Context on the lyrics: James Hetfield has been struggling with alcoholism almost all his fucking life, he even went to rehab about 2-3 years ago. He has been facing those demons for a long time and he has been able to channel that shit by writing music like this song instead of doing something stupid. Temptation is always there for him, like it happened years ago...
Not sure if it was confirmed he went to actual rehab, at least not like he did 20 + years ago. I think it was more of a checking in to sort out a few things. Rehab never ends, its an ongoing process for the rest of life.
I’m a older guy 51 and I have seen tons of metal bands over the years and no one puts on a show like Metallica. In August I’m going once again but this time I’ve got terminal cancer. I find myself lost listening to there music and will be something I do Until I leave this earth. Looking forward to your concert experience video. 🤘🏼
I'm gonna say it again - when Metallica comes to a town near you, you need to be there. This journey is not complete until you see these guys LIVE. Loved your reaction to this song. It was a joy to watch you banging those young metal heads. Made me smile, made me laugh -- you made my day !
Got my “No repeat weekend” tickets to the St Louis show! Seeing Pantera with them on Friday and 5Finger Death Punch with them on Sunday. 15 different songs each night! (30 Metallica songs!) I can’t WAIT! Seeing them 31 years after the 1st time I saw them with Guns N Roses in 1992🤘😆
They are so good live even to this day! First time I saw them was in 1986 and the last time I saw them was in 2018(other than the drive in concert I went to) and I have to say they’ve only gotten better live and that’s something after all these years. They make sure we get a good show every time!
So, this 65 year old lady is thrilled to see your reaction to this head banger (not my normal cup of tea to be sure) as I've always been a Motown baby myself but found myself loving this brilliant banger of a song.
The album title “72 seasons” is meant to represent the first 18 years of one’s life and how it forms you. This is the third song released so far. Album release in April and I can’t wait! Love my Metallica!
James has struggled with drugs and alcohol most of his life. He's been sober now for a few years. His mom died from cancer and then his friend Cliff Burton (Original Bassists) died in a horrific accident while they were on the road. I am glad he has an outlet for his disease. Praying for you man. Keep on rocking !!!
Brandon saying "Sometimes I think I know and then I'll be dead wrong" is such a positive growth moment :) and one small victory in the war against ignorance.
Can we appreciate the fact that metllica are now in their 60s, Lars is using more double bass than ever, James voice is as strong as it's ever been, I mean, these guys are just incredible, to be at this Point in their career and still have the stamina to play this kind of music
James grew up in a family of Christian science. If someone had a broken leg, they wouldn't go to a doctor, they would pray for it to heal. Then he watched his mother die of cancer. All this had him question his faith. Many of his lyrics are about this. He also writes his lyrics so they are open to interpretation. They can have different meanings to everyone. I think he's a lyrical genius.
Cannot stand most organized religions. If not for the JW cult, Prince might be alive today. He didn’t believe In blood transfusions so he refused hip surgery which led to pain pill addiction. I had a hip replacement in October and it was the best birthday gift ever! I can walk and work better than I have in years ! No meds, no cane, no walker, no creams, only the occasional heating pad 😂
Even after so many years of writing James still comes up with the best lyrics! Genius! Unfortunately they come some bad shit that he’s been through. He shares his feelings with us in a way that we can all relate his words to our own life. It’s just genius. He always tells the audience that we are not alone in our feelings to always ask for help- that usually right before they play fade to black.
Sounds to me like they're getting back to their roots. So reminiscent of their earlier work. Blasting out the drums, super crunchy guitars...just amazing 👏 Thanks for sharing this one!
Boys, they are releasing all the music videos in one shot as the biggest album listening party, which is through a one-night right before the album release date, it will be in the cinemas worldwide (that's April 13th, and damn I sound like a promoter lol) Outside of reactions, I think you guys should all experience this, would be cool to be part of that imo.
Now imagine they are your grandparents age ! Metallica forever ! I took my 12 yo son to Italy all the way from the UK 🇬🇧 to see their concert.he said it was his best day of his life my fav memory. Then we went to se them in Dublin thsie were the days
Hey guys, diehard Metalhead here. I love your open mindedness and reactions. I heard this brand new Metallica song the other day and it totally resonated in me. Not sure if James has ever been so open about his inner demons. I have them too. Maybe the Unforgiven songs come close. Musically, it is a 100% banger! The honest spiritual aspect and heaviness of this song digs deep into my soul! Keep exploring my friends!
This sounds like another song that our war fighters will be blasting wherever they're sent next. Metallica has been on the front lines for a couple generations now.
Fellas… here’s my meaning of this James grew up in a very religious home, his parents were very controlling and also never really allowed him to be his own in his thoughts and curiosities. When he finally was able to break free, he struggled with alcohol and addiction and figuring things out. The world full of temptations that he could not resist, even to this day as an adult he still struggles with alcohol and temptations. #BANGER 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Hi 👋 new subscriber here. I saw Metallica 31 years ago and will be going to see them this November in St. Louis. ❤ I love your reactions and commentary 😀
You guys are awesome. I dig hearing you guys banter on your reactions. This song is a banger. Metallica hadn’t had this good of a reception on a song since 3 Leaf Clover or maybe even Enter Sandman…just a great tune. A great reaction too fellas.
Man, I love you guys. Totally keep your minds open, and keep it real with honest commentary and discussion...and you're not afraid to like what you like and proclaim it to the world. God bless you. You are what I would like to now call "Awoken" (as opposed to "Woke"). As for the song...remember that James has struggled with sobriety for years, and while the song itself is written so that it can apply to multiple circumstances (as so many of their songs have), look at it specifically in the context of his struggle with sobriety and addiction. That may flesh its meaning out for you a little more. Bravo Zulu. Keep doing what you do!
Hey Guys, I live in Germany and I love it to see your reactions when you hear Heavy Metal 🤘 You must see Metallica Live... The Metallica Family is one of the Greatest ❤️🤘 I wish you all the best and God Bless you
I'd LOVE for you guys to meet Metallica and document it for a video. Hoping someone in their circle sees all your reaction videos and can make it happen 🙏🏽🔥💪🏽
Two nights in November at Ford Field for this rocker!!!! Can’t wait!!! You guys should go to the show if they come to your city or close by. HOFers don’t come around very often anymore. Take this opportunity to see them. A night you can tell your grandkids about!!🤘🤘🤘
I wouldn't be too concerned about the criticism of how quickly you get to suggested videos; it just shows that people are enthusiastic about what you're doing. Ditto on the comments about teaching your audience as much as we're expanding your horizons. I have learned so much in a short period of time about a number of musical genres (rap, heavy metal). You five are definitely Renaissance men and it gives me hope for the future. Rock on. Suggestions: "Radar Love" by Golden Earring "Whammer Jammer" by J. Geils Band "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter (studio version)

James has fought alcohol and pain killer addiction his whole adult life. Temptation is always there and sometime you go backwards instead of forwards. He has been in extended rehab at least 2 times, including a year or so ago, but otherwise thankfully been sober.
The darkness is the feeling of always going back into the addiction. Holy water to cleanse the soul and love religion and the faith but the thoughts are always in your mind, hence Temptation over and over.
The song about his mother was "The God That Failed". His parents did not believe in doctors or health care at all. They thought prayers would cure everything. James watched his mother die of cancer because of that, hence "The God That Failed".
