in the world and wanted to be and used those to learn how to express myself in the way I wanted to express myself. It just isn't the full picture per saw. But I many ppl behave differently out in the world then they do in privacy or with friends so I personally don't see that as a difference in myself. It just takes me alot of energy and sometimes I odnt feel like I want to put it on because it's u planed or whatever, but it is me and accept it as part of me. And I'm going to love it the same as I love me and be less hard on myself. And if others question me. It isn't any different thna being questioned about anything else I've ever done or been in my life. It's only hurtful when those close to u tell u its an excuse and don't support u. But that's on them in the end. Their lives must be their own kind of bad to be that kind of negative nasty person.

I’m right where you are speaking about being, that high-functioning/high-masking yet-to-be-diagnosed adult woman who always knew there was something off. Is it common to lose yourself (feel like you don’t know who you are) if you go undiagnosed and don’t realize how masked up you’ve been for 36 years? My mother had a mental health stigma that kept her from pursuing consistant care for my ADHD when I was young. ADHD showed itself in the 1st grade, my teacher spoke to my mother in a conference and recommended testing. Yup, ADHD. My Mom didn’t want me on medication because she wasn’t convinced (stigma) and had her own resistance to treating her own mental illness with medication. She’s a skeptic that only really sees “autism” as non-verbal and low-functioning. So I never was able to pursue my questions, or voice them really. I’m a chatterbox, and even though it took me a while to be able to read people slightly, I still can’t tell if I am making people uncomfortable. I am highly self conscious, highly self-corrective, and my mental script is always on and thinking. I’m an extrovert, but over the years I’ve closeted myself because my self confidence has been effected by others perception (or what I think they perceive). I have a very high-speed brain and tend to notice details about things that others don’t. I’m a “funny” blend, not “haha”, but different in my opinion… I have never known another adult female with AuDHD to compare experiences, so I have spent years wondering why I am how I am. Thank you for your videos, thank you for providing a place for education, I always appreciate your insight! I’m on my journey of self discovery, and you’ve helped me so very much in that process!

Oh my goodness! I was just thinking about this. After being a leader in business & my church for years, I was diagnosed with ADHD (originally self diagnosed) 2 months ago & ASD last Wednesday. It’s like the final puzzle piece has been given to me. I’ve been a bit angry, that no one has ever picked this up before, but as you say, we mask. I’ve always felt different & always said I’m a chameleon. Now I know why. I was thinking about how at times I’ve been quite the sophisticate & others, that I am clumsy & goofy.
So so so relieved to find out what’s been going on my whole life.

also, being diagnosed young doesn't mean masking doesn't happen. i was a lucky afab in the sense that i got both my adhd and autism diagnosis (technically i was diagnosed with asperger's but i reject that term personally) as a child, but i think my parents still tried to treat me NT and so i am at 36 still learning to unmask

Because I feel like I have Autism but I am very good with telling people's emotions and feelings due to tones of voices and facial expressions, but I'm able to do this because I hyper focus on it and because of anxiety, trauma, etc.

Many people mask habitually in their adulthood. I don’t know how not to mask even when I’m exhausted from doing so. At those times I can become reclusive. It’s very much a people exhaust me so I’m gonna need to be by myself to recharge situation. Been like that since I was a toddler but now the difference is I have vocab and communication tools to advocate for myself.

Who is to determine what is my true self? You? The so-called “autistic community”? Or, perhaps, healthcare professionals who do the diagnosing? No! None of those. I’m the one to decide what to consider my true self. And if I don’t like particular behavioral patterns I happen to have (including those that would qualify as symptoms of neurodiversity) and am making a tremendous effort to rid myself of them, no one - I repeat, no one - had a right to impose that on me as my “true self”. That’s why I have no interest in being diagnosed. Because my true self has nothing to do with whatever weird habits I might have for whatever reason.

I never knew all my problems in life were actually autism, I bullied it out of myself and my dream in life was to become rich and get my own house and to not have to deal with society and finally take a breath of not wanting to wear fucking socks, it's not what the problems are it's the emotional disturbance about such small things and noo emotion towards most important issues of life, like I changed jobs because of having to wear socks but never understand why people think about marriage or kids and because I don't feel anything for it, I never went out for it. I am very good at studies and controlling myself, infact I freak out if routines are disturbed, but I can't spell things and that's why school wss horrible but I was excellent in college, I can't learn things unless I teach them to myself soo any kind of cources freak me out, but I get a book and read it in one seating and I teach myself those things in snap of a finger

what you described has a chance to overlap with the common diagnosis of Asperger. But still i am not a doctor. And even if i believe that self-analysis is super valid, male sure to let doctors make final diagnosis. You can make researches, talk to people, but if possible have a talk with a specialist for better and valid answers. I know it is expensive and also a privilege in many situations. But a diagnosis isn’t a finish goal. It is a starting point. :) - just wondering: do you have memories of you as a kid? Can you recall any of the specifics you mentioned from your childhood?

@@renflowergrapx Yes, I remember at 6 years old. I have no sense of danger or never understood danger. I used to put my hands on hot irons, stoves, electrical sockets. I did a lot of animal cruelty. I also put my brother in the hospital on purpose. I couldn’t feel anything and I was around 14. Also my mother noticed and told me I need to work on my emotions maybe by a book because I seem to rub people the wrong way or I need to be more polite to people. I don’t know like I said something feels off when I am around people.

@@Koba18013 All right, thank you for sharing. I don't want you to be this specific online, unless you feel comfortable to. i'd love to give you answers, but i'm not in the position to do so. What you describe can fit different situations and conditions. I'd recommend to take note of ALL the traits you believe belong to it and most of all a list of all the traits you believe cannot be part of it. Confronting a specialist it might be usefull to have a clear view of all the aspects you want to discuss of. For me it has been crucial.

Anyone else find it really difficult to mask as a female? So I'm not autistic diagnosed, but it's likely I have it (I am OCD diagnosed however). I can keep a mask on for awhile because my ability to provide first impressions is really good, but getting to know me is.....different. The mask essentially falls off on its own the more I talk to people, because I have a problem with oversharing and revealing that I'm not exactly "proficient" at work for example. Gotten disparaging comments about my age, my learning ability, my ability to deal with anxiety, it's pretty horrible. I envy autistic women who can mask fairly easily.

I'm a identical mirror twin I'm a female andy twin sister and I are both 22 and autistic. We mask being autistic in public really well. At home not so much. Most of my coworkers don't know that I'm autistic. Just today I was in a store and I was looking for fidget toys and I asked a worker and she showed me. I didn't think I needed to say anything about myself being autistic. Not only was my friend there helping me look and she's autistic as well. Anyway the employee said normally teachers with autistic kids or parents of autistic kids come in here to get fidget toys not normal people and I snapped back well both my friend and I are autistic and she said oh sorry and shut up and walked away. I thought her comments kinda rude. Proves point that I'm good at masking and that you sometimes can't tell that people have a disability. So don't just say it's for this group of people bc you don't know them and they could have a disability or they could be getting it for someone who has a disability.
