Nice job, Steven. You gave the customer an alternative to replacing everything. It's a balancing act out there. That Goodman turned out pretty good under less than ideal conditions.
Nice install Steve. Making things work with different components isn't easy. Goes to show you have years of experience and knowledge. Sometimes customers can't afford changing it all at once. Looks good! Nice clean install....next level mama!
You are on point with Trane. I deal with Trane units at work, although they are very good units, parts and service is ridiculous. I have a Trane furnace at home when it finally goes bad, it won't be a Trane replacing it.
This was so helpful to me Steve, all I ever knew about super heat and sub cooling was "beer can cold"...LOL. I missed getting a great job just this week because the guy ask me about what I would use to determine if a TXV was functioning...super heat or sub cooling...I said sub cooling! :( I have worked on AC since 1988, but it's been sporadic, on for 5 years, offf for 3 doing other jobs. Thank you for your videos, I even go back and watch the older ones because they are so helpful.
Don Burton subcooling is the proper way to determine if a charge is right with a txv. Most of the carriers/icp/day & night have a sub-cooling of about 10-14, the nice part is they put it right on the sticker that lists m/n, s/n.
Great video Steve. When we have unmatched equipment we do what we can to make it work. As long as she's cooling and not flooding back I'm usually a happy camper on those kind of jobs. I connect is starting to look like another tool I want. Love the 550s though. You and Ralph sold me on those!
Thanks. I purchased a 410A liquid charging adapter. (under $15) It stays attached to my 410A can. All I do is turn the bottle upside down and charge. The adapter flashes it when it comes out of the can.
My dryer vent is right behind my ac unit so I use a comb and hose to clean the fins every spring. I pull sheets of lint off of her to start.. weird place to put it and the house was actually built that way new.
Steve, have you ever tried what they called corrosion grenades? They just look like a little ball of zinc that you bolt onto one of the copper compressor pipes, and it will supposedly help to keep the outside unit from corroding in the salt air......
It's a good practice to install a liquid line filter dryer once you open the system to atmospheric and also a TX valve on a mixed system when you change out condenser and not the coil.
Hi lamore can you send me the link for the wireless gauge you have they are really good looking I have the 550 testo but does look nice I want to get me one of them thanks
in that low ambient temperature the pressure on the high side is not sufficient enough to push through the metering device. you need to raise the head pressure(block off the condenser) to simulate a 95F day to accurately check the charge.
Steven I really enjoy your videos and your comical comments. Keep up the good job. Also was curious as to what the brand and model of your superheat/subcooling piece of equipment is ? A good view of it can be viewed at 21:02 of this vid. Thank You.
Stay-Brite 8 is a soft solder and melts at a lower temperature so there's no need to use nitrogen while soldering. Stay-Brite 8 is designed for refrigeration pipes and has a 15,000 PSI shear strength. I used it to install my new Goodman HVAC system.
i think goodman gets a bad rap,and have replaced my share of goodman air handlers because it was cheaper than the coil itself, but overall easy to work on and parts easy to get,put a goodman on my house 8 years ago,and just clean coils yearly,i think trane has just gone friggin overboard on the amount of unnecessary crap they put into their units
Ken Marriott why?! r410 contains r22 as long as there no burnout the evap coil will work out fine . its just the metering device that you need to worry about but being that it's piston and not a txv , should be no problems.
R-410A is a blend, so you charge it as a liquid to prevent components from disproportionately separating. If it is true that R-410A is chlorine free to prevent damage to the ozone, how can it contain R-22? Or does it contain less R-22 and therefore less chlorine?
No way I would ever use a Goodman unit, builder grade and several of my friends that have had them said they only lasted 7 years! No thanks my last Trane unit lasted 17 years
i woulldnt say only last 7 years our house has a brown turd Goodman thats 20 years old its a 1996 still going. we moved in 2 years ago no problems with it its noisy but cools good.
Mine started leaking refrigerant year 2. At first, one refill a year would do it, now it lasts 30 days. And worse, Goodman won't do a thing to replace it, and doesn't even have coils in stock they can sell to HVAC techs for my system outside of warranty. System is 8 years old now and is a $5k piece of garbage.
Goodman units have had such a problem with their 2006+ evap coils leaking that there were multiple class action lawsuits brought against them for the problem. Specifically they started thinning the material in the copper tubes and they have trouble standing up to corrosion and higher pressures of 410a. That's why I'd never use one either.
i dont miss my trane heat pump it burned wires compressor and all burned up and melted at 9 years old had a new 3.5ton 16bseer goodman heat pump and coil and the good man is quiter and doesnt run no where near as much as the trane did
Damn good video Steve. I'm glad summer is here looking forward to some good AC videos. I didn't know you could leave the r-22 coil. That's good to know Steve
hay Steve: nova Scotia Canada here watching good for you love the show man got a lot of good friends that live in Boston i'm an elicitation i do it all been on a lot of the same shitty jobs your on to funny doing a good job man keep it up
Steven, can a Goodman air handler be matched to a Trane Condenser? I have a Trane XL14i running the Puron Freon (410A) and not sure if the Evaporator coil is going to survive the "deep cleaning" it is about to get. I hate to put more money in this 2006 Trane system I bought as I have little faith in Trane these days (mostly because here in FL there are few good AC techs who know how to service them!) Also can you tell me what is the best overall AC system for the money? Thanks for any advice provided!! You ROCK!
hooking up to the pump for the micron gauge will not give you a good reading. I bet you put the micron gauge on the suction line (use a t to put it on with your 3/8 hose).
That was not the way I was taught.🤣🤣🥃🍺🍺🤔 Just say'n . The micron gauge placement? Regardless of the oil residue & and the design temp chart readings(miss matched)this would be for me a complete replacement I don't give two freaks about what has to be ripped out, if they wouldn't go for it I'd tell them put some window shakers in until you can afford the job ! I must be spoiled??😜🤣🤣🥃🍺🍺 I also agree with you on the 4000 inch vacuum hoses your only pulling through 1/4" valves !!! It's 1/4 " people I use 6' hoses one connection the other side (liquid) for my micron gauge through the Schrader's and all, I pull quick vac readings(fresh rubber seals on everything hoses too) my mic doesn't start until 12000!!! You can have the biggest hose people it's only a 1/4 " hole( do the math )! 2 to 2 million cfm pulling through a Quarter inch hoLe less than 6feet ???????!!!!!!🤯(you pay for that trash) If it gets you there 5mins faster it's not like your going to another job😆🤣🤣🍺🥃🥃🥃😜 Lmao!! Just say'n. You seem old school and well versed in the craft, (like pop hard to change)be careful Peirce Phelps requires purity on poe oil?? I took the 410 training class in '03 Lol... 🤣🤣🤣 What is puron? Lol. (Qwik check qt 2000)*oil check Stay safe. Retired keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses.
Yofatboy124 heat rises and the fan's job is to blow air across the coils to remove the heat...no worries about leaves, dirt, grass around the condenser unit, they are tough
Yeah, On a typical day here in texas around 90-100 degrees you'll see a suction of 130-150ish and a head pressure of easily 350 for 410a. Seen 420 head pressure due to low airflow across the condenser because of all the bushes it was surrounded by.
It was cold out maybe if it had a fan cycle switch or a variable speed fan it would have had higher head in turn bringing up the suction pressure as well. My guess is that on a 70 - 80 degree day the pressures are better looking.
Yes there is. The same way you remove your gauges off any system with any kind of refrigerant. Close the value of the refrigerant bottle. Close the lo loss valve on your hi hose. Open the hi valve on your gauges. Open the lo valve on your gauges. The refrigerant in the hi and charging hoses will be sucked into suction line in few seconds. Then close all valves and remove gauges.

Great install Steve Lav it show that there isn't a best air conditioner like Trane advertises
Line flush recommended for refrigerant change and always a filter drier on component change.
Great job but one question, wouldn't you contaminate the system on that kind of change, or is it so minimal that it wouldn't make a difference??
Thanks. I purchased a 410A liquid charging adapter. (under $15) It stays attached to my 410A can. All I do is turn the bottle upside down and charge. The adapter flashes it when it comes out of the can.
Being an ex trane corperate employee, trane sells a roto-loc repair kit that comes with new stub tubing and connectors.
This Trane has left the station for good, mama! 🚂
@Steve Lav. Next time try wrapping the condenser 2/3 to bring up the cond temp to 105degF , then adjust charge as necessary. Good video.
My dryer vent is right behind my ac unit so I use a comb and hose to clean the fins every spring. I pull sheets of lint off of her to start.. weird place to put it and the house was actually built that way new.
I was always told to braze refrigerant line but I saw you solder the line is this new special solder
Hi Steve what apps you use for sub cool super heat and temp suction side and discharge side
Hi lamore can you send me the link for the wireless gauge you have they are really good looking I have the 550 testo but does look nice I want to get me one of them thanks
Have the homeowner run a dividing wall from the dryer vent to passed the AC units. Just a thought.
what product do you recommend for coil cleaning, and is it good idea to clean coils annually etc as routine maintenance?
gsx130 to the rescue ... superheat most likely low because of undersized duct work, real world good bad and ugly ... nice work Steve
Nice install. I have a hydro air unit. I like it. Its about 11 yrs old now.
there hard on air flow because the 2 coils
I would've loved to learn the heating side of HVAC on the field ,we don't use it cause I live in the Caribbean
in that low ambient temperature the pressure on the high side is not sufficient enough to push through the metering device. you need to raise the head pressure(block off the condenser) to simulate a 95F day to accurately check the charge.
Nevermind I now see you had a chart that had ambient air coming in that accounted for it. Good work!
Good job Steve.
Steven I really enjoy your videos and your comical comments. Keep up the good job. Also was curious as to what the brand and model of your superheat/subcooling piece of equipment is ? A good view of it can be viewed at 21:02 of this vid. Thank You.
Steve, thanks for the video. Did you use soft solder to make the outdoor connections to the line set?
Stay-Brite 8 is a soft solder and melts at a lower temperature so there's no need to use nitrogen while soldering. Stay-Brite 8 is designed for refrigeration pipes and has a 15,000 PSI shear strength. I used it to install my new Goodman HVAC system.
Fantastic Steve! That was some good information for my nugget. Thank you man!
Nice work Steve. Thanks for posting!
thanks
good judgement for outside temp
Hi Steve. 410a condenser will work with R22 evap coil ?
man seems like a lot of guys oversize systems in your area. crazy since you're up north.
nice work Steve...we sure needed the AC this weekend!
No ARI rating on that non match, could not do that permitted in Florida. But, I'm sure will work fine. Peace.
i think goodman gets a bad rap,and have replaced my share of goodman air handlers because it was cheaper than the coil itself, but overall easy to work on and parts easy to get,put a goodman on my house 8 years ago,and just clean coils yearly,i think trane has just gone friggin overboard on the amount of unnecessary crap they put into their units
Goodman are junk really but not bad for a cheap quick fix.
Nice unit Steve
you do good work my friend
Nice work Steve
Was this a R-22 evaporator? And the oil blown out with nitrogen, R-22 oil, to prevent issues with the R-410A compressor?
Ken Marriott why?! r410 contains r22 as long as there no burnout the evap coil will work out fine . its just the metering device that you need to worry about but being that it's piston and not a txv , should be no problems.
Thanks

R410a is made of equal parts of R32 and R125.
Good install, condenser.. Steven
what camera do you use? do you have it on your head/chest? in glasses?
No way I would ever use a Goodman unit, builder grade and several of my friends that have had them said they only lasted 7 years! No thanks my last Trane unit lasted 17 years
i woulldnt say only last 7 years our house has a brown turd Goodman thats 20 years old its a 1996 still going. we moved in 2 years ago no problems with it its noisy but cools good.

I installed a Goodman in my parents house in 2011 and it’s still running great. With Trane you’re paying for the name.
Two Janitrol/Goodman units at my house running since 1998 (knock on wood).
Looks fine to me Steve , it's not going to be perfect with mismatch.
not perfect but do able
i dont miss my trane heat pump it burned wires compressor and all burned up and melted at 9 years old had a new 3.5ton 16bseer goodman heat pump and coil and the good man is quiter and doesnt run no where near as much as the trane did
Damn good video Steve. I'm glad summer is here looking forward to some good AC videos. I didn't know you could leave the r-22 coil. That's good to know Steve
Only if the coil is rated for r-22 and 410-a some coils say r-22 only the older coils cant handle the higher pressure of 410-a
It's not a good practice to do it that way.
Why do you need to turn on the heat?
very nice install happy memorial day weekend
Wow I recognized the basement before even watching the original video, been watching a lot of Steve lav. Vids
have you ever used rx11 for flushing line sets it's good stuff first put it in then do the nitrogen purge to blow it all out you get alot of junk out
Where are you located Maine? Great stuff very informative videos.
At 22:35 i notice the air vent for the dryer, bad spot but what could you do.
hay Steve: nova Scotia Canada here watching good for you love the show man got a lot of good friends that live in Boston i'm an elicitation i do it all been on a lot of the same shitty jobs your on to funny doing a good job man keep it up
What is "the old gundy"?
so how many chickens do you have?
Great vídeo Steve!
thanks man

is that a workhorse stepvan?
Nice job Steve!
hooking up to the pump for the micron gauge will not give you a good reading. I bet you put the micron gauge on the suction line (use a t to put it on with your 3/8 hose).
Love the videos Steve. Just one correction, it should be "condensing" in the title. Great job as always.
You spelled condensing unit wrong in the beginning.
You will be back to replace that evap coil 410a will eat up that 22 but thats what the customer wants they get
Give it the ole gundy mama!
Great vid Steve.👍
That was not the way I was taught.🤣🤣🥃🍺🍺🤔
Just say'n .

Stay safe.
Retired keyboard super tech.
Wear your safety glasses.
You have to flush out the lines before switching refrigerant, blowing it out with nitrogen is not enough.
Lies
Good Video Steve
Did you pick up the Fritz from the yard after? LOL
sweet job steve!!!!
thanks for watching
I like to run the fan as fast as I can but still maintain my 20 degree delta.
Well done!
thanks
nice install looks good
When switching from 22 to 410 don't you need a new line set diameter?!
nope
Naw
I don't like the outdoor units how the fan is facing up, that allows shit to get into it more easily.
Yofatboy124 heat rises and the fan's job is to blow air across the coils to remove the heat...no worries about leaves, dirt, grass around the condenser unit, they are tough
is that a drier vent right next to the unit ?
yes it is
Nice job
I thought 410A charge supposed to be 150 suction to 350 head pressure ? enlighten me sensi
Around 65 degrees outdoor ambient will show low head pressure. You'll see 300+ typically on a 85 degree or above day.
I guess it all depends on where you live no !
Yeah, On a typical day here in texas around 90-100 degrees you'll see a suction of 130-150ish and a head pressure of easily 350 for 410a. Seen 420 head pressure due to low airflow across the condenser because of all the bushes it was surrounded by.
How do size your piston for 410A?
there is a piston that comes with the goodman condenser .there is also a chart to go by r22 runs a bigger piston then 410a
why didn't they heresite the coils before? that would've saved them a bunch
It was cold out maybe if it had a fan cycle switch or a variable speed fan it would have had higher head in turn bringing up the suction pressure as well. My guess is that on a 70 - 80 degree day the pressures are better looking.
Nice video
Love my Trane. ITs a beast
Put a Copeland scroll compressor in it and call it a day.
Sub cool does not work with a piston, super heat only. TXV sub cool .
trane sucks! 17 years of a maintained, cleaned and on shady side of house and the compressor locked up GRRRRR!
When charging with a blend, is there a special procedure to clear charging hoses of liquid after done?
Yes there is. The same way you remove your gauges off any system with any kind of refrigerant. Close the value of the refrigerant bottle. Close the lo loss valve on your hi hose. Open the hi valve on your gauges. Open the lo valve on your gauges. The refrigerant in the hi and charging hoses will be sucked into suction line in few seconds. Then close all valves and remove gauges.
Come for the A/C job... Stay for the doggie logs....
Nice
thanks for watching
Jesus steve....its condensing..not condencing...wth
Has it broken down yet?
no lol
r22 to 410a. flushing of line set is required. heard of rx11?
yes i have used rx 11 its a joke ....you must be new to the trade??
hahah true story. Rx11 is BOO BOO. A little oil mixing is not a big deal if you're unit is going to be 90+% POE OIL.
you're wasting money with RX11 unless you use it for a compressor burn out my friend
Rip potato chip lol gota remember that one
Sounds like a hoover
You do AC , I thought you were just a plumber, arr arr
There all cutting on the products trane was considered to be the God of AC products . But not anymore
“You can’t stop a train”! Hmmm I wonder oh wait it just got stoped dead in its tracks lol
we all know this house lol
ck your spelling...I would think most HVAC guys could spell condenser
Nice work Steve
