Great interview with prob my all time favourite player. Met him as a kid at the training ground the day after Ron Saunders resigned. Ron Saunders had said I could come down and meet the players so a bit of chaos that morning. They told me I could sit where the players were having breakfast and reading the paper pre training. After going round the room asking for autographs, walked out and bumped into Tony Morley getting out of his car (sure it was a capri!) with a sandwich in his hand. Asked for an autograph, he said sure and could I hold his sandwich while he signed. Probably my proudest moment!
Tony comes across as a regular guy who recognises he was given an incredible talent, made the absolute most of it and remains humble regards his achievements. The definition of a legend.
Pete I love this interview series. You really make it feel like you’re having a chat at the pub (which you are!) reminiscing with old friends. Thank you for preserving these stories with our legends.
This is what I feel is the most definitive Tony Morley interview to be found. Villa supporters of all ages need to watch this to understand Villa's greatness EVER a little bit better!!!
I was the “guy” who chatted to Tony for 30 mins or so at ChaseTown FC, as Tony’s Son - Joe, was in their squad 23/24. A genuinely great bloke. Nice to meet one of my heroes. 👍💜💙
Another fantastic video Pete. Tony was one of many great characters in that team and it’s so good to hear his stories straight from the horses mouth. Great player too and an intricate part of our success in that era. Loved every minute of this.
My hero and met him many times since 84 and have many pics with him, my friend used to rent his house in the 80’s in Sutton and I couldn’t believe it when I was up stairs and his shirts and kits were still in the cupboard. My nephew was at hednesford with his son Joe for many years and a good player as well. Tony used to do football schools around the area as well, LEGEND 💙💜
Listening to Tony brings it all into perspective. How times have changed in regards to star players lifestyles nowadays. A different world. Thanks for the video post 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. Most engaging. Somehow my imagination can't stretch far enough to see any CURRENT player speaking this eloquently when their footballing careers come to a natural close. What will their memories be? I doubt that the content will extend beyond the clubs they played at, what cars they drove and a video of a couple of flash houses they own. Tony Morley's story is romantic, inspiring, interesting and deep. Haven't times changed, big time. Thanks Peter.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
after "Sid" - tony was my hero .. as a child (10yrs +) many little chats after many a game .. not gonna lie - this has brought me to tears .. the legend status is banded around too much these days .. but this GUY !! - will always go down in VILLA history for "that ASSIST" .. #VTID -"It Must Be" .. - thank you Tony !! 52 yr old AVFC Fan , Cannock !!
Unbelievable show Pete, thank you for doing such a video as Tony is a gentleman, and what a player...sharing stories of when men played football for the love of the game and yes they got paid but not like these china dolls get paid today. P.s. i had a great time meeting Tony, Gary Shaw, and Peter Withe at Villa Park last year with you......once in a lifetime opportunity for a life long Villa lover from Canada. UP THE MIGHTY VILLA!!!!!
Brilliant interview Pete 👏 Remember when Tony had the Capri, think it was orange. Was fortunate to be at the semi final versus Anderlecht and always wondered who he was having a go at after scoring 😂
My WHOLE family is and was Villa barmy. No choice you was drilled UTV from birth. Aged 7 My first game was villa v Ipswich 1981 we lost, but my dad taking me In the holte, with the AV floodlights. Is a day that was just like Tony said his first game at Everton was. Tony Morley and Gary Shaw i Idolised as a kid wanted to be Tony when I played in the street and even when i played when got older I wanted to be a winger but ended up LB or LM. End of day loved this and what this man Don for me My family and my team. Thank you Tony VTWD
Loving this! Twenty minutes in and goosebumps as you show Andy Lochhead's goal against Bournemouth, the match where I dropped my WW2 claxon and the Youth Cup game. Was there for that too. What a team! OK - onwards!!!
Yes I was there 48110 for a 3rd division game Geoff vowden very un rated player got the other goal whatta game best goal ever Ted Mac dougal flying header unreal
Fantastic interview Pete. What a character Tony is, met him a few times and love listening I his stood, he’s hilarious. Thrilled that you got to do this 👌🏻
Little, Shaw Morley, walters my favorite Villa players he was one of our best ever wingers with a touch of swagger..great interview interesting inside info 💯💯
Pete, when you talk to a Scouser, ask them to write down what they’ve said, Tony actually said the Cork and Bottle pub, not the Cock N Bull. It was lost in his accent. My wife and I used to go to this pub regular during the 80s and often saw Villa players in there, the pub is on Boldmere Road in Sutton Coldfield, it’s now called the Boldmere Tap.
Tony Morley, my favourite ever Villa player. Finally met him a couple of years ago down the Villa. Such a top fella. They say never meet your heroes. If that’s the case Tony is the exception. UTV.
It's interesting to me, probably of no interest to anyone else when he talked about how the English game went long ball in the early 80s. I was born in 79, I remember the 86 world cup, just about, and I remember late 80's first division football. But it was about 1990 when I was 10 that I really started to watch the game and understand the tactics on any level. It coincided with the birth of the Premier League. It was probably about 1990 when the long ball game started to die. Alex Ferguson was playing with pacey wingers and Man U kept the ball on the grass. Big Ron came in and had us playing the ball on the grass, after Graham Taylor had his success with us playing direct balls into the channels. That's when 'long ball' became a dirty word. I remember the 'boring boring Arsenal' chants under George Graham. Arsenal were a boring long ball team before Wenger. The English game in the 60's and 70's was very good but it lost it's way in the 80s. It got complacent, and the European ban didn't help. Fast forward to today and England produce good technical players, but the coaching is just so far behind the elite level still, even now. Anyway, I've got 4 boring paragraphs out of that one little sentence of the interview. If you've made it to the end, thank you. UTV
That was great fun, laced with some nice little football stories. Tony Morley, what a top bloke, so much humour and such a big heart. He was terrific in those few seasons. I have never seen anyone who could run with the ball at that pace. There were times when he ran the length of the field, and no one could get near him. Thanks Pete, great interview, best yet!
I remember Tony Morley, I knew his grandad pigeon racing he lived down Clucas gardens.I remember the capri he was a ladies man. He knew Tommy Gorman , Terry Connor and Mikey Dowling
He is hilarious. Met him so many times. One time I was minding my own business in 82. He came up to me and said “I saw you yesterday. Yeah. In the inbetweeners” and walked off. Ruined me out the blue and bowled off. 😂
Enjoyed that. Remember those days better than I remember last week. Great to see Villa back to being an exciting footballing side again… lots of similarities to a Ron Saunders side to be fair. Thanks Pete and Tony.
The in 82 i started high school aged 11..imagine your school colours are claret , blue and white ..I didn't get the villa strip like some of the rich kids even if they supported Liverpool. I had a version of the 70s kit but as far as I was concerned it was Villa 😂😂😂
Re Doug ellis andTonys comment all villa fans who lived through late 70s - 2016 must agree with Tony, we could of had great success but lacked ambition. Because of Ellis simple.
Young lads coming through it's a about stardom n money. Tons end up playing back at parks pitches then they have get a job clubs need do more life skills.
Was there in Rotterdam, age 18, i was at Highbury when we clinched the league. I was even behind the goal at Goodison when Tony scored the goal of the season with my late Dad. I was blessed to watch that team, i loved the one touch and the ability to break so quickly with pace. Up the mighty Villa Pete.
Fantastic chat Pete with the legend that is Tony Morley... I knew Tony quite well when he lodged in my parents road when he first joined Villa, he had his orange Capri and we got friendly even going to the Belfry nightclub together. He recently got wind of me being in hospital just over a year ago and phoned me in the hospital to cheer me up.... shame he never finished the Miss Iceland story 😂😂

My all time favourite. So often produced something brilliant when we were under the cosh. I love Tony Morley.

I was born in Sutton, haven’t been home in four or so years, this makes me ache!
The northern soul clubs in Birmingham in the late 70s and early 80s was the locarno, the barrel organ and the outrigger,
Lovely Pete 👍
Tony Morley was a legend UTV 👍

Enjoyed that. Remember those days better than I remember last week. Great to see Villa back to being an exciting footballing side again… lots of similarities to a Ron Saunders side to be fair. Thanks Pete and Tony.
fantastic👍⚽⚽⚽
Bayern must still be wondering how they lost that final. Every time Rummenigge got the ball it was panic stations. Still, got the Jug.
1 reason NIGEL SPINK
BY any measure Tony Morley was a top player..would have had a field day into todays game.
All Chelmsley lads can Dance 🕺 👌 👏😁
Fined £200 for a couple of V for Villa signs to Ron! LOL.

Is there an out-takes reel?

Who breaks up a European cup winning team because of his ego… Villa could have been dominant for yrs
The Cork and Bottle was in Boldmere (not the cock and bull) :-D

I've met Tony Morley (in the white Swan pub in harborne) and he was...an absolute arsehole
